By using bender and extender elements test, the velocities of the primary and shear waves, V(P) and V(s) respectively, were measured for a sandy material by gradually varying the degree of saturation, S(r), between the dry and fully saturated states. The effect on the results of varying the relative density and effective confining pressure was also studied. The measurements clearly reveal that for a certain optimum S(r), which is around 0.7-0.9% for the chosen sand, the value of the shear modulus G reaches a maximum value, whereas the corresponding Poisson's ratio nu attains a minimum value. The values of the shear modulus corresponding to S(r) approximate to 0% and S(r) = 100% tend towards the same value. For values of Skempton's B parameter greater than 0.99, the values of V(P) and nu rise very sharply to those of water. The predictions from Biot's theory with respect to the variation of V(P) with S(r) match well with the measured experimental data.

Precompression, wherein the probable settlements are achieved at an accelerated pace through preloading, well before the construction is take up, has been widely used in areas of ground improvement with respect to soft clays. By applying a temporary surcharge load in excess or less than the permanent load, the soil achieves higher initial effective stress and when the final load is applied, the soil experiences, lower load increment ratio or negative load increment ratio. In this paper, based on the laboratory experiments conducted on cochin marine clays and Mangalore marine clays, attempts have been made to analyse the volume change behaviour of preloaded clays. It has been brought out that for a preloaded clay, the final load increment ratio has an important role in its behaviour. Effective preloading not only reduces the final settlement due to primary, the secondary consolidation settlement also gets reduced.

Sampling disturbance is unavoidable and hence the laboratory testing most often is on partially disturbed samples. This paper deals with the development of a simple method to assess degree of sample disturbance from the prediction of yield stress due to cementation and comparison of yield stress in compression of partially disturbed sample with reference to a predicted compression path of the clay devoid of any mechanical disturbance. The method uses simple parameters which are normally determined in routine investigations.

In the present paper, the constitutive model is proposed for cemented soils, in which the cementation component and frictional component are treated separately and then added together to get overall response. The modified Cam clay is used to predict the frictional resistance and an elasto-plastic strain softening model is proposed for the cementation component. The rectangular isotropic yield curve proposed by Vatsala (1995) for the bond component has been modified in order to account for the anisotropy generally observed in the case of natural soft cemented soils. In this paper, the model proposed is used to predict the experimental results of extension tests on the soft cemented soils whereas compression test results are presented elsewhere. The model predictions compare quite satisfactorily with the observed response. A few input parameters are required which are well defined and easily determinable and the model uses associated flow rule.

The mechanical properties of clays are highly dependent not only on the stress/strain ratio to which the material is subjected but also on the chemistry of the pore fluids which in turn affects the intergranular or the effective stresses. Atterberg limits and vane shear tests were performed with different pore fluids in order to observe how the fine-grained material mechanically responded. The diffuse double layer theory has been used to interpret the data of vane shear tests in order to explain the variation of geotechnical responses with the different clays. Van der Waals forces and double layer forces were obtained and capillary forces calculated. The results show that while for kaolinite and illite the chemistry of the pore fluids has no influence on the water content and hence on the mechanical behaviour of the material, Na-smectite shows a strong correlation between the dielectric constant of the pore fluids and an increase in undrained shear strength. The data obtained extends an understanding of the influence of the dielectric constant (epsilon) of the pore fluids on the geotechnical properties of fine-grained materials.

