The International GNSS Service (IGS) provides operational products for the GPS and GLONASS constellation. Homogeneously processed time series of parameters from the IGS are only available for GPS. Reprocessed GLONASS series are provided only by individual Analysis Centers (i. e. CODE and ESA), making it difficult to fully include the GLONASS system into a rigorous GNSS analysis. In view of the increasing number of active GLONASS satellites and a steadily growing number of GPS+GLONASS-tracking stations available over the past few years, Technische Universität Dresden, Technische Universität München, Universität Bern and Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich performed a combined reprocessing of GPS and GLONASS observations. Also, SLR observations to GPS and GLONASS are included in this reprocessing effort. Here, we show only SLR results from a GNSS orbit validation. In total, 18 years of data (1994–2011) have been processed from altogether 340 GNSS and 70 SLR stations. The use of GLONASS observations in addition to GPS has no impact on the estimated linear terrestrial reference frame parameters. However, daily station positions show an RMS reduction of 0.3 mm on average for the height component when additional GLONASS observations can be used for the time series determination. Analyzing satellite orbit overlaps, the rigorous combination of GPS and GLONASS neither improves nor degrades the GPS orbit precision. For GLONASS, however, the quality of the microwave-derived GLONASS orbits improves due to the combination. These findings are confirmed using independent SLR observations for a GNSS orbit validation. In comparison to previous studies, mean SLR biases for satellites GPS-35 and GPS-36 could be reduced in magnitude from −35 and −38 mm to −12 and −13 mm, respectively. Our results show that remaining SLR biases depend on the satellite type and the use of coated or uncoated retro-reflectors. For Earth rotation parameters, the increasing number of GLONASS satellites and tracking stations over the past few years leads to differences between GPS-only and GPS+GLONASS combined solutions which are most pronounced in the pole rate estimates with maximum 0.2 mas/day in magnitude. At the same time, the difference between GLONASS-only and combined solutions decreases. Derived GNSS orbits are used to estimate combined GPS+GLONASS satellite clocks, with first results presented in this paper. Phase observation residuals from a precise point positioning are at the level of 2 mm and particularly reveal poorly modeled yaw maneuver periods.

The indirect solar radiation pressure caused by reflected or re-emitted radiation by the Earth’s surface is an important non-gravitational force perturbing the orbits of geodetic satellites (Rubincam and Weiss, 1986; Martin and Rubincam, 1996). In the case of LAGEOS this acceleration is of the order of 15% of the direct solar radiation pressure. Therefore, Earth radiation pressure has a non-negligible impact not only on LAGEOS orbits, but also on the SLR-derived terrestrial reference frame. We investigate the impact of the Earth radiation pressure on LAGEOS orbits and on the SLR-derived parameters. Earth radiation pressure has a remarkable impact on the semi-major axes of the LAGEOS satellites, causing a systematic reduction of 1.5 mm. The infrared Earth radiation causes a reduction of about 1.0 mm and the Earth’s reflectivity of 0.5 mm of the LAGEOS’ semi-major axes. The global scale defined by the SLR network is changed by 0.07 ppb, when applying Earth radiation pressure. The resulting station heights differ by 0.5-0.6 mm in the solution with and without Earth radiation pressure. However, when range biases are estimated, the height differences are absorbed by the range biases, and thus, the station heights are not shifted.

Standard stereotaxic reference systems play a key role in human brain studies. Stereotaxic coordinate systems have also been developed for experimental animals including non-human primates, dogs, and rodents. However, they are lacking for other species being relevant in experimental neuroscience including sheep. Here, we present a spatial, unbiased ovine brain template with tissue probability maps (TPM) that offer a detailed stereotaxic reference frame for anatomical features and localization of brain areas, thereby enabling inter-individual and cross-study comparability. Three-dimensional data sets from healthy adult Merino sheep (Ovis orientalis aries, 12 ewes and 26 neutered rams) were acquired on a 1.5 T Philips MRI using a T1w sequence. Data were averaged by linear and non-linear registration algorithms. Moreover, animals were subjected to detailed brain volume analysis including examinations with respect to body weight (BW), age, and sex. The created T1w brain template provides an appropriate population-averaged ovine brain anatomy in a spatial standard coordinate system. Additionally, TPM for gray (GM) and white (WM) matter as well as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) classification enabled automatic prior-based tissue segmentation using statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Overall, a positive correlation of GM volume and BW explained about 15% of the variance of GM while a positive correlation between WM and age was found. Absolute tissue volume differences were not detected, indeed ewes showed significantly more GM per bodyweight as compared to neutered rams. The created framework including spatial brain template and TPM represent a useful tool for unbiased automatic image preprocessing and morphological characterization in sheep. Therefore, the reported results may serve as a starting point for further experimental and/or translational research aiming at in vivo analysis in this species.

