To assess the cytotoxicity of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) bleaching gel applied for 15 min to sound or restored teeth with two-step self-etching adhesive systems and composite resin. Materials and Methods: Sound and restored enamel/dentin disks were stored in water for 24 h or 6 months + thermocycling. The disks were adapted to artificial pulp chambers and placed in compartments containing culture medium. Immediately after bleaching, the culture medium in contact with dentin was applied for 1 h to previously cultured odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells. Thereafter, cell viability (MTT assay) and morphology (SEM) were assessed. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (a = 5%). Results: In comparison to the negative control group (no treatment), no significant cell viability reduction occurred in those groups in which sound teeth were bleached. However, a significant decrease in cell viability was observed in the adhesive-restored bleached groups compared to negative control. No significant difference among bleached groups was observed with respect to the presence of restoration and storage time. Conclusion: The application of 35% HP bleaching gel to sound teeth for 15 min does not cause toxic effects in pulp cells. When this bleaching protocol was performed in adhesive-restored teeth, a significant toxic effect occurred.

This study evaluated the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation on the external adaptation of composite resin restorations in caries-affected cavities. Mixed class V cavity preparations were performed in 36 intact human third molars, in half of which caries was artificially induced. Both healthy and carious dentin were etched with 35% phosphoric acid (Ultradent Products Inc., South Jordan, Utah, USA), and the teeth were divided into three groups, i.e., (a) untreated etched dentin, (b) application of the Er, Cr:YSGG laser and (c) use of chlorhexidine as an adjunct in the bonding process. Restorations were fabricated with Z350 XT FiltekTM composite resin (3M ESPE) and subsequently the specimens were subjected to thermocycling to simulate artificial ageing. Quantitative analysis of external adaptation was performed by scanning electron microscopy in both healthy and affected dentin using epoxy resin replicas. It was concluded that the application of laser and chlorhexidine did not affect the percentages of marginal adaptation of class V restorations. Furthermore, thermocycling may influence adaptation values.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of conditioning methods and thermocycling on the bond strength between composite core and resin cement. Material and Methods: Eighty blocks (8x8x4 mm) were prepared with core build-up composite. The cementation surface was roughened with 120-grit carbide paper and the blocks were thermocycled (5,000 cycles, between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C, with a 30 s dwell time in each bath). A layer of temporary luting agent was applied. After 24 h, the layer was removed, and the blocks were divided into five groups, according to surface treatment: (NT) No treatment (control); (SP) Grinding with 120-grit carbide paper; (AC) Etching with 37% phosphoric acid; (SC) Sandblasting with 30 mm SiO2 particles, silane application; (AO) Sandblasting with 50 mu m Al2O3 particles, silane application. Two composite blocks were cemented to each other (n=8) and sectioned into sticks. Half of the specimens from each block were immediately tested for microtensile bond strength (mu TBS), while the other half was subjected to storage for 6 months, thermocycling (12,000 cycles, between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C, with a dwell time of 30 s in each bath) and mu TBS test in a mechanical testing machine. Bond strength data were analyzed by repeated measures two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (alpha=0.05). Results: The mu TBS was significantly affected by surface treatment (p=0.007) and thermocycling (p=0.000). Before aging, the SP group presented higher bond strength when compared to NT and AC groups, whereas all the other groups were statistically similar. After aging, all the groups were statistically similar. SP submitted to thermocycling showed lower bond strength than SP without thermocycling. Conclusion: Core composites should be roughened with a diamond bur before the luting process. Thermocycling tends to reduce the bond strength between composite and resin cement.

To evaluate the volumetric changes due to polymerization and thermocycling on different resin-composites. Methods: Thirteen A2 Universal Dentin shade resin-composites (n = 10) from eight manufacturers were evaluated (4Seasons, Grandio, Venus, Amelogen Plus, P90, Z350, Esthet-X, Amaris, Vita-l-escence, Natural-Look, Charisma, Z250 and Opallis). The polymerization shrinkage percentage (PS) was calculated using an image measurement device (ACUVOL - Bisco Dental). Equal volumes of material, standardized by a semisphere polyurethane matrix (d = 3mm) were used and, after 5 minutes of relaxation, the baseline volume measurements were obtained with 18 J of energy dose from the LED light-curing unit. Measurements were obtained after 5 minutes and PS values calculated. Specimens were stored in a drydark environment for 24 hours and re-measured. Specimens were then thermocycled in distilled water between 5oC and 55oC for 20,000 cycles, subjected to another volume measurement at 5,000 cycle intervals. Specimens were gently dried prior to each measurement. Results: Repeated measurements were made using ANOVA (α = 0.05) showed that all resin-composite volumes were influenced by the number of cycles. Volumes at 5 minutes post-polymerization (12.47 ± 0.08) were significantly lower than those at baseline (12.80 ± 0.09). Volumes at 24 hours (12.43 ± 0.19) were insignificantly lower than those at 5 minutes postpolymerization. With regards to the impact of thermocycling, all specimens showed statistically significant increases in volume after 5,000 cycles (13.04 ± 0.22). Although statistically different from those after 5,000 cycles, there was no statistically significant difference between volumes measured at 10,000 (12.87±0.21), 15,000 (12.92±0.24), and 20,000 (12.84±0.23) cycles. Objectives: This study aimed to assess dimensional changes in acrylic resin base and artificial teeth position after water storage and thermocycling using computer graphics measurements. Methods: Twenty-four waxed replicas were obtained from a previous upper complete denture. For linear measurements, points in cusps tips of left central incisor and second premolars and molars were marked in one of the prostheses with graphite and transferred to the others using an acrylic resin guide. The prostheses were scanned after waxing, polymerization and treatments and the images were exported to “AutoCad 2002 Today®” software for measurements. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in changes of each segment for each group and between the phases evaluated after polymerization and thermocycling. In groups I and III, the values after polymerization are higher than those after treatment, which suggests shrinkage while the prostheses in group II have expanded. Conclusion: The three groups exhibited artificial teeth movement after tests in comparison to the polymerized prosthesis. The prostheses submitted to water storage in kiln at 36ºC during seven days showed different behavior than the other groups.

Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the microhardness of three resin cements used in cementing glass fiber posts in bovine incisor. The microhardness was analyzed in cervical, middle and apical thirds before and after thermocycling process. Materials and Methods: Bovine teeth were instrumented and divided into 3 groups composed of 10 teeth each. Then, the teeth were sectioned and obturated and had their canals prepared at a depth of 12mm. Once proceeded the desobturation, the roots and glass fiber posts were prepared for adhesive cementation. After cementation, the microhardness reading was carried out. After initial reading, the samples were placed in a thermocycler and subjected to 2,000 cycles and a new microhardness reading. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Turkey’s test. Results: It was observed a statistical difference among the microhardness of resin cements. However, the statistical difference of microhardness before and after thermocycling appeared only in group U-200. Conclusion: Thermocycling reduced microhardness values in all cements evaluated in this study. The autopolymerizing cement Multilink presented the most stable microhardness mean values after thermocycling in the coronal, middle and apical thirds.

This in vitro study evaluated the demineralization around restorations class V made on the buccal and lingual surfaces of teeth when using different restorative materials. Thirty extracted teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=10) according to the restorative material: Group I - Fuji II LC (GC America Inc., Alsip, Illinois, USA), Group II - Tetric (Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and Group III - Chelon Fil (3M/ESPE., Seefeld, Germany). The teeth were submitted to a pH-cycling model associated to a thermocycling model. Sections were made and the specimens were analyzed under a polarized light microscopy as for the presence of demineralization. Measurements were performed and the results were subjected to statistical analysis using Anova and Tukey´s Test (α=0.05). Mean values of demineralization depth (µm) according to each positions showed that the demineralization was significantly reduced when Chelon Fil (Group III) was used for all depths, when compared to fluoridated resin materials. Also, it was verified that non-fluoridated resin material, composite resin Tetric, had the lowest inhibitory effect on the development of demineralization.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the color variation of three different composite resins . We studied was Resin Enamel on 3 levels : ( Esthetic X , Opallis and Venus ) ; Resin Dentin in three levels : ( Esthetic X , Opallis and Venus ) and Thermocycling on level 1 : ( 3,000 cycles ) ; variable was the change of color gauged by spectrophotometry . 60 specimens , subdivided into 6 groups were made : GI - Esthetic X Enamel ; GII - Esthetic X dentin ; GIII - Opallis Enamel ; GIV - Opallis dentin ; GV - Enamel and GVI Venus - Venus dentin . The specimens were prepared with a matrix to standardize samples . The inserts of incrementally resins and polymerized with a halogen light Ultralux unit ( Dabi Atlante , Brazil ) with a power of 450mW / cm ² . After fabrication , underwent color reading with a UV Visible Spectrophotometer reflection , UV -2450 ( Shimadzu , Kyoto , Japan ) , with the changes calculated by the system CIE L * a * b * . Then isolates were stored in artificial saliva at 35 ° C ± 2 ° C during 3 months containers being subjected to the effects of thermal cycling for 3000 cycles over the range of 5C to 55C . Again subjected to chromatic evaluation. For the analysis of the results of color change of the studied resins was applied ANOVA two factors at 5 % . The results showed a statistically equal resins enamel GI and GV ( p = 0.79 ) ; the same was not observed for GI and G III resins , where the color change was higher for resin G III ( p = 0.0000002 ) . The same was observed between G III and GV , where the resin enamel G III showed a statistically superior to the color change ( p = 0.0000005 ) Average . Resins to dentin was there a statistical equality between the materials studied . We conclude that the resins studied change in color and resin enamel G III was the most suffered major color changes after aging by thermocycling .
