In this paper an adaptive approach for color image enhancement is proposed. In this approach, the saturation feedback technique is used as a means of supplementing color image shmpness and contrast. This technique of the saturation feedback can serve to bring out image details that have low luminance contrast. In the technique, the feedback parameters are the key component and are usually determined manually. In order to realize the adaptive color image enhancement, the genetic algorithm is employed to search global optimal parameters for saturation feedback automatically. The detailed procedures are described in the paper. Experimental results on color images show the feasibility of the proposed method.

Supervised machine learning techniques generally require that the training set on which learning is based contain sufficient examples representative of the target concept, as well as known counter-examples of the concept; however, in many application domains it is not possible to supply a set of labeled counter-examples. This paper proposes an objective function based on Bayesian likelihoods of necessity and sufficiency. This function can be used to guide search towards the discovery of a concept description given only a set of labeled positive examples of the target concept, and as a corpus of unlabeled examples. Results of experiments performed on several datasets from the VCI repository show that the technique achieves comparable accuracy to conventional supervised learning techniques, despite the fact that the latter require a set of labeled counter-examples to be supplied. The technique can be applied in many domains in which the provision of labeled counter-examples is problematic.

Conventional relevance feedback schemes may not be suitable to all practical applications of content-based image retrieval (CBIR), since most ordinary users would like to complete their search in a single interaction, especially on the web search. In this paper, we explore a new approach to improve the retrieval performance based on a new concept, bag of images, rather than relevance feedback. We consider that image collection comprises of image bags instead of independent individual images. Each image bag includes some relevant images with the same perceptual meaning. A theoretical case study demonstrates that image retrieval can benefit from the new concept. A number of experimental results show that the CBIR scheme based on bag of images can improve the retrieval performance dramatically.

Traditional content-based image retrieval (CBIR) scheme with assumption of independent individual images in large-scale collections suffers from poor retrieval performance. In medical applications, images usually exist in the form of image bags and each bag includes multiple relevant images of the same perceptual meaning. In this paper, based on these natural image bags, we explore a new scheme to improve the performance of medical image retrieval. It is feasible and efficient to search the bag-based medical image collection by providing a query bag. However, there is a critical problem of noisy images which may present in image bags and severely affect the retrieval performance. A new three-stage solution is proposed to perform the retrieval and handle the noisy images. In stage 1, in order to alleviate the influence of noisy images, we associate each image in the image bags with a relevance degree. In stage 2, a novel similarity aggregation method is proposed to incorporate image relevance and feature importance into the similarity computation process. In stage 3, we obtain the final image relevance in an adaptive way which can consider both image bag similarity and individual image similarity. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach can improve the image retrieval performance significantly.

Many web servers contain some dangerous pages (we name them eigenpages) that can indicate their vulnerabilities. Therefore, some worms such as Santy locate their targets by searching for these eigenpages in search engines with well-crafted queries. In this paper, we focus on the modeling and containment of these special worms targeting web applications. We propose a containment system based on honey pots. We make search engines randomly insert a few honey pages that will induce visitors to the pre-established honey pots among the search results for the arriving queries. And then infectious can be detected and reported to the search engines when their malicious scans hit the honey pots. We find that the Santy worm can be well stopped by inserting no more than two honey pages in every one hundred search results. We also solve the challenging issue to dynamically generate matching honey pages for those dynamically arriving queries. Finally, a prototype is implemented to prove the technical feasibility of this system. © 2013 by CESER Publications.
