Thermal and spectroscopic investigations have been carried out on a number of glasses with a wide range of compositions in the pseudoternary glass system, Li2SO4-Li2O-B2O3, to understand the role of sulfate ions in modifying the borate glass structure. Both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic results indicate that four-coordinate boron atoms are retained in the glass structure to a greater extent in sulfate-containing glasses than in pure lithium borate glasses. There seems to be some evidence for the existence of sulfoborate-type units in Raman spectra in the region of 800-960 cm(-1). These conclusions are supported by the observed behavior of glass transition temperatures and molar volumes. The possibility of formation of sulfoborate-type units is discussed from bonding and thermodynamic points of view.

Systematic ab initio molecular orbital studies of the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra of dipropionamide using the basis sets 6-31g(d) and 6-31++G(d,p) have been carried out. The vibrational spectra of dipropionamide have been satisfactorily interpreted taking into account the agreement between the calculated frequencies, infrared and Raman band intensities and the shifts in the spectra of deuterated molecules with those observed. The previous assignments of most of the vibrational bands are well confirmed, a few bands need reassignment, however. The solvent effects were investigated by self-consistent reaction field theory using dipole and self-consistent isodensity polarized continuum model methods. The introduction of a dielectric medium has only a marginal effect on the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra. However, the calculated changes in geometry and vibrational spectra on going from the gas phase to the solution phase are in accord with the increasing weight of the dipolar resonance structure in polar solvents. Surfactant protein A (SP-A), which is a lung innate immune system component, is known to bind glycolipids present at the cell surface of a mycobacterial pathogen. Lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a component of mycobacterial thick, waxy cell wall, is one of the glycolipid ligands for SP-A. In order to assess binding of synthetic glycolipids with SP-A and the glycosidic linkage preferences for the interaction, beta-arabinofuranoside trisaccharide glycolipids constituted with beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 3) and beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 5) linkages relevant to LAM were synthesized through chemical glycosylations. The efficacies of synthetic glycolipids to interact with SP-A were assessed by using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique, from which association-dissociation rate constants and equilibrium binding constants were derived. The equilibrium binding constants of the interaction of two constitutionally varying beta-arabinofuranoside glycolipids with SP-A were found to be in the millimolar range. A comparison of the results with few alpha-anomeric arabinofuranoside glycolipids showed that glycolipids with beta-anomeric linkages were having relatively lower equilibrium binding constants than those with alpha-anomeric linkages in binding to the protein, whereas oligosaccharides alone, without lipidic chains, exhibited higher equilibrium binding constants. Further, the synthetic compounds inhibited the growth of mycobacteria and affected sliding motilities of the bacteria, although to an extent relatively lesser than that of synthetic compounds constituted with alpha-anomeric linkages.

CaxCu3Ti4O12 (x=0.90, 0.97, 1.0, 1.1 and 1.15) polycrystalline powders with variation in calcium content were prepared via the oxalate precursor route. The structural, morphological and dielectric properties of the ceramics fabricated using these powders were studied using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope along with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and impedance analyzer. The X-ray diffraction patterns obtained for the x = 0.97, 1.0 and 1.1 powdered ceramics could be indexed to a body-centered cubic perovskite related structure associated with the space group Im3. The ESR studies confirmed the absence of oxygen vacancies in the ceramics that were prepared using the oxalate precursor route. The dielectric properties of these suggest that the calcium deficient sample (x = 0.97) has a reduced dielectric loss while retaining the high dielectric constant which is of significant industrial relevance. Experiments have shown strong effects of some substrates on the localized plasmons of metallic nano particles but they are inconclusive on the affecting parameters. Here, we have used discrete dipole approximation in conjunction with Sommerfeld integral relations to explain the effect of the substrates as a function of the parameters of incident radiation. The radiative coupling can both quench and enhance the resonance and its dependence on the angle and polarization of incident radiation with respect to the surface is shown. Non-radiative interaction with the substrate enhances the plasmon resonance of the particles and can shift the resonances from their free-space energies significantly. The non-radiative interaction of the substrate is sensitive to the shape of particles and polarization of incident radiation with respect to substrate. Our results show that the plasmon resonances in coupled and single particles can be significantly altered from their free-space resonances and are quenched or enhanced by the choice of substrate and polarization of incident radiation. Success in the advancement of thermoacoustic field led the researchers to develop the thermoacoustic engines which found its applications in various fields such as refrigeration, gas mixture separation, natural gas liquefaction, and cryogenics. The objective of this study is to design and fabricate the twin thermoacoustic heat engine (TAHE) producing the acoustic waves with high resonance frequencies which is used to drive a thermoacoustic refrigerator efficiently by the influence of geometrical parameters and working fluids. Twin TAHE has gained significant attention due to the production of high intensity acoustic waves than single TAHE. In order to drive an efficient thermoacoustic refrigerator, a twin thermoacoustic heat engine is built up and its performance are analysed by varying the resonator length and working fluid. The performance is measured in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the oscillations generated from twin TAHE. The simulation is performed using free software DeltaEC, from LANL, USA. The simulated DeltaEC results are compared with experimental results and the deviations are found within +10%.