Controversy has surrounded the issue of whether mantle plume activity was responsible for Pangaean continental rifting and massive flood volcanism (resulting in the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province or CAMP, emplaced around 200 Ma) preceding the opening of the central Atlantic Ocean in the Early Mesozoic. Our new Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic and trace element data for the oldest basalts sampled from central Atlantic oceanic crust by deep-sea drilling show that oceanic crust generated from about 160 to 120 Ma displays clear isotopic and chemical signals of plume contamination (e.g., 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7032-0.7036, epsilonNd(t) =+6.2 to +8.2, incompatible element patterns with positive Nb anomalies), but these signals are muted or absent in crust generated between 120 and 80 Ma, which resembles young Atlantic normal mid-ocean ridge basalt. The plume-affected pre-120 Ma Atlantic crustal basalts are isotopically similar to lavas from the Ontong Java Plateau, and may represent one isotopic end-member for CAMP basalts. The strongest plume signature is displayed near the center of CAMP magmatism but the hotspots presently located nearest this location in the mantle reference frame do not appear to be older than latest Cretaceous and are isotopically distinct from the oldest Atlantic crust. The evidence for widespread plume contamination of the nascent Atlantic upper mantle, combined with a lack of evidence for a long-lived volcanic chain associated with this plume, leads us to propose that the enriched signature of early Atlantic crust and possibly the eruption of the CAMP were caused by a relatively short-lived, but large volume plume feature that was not rooted at a mantle boundary layer. Such a phenomenon has been predicted by recent numerical models of mantle circulation.

Combined geodetic, geophysical and glaciological in situ measurements are interpreted regarding surface height changes over subglacial Lake Vostok and the local mass balance of the ice sheet at Vostok station. Repeated GPS observations spanning 5 years and long-term surface accumulation data show that the height of the lake surface has not changed over the observation period. The application of the mass conservation equation to purely observational data yields an ice mass balance for Vostok station close to equilibrium.

The main purpose of robot calibration is the correction of the possible errors in the robot parameters. This paper presents a method for a kinematic calibration of a parallel robot that is equipped with one camera in hand. In order to preserve the mechanical configuration of the robot, the camera is utilized to acquire incremental positions of the end effector from a spherical object that is fixed in the word reference frame. The positions of the end effector are related to incremental positions of resolvers of the motors of the robot, and a kinematic model of the robot is used to find a new group of parameters which minimizes errors in the kinematic equations. Additionally, properties of the spherical object and intrinsic camera parameters are utilized to model the projection of the object in the image and improving spatial measurements. Finally, the robotic system is designed to carry out tracking tasks and the calibration of the robot is validated by means of integrating the errors of the visual controller.

El Instituto Geográfico Nacional, por medio del Área de Geodesia, está llevando a cabo el establecimiento de una Red de Estaciones Permanentes GPS que permitan obtener coordenadas muy precisas, así como sus campos de velocidades en un Sistema de Referencia Global (ITRFxx). Dichas estaciones pertenecen a la Red de Estaciones Permanentes de EUREF (EUropean REference Frame) y constituyen el orden cero de la Geodesia Española.

