'Between a rock and a hard place':towards a theorisation of the role of gender in junior management

This paper seeks to theorise the role that gender plays in the careers of junior female managers. We do this by drawing upon two separate empirical studies, firstly a largescale study based on interviews with female managers in the West Midlands (UK) is used to explore the growth of female participation in junior managerial roles with reference to the notion of managerial careers as seduction. We explore the routes the women have taken into junior management careers and the barriers that exist to progression toward more senior roles. Secondly, a small-scale ethnographic study of a large service-based organization, also based in the West Midlands, is documented in an attempt to theorise the organizational role of female junior managers. While the dominance of masculine values and practices in organisations is explored, we also argue that growing female participation at junior managerial levels can only partly be explained by female managers adopting, or appearing to adopt, masculine behaviours. We seek to contribute to a fuller explanation by drawing attention to the way in which senior managers in the case study sought to employ female junior managers particularly for their perceived feminine skills. Significantly, however the ethnography reveals the ambiguously gendered construction of female junior managers roles through an exploration of the enactment of both masculine and feminine practices during the ‘doing’ of management.

Between a rock and a hard place:exploring women's experience of participation and progress in managerial careers

Purpose – The growth of women in management has been argued to offer a route to reduce organizational and social inequality. The purpose of this paper is to explore the careers and experiences of female managers from a variety of organizations operating in the West Midlands region of the UK. Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on 56 interviews conducted with women managers within various sectors. The interviewees also completed pictorial careers maps, which along with interview recordings were analyzed. Findings – The key themes to emerge from this research centre upon the factors that draw women into management (which we term seductive elements) as well as some of the hindering practices that prevent women from progressing. Significantly, we find that managerial careers are associated with gendered assumptions and practices (e.g. facilitating and developing people) which contribute to construct management (done by women) as bounded-up characteristically with “feminized” behaviours. Research limitations/implications – The research is based upon a relatively small sample that is multi-sectorial. Wider studies that increase population size, together with deeper studies that hold sectorial variables constant would further add weight to the findings presented here. Practical implications – The paper draws attention to the “lived reality” of doing management, which, we argue often, for women in particular involves the reconciliation of contradictions and conflicting pressures. We draw attention to the lack of “alternative models” of organization and highlight the potential for gender-focus mentoring and management education. Originality/value – The paper is of value in giving voice to a selection of women managers by allowing them to reflect upon and explore their experience of management. The paper also documents the day-to-day reality of women's managerial careers that require the re-enactment and reproduction of stereotypical gender norms.

Pitch and roll sensing using fibre Bragg gratings in multicore fibre

We report the first use of a multicore fibre incorporating fibre Bragg grating strain sensors in each core as a fibre optic pitch and roll sensor. A length of four-core fibre supported at one end forms a cantilever. The differential strains between opposite grating pairs depend on the fibre’s orientation in pitch (in the vertical plane) and roll (azimuth) with respect to gravity. Resolutions of ±2◦ in roll and ±15◦ in pitch were measured.

Mineralogical (bulk rock and clay fraction) and stable isotope composition (d13C, d18O) of Aptian deposits of the Bir Oum Ali succession, central Tunisia

