A new approach for the synthesis of polyaniline nanofibers under pseudo-high dilute conditions in aqueous system has been developed. High yield nanoscale polyaniline fibers with 18-110 nm in diameter are readily prepared by a high aniline concentration 0.4 M oxidation polymerization using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant in the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl), perchloric acid (HClO4), (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA), acidic phosphate PAEG120 (PA120) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the dopants. The novel pathway always produces polyaniline nanofibers of tunable diameters, high conductivity (from 10(0) to 10(1) S/cm) and crystallinity.

A novel wholly aromatic diamine, 2,2 '-bis(3-sulfobenzoyl)benzidine (2,2 '-BSBB), was successfully prepared by the reaction of 2,2 '-dibenzoylbenzidine (2,2 '-DBB) with fuming sulfuric acid. Copolymerization of 1,4,5,8-naphathlenetetracarboxylic dianhydride with 2,2 '-BSBB and 2,2 '-DBB generated a series of rigid-rod sulfonated polyimides. The synthesized copolymers with the -SO3H group on the side chain of polymers possessed high molecular weights revealed by their high viscosity and the formation of tough and flexible membranes. The copolymer membranes exhibited excellent oxidative stability and mechanical properties due to their fully aromatic structure extending through the backbone and pendent groups. They displayed clear anisotropic membrane swelling in water with negligibly small dimensional changes in the plane direction of the membrane. The proton conductivities of copolymer membranes increased with increasing IEC and temperature, reaching value above 1.25 x 10(-1) S/cm at 20 degrees C, which is higher than that of Nafion (R) 117 at the same measurement condition. They displayed reasonably high proton conductivity due to the higher acidity of benzoyl sulfonic acid group, the larger interchain spacing, which is available for water to occupy, taking their lower water uptake (WU) into account. Consequently, these materials proved to be promising as proton exchange membrane.

In this work, studies were carried out on the extraction properties of Mn(II) and MnO4- in sulfuric acid medium using Cyanex 923. Effects of different variables on the extraction of Mn(II) and MnO4-, such as the concentrations of acid, the extractant, and the temperature, were investigated. Results indicated that Mn(II) was extracted weakly by Cyanex 923; however, MnO4- could be strongly extracted into the organic phase. The extraction mechanism of MnO4- was proposed, and the influence of MnO4- on the extraction of cerium was identified when KMnO4 as oxidizer added into the bastnasite sulfuric acid leaching liquor. As MnO4- was easier to be extracted into the organic phase than Ce(IV) and then lost its ability for oxidization, a new device was designed to realize sufficient oxidization of cerium from III to IV, and which has been applied to industrialization.

The mass transfer behaviors of Cd(II), Fe(III), Zn(II), and Eu(III) in sulfuric acid solution using microporous hollow fiber membrane (HFM) containing bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid (commercial name Cyanex302) were investigated in this paper. The experimental results showed that the values of the mass transfer coefficients (K-w) decreased with an increase of H+ concentration and increased with an increase of extractant Cyanex302 concentration. The mass transfer resistance of Eu3+ was the largest because K-w value of Eu3+ was the smallest. The order of mass transfer rate of metal ions at low pH was Cd > Zn > Fe > Eu. Mixtures of Zn2+ and Eu3+ or of Zn2+ and Cd2+ were well separated in a counter-current circulation experiment using two modules connected in series at different initial acidity and concentration ratio. These results indicate that a hollow fiber membrane extractor is capable of separating the mixture compounds by controlling the acidity of the aqueous solution and by exploiting different mass transfer kinetics. The interfacial activity of Cyanex302 in sulfuric acid solution was measured and interfacial parameters were obtained according to Gibbs adsorption equation.