En las últimas décadas el aumento de la velocidad y la disminución del peso de los vehículos ferroviarios de alta velocidad ha provocado que aumente su riesgo de vuelco. Además, las exigencias de los trazados de las líneas exige en ocasiones la construcción de viaductos muy altos situados en zonas expuestas a fuertes vientos. Esta combinación puede poner en peligro la seguridad de la circulación. En esta tesis doctoral se estudian los efectos dinámicos que aparecen en los vehículos ferroviarios cuando circulan sobre viaductos en presencia de vientos transversales. Para ello se han desarrollado e implementado una serie de modelos numéricos que permiten estudiar estos efectos de una forma realista y general. Los modelos desarrollados permiten analizar la interacción dinámica tridimensional tren-estructura, formulada mediante coordenadas absolutas en un sistema de referencia inercial, en un contexto de elementos _nitos no lineales. Mediante estos modelos se pueden estudiar de forma realista casos extremos como el vuelco o descarrilamiento de los vehículos. Han sido implementados en Abaqus, utilizando sus capacidades para resolver sistemas multi-cuerpo para el vehículo y elementos finitos para la estructura. La interacción entre el vehículo y la estructura se establece a través del contacto entre rueda y carril. Para ello, se han desarrollado una restricción, que permite establecer la relación cinemática entre el eje ferroviario y la vía, teniendo en cuenta los posibles defectos geométricos de la vía; y un modelo de contacto rueda-carril para establecer la interacción entre el vehículo y la estructura. Las principales características del modelo de contacto son: considera la geometría real de ambos cuerpos de forma tridimensional; permite resolver situaciones en las que el contacto entre rueda y carril se da en más de una zona a la vez; y permite utilizar distintas formulaciones para el cálculo de la tensión tangencial entre ambos cuerpos. Además, se ha desarrollado una metodología para determinar, a partir de formulaciones estocásticas, las historias temporales de cargas aerodinámicas debidas al viento turbulento en estructuras grandes y con pilas altas y flexibles. Esta metodología tiene cuenta la variabilidad espacial de la velocidad de viento, considerando la correlación entre los distintos puntos; considera las componentes de la velocidad del viento en tres dimensiones; y permite el cálculo de la velocidad de viento incidente sobre los vehículos que atraviesan la estructura. La metodología desarrollada en este trabajo ha sido implementada, validada y se ha aplicado a un caso concreto en el que se ha estudiado la respuesta de un tren de alta velocidad, similar al Siemens Velaro, circulando sobre el viaducto del río Ulla en presencia viento cruzado. En este estudio se ha analizado la seguridad y el confort de la circulación y la respuesta dinámica de la estructura cuando el tren cruza el viaducto. During the last decades the increase of the speed and the reduction of the weight of high-speed railway vehicles has led to a rise of the overturn risk. In addition, the design requests of the railway lines require some times the construction of very tall viaducts in strong wind areas. This combination may endanger the traffic safety. In this doctoral thesis the dynamic effects that appear in the railway vehicles when crossing viaducts under strong winds are studied. For this purpose it has been developed and implemented numerical models for studying these effects in a realistic and general way. The developed models allow to analyze the train-structure three-dimensional dynamic interaction, that is formulated by using absolute coordinates in an inertial reference frame within a non-linear finite element framework. By means of these models it is possible to study in a realistic way extreme situations such vehicle overturn or derailment. They have been implemented for Abaqus, by using its capabilities for solving multi-body systems for the vehicle and finite elements for the structure. The interaction between the vehicle and the structure is established through the wheel-rail contact. For this purpose, a constraint has been developed. It allows to establish the kinematic relationship between the railway wheelset and the track, taking into account the track irregularities. In addition, a wheel-rail contact model for establishing the interaction of the vehicle and the structure has been developed. Desde la aparición del turborreactor, el motor aeróbico con turbomaquinaria ha demostrado unas prestaciones excepcionales en los regímenes subsónico y supersónico bajo. No obstante, la operación a velocidades superiores requiere sistemas más complejos y pesados, lo cual ha imposibilitado la ejecución de estos conceptos. Los recientes avances tecnológicos, especialmente en materiales ligeros, han restablecido el interés por los motores de ciclo combinado. La simulación numérica de estos nuevos conceptos es esencial para estimar las prestaciones de la planta propulsiva, así como para abordar las dificultades de integración entre célula y motor durante las primeras etapas de diseño. Al mismo tiempo, la evaluación de estos extraordinarios motores requiere una metodología de análisis distinta. La tesis doctoral versa sobre el diseño y el análisis de los mencionados conceptos propulsivos mediante el modelado numérico y la simulación dinámica con herramientas de vanguardia. Las distintas arquitecturas presentadas por los ciclos combinados basados en sendos turborreactor y motor cohete, así como los diversos sistemas comprendidos en cada uno de ellos, hacen necesario establecer una referencia común para su evaluación. Es más, la tendencia actual hacia aeronaves "más eléctricas" requiere una nueva métrica para juzgar la aptitud de un proceso de generación de empuje en el que coexisten diversas formas de energía. A este respecto, la combinación del Primer y Segundo Principios define, en un marco de referencia absoluto, la calidad de la trasferencia de energía entre los diferentes sistemas. Esta idea, que se ha estado