Caloric intake reduction has been considered as the major experimental manipulation able to increase longevity in experimental models. Therefore, its effects upon cognition and mood like behavior are poorly explored. On the other hand, Li(+) is a re-emergent therapeutic drug used to treat mood disorders, mainly bipolar disorder, with antipanic and antidepressant actions. On the hypothesis that lithium treatment could attenuate the negatives effects of stress on Central Nervous Systems (CNS), we evaluated the role of chronic lithium treatment on anxiety-like behaviors in animals submitted to stress by chronic moderated feed restriction (FR). Male wistar rats were divided into four groups (n = 7-8/group) according to dietary and drug manipulation: ad libitum (AL) with unlimited access to standard rat diet, lithium treatment ( AL + Li) which received approximately 50 mg/Kg animal/day of LiCl solved in water and ad libitum diet, FR that were fed with equivalent to 70% of total rat diet consumed by AL group, and FR + Li which received diet corresponding to FR and Li administration. After 12 weeks of drug and FR manipulation, anxiety like behavior was evaluated in elevated plus mazes (EPM). Chronic lithium treatment prevent the anxiogenic like effect of FR ( open time, F(3,30) = 3.588; P = 0.0265; percentage of open entries, F(3,30) = 6.004; P= 0.00029; and open time at the first min, 2.35; F(3,30) = 4.937; P = 0.0073, Duncan test P < 0.05) compared to AL diet. Ours results adding to evidences that moderate feed restriction my increase anxiety-like behavior; also suggest that chronic lithium treatment may be attenuated this effects.

The influence of sodium (Na) on nucleation and growth of the Al-Si eutectic in a commercial hypoeutectic Al-Si-Cu-Mg foundry alloy has been investigated. The microstructural evolution during eutectic solidification was studied by a quenching technique. By comparing the orientation of the aluminium in the eutectic to that of the surrounding primary aluminium dendrites by EBSD, the eutectic solidification mode could be determined. The results show that the eutectic solidification starts near the mould wall and evolves with front growth opposite the thermal gradient on a macro-scale, and on a micro-scale with independent heterogeneous nucleation of eutectic grains in interdendritic spaces. Na-modified alloys therefore behave significantly differently from those modified by other elemental additions.

Trace elements can have a significant effect on the processing and properties of aluminium alloys, including sintered alloys. As little as 0.07 wt% (100 ppm) lead, tin or indium promotes sintering in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy produced from mixed elemental powders. This is a liquid phase sintering system and thin liquid films form uniformly throughout the alloy in the presence of the trace elements, but liquid pools develop in their absence. Analytical transmission electron microscopy indicates that the trace elements are confined to the interparticle and grain boundary regions. The sintering enhancement is attributed to the segregation of the microalloying addition to the liquid-vapour interface. Because the microalloying elements have a low surface tension, they lower the effective surface tension of the liquid. This reduces the wetting angle and extends the spreading of the liquid through the matrix. An improvement in sintering results. (C) 2001 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Mass balance calculations were performed to model the effect of solution treatment time on A356 and A357 alloy microstructures. Image analysis and electron probe microanalysis were used to characterise microstructures and confirm model predictions. In as-cast microstructures, up to 8 times more Mg is tied up in the pi-phase than in Mg2Si. The dissolution of pi is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the amount of beta-phase. This causes the rate of pi dissolution to be limited by the rate of beta formation. It is predicted that solution treatments of the order of tens of minutes at 540degreesC produce near-maximum T6 yield strengths, and that Mg contents in excess of 0.52 wt% have no advantage.