Alternations between siliciclastic, carbonate and evaporitic sedimentary systems, as recorded in the Aptian mixed succession of southern Tunisia, reflect profound palaeoceanographic and palaeoclimatic changes in this area of the southern Tethyan margin. The evolution from Urgonian-type carbonates (Berrani Formation, lower Aptian) at the base of the series, to intervals dominated by gypsum or detrital deposits in the remainder of the Aptian is thought to result from the interplay between climate change and tectonic activity that affected North Africa. Based on the evolution of clay mineral assemblages, the early Aptian is interpreted as having been dominated by slightly humid conditions, since smectitic minerals are observed. Near the early to late Aptian boundary, the onset of a gypsiferous sedimentation is associated with the appearance of palygorskite and sepiolite, which supports the installation of arid conditions in this area of the southern Tethyan margin. The evaporitic sedimentation may have also been promoted by the peculiar tectonic setting of the Bir Oum Ali area during the Aptian, where local subsidence may have been tectonically enhanced linked to the opening of northern and central Atlantic. Stress associated with the west and central African rift systems may have triggered the development of NW-SE, hemi-graben structures. Uplifted areas may have constituted potential new sources for clastic material that has been subsequently deposited during the late Aptian. Chemostratigraphic (d13C) correlation of the Bir Oum Ali succession with other peri-Tethyan regions complements biostratigraphic findings, and indicates that a potential expression of the Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a may be preserved in this area of Tunisia. Although the characteristic negative spike at the base of this event is not recognized in the present study, a subsequent, large positive excursion with d13C values is of similar amplitude and absolute values to that reported from other peri-Tethyan regions, thus supporting the identification of isotopic segments C4-C7 of the OAE1a. The absence of the negative spike may be linked to either non preservation or non deposition: the OAE1a occurred in a global transgressive context, and since the Bir Oum Ali region was located in the innermost part of the southern Tethyan margin during most of the Aptian, stratigraphic hiatuses may have been longer than in other regions of the Tethys. This emphasizes the importance of integrating several stratigraphic disciplines (bio-, chemo- and sequence stratigraphy) when performing long-distance correlation.

La relaci?n del rock en el contexto pol?tico en el caso en particular de Argentina en la d?cada de los 80?s

En este trabajo de grado, se analiz? la relaci?n y el impacto del Rock and Roll en el caso particular de Argentina en la d?cada de los 80?s, tomando como referente central La Guerra de las Malvinas. El prop?sito de esta investigaci?n, fue evidenciar c?mo a trav?s de la m?sica y el arte, surgieron movimientos de car?cter social y cultural, que reivindicaron una serie de ideas pol?ticas en contra del Sistema de gobierno Militar instaurado en Argentina durante el periodo de (1976-1983). La relaci?n entre el rock y su influencia en el contexto pol?tico no est? todav?a plenamente documentado, por lo cual, este estudio es de car?cter exploratorio y recurri? a una revisi?n bibliogr?fica o an?lisis documental para realizar la descripci?n de cada uno de los objetivos planteados. Servir? como referente base para investigaciones futuras que profundicen el an?lisis del fen?meno en particular. El g?nero musical del Rock and Roll, emergi? como un s?mbolo de rebeld?a y protesta frente a un sistema de gobierno militar que limitaba los derechos fundamentales de la poblaci?n, entre ellos, el derecho a la libre expresi?n. Influencia del pick and roll en el juego de ataque en baloncesto de alto nivel

El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar las acciones del pick and roll y su influencia en el juego en baloncesto de alto nivel. Se analizó la eficacia táctica y de marcador en función de distintos factores que inciden en las situaciones de juego mediante un diseño observacional nomotético, puntual y multidimensional en 18 equipos de la liga ACB de baloncesto. Un instrumento observacional ad hoc (VTP & R) fue validado por un panel de 20 expertos de alto nivel y se comprobó la fiabilidad en la observación por parte de los investigadores. El análisis de datos se realizó mediante el análisis secuencial de retardos, el análisis de coordenadas polares y los estadísticos descriptivos cuantitativos. Del total de acciones analizadas (n=3895), el 25,3% se corresponden a pick and roll (n=984). Solo el 36,3% de las acciones de pick and roll se han mostrado eficaces en el marcador, mientras que el 85,7% lo son tácticamente. La interpretación de los resultados muestra el interés en complementar el análisis del juego en baloncesto a través de los mixed methods. La posibilidad de determinar qué acciones se realizan en cada momento del partido y de qué manera se ejecutan, así como establecer patrones de respuesta táctica en función de los distintos factores que intervienen en el juego, justifica la utilidad de los resultados aquí obtenidos y se concluye el interés en incorporar las distintas técnicas analíticas de la metodología observacional a los procesos de análisis del baloncesto.