empleando desde hace mucho tiempo en el análisis de plantas de potencia terrestres, ha sido extendida para relacionar la misión de la aeronave con la ineficiencia de cada proceso involucrado en la generación de empuje. La metodología se ilustra mediante el estudio del motor de ciclo combinado variable de una aeronave para el crucero a Mach 5. El diseño de un acelerador de ciclo combinado basado en el turborreactor sirve para subrayar la importancia de la integración del motor y la célula. El diseño está limitado por la trayectoria ascensional y el espacio disponible en la aeronave de crucero supersónico. Posteriormente se calculan las prestaciones instaladas de la planta propulsiva en función de la velocidad y la altitud de vuelo y los parámetros de control del motor: relación de compresión, relación aire/combustible y área de garganta. ABSTRACT Since the advent of the turbojet, the air-breathing engine with rotating machinery has demonstrated exceptional performance in the subsonic and low supersonic regimes. However, the operation at higher speeds requires further system complexity and weight, which so far has impeded the realization of these concepts. Recent technology developments, especially in lightweight materials, have restored the interest towards combined-cycle engines. The numerical simulation of these new concepts is essential at the early design stages to compute a first estimate of the engine performance in addition to addressing airframe-engine integration issues. In parallel, a different analysis methodology is required to evaluate these unconventional engines. The doctoral thesis concerns the design and analysis of the aforementioned engine concepts by means of numerical modeling and dynamic simulation with state-of-the-art tools. A common reference is needed to evaluate the different architectures of the turbine and the rocket-based combined-cycle engines as well as the various systems within each one of them. Furthermore, the actual trend towards more electric aircraft necessitates a common metric to judge the suitability of a thrust generation process where different forms of energy coexist. In line with this, the combination of the First and the Second Laws yields the quality of the energy being transferred between the systems on an absolute reference frame. This idea, which has been since long applied to the analysis of on-ground power plants, was extended here to relate the aircraft mission with the inefficiency of every process related to the thrust generation. The methodology is illustrated with the study of a variable- combined-cycle engine for a Mach 5 cruise aircraft. The design of a turbine-based combined-cycle booster serves to highlight the importance of the engine-airframe integration. The design is constrained by the ascent trajectory and the allocated space in the supersonic cruise aircraft. The installed performance of the propulsive plant is then computed as a function of the flight speed and altitude and the engine control parameters: pressure ratio, air-to-fuel ratio and throat area.

El primer procesamiento estricto realizado con el software científico Bernese y contemplando las más estrictas normas de cálculo recomendadas internacionalmente, permitió obtener un campo puntual de alta exactitud, basado en la integración y estandarización de los datos de una red GPS ubicada en Costa Rica. Este procesamiento contempló un total de 119 semanas de datos diarios, es decir unos 2,3 años, desde enero del año 2009 hasta abril del año 2011, para un total de 30 estaciones GPS, de las cuales 22 están ubicadas en el territorio nacional de Costa Rica y 8 internaciones pertenecientes a la red del Sistema Geocéntrico para las Américas (SIRGAS). Las denominadas soluciones semilibres generaron, semana a semana, una red GPS con una alta exactitud interna definida por medio de los vectores entre las estaciones y las coordenadas finales de la constelación satelital. La evaluación semanal dada por la repetibilidad de las soluciones brindó en promedio errores de 1,7 mm, 1,4 mm y 5,1 mm en las componentes [n e u], confirmando una alta consistencia en estas soluciones. Aunque las soluciones semilibres poseen una alta exactitud interna, las mismas no son utilizables para fines de análisis cinemático, pues carecen de un marco de referencia. En Latinoamérica, la densificación del Marco Internacional Terrestre de Referencia (ITRF), está representado por la red de estaciones de operación continua GNSS de SIRGAS, denominada como SIRGAS-CON. Por medio de las denominadas coordenadas semanales finales de las 8 estaciones consideradas como vínculo, se refirió cada una de las 119 soluciones al marco SIRGAS. La introducción del marco de referencia SIRGAS a las soluciones semilibres produce deformaciones en estas soluciones. Las deformaciones de las soluciones semilibres son producto de las cinemática de cada una de las placas en las que se ubican las estaciones de vínculo. Luego de efectuado el amarre semanal a las coordenadas SIRGAS, se hizo una estimación de los vectores de velocidad de cada una de las estaciones, incluyendo las de amarre, cuyos valores de velocidad se conocen con una alta exactitud. Para la determinación de las velocidades de las estaciones costarricenses, se programó una rutina en ambiente MatLab, basada en una ajuste por mínimos cuadrados. Los valores obtenidos en el marco de este proyecto en comparación con los valores oficiales, brindaron diferencias promedio del orden de los 0,06 cm/a, -0,08 cm/a y -0,10 cm/a respectivamente para las coordenadas [X Y Z]. De esta manera se logró determinar las coordenadas geocéntricas [X Y Z]T y sus variaciones temporales [vX vY vZ]T para el conjunto de 22 estaciones GPS de Costa Rica, dentro del datum IGS05, época de referencia 2010,5. Aunque se logró una alta exactitud en los vectores de coordenadas geocéntricas de las 22 estaciones, para algunas de las estaciones el cálculo de las velocidades no fue representativo debido al relativo corto tiempo (menos de un año) de archivos de datos. Bajo esta premisa, se excluyeron las