Purpose - To describe the utility of three of the main cognitive neuroscientific techniques currently in use within the neuroscience community, and how they can be applied to the emerging field of neuromarket research. Design/methodology/approach - A brief development of functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalography and transcranial magnetic stimulation are described, as the core principles are behind their respective use. Examples of actual data from each of the brain imaging techniques are provided to assist the neuromarketer with subsequent data for interpretation. Finally, to ensure the neuromarketer has an understanding of the experience of neuroimaging, qualitative data from a questionnaire exploring attitudes about neuroimaging techniques are included which summarize participants' experiences of having a brain scan. Findings - Cognitive neuroscientific techniques have great utility in market research and can provide more "honest" indicators of consumer preference where traditional methods such as focus groups can be unreliable. These techniques come with complementary strengths which allow the market researcher to converge onto a specific research question. In general, participants considered brain imaging techniques to be relatively safe. However, care is urged to ensure that participants are positioned correctly in the scanner as incorrect positioning is a stressful factor during an imaging procedure that can impact data quality. Originality/value - This paper is an important and comprehensive resource to the market researcher who wishes to use cognitive neuroscientific techniques.

Although the importance of translation for the development of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and cell-based therapies is widely recognized, the process of translation is less well understood. This is particularly the case among some early career researchers who may not appreciate the intricacies of translational research or make decisions early in development which later hinders effective translation. Based on our own research and experiences as early career researchers involved in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine translation, we discuss common pitfalls associated with translational research, providing practical solutions and important considerations which will aid process and product development. Suggestions range from effective project management, consideration of key manufacturing, clinical and regulatory matters and means of exploiting research for successful commercialization.

Background: Government policy and national practice guidelines have created an increasing need for autism services to adopt an evidence-based practice approach. However, a gap continues to exist between research evidence and its application. This study investigated the difference between autism researchers and practitioners in their methods of acquiring knowledge. Methods: In a questionnaire study, 261 practitioners and 422 researchers reported on the methods they use and perceive to be beneficial for increasing research access and knowledge. They also reported on their level of engagement with members of the other professional community. Results: Researchers and practitioners reported different methods used to access information. Each group, however, had similar overall priorities regarding access to research information. While researchers endorsed the use of academic journals significantly more often than practitioners, both groups included academic journals in their top three choices. The groups differed in the levels of engagement they reported; researchers indicated they were more engaged with practitioners than vice versa. Conclusions: Comparison of researcher and practitioner preferences led to several recommendations to improve knowledge sharing and translation, including enhancing access to original research publications, facilitating informal networking opportunities and the development of proposals for the inclusion of practitioners throughout the research process.

Ian Jacobs BAppSc (WAIT), DipEd (Murd), PhD (WAust), RN, FRCNA, FACAP, FERC, Chairman of the Australian Resuscitation Council and co-chair of the International Liaison Committee On Resuscitation died suddenly on the 19th October 2014. He collapsed due to a cerebral haemorrhage while on the job, having delivered a critically ill patient to the Emergency Department of the Royal Perth Hospital, sadly he did not recover. This article reveals something of his enormous influence on and contributions to nursing, pre-hospital and emergency medicine, critical care and resuscitation on a national, and international scale.

This paper presents a rationale for arts-based practices in music therapy research, and provides an example of using ABR techniques in research. Arts-based materials are increasingly demonstrated to have the capacity to extend processes of reflexivity and analysis in a range of qualitative health research studies. By comparison, music therapy research studies have rarely employed arts-based methods or techniques. There is a need for more studies in music therapy that employ arts-based research to demystify and elaborate a wider range of creative approaches within music therapy inquiry. In the study described in this paper, ABR was used to reflect on the contribution of a service user in a community mental health context who participated in a focus group about his experiences of music therapy. ABR was found to offer a creative way to engage service users, and to deepen and extend the researcher's reflexivity when responding to materials created by research participants.

Alongside the role of the teacher-as-researcher specifically in low SES communities, we are interested in the alternative discourses and identities that become possible in “figured worlds” where teachers are positioned, and position themselves, as researchers. We consider the questions: What discourses, artefacts and identities are typically associated with low SES schools? What is/could be distinctive about teacher research in low SES settings? How might teacher research in low SES settings contribute to the production of alternative discourses and learner/teacher relationships and identities?

In this presentation, I draw on my research encounters with schools and classrooms, together with contemporary movements in social theory and research, to propose a conceptualisation of ‘place-based inquiry’. Three areas of theory are drawn upon: (1) ‘Practice’ ontologies and associated moves towards ‘philosophical-empirical inquiry’ (Green & Hopwood, 2015) provide a warrant for thinking more closely and looking more closely in social research; (2) more-than-representational theory (Anderson & Harrison, 2010) problematizes the notion of the work and impacts of research, raising implications for the ambitions of research undertakings; and, (3) place-based pedagogies (e.g., Gruenewald, 2003) support a sentiment and model for an openly transformational social inquiry. These synergistic areas of theory are used here to frame a practice that recognises the more-than-representational work of research and how this work might be harnessed in more explicit and more deliberate ways to support educational change. I tentatively characterise this practice as that of an inhabitant-researcher, drawing on Orr’s (1992, p. 130) distinction between residing and inhabiting, where inhabiting involves “mutually nurturing relationship with a place”. The inhabitant-researcher attempts to engage research participants in both decolonising and reinhabiting encounters, and to make contributions that are both critical and generative, representational and more-than-representational.