A novel sulfonated aromatic dichloride monomer was successfully prepared by the reaction of 2, 5-dichlorobenzophenone with fuming sulfuric acid. Copolymerization of this monomer in the form of sodium salt (1) with N-(4-chloro-2-trifluoromethylphenyl)-5-chloro-1,8-naphthalimide (2) or bis(N-(4-chloro-2-trifluoromethylphenyl)1,4,5,8-naphthalimide (3) generated two series of novel poly(arylene-co-naphthalimide) s I-x and II-x where x represents the content of the sulfonated monomer. The synthesized copolymers with the -SO3H group in the side chains possessed high molecular weights revealed by their high viscosity and the formation of tough and flexible membranes. The copolymers exhibited excellent stability toward water and oxidation due to the introduction of the hydrophobic CF3 groups. The sulfonated copolyimides that incorporated with 1,8-naphthalimide (I-x) exhibited better hydrolytic and oxidative stabilities than those with 1,4,5,8-naphthalimide. Copolymer I-50 membrane endured for more than 83 h in Fenton's reagent at room temperature. The mechanical properties of I-50 membrane kept almost unchanged after immersing membrane in boiling water for 196 h. The proton conductivities of copolymer films increased with increasing IEC and temperature, reaching values above 6.8 x 10(-1) S/cm at 80 degrees C.

The organic sol method for preparing ultrafine transition metal colloid particles reported for the first time by Bonnemann et al. [H. Bonnemann, W Brijoux, R. Brinkmann, E. Dinjus, T. Jou beta en, B. Korall, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl., 30 (1991) 1312] has been improved in this paper. The improved organic sol method uses SnCl2 as the reductant and methanol as the organic solvent. Thus, this method is very simple and inexpensive. It was found that the average size of the Pt particles in the Pt/C catalysts can be controlled by adjusting the evaporating temperature of the solvent. Therefore, the Pt/C catalysts prepared by the same method are suitable for evaluating the size effect of the Pt particles on electrocatalytic performance for methanol oxidation. The results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that when the evaporating temperatures of the solvent are 65, 60, 50, 40, and 30 degrees C, the average sizes of the Pt particles in the Pt/C catalysts prepared are: 2.2, 3.2, 3.8, 4.3, and 4.8 nm, respectively. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) results demonstrated that the small Pt particles are easily oxidized and the decomposition/adsorption of methanol cannot proceed on the surfaces of Pt oxides.

The extraction and stripping of ytterbium (III) from sulfuric acid medium using Cyanex 923 in heptane solution was investigated. The effects of extractant concentration, pH and sulfate ion as well as stripping agents, acidity and temperature on the extraction and stripping were studied. The equilibrium constants and thermodynamic parameters, such as Delta H (10.76 kJ(.)mol(-1)), Delta G (-79.26 kJ(.)mol(-1)) and Delta S (292.41 J(.)K(-1.)mol(-1)), were calculated. The extraction mechanism and the complex species extracted were determined by slope analysis and FrIR spectra. Furthermore, it was found that the extraction of Yb (III) from sulfuric acid medium by Cyanex 923 increased with pH, concentration of SO42-, HSO4-, and extractant concentration, and approximately a quantitative extraction of Yb (III) was achieved at an equilibrium pH near 3.0, and the extracted complex was YbSO4(HSO4)(.)2Cyanex923((o)).

Historically, polyaniline (PANI) had been considered an intractable material, but it can be dissolved in some solvents. Therefore, it could be processed into films or fibers. A process of preparing a blend of conductive fibers of PANI/poly-omega-aminoun-decanoyle (PA11) is described in this paper. PANI in the emeraldine base was blended with PA11 in concentrated sulfuric acid (c-H,SO,) to form a spinning dope solution. This solution was used to spin conductive PANI/PA11 fibers by wet-spinning technology. As-spun fibers were obtained by spinning the dopes into coagulation bath water or diluted acid and drawn fibers were obtained by drawing the as-spun fibers in warm drawing bath water. A scanning electron microscope was employed to study the effect of the acid concentration in the coagulation bath on the microstructure of as-spun fibers. The results showed that the coagulating rate of as-spun fibers was reduced and the size of pore shrank with an increase in the acid concentration in the coagulation bath. The weight fraction of PANI in the dope solution also had an influence on the microstructure of as-spun fibers. The microstructure of as-spun fibers had an influence on the drawing process and on the mechanical properties of the drawn fibers. Meanwhile, the electrically conductive property of the drawn fibers with different percentage of PANI was measured.