ocho estaciones ubicadas al sur de país. Esto implicó hacer una estimación del campo local de velocidades con solamente veinte estaciones nacionales más tres estaciones en Panamá y una en Nicaragua. El algoritmo usado fue el denominado Colocación por Mínimos Cuadrados, el cual permite la estimación o interpolación de datos a partir de datos efectivamente conocidos, el cual fue programado mediante una rutina en ambiente MatLab. El campo resultante se estimó con una resolución de 30' X 30' y es altamente constante, con una velocidad resultante promedio de 2,58 cm/a en una dirección de 40,8° en dirección noreste. Este campo fue validado con base en los datos del modelo VEMOS2009, recomendado por SIRGAS. Las diferencias de velocidad promedio para las estaciones usadas como insumo para el cálculo del campo fueron del orden los +0,63 cm/a y +0,22 cm/a para los valores de velocidad en latitud y longitud, lo que supone una buena determinación de los valores de velocidad y de la estimación de la función de covarianza empírica, necesaria para la aplicación del método de colocación. Además, la grilla usada como base para la interpolación brindó diferencias del orden de -0,62 cm/a y -0,12 cm/a para latitud y longitud. Adicionalmente los resultados de este trabajo fueron usados como insumo para hacer una aproximación en la definición del límite del llamado Bloque de Panamá dentro del territorio nacional de Costa Rica. El cálculo de las componentes del Polo de Euler por medio de una rutina programa en ambiente MatLab y aplicado a diferentes combinaciones de puntos no brindó mayores aportes a la definición física de este límite. La estrategia lo que confirmó fue simplemente la diferencia en la dirección de todos los vectores velocidad y no permitió reveló revelar con mayor detalle una ubicación de esta zona dentro del territorio nacional de Costa Rica. ABSTRACT The first strict processing performed with the Bernese scientific software and contemplating the highest standards internationally recommended calculation, yielded a precise field of high accuracy, based on the integration and standardization of data from a GPS network located in Costa Rica. This processing watched a total of 119 weeks of daily data, is about 2.3 years from January 2009 to April 2011, for a total of 30 GPS stations, of which 22 are located in the country of Costa Rica and 8 hospitalizations within the network of Geocentric System for the Americas (SIRGAS). The semi-free solutions generated, every week a GPS network with high internal accuracy defined by vectors between stations and the final coordinates of the satellite constellation. The weekly evaluation given by repeatability of the solutions provided in average errors of 1.7 mm 1.4 mm and 5.1 mm in the components [n e u], confirming a high consistency in these solutions. Although semi-free solutions have a high internal accuracy, they are not used for purposes of kinematic analysis, because they lack a reference frame. In Latin America, the densification of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), is represented by a network of continuously operating GNSS stations SIRGAS, known as SIRGAS-CON. Through weekly final coordinates of the 8 stations considered as a link, described each of the solutions to the frame 119 SIRGAS. The introduction of the frame SIRGAS to semi-free solutions generates deformations. The deformations of the semi-free solutions are products of the kinematics of each of the plates in which link stations are located. After SIRGAS weekly link to SIRGAS frame, an estimate of the velocity vectors of each of the stations was done. The velocity vectors for each SIRGAS stations are known with high accuracy. For this calculation routine in MatLab environment, based on a least squares fit was scheduled. The values obtained compared to the official values, gave average differences of the order of 0.06 cm/yr, -0.08 cm/yr and -0.10 cm/yr respectively for the coordinates [XYZ]. Thus was possible to determine the geocentric coordinates [XYZ]T and its temporal variations [vX vY vZ]T for the set of 22 GPS stations of Costa Rica, within IGS05 datum, reference epoch 2010.5. The high accuracy vector for geocentric coordinates was obtained, however for some stations the velocity vectors was not representative because of the relatively short time (less than one year) of data files. Under this premise, the eight stations located in the south of the country were excluded. This involved an estimate of the local velocity field with only twenty national stations plus three stations in Panama and Nicaragua. The algorithm used was Least Squares Collocation, which allows the estimation and interpolation of data from known data effectively. The algorithm was programmed with MatLab. The resulting field was estimated with a resolution of 30' X 30' and is highly consistent with a resulting average speed of 2.58 cm/y in a direction of 40.8° to the northeast. This field was validated based on the model data VEMOS2009 recommended by SIRGAS. The differences in average velocity for the stations used as input for the calculation of the field were of the order of +0.63 cm/yr, +0.22 cm/yr for the velocity values in latitude and longitude, which is a good determination velocity values and estimating the empirical covariance function necessary for implementing the method of application. Furthermore, the grid used as the basis for interpolation provided differences of about -0.62 cm/yr, -0.12 cm/yr to latitude and longitude. Additionally, the results of this investigation were used as input to an approach in defining the boundary of Panama called block within the country of Costa Rica. The calculation of the components of the Euler pole through a routine program in MatLab and applied to different combinations of points gave no further contributions to the physical definition of this limit. The strategy was simply confirming the difference in the direction of all the velocity vectors and not allowed to reveal more detail revealed a location of this area within the country of Costa Rica.

