Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice-fluid theory was used to predict the miscibility of the PEO/PVAc blending system. Integral interaction parameters, g of this polymer pair were calculated by using SL theory. And the effect of the temperature, composition of blends and molecular weight of PVAc on the extent of their miscibility has been discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Polymer blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN) with an acrylonitrile content of about 30 wt % were prepared by means of solution-casting and characterized by virtue of pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) dilatometry. The Sanchez-Lacombe (SL) lattice fluid theory was used to calculate the spinodals, the binodals, the Flory-Huggins (FH) interaction parameter, the enthalpy of the mixing, the volume change of the mixing, and the combinatorial and vacancy entropies of the mixing for the PMMA/SAN system. A new volume-combining rule was used to evaluate the close-packed volume per mer, upsilon*, of the PMMA/SAN blends. The calculated results showed that the new and the original volume-combining rules had a slight influence on the FH interaction parameter, the enthalpy of the mixing, and the combinatorial entropy of the mixing. Moreover, the spinodals and the binodals calculated with the SL theory by means of the new volume-combining rule could coincide with the measured data for the PMMA/SAN system with a lower critical solution temperature, whereas those obtained by means of the original one could not.

Flory solution theory modified by Hamada et al. (Macromolecules, 1980, 13, 729) was used to predict the miscibility of blends of poly(ethylene oxide) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO-aPMMA) and with poly(vinyl acetate) (PEO-PVAc). Interaction parameters of a PEO-aPMMA blend with the weight ratio of PEO/aPMMA = 50/50 at the temperature range of 393-433 K and PEO-PVAc blends with different compositions and temperatures were calculated from the determined equation-of-state parameters based on Flory solution theory modified by Hamada ed al. Results show that interaction parameters of the PEO-aPMMA blend are negative and can be comparable with values obtained from neutron-scattering measurements by Ito et al. (Macromolecules, 1987, 20, 2213). Also, interaction parameters and excess volumes of PEO-PVAc blends are negative and increase with enhancing the content of PEO and the temperature. The miscibility of blends of cellulose diacetate (CDA) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) was extensively studied by means of differential thermal analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, tensile test, measuring viscosity of diluted and concentrated solutions of blends in acetone-ethanol mixture and morphological observations. A single glass transition temperature is observed, which is intermediate between the glass transition temperatures associated with each component and depends on composition. A synergism in mechanical properties of blends was found. The absolute viscosity and the intrinsic viscosity of solutions of blends are much higher than the weight average values of solutions of CDA and PVP. Optically clear and thermodynamically stable films were formed in the composition range of CDA/PVP = 100/0 to 50/50w/w. Fourier transform infrared was used to investigate the nature of CDA-PVP interaction. Hydrogen bonds were formed between hydroxyl groups of CDA and carbonyl groups of PVP. Heats of solutions of CDA/PVP blends and their mechanical mixtures were measured by using a calorimeter. Mixing enthalpy obtained with Hess's law approach was used to quantify interaction parameters of this blending system. It was found that mixing enthalpies and interaction parameters were negative and composition dependent. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A statistical thermodynamics theory of polydisperse polymer blends based on a lattice model description of a fluid is formulated. Characterization of a binary polydisperse polymer mixture requires a knowledge of the pure polymer system and the interaction energy. It is assumed that the intrinsic and interactive properties of polymer (for example, T*, P*, rho*, and epsilon(ij)*) are independent of molecular size. Thermodynamic properties of ternary and higher order mixtures are completely defined in terms of the pure fluid polymer parameters and the binary interaction energies. Thermodynamic stability criteria for the phase transitions of a binary mixture are shown. The binodal and spinodal of general binary systems and of special binary systems are discussed.

Investigation of the redox thermodynamics of horse heart cytochrome c at bare glassy carbon electrodes has been performed using cyclic voltammetry with a nonisothermal electrochemical cell. The thermodynamic parameters of the electron-transfer reaction of cytochrome c have been estimated in different component buffer solutions. The change DELTAS(re)-degrees in reaction center entropy and the formal potential E-degrees' (at 25-degrees-C, vs. standard hydrogen electrode (SHE)) for cytochrome c are found to be -64.1 J K-1 mol-1 and 0.251 V in phosphate buffer, -64.8 J K-1 mol-1 and 0.257 V in Tris + HCl buffer, -65.6 J K-1 mol-1 and 0.261 V in Tris+CH3COOH buffer (pH 7.0, ionic strength 100 mM). The temperature dependence of the formal potential obtained in phosphate buffer with or without NaCl in the range 5-55-degrees-C shows biphase characteristics in an alkaline solution with an intersection point at ca. 44-degrees-C or 42-degrees-C, which should be due to a structural change in the protein moiety of cytochrome c. However, in acidic and neutral solutions only a monotonic relationship between E-degrees' and temperature is observed. The effect of the buffer component on E-degrees' for cytochrome c is also discussed.

Heat-of-mixing data, obtained on blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with whole and fractionated poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), were used to feed Patterson's theory of polymer-polymer miscibility. Negative values of mixing enthalpy, contact-energy term, interaction'' parameter and excess volume were obtained only for blends with the lowest molecular weight PVAc fraction. These results show that miscibility of PVAc with PEO strongly depends on its molecular weight. The calculated unfavourable excess volume term of the Patterson equation is small in comparison with the absolute value of the interaction term. Therefore, miscibility of PEO and low-molecular-weight PVAc is dictated by the weak specific interactions between different repeat units and by the entropic gain in the mixing process.

A statistical thermodynamics theory of polydisperse polymers based on a lattice model of fluids is formulated. Pure polydisperse polymer can be completely characterized by three scale factors and the molecular weight distribution of the system. The equation of state does not satisfy a simple corresponding-states principle, except for a polymer fluid of sufficiently high molecular weight. The relationships between thermal expansion coefficient alpha and isothermal compressibility beta with reduced variables are also predicted.

The first thermodynamic dissociation constants of glycine in 5, 15 mass % glucose + water mixed solvents at five temperatures from 5 to 45-degrees-C have been determined from precise emf measurements of a cell without liquid junction using hydrogen and Ag-AgCl electrodes and a new method of polynomial approximation proposed on the basis of Pitzer's electrolytic solution theory in our previous paper. The results obtained from both methods agree within experimental error. The standard free energy of transfer for HCl from water to aqueous mixed solvent have been calculated and the results are discussed.

The protonation constant of the ligand and stability constants of it complexes with rare earths have been determined by potentiometric titration at 25 degrees C and ionic strength mu=0.15 mol - L-1. The results indicate that rare earth elements can form 1:1 complexes with L methionine. There is an apparent "tetrad effect" in this system. Shift of the yttrium position to the vicinity of Gd can he explained by the different polarisation between the Ln(3+) and the ligand. The enthalpy changed (Lambda H-101) of the coordination reaction as represented by the reaction (M + L (sic) ML) here been measured by calorimetric titration, where M and L. denote are eartus and L-Mer respectively. The Lambda G(101) and Delta S-101 of these reaction have been calculated by using Gibbs' equation, Furthermore, the stability of rare earth complexes with L-Met has been compared with that of Ca3+ Zn3+, Fe2+, Fe3+ complexes with L-Met.