Corneal Re-epithelialization Stimulated by Diadenosine Polyphosphates Recruits RhoA/ROCK and ERK1/2 Pathways

Purpose. To investigate the role of ERK1/2 and RhoA/ROCK intracellular pathways in the modification of corneal re-epithelialization when stimulated by the diadenosine polyphosphates Ap4A and Ap3A. Methods. In wounded confluent SIRC (Statens Seruminstitut rabbit cornea) cell monolayers and in the presence or absence of Ap4A or Ap3A 100 μM, a battery of P2 receptor antagonists and inhibitors of tyrosin kinases, MAPK, and cytoskeleton pathways (AG1478 100 μM, U0126 100 μM, Y27632 100 nM, and (−)-blebbistatin 10 μM; n = 8 each) were assayed. Also, the activation of ERK1/2 and ROCK-I was examined by Western blot assay after treatment with Ap4A and Ap3A (100 μM), with or without suramin, RB-2, U0126, and Y27632. The intracellular distribution of pERK and ROCK-I was examined in the presence of Ap4A or Ap3A (100 μM) with U0126 and Y27632 (100 nM). Results. In the presence of Ap4A, U0126, Y27632, AG1478, and (−)-blebbistatin, reduced the migration rate compared to the effect of Ap4A alone (P < 0.0001, P < 0.001, P < 0.01, and P < 0.1 versus Ap4A, respectively). In the presence of Ap3A 100 μM, U0126 and Y27632 accelerated the migration rate when compared with the effect of Ap3A alone, whereas AG1478 and (−)-blebbistatin (P < 0.0001 versus Ap3A) slowed the migration rate. Western blot assays demonstrated that both dinucleotides activated the ERK1/2 pathway but only Ap4A activated the ROCK-I pathway. The intracellular distribution of pERK1/2 and ROCK-I reflected cross-talk between these two pathways. Conclusions. The activation of the Ap4A/P2Y2 receptor, accelerates corneal epithelial cell migration during wound healing with the activation of MAPK and cytoskeleton pathways, whereas activation of the Ap3A/P2Y6 receptor signals only the MAPK pathway.

Viaje a través de la música.

El proyecto pretende que los alumnos desarrollen la expresión musical y se eduquen en un clima de convivencia y respeto hacia la diversidad cultural. Utiliza como eje la evolución de la música a través del tiempo, como lenguaje universal de todas las épocas. En la experiencia participan otros cinco centros. Los objetivos son acercar a los alumnos a la música clásica; potenciar la adquisición del lenguaje musical como forma de comunicación universal; organizar un festival de música clásica en el que se intercambien experiencias artístico-musicales de los alumnos; favorecer el trabajo en equipo; realizar producciones artístico-musicales de forma cooperativa; y desarrollar un espíritu crítico ante los diferentes tipos de música. Se elaboran las propuestas en pequeños grupos, y en gran grupo se decide su puesta en escena. A cada nivel o clase le corresponde representar una época a través de una danza, canción u orquestación. Las actividades del centro coordinador son la construcción de la máquina del tiempo para el festival; repaso musical y aprendizaje de una obra; estudio de la Edad Media mediante una exposición de castillos medievales, aprendizaje de una danza, y creación de vestidos; las familias confeccionan disfraces, elaboran decorados y realizan el servicio de ujieres en el festival; Taller de fotografía; Taller de plástica; Taller de música; instrumentación y la coreografía de la Danza húngara 5 de Brahms; dos coreografías sobre el jazz y el rock and roll; y guiones radiofónicos sobre estilos musicales del siglo XX; coreografías para La danza ritual del fuego, de Falla, y El baile de Cromagnon, sobre la Prehistoria; instrumentación y dos coreografías para la Marcha y danza rusa del Cascanueces, de Tchaikovsky; interpretación con percusión de La marcha turca de Las ruinas de Atenas, de Beethoven; la instrumentación y la danza barroca de la Contradanza, de Música acuática de Haendel; la coreografía y el acompañamiento instrumental para el Momento musical, de Schubert; cartel Viaje a través de la música, por un profesor; y las familias elaboran los trajes para el festival.