Side chain homologated derivatives of 2-chloro-3-(n-alkylamino)-1,4-naphthoquinone {n-alkyl: pentyl; L-5, hexyl; L-6, heptyl; L-7 and octyl; L-8} have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, H-1 NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy and LC-MS. Compounds, L-4, n-alkyl: butyl; L-4}, L-6 and L-8 have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The single crystal X-ray structures reveal that L-4 and L-8 crystallizes in P2(1) space group, while L-6 in P2(1)/c space group. Molecules of L-4 and L-8 from polymeric chains through C-H center dot center dot center dot O and N-H center dot center dot center dot O close contacts. L-6 is a dimer formed by N-H center dot center dot center dot O interaction. Slipped pi-pi stacking interactions are observed between quinonoid and benzenoid rings of L-4 and L-8. Orientations of alkyl group in L-4 and L-8 is on same side of the chain and polymeric chains run opposite to one another to form zip like structure to the alkyl groups. Antiproliferative activities of L-1 to L-8{n-alkyl: methyl; L-1, ethyl; L-2, propyl; L-3 and butyl; L-4} were studied in cancer cells of colon (COLO205), brain (U87MG) and pancreas (MIAPaCa2) where L-1, L-2 and L-3 were active in MIAPaCa2 (L-1 = 1-2 > L-3) and COLO205 (L-2 = L-3 > L-1) and inactive in U87MG. From antiproliferative studies with compounds L-1 to L-8 it can be concluded that homologation of 2-chloro-3-(n-alkylamino)-1,4-napthoquinone with saturated methyl groups yielded tissue specific compounds such as L-2 (for MIAPaCa2) and L-3 (for COLO205) with optimal activity. We investigate the isentropic index along the saturated vapor line as a correlating parameter with quantities both in the saturated liquid phase and the saturated vapor phase. The relation is established via temperatures such as T-hgmax and T* where the saturated vapor enthalpy and the product of saturation temperature and saturated liquid density attain a maximum, respectively. We obtain that the saturated vapor isentropic index is correlated with these temperatures but also with the saturated liquid Gruneisen parameters at T-hgmax. and T*.

A facile ring opening of furans in furyl propargyl alcohols to the corresponding saturated gamma-keto esters is observed in the gold(III) chloride catalyzed reaction with MeOH. It is found that the ring opening of furan is driven by the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation. Mitigating the intramolecular hydroalkoxylation led to the expected conjugated enyne resulting from the dehydration. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A theoretical analysis of instability of saturated soil is presented considering the simple shearing of a heat conducting thermo-visco-plastic material. It is shown that the instability is mainly the consequence of thermal softening which overcomes the strain hardening and the other type of instability is controlled by strain softening. The effects of other factors such as permeability to the instability are discussed in this paper.

In this paper. the dynamic instability of simple shear of saturated soil is discussed. The governing equations are obtained based on mixture theory in which the inertia effect and the compressibility of grains are considered. Perturbation method is used to analyze and it is shown that two types of instability may exist. One of them is dominated by pore-pressure-softening, while the other by strain-softening.

In order to investigate the characteristics of water wave induced liquefaction in highly saturated sand in vertical direction, a one-dimensional model of highly saturated sand to water pressure oscillation is presented based oil the two-phase continuous media theory. The development of the effective stresses and the liquefaction thickness are analyzed. It is shown that water pressure oscillating loading affects liquefaction severely and the developing rate of liquefaction increases with the decreasing of the sand strength or the increasing of the loading strength. It is shown also that there is obvious phase lag in the sand Column. If the sand permeability is non-uniform, the pore pressure and the strain rise sharply at which the smallest permeability occurs. This solution may explain Why the fracture occurs in the sand column in some conditions.

The multi-layers feedforward neural network is used for inversion of material constants of fluid-saturated porous media. The direct analysis of fluid-saturated porous media is carried out with the boundary element method. The dynamic displacement responses obtained from direct analysis for prescribed material parameters constitute the sample sets training neural network. By virtue of the effective L-M training algorithm and the Tikhonov regularization method as well as the GCV method for an appropriate selection of regularization parameter, the inverse mapping from dynamic displacement responses to material constants is performed. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity of the neural network method.

An analytical solution for the three-dimensional scattering and diffraction of plane P-waves by a hemispherical alluvial valley with saturated soil deposits is developed by employing Fourier-Bessel series expansion technique. Unlike previous studies, in which the saturated soil deposits were simulated with the single-phase elastic theory, in this paper, they are simulated with Biot's dynamic theory for saturated porous media, and the half space is assumed as a single-phase elastic medium. The effects of the dimensionless frequency, the incidence angle of P-wave and the porosity of soil deposits on the surface displacement magnifications of the hemispherical alluvial valley are investigated. Numerical results show that the existence of a saturated hemispherical alluvial valley has much influence on the surface displacement magnifications. It is more reasonable to simulate soil deposits with Biot's dynamic theory when evaluating the displacement responses of a hemispherical alluvial valley with an incidence of P-waves.
