The leader in you : developing your leadership potential

Leadership research demonstrates that there are serious shortcomings in the quality and competence of leaders in our organizations. The recent global financial crisis has also reminded us that, if our society and economies are to move forward sustainability, we must have the right kind of leaders and the right kind of leadership throughout our organizations. Organizations can also utilize this book to assist their leaders to increase their leadership potential or to complement leadership development programs. If you want to set a higher standard in your organization and you think leadership is a serious matter in the lives of other people, then this book is for you. In the process of self-reflection, "The Leader in You: Developing Your Leadership Potential" will enable you to develop an individual leadership profile and an individual skills profile, culminating in the development of a plan for leadership improvement. This book aims to couple these outcomes with exposure to some practical skills that leaders need to lead in every day environments. The first four chapters allow the reader to develop an understanding of the concepts that underpin leadership performance, and to undertake exercises to develop a comprehensive understanding of their values, behaviors and personality. That is, to understand who they are and why they behave the way they do. An individual leadership profile is developed at the end of these chapters. Then, the remaining chapters look at issues that leaders will face in contemporary society, and at the skills required to address them in everyday environments. An individual skills profile is developed at the end of these chapters culminating in the development of a plan for leadership improvement.

The potential of critical race theory in decolonizing university curricula

This paper critiques our experiences as non-Indigenous Australian educators of working with numerous embedding Indigenous perspectives curricular projects at an Australian university. Reporting on these project outcomes alone, while useful in identifying limitations, does not illustrate ways in which future embedding and decolonising projects can persist and evolve. Deeper analysis is required of the ways in which Indigenous knowledge and perspectives are perceived, and what ‘embedding’ IK in university curricula truly means to various educational stakeholders. To achieve a deeper analysis and propose ways to invigorate the continuing decolonisation of Australian university curricula, this paper critically interrogates the methodology and conceptualisation of Indigenous knowledge in embedding Indigenous perspectives (EIP) in the university curriculum using tenets of critical race theory. Accordingly, we conduct this analysis from the standpoint that EIP should not subscribe to the luxury of independence of scholarship from politics and activism. The learning objective is to create a space to legitimise politics in the intellectual / academic realm (Dei, 2008, p. 10). We conclude by arguing that critical race theory’s emancipatory, future and action-oriented goals for curricula (Dei, 2008) would enhance effective and sustainable embedding initiatives, and ultimately, preventing such initiatives from returning to the status quo (McLaughlin & Whatman, 2008).

Backpackers and sustainable tourism : exploring the potential

There is conflicting evidence in the literature with respect to backpackers as contributors to sustainable travel. This paper explores this market with respect to sustainable travel attitudes, behaviours and preferences. More specifically it examined the motivations of backpacker visitors to Australia, their preferences for environmentally friendly and volunteer tourism experiences, and explored attitudes towards the influence of environmental impacts on the future of travel. The resultsindicate that not all backpackers necessarily have a strong focus on the sustainability of their travel, but that those interested in community and environmental volunteering have the greatest potential to make meaningful contributions.

Porphyrin containing isoindoline nitroxides as potential fluorescence sensors of free radicals

A series of new spin-labeled porphyrin containing isoindoline nitroxide moieties were synthesized and characterized as potential free radical fluorescence sensors. Fluorescence-suppression was observed in the free-base monoradical porphyrins, whilst the free-base biradical porphyrins exhibited highly suppressed fluorescence about three times greater than the monoradical porphyrins. The observed fluorescence-suppression was attributed to enhanced intersystem crossing resulting from electronexchange between the doublet nitroxide and the excited porphyrin fluorophore. Notably, fluorescencesuppression was not as strong in the related metalated porphyrins, possibly due to insufficient spin coupling between the nitroxide and the porphyrin. Continuous wave EPR spectroscopy of the diradical porphyrins in fluid solution suggests that the nitroxyl-nitroxyl interspin distance is long enough and tumbling is fast enough not to detect dipolar coupling.

Edaravone containing isoindoline nitroxides for the potential treatment of cardiovascular ischaemia

A novel antioxidant for the potential treatment of ischaemia was designed by incorporating an isoindoline nitroxide into the framework of the free radical scavenger edaravone. 5-(3-Methyl-pyrazol-5-ol-1-yl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl 7 was prepared by N-arylation of 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone with 5-iodo-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindoline-2-yloxyl 8 in the presence of catalytic copper(I)iodide. Evaluation of 7, its methoxyamine derivative 10 and 5-carboxy-1,1,3,3-tetramethylisoindolin-2-yloxyl (CTMIO) against edaravone 1 in ischaemic rat atrial cardiomyocytes revealed significant decreases in cell death after prolonged ischaemia for each agent; however the protective effect of the novel antioxidant 7 (showing greater than 85% reduction in cell death at 100 μM) was significantly enhanced over that of edaravone 1 alone. Furthermore, the activity for 7 was found to be equal to or greater than the potent cardioprotective agent N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA). The methoxyamine adduct 10 and edaravone 1 showed no difference between the extent of reduction in cell death whilst CTMIO had only a modest protective effect.

An indication that non-informative vision eliminates the Kinaesthetic Fusion Effect

This study investigated the Kinaesthetic Fusion Effect (KFE) first described by Craske and Kenny in 1981. The current study did not replicate these findings. Participants did not perceive any reduction in the sagittal separation of a button pressed by the index finger of one arm and a probe touching the other, following repeated exposure to the tactile stimuli present on both unseen arms. This study’s failure to replicate the widely-cited KFE as described by Craske et al. (1984) suggests that it may be contingent on several aspects of visual information, especially the availability of a specific visual reference, the role of instructions regarding gaze direction, and the potential use of a line of sight strategy when referring felt positions to an interposed surface. In addition, a foreshortening effect was found; this may result from a line-of-sight judgment and represent a feature of the reporting method used. The transformed line of sight data were regressed against the participant reported values, resulting in a slope of 1.14 (right arm) and 1.11 (left arm), and r > 0.997 for each. The study also provides additional evidence that mis-perceptions of the mediolateral position of the limbs specifically their separation and consistent with notions of Gestalt grouping, is somewhat labile and can be influenced by active motions causing touch of one limb by the other. Finally, this research will benefit future studies that require participants to report the perceived locations of the unseen limbs.