The catalytic behaviors of a novel liquid acid catalyst (composed of heteropolyacid and acetic acid) for alkylation of isobutane with butene was investigated. As a solvent acetic acid had a synergistic effect. It enhanced the acid strength of HPA and its stability. The conditions for the formation of the catalytically active phase were studied systematically. The content of crystal water of HPA and the quantity of solvent affect the formation of active phase and the catalytic activity. Catalytically active phase consists of HPA, acetic acid and hydrocarbon produced from the reaction, as well as traces of water from the crystal water of HPA. This catalyst system is comparable to the sulfuric acid in catalytic activity.

A novel liquid acid catalyst, composed of heteropolyacid and acetic acid for the alkylation of isobutane with butenes is reported. The conditions for the formation of catalytic active phase as well as its catalytic behaviors in alkylation of isobutane with butenes have been studied. It was found that acetic acid, as a solvent, exerts a synergistic effect on the acid strength of heteropolyacid, and the contents of crystal water in HPAs have influence over the formation of active phase and the catalytic activity. This novel catalyst is comparable to the sulfuric acid in catalytic activity.

Extraction and separation of Eu3+ and Zn2+ in sulfuric acid solution was investigated by hollow fiber membrane with cyanex 302 (bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) monothiophosphinic acid) in counter-currently circulating operation. Reaction mechanism of membrane extraction and effect of extractant concentration and H+ concentration in aqueous phase on the mass transfer coefficient were discussed. It can be concluded that Zn2+ can be extracted completely from Eu3+ sulfate solution according to the kinetics competing difference. In one extractor process, extraction percentage of Zn2+ was not completely and Eu3+ was not extracted. Extraction percentage of Zn2+ reached 94.92%, but Eu3+ only reached 8.59% after 100 minutes extraction in two series connectors and that of Zn2+ and Eu3+ reached 99.9% and 6.53% respectively after 40 minutes extraction in three series connectors.

Polyaniline (PANI), a member of the intrinsically conducting polymer (ICPs) family, was blended with polyamide-11 (polyco-aminoundecanoyle) in concentrated sulfuric acid. The above solution was used to spin conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers by wet-spinning technology. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to study the two-phase morphology of the conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers. The micrographs of the cross-section, the axial section and the surface of the monofilament demonstrated that the two blend components were incompatible. The morphology of PANI in the fibers was of fibrillar form, which was valuable for producing conducting channels. The electrical conductivity of the fibers was from 10(-6) to 10(-1) S/cm with the different PANI fraction and the percolation threshold was about 5 wt.%. By comparing the two blend systems of PANI/Polyamide-11 fibers and carbon black filled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers, it was shown that the morphology of the conductive component had an influence on electrical conductivity, The former had higher conductivity and lower percolation threshold than the latter. A series of main-chain Liquid-crystalline ionomers containing sulfonate groups pendant on the polymer backbone were synthesized by an interfacial condensation reaction of 4,4'-dihydroxy-alpha,alpha'-dimethyl benzalazine, a mesogenic monomer, with brilliant yellow (BY), a sulfonate-containing monomer, and a 1/9 mixture of terephthaloyl and sebacoyl dichloride. The structures of the polymers were characterized by LR and UV spectroscopies. DSC and thermogravimetric analysis were used to measure the thermal properties of those polymers, and the mesogenic properties were characterized by a polarized optical microscope, DSC, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The ionomers were thermally stable to about 310 degreesC. They were thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCPs) with high mesomorphic-phase transition temperatures and exhibited broad nematic mesogenic regions of 160-170 degreesC, and they were lyotropic LCPs with willowy leaf-shaped textures in sulfuric acid. However, the thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties were somewhat weakened because the concentration of BY was more than 8%. The inherent viscosity in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone suggested that intramolecular associations of sulfonate groups occurred at low concentration, and intermolecular associations predominated at higher concentration. A new monomer, sodium 5,5'-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1), was synthesized by sulfonation of 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with fuming sulfuric acid. Poly(ether ether ketone)s containing sodium sulfonate groups were synthesized directly via aromatic nucleophilic substitution from the sodium sulfonate-functionalized monomer 1 and Bisphenol A (3) in the presence of potassium carbonate in dimethyl sulfoxide. The polycondensation proceeds without any side reactions. The differential scanning calorimetry measurement indicated that the polymers are amorphous and the glass transition temperatures increase with the content of sodium sulfonate groups in the polymer chain. The degree of substitution with sodium sulfonate groups has strong influence on their thermal stability and solubility.