El principal objetivo de la tesis es estudiar el acoplamiento entre los subsistemas de control de actitud y de control térmico de un pequeño satélite, con el fin de buscar la solución a los problemas relacionados con la determinación de los parámetros de diseño. Se considera la evolución de la actitud y de las temperaturas del satélite bajo la influencia de dos estrategias de orientación diferentes: 1) estabilización magnética pasiva de la orientación (PMAS, passive magnetic attitude stabilization), y 2) control de actitud magnético activo (AMAC, active magnetic attitude control). En primer lugar se presenta el modelo matemático del problema, que incluye la dinámica rotacional y el modelo térmico. En el problema térmico se considera un satélite cúbico modelizado por medio de siete nodos (seis externos y uno interno) aplicando la ecuación del balance térmico. Una vez establecido el modelo matemático del problema, se estudia la evolución que corresponde a las dos estrategias mencionadas. La estrategia PMAS se ha seleccionado por su simplicidad, fiabilidad, bajo coste, ahorrando consumo de potencia, masa coste y complejidad, comparado con otras estrategias. Se ha considerado otra estrategia de control que consigue que el satélite gire a una velocidad requerida alrededor de un eje deseado de giro, pudiendo controlar su dirección en un sistema inercial de referencia, ya que frecuentemente el subsistema térmico establece requisitos de giro alrededor de un eje del satélite orientado en una dirección perpendicular a la radiación solar incidente. En relación con el problema térmico, para estudiar la influencia de la velocidad de giro en la evolución de las temperaturas en diversos puntos del satélite, se ha empleado un modelo térmico linealizado, obtenido a partir de la formulación no lineal aplicando un método de perturbaciones. El resultado del estudio muestra que el tiempo de estabilización de la temperatura y la influencia de las cargas periódicas externas disminuye cuando aumenta la velocidad de giro. Los cambios de temperatura se reducen hasta ser muy pequeños para velocidades de rotación altas. En relación con la estrategia PMAC se ha observado que a pesar de su uso extendido entre los micro y nano satélites todavía presenta problemas que resolver. Estos problemas están relacionados con el dimensionamiento de los parámetros del sistema y la predicción del funcionamiento en órbita. Los problemas aparecen debido a la dificultad en la determinación de las características magnéticas de los cuerpos ferromagnéticos (varillas de histéresis) que se utilizan como amortiguadores de oscilaciones en los satélites. Para estudiar este problema se presenta un modelo analítico que permite estimar la eficiencia del amortiguamiento, y que se ha aplicado al estudio del comportamiento en vuelo de varios satélites, y que se ha empleado para comparar los resultados del modelo con los obtenidos en vuelo, observándose que el modelo permite explicar satisfactoriamente el comportamiento registrado. ABSTRACT The main objective of this thesis is to study the coupling between the attitude control and thermal control subsystems of a small satellite, and address the solution to some existing issues concerning the determination of their parameters. Through the thesis the attitude and temperature evolution of the satellite is studied under the influence of two independent attitude stabilization and control strategies: (1) passive magnetic attitude stabilization (PMAS), and (2) active magnetic attitude control (AMAC). In this regard the mathematical model of the problem is explained and presented. The mathematical model includes both the rotational dynamics and the thermal model. The thermal model is derived for a cubic satellite by solving the heat balance equation for 6 external and 1 internal nodes. Once established the mathematical model of the problem, the above mentioned attitude strategies were applied to the system and the temperature evolution of the 7 nodes of the satellite was studied. The PMAS technique has been selected to be studied due to its prevalent use, simplicity, reliability, and cost, as this strategy significantly saves the overall power, weight, cost, and reduces the complexity of the system compared to other attitude control strategies. In addition to that, another control law that provides the satellite with a desired spin rate along a desired axis of the satellite, whose direction can be controlled with respect to the inertial reference frame is considered, as the thermal subsystem of a satellite usually demands a spin requirement around an axis of the satellite which is positioned perpendicular to the direction of the coming solar radiation. Concerning the thermal problem, to study the influence of spin rate on temperature evolution of the satellite a linear approach of the thermal model is used, which is based on perturbation theory applied to the nonlinear differential equations of the thermal model of a spacecraft moving in a closed orbit. The results of this study showed that the temperature stabilization time and the periodic influence of the external thermal loads decreases by increasing the spin rate. However, the changes become insignificant for higher values of spin rate. Concerning the PMAS strategy, it was observed that in spite of its extended application to micro and nano satellites, still there are some issues to be solved regarding this strategy. These issues are related to the sizing of its system parameters and predicting the in-orbit performance. The problems were found to be rooted in the difficulties that exist in determining the magnetic characteristics of the ferromagnetic bodies (hysteresis rods) that are applied as damping devices on-board satellites. To address these issues an analytic model for estimating their damping efficiency is proposed and applied to several existing satellites in order to compare the results with their respective in-flight data. This model can explain the behavior showed by these satellites.