Yield strength (YS) ageing curves have been modelled for A356 and A357 aluminium casting alloys below the solvus temperature of the main hardening precipitate. Predictions are based on the Shercliff and Ashby methodology (Acta MetaH. Mater. 38 (1990) 1789) for wrought alloys. Differences between strengthening in wrought and cast Al-Si-Mg alloys are considered. A Brinell hardness to YS conversion incorporating strain hardening has been established to enable YS ageing curves to be predicted with reduced experimental effort. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The most characteristic feature of the microstructure of a magnesium alloy that contains more than a few tenths per cent soluble zirconium is the zirconium-rich cores that exist in most grains. The morphology, distribution and composition of cores observed in a Mg-0.56%Zr alloy and the small particles present in them were investigated. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Solid solution effects on the hardness and flow stress have been studied for zinc contents between 0.2 and 2.4 at% (0.5 and 6.9 wt%) in Mg. The alloys were grain refined with 0.6 wt% zirconium to ensure a similar grain size at all compositions. The hardness increases with the zinc content as Hv(10) (kg mm(-2)) = 9 Zn (at%) + 33. At low solute concentrations the (0.2%) proof strength does not change significantly with concentration. At concentrations above 0.7 at%, within the supersaturated solid solution region, the rate of solid solution hardening is high, following a c(2) rule, where c is the atom fraction of Zn. It is suggested that short-range order may account for most of the observed strengthening in concentrated Mg-Zn alloys.

A pesquisa analisa da constituição histórica da disciplina História da Educação ministrada na Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras do Estado do Espírito Santo, posteriormente incorporada a Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo entre os anos de 1951 e 2000. Investiga a constituição histórica da disciplina, as transformações programáticas, legais e institucionais referentes à disciplina de História da Educação, como também as abordagens historiográficas, periodizações e os conceitos de tempo, história e educação. A fundamentação teórica e metodológica articula-se dialogicamente a partir das construções conceituais e metodológicas de Carlo Ginzburg e Mikhail Bakhtin. A partir dos conceitos de polifonia e dialogismo, comum a ambos, investigou-se as vozes e diálogos impressos nas narrativas da disciplina de História da Educação e seu ensino, sejam em camadas mais superficiais ou profundas, encontradas no corpus documental consultado e analisado, que correspondem a: programas de ensino, transparências, leis, estruturas curriculares, documentos de departamento; resenhas e fichamentos de textos, bibliografia obrigatória e complementar, avaliações e entrevistas. Procurou-se no corpus documental dados aparentemente negligenciáveis – pistas, indícios e sinais – remontar uma realidade histórica complexa e não experimentável diretamente. Ao investigar historicamente a trajetória da disciplina História da Educação e seu ensino a partir dos parâmetros legais, programáticos e institucionais, foi possível perceber que as mudanças mais profundas operadas na disciplina não se originam das legislações e reestruturações curriculares, mas dos locais de produção e socialização do conhecimento histórico. Durante o período analisado, as duas esferas de produção historiográficas que mais influenciaram nas abordagens, periodizações e conceitos de tempo, história e educação da disciplina História da Educação do curso de pedagogia pesquisado foram: a editora responsável pela publicação e divulgação dos Manuais de História da Educação da coleção Atualidades Pedagógicas (1951-1979) e os Programas de Pós-graduação em Educação e História (1980 - 2000). Entre 1951 e finais de 1970 observa-se a influência dos Manuais de História da Educação, na organização e programação do ensino de História da Educação e uma abordagem filosófica voltada para a história das ideias pedagógicas e análises do pensamento de filósofos e educadores sobre a educação e respectivas inserções em doutrinas filosóficas europeias. A partir de 1980 as abordagens de cunho econômico, político e ideológico dos contextos históricos educativos passaram a predominar nos programas de ensino das disciplinas de História da Educação I e II, e vigoraram até meados nos anos de 1990. Na disciplina de História da Educação I a abordagem é marcada por análises do contexto de produção e organização das classes sociais; com relação à disciplina História da Educação II, até meados de 1995, trata da educação brasileira. A partir da abordagem fundamentada na Teoria da Dependência após 1995, os documentos consultados começam a mostrar outras marcas que sugerem uma abordagem voltada para a dimensão política e social, abordando a História da Educação Brasileira, a partir dos movimentos sociais e seus respectivos projetos educacionais.
