The radiative processes associated with fluorophores and other radiating systems can be profoundly modified by their interaction with nanoplasmonic structures. Extreme electromagnetic environments can be created in plasmonic nanostructures or nanocavities, such as within the nanoscale gap region between two plasmonic nanoparticles, where the illuminating optical fields and the density of radiating modes are dramatically enhanced relative to vacuum. Unraveling the various mechanisms present in such coupled systems, and their impact on spontaneous emission and other radiative phenomena, however, requires a suitably reliable and precise means of tuning the plasmon resonance of the nanostructure while simultaneously preserving the electromagnetic characteristics of the enhancement region. Here, we achieve this control using a plasmonic platform consisting of colloidally synthesized nanocubes electromagnetically coupled to a metallic film. Each nanocube resembles a nanoscale patch antenna (or nanopatch) whose plasmon resonance can be changed independent of its local field enhancement. By varying the size of the nanopatch, we tune the plasmonic resonance by ∼ 200 nm, encompassing the excitation, absorption, and emission spectra corresponding to Cy5 fluorophores embedded within the gap region between nanopatch and film. By sweeping the plasmon resonance but keeping the field enhancements roughly fixed, we demonstrate fluorescence enhancements exceeding a factor of 30,000 with detector-limited enhancements of the spontaneous emission rate by a factor of 74. The experiments are supported by finite-element simulations that reveal design rules for optimized fluorescence enhancement or large Purcell factors.

This paper will compare and contrast Jung’s performance of cultural analysis and healing in his essays with the way his notion of the symbol works in literature to knit the individual psyche into the collective. It will explore Jung’s unique essay form of the spiral as a literary innovation, and look at the way a Jungian reading of literary reveals a significant contribution to cultural studies. Plane wave scattering from a flat surface consisting of two periodic arrays of ring elements printed on a grounded dielectric sheet is investigated. It is shown that the reflection phase variation as a function of ring diameter is controlled by the difference in the centre resonant frequency of the two arrays. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that this parameter can be used to reduce the gradient and improve the linearity of the reflection phase versus ring size slope. These are necessary conditions for the re-radiating elements to maximise the bandwidth of a microstrip reflectarray antenna. The scattering properties of a conventional dual resonant multilayer structure and an array of concentric rings printed on a metal backed dielectric substrate are compared and the trade-off in performance is discussed.

The bandwidth of a resonant quadrifilar helix antenna (QHA) is shown to be strongly dependent on the design of the feed network. In this paper, we compare the impedance and radiation-pattern performance of two QHAs driven by different feed arrangements. A qualitative explanation for the difference in the behaviour of the antenna is given by observing the amplitude and phase distribution of the current in the helices. We present a new circuit-model approach which can be used to compute the mutual impedance between two dipoles fed at the same feed point. The validity of the method is confirmed by comparison with mutual impedance values obtained when the dipoles are individually excited and orientated at angles between 0degrees and 90degrees. The reflection phase response of a two-layer array of orthogonally oriented concentric split rings is presented. Splitting the ring elements suppresses the interlayer coupling and produces polarisation sensitive scattering. Simulated and measured results at X-band demonstrate that these proper-ties enable the reflection phase coefficients of a reflect-array to be independently optimised at two different frequencies.

In this paper, we show how a self-tracking antenna array constructed using gimel /4 monopoles can be constructed, which is capable of receiving with gain over an entire 360 degrees azimuthal cut. It is also shown how the self-tacking receive unit can be used in conjunction with a self-phased transmitter so that self-steered spatially selective receive and transmit functions ran be formed simultaneously. The resulting array is capable of maintaining spatially selective receive and transmit functions to a roaming target without prior knowledge of its physical location.