Esta tesis estudia el comportamiento de la región exterior de una capa límite turbulenta sin gradientes de presiones. Se ponen a prueba dos teorías relativamente bien establecidas. La teoría de semejanza para la pared supone que en el caso de haber una pared rugosa, el fluido sólo percibe el cambio en la fricción superficial que causa, y otros efectos secundarios quedarán confinados a una zona pegada a la pared. El consenso actual es que dicha teoría es aproximadamente cierta. En el extremo exterior de la capa límite existe una región producida por la interacción entre las estructuras turbulentas y el flujo irrotacional de la corriente libre llamada interfaz turbulenta/no turbulenta. La mayoría de los resultados al respecto sugieren la presencia de fuerzas de cortadura ligeramente más intensa, lo que la hace distinta al resto del flujo turbulento. Las propiedades de esa región probablemente cambien si la velocidad de crecimiento de la capa límite aumenta, algo que puede conseguirse aumentando la fricción en la pared. La rugosidad y la ingestión de masa están entonces relacionadas, y el comportamiento local de la interfaz turbulenta/no turbulenta puede explicar el motivo por el que las capas límite sobre paredes rugosas no se comportan como en el caso de tener paredes lisas precisamente en la zona exterior. Para estudiar las capas límite a números de Reynolds lo suficientemente elevados, se ha desarrollado un nuevo código de alta resolución para la simulación numérica directa de capas límite turbulentas sin gradiente de presión. Dicho código es capaz de simular capas límite en un intervalo de números de Reynolds entre ReT = 100 — 2000 manteniendo una buena escalabilidad hasta los dos millones de hilos en superordenadores de tipo Blue Gene/Q. Se ha guardado especial atención a la generación de condiciones de contorno a la entrada correctas. Los resultados obtenidos están en concordancia con los resultados previos, tanto en el caso de simulaciones como de experimentos. La interfaz turbulenta/no turbulenta de una capa límite se ha analizado usando un valor umbral del módulo de la vorticidad. Dicho umbral se considera un parámetro para analizar cada superficie obtenida de un contorno del módulo de la vorticidad. Se han encontrado dos regímenes distintos en función del umbral escogido con propiedades opuestas, separados por una transición topológica gradual. Las características geométricas de la zona escalan con o99 cuando u^/isdgg es la unidad de vorticidad. Las propiedades del íluido relativas a la posición del contorno de vorticidad han sido analizados para una serie de umbrales utilizando el campo de distancias esféricas, que puede obtenerse con independencia de la complejidad de la superficie de referencia. Las propiedades del fluido a una distancia dada del inerfaz también dependen del umbral de vorticidad, pero tienen características parecidas con independencia del número de Reynolds. La interacción entre la turbulencia y el flujo no turbulento se restringe a una zona muy fina con un espesor del orden de la escala de Kolmogorov local. Hacia el interior del flujo turbulento las propiedades son indistinguibles del resto de la capa límite. Se ha simulado una capa límite sin gradiente de presiones con una fuerza volumétrica cerca de la pared. La el forzado ha sido diseñado para aumentar la fricción en la pared sin introducir ningún efecto geométrico obvio. La simulación consta de dos dominios, un primer dominio más pequeño y a baja resolución que se encarga de generar condiciones de contorno correctas, y un segundo dominio mayor y a alta resolución donde se aplica el forzado. El estudio de los perfiles y los coeficientes de autocorrelación sugieren que los dos casos, el liso y el forzado, no colapsan más allá de la capa logarítmica por la complejidad geométrica de la zona intermitente, y por el hecho que la distancia a la pared no es una longitud característica. Los efectos causados por la geometría de la zona intermitente pueden evitarse utilizando el interfaz como referencia, y la distancia esférica para el análisis de sus propiedades. Las propiedades condicionadas del flujo escalan con 5QQ y u/uT, las dos únicas escalas contenidas en el modelo de semejanza de pared de Townsend, consistente con estos resultados. ABSTRACT This thesis studies the characteristics of the outer region of zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers at moderate Reynolds numbers. Two relatively established theories are put to test. The wall similarity theory states that with the presence of roughness, turbulent motion is mostly affected by the additional drag caused by the roughness, and that other secondary effects are restricted to a region very close to the wall. The consensus is that this theory is valid, but only as a first approximation. At the edge of the boundary layer there is a thin layer caused by the interaction between the turbulent eddies and the irroational