The time correlations of pressure modes in stationary isotropic turbulence are investigated under the Kraichnan and Tennekes "random sweeping" hypothesis. A simple model is obtained which predicts a universal form for the time correlations. It implies that the decorrelation process of pressure fluctuations in time is mainly dominated by the sweeping velocity, and the pressure correlations have the same decorrelation time scales as the velocity correlations. These results are verified using direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence at two moderate Reynolds numbers; the mode correlations collapse to the universal form when the time separations are scaled by wavenumber times the sweeping velocity, and the ratios of the correlation coefficients of pressure modes to those of velocity modes are approximately unity for the entire range of time separation. In this paper, wavelet, transform is introduced to study the Lipschitz local singular exponent for characterising the local singularity behavior of fluctuating velocity in wall turbulence. I, is found that the local singular exponent is negative when the ejections and sweeps of coherent structures occur in a turbulent boundary layer.

Interactions between different scales in turbulence were studied starting from the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The integral and differential formulae of the short-range viscous stresses, which express the short-range interactions between contiguous scales in turbulence, were given. A concept of the resonant-range interactions between extreme contiguous scales was introduced and the differential formula of the resonant-range viscous stresses was obtained. The short- and resonant-range viscous stresses were applied to deduce the large-eddy simulation (LES) equations as well as the multiscale equations, which are approximately closed and do not contain any empirical constants or relations. The properties and advantages of using the multiscale equations to compute turbulent flows were discussed. The short-range character of the interactions between the scales in turbulence means that the multiscale simulation is a very valuable technique for the calculation of turbulent flows. A few numerical examples were also given.

The failure of hydraulic structures in many estuaries and coastal regions around the world has been attributed to sediment transport and local scour. The sediment incipience in homogenous turbulence generated by oscillating grid is studied in this paper. The turbulent flow is measured by particle tracer velocimetry (PTV) technique. The integral length scale and time scale of turbulence are obtained. The turbulent flow near the wall is measured by local optical magnification. The sediment incipience is described by static theory. The relationship of probability of sediment incipience and the turbulent kinetic energy were obtained experimentally and theoretically. The distribution of the turbulent kinetic energy near the wall is found to obey the power law and the turbulent energy is further identified as the dynamic mechanism of sediment incipience.