fluid of the free stream, called turbulent/non-turbulent interface. The bulk of results about this layer suggest the presence of some localized shear, with properties that make it distinguishable from the rest of the turbulent flow. The properties of the interface are likely to change if the rate of spread of the turbulent boundary layer is amplified, an effect that is usually achieved by increasing the drag. Roughness and entrainment are therefore linked, and the local features of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface may explain the reason why rough-wall boundary layers deviate from the wall similarity theory precisely far from the wall. To study boundary layers at a higher Reynolds number, a new high-resolution code for the direct numerical simulation of a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers over a flat plate has been developed. This code is able to simulate a wide range of Reynolds numbers from ReT =100 to 2000 while showing a linear weak scaling up to around two million threads in the BG/Q architecture. Special attention has been paid to the generation of proper inflow boundary conditions. The results are in good agreement with existing numerical and experimental data sets. The turbulent/non-turbulent interface of a boundary layer is analyzed by thresholding the vorticity magnitude field. The value of the threshold is considered a parameter in the analysis of the surfaces obtained from isocontours of the vorticity magnitude. Two different regimes for the surface can be distinguished depending on the threshold, with a gradual topological transition across which its geometrical properties change significantly. The width of the transition scales well with oQg when u^/udgg is used as a unit of vorticity. The properties of the flow relative to the position of the vorticity magnitude isocontour are analyzed within the same range of thresholds, using the ball distance field, which can be obtained regardless of the size of the domain and complexity of the interface. The properties of the flow at a given distance to the interface also depend on the threshold, but they are similar regardless of the Reynolds number. The interaction between the turbulent and the non-turbulent flow occurs in a thin layer with a thickness that scales with the Kolmogorov length. Deeper into the turbulent side, the properties are undistinguishable from the rest of the turbulent flow. A zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer with a volumetric near-wall forcing has been simulated. The forcing has been designed to increase the wall friction without introducing any obvious geometrical effect. The actual simulation is split in two domains, a smaller one in charge of the generation of correct inflow boundary conditions, and a second and larger one where the forcing is applied. The study of the one-point and twopoint statistics suggest that the forced and the smooth cases do not collapse beyond the logarithmic layer may be caused by the geometrical complexity of the intermittent region, and by the fact that the scaling with the wall-normal coordinate is no longer present. The geometrical effects can be avoided using the turbulent/non-turbulent interface as a reference frame, and the minimum distance respect to it. The conditional analysis of the vorticity field with the alternative reference frame recovers the scaling with 5QQ and v¡uT already present in the logarithmic layer, the only two length-scales allowed if Townsend’s wall similarity hypothesis is valid.

Tide gauge (TG) data along the northern Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts are compared to the sea-surface height (SSH) anomaly obtained from ocean altimetry (TOPEX/Poseidon and ERS-1/2) for a period of nine years (1993–2001). The TG measures the SSH relative to the ground whereas the altimetry does so with respect to the geocentric reference frame; therefore their difference would be in principle a vertical ground motion of the TG sites, though there are different error sources for this estimate as is discussed in the paper. In this study we estimate such vertical ground motion, for each TG site, from the slope of the SSH time series of the (non-seasonal) difference between the TG record and the altimetry measurement at a point closest to the TG. Where possible, these estimates are further compared with those derived from nearby continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) data series. These results on vertical ground motion along the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts provide useful source data for studying, contrasting, and constraining tectonic models of the region. For example, in the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and in the western coast of Greece, a general subsidence is observed which may be related to the Adriatic lithosphere subducting beneath the Eurasian plate along the Dinarides fault.