The effect of annealing on structural defects and d(0) ferromagnetism in SnO2 nanoparticles prepared by solution combustion method is investigated. The as-synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles were annealed at 400-800 degrees C for 2 h, in ambient conditions. The crystallinity, size, and morphology of the samples were studied using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies. The annealing results in grain growth due to coarsening as well as reduction in oxygen vacancies as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All the as synthesized and annealed samples exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) with distinct hysteresis loops and the saturation magnetization as high as similar to 0.02 emu/g in as-synthesized samples. However, the saturation magnetization is drastically reduced with increasing annealing temperature. Further the presence of singly charged oxygen vacancies (V-o(-) signal at g-value 1.99) is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance studies, which also diminish with increasing annealing temperature. The observed diminishing RTFM and simultaneous evidences of diminishing O vacancies clearly indicate that RTFM is driven by defects in oxide lattice and confirms primary role of oxygen vacancies in inducing ferromagnetic ordering in metal oxide semiconductors. The study also provides improved fundamental understanding regarding the ambiguity in the origin of intrinsic RTFM in semiconducting metal oxides and projects their technological application in the field of spintronics. Polycrystalline Ni-Zn ferrites with a well-defined composition of Ni0.4Zn0.6Fe2-xSbxO4 synthesized using sol-gel method. Morphological characterizations on the prepared samples were performed by high resolution transmission electron and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The powders were densified using microwave sintering method. The room temperature complex permittivity (epsilon' and epsilon aEuro(3)) and permeability (mu' and mu aEuro(3)) were measured over a wide frequency range from 1 MHz-1.8 GHz. The real part of permittivity varies as `x' concentration increases and the resonance frequency was observed at much higher frequencies and there is a significant decrease in the loss factor (tan delta). The electrical resistivity and permeability of NiZn ferrites increased with an increase of Sb content. As the concentration of `x' increases from 0 to 0.08 the saturation magnetisation decreases. The saturation magnetization (M-s) a parts per thousand aEuro parts per thousand 52.211 A.m(2)/Kg for x = 0 at room temperature. The room temperature electro paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were studied.

Solvent polarity has been known to influence the triplet state structure and reactivity. Here, we present our experimental and theoretical study on the effect of solvent on the lowest triplet excited state structure of 2-chlorothioxanthone (CTX). Time-resolved absorption (TA) spectroscopy has been employed to understand the triplet state electronic structure; whereas solvent-induced structural changes have been studied using time-resolved resonance Raman (TR3) spectroscopy. Both the DFT and TD-DFT calculations have been performed in the solution phase employing self-consistent reaction field implicit solvation model to support the experimental data. It has been observed that CO stretching frequencies of the excited triplet state are sensitive to the solvent polarity and increase with the increase in the solvent polarity. Both TA and TR3 studies reveal that specific solvent effect (H-bonding) is more pronounced in comparison to the nonspecific solvent effect. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a comparative study of the temperature dependent magnetic properties and electron paramagnetic resonance parameters of nano and bulk samples of Bi0.2Sr0.8MnO3 (BSMO). Bulk BSMO is known to have a high T-N similar to 260K and robust charge ordering (T-CO similar to 360 K). We confirm that the bulk sample shows an antiferromagnetic transition around similar to 260K and a spin-glass transition similar to 40 K. For the nano sample, we see a clear ferromagnetic transition at around similar to 120 K. We conclude that spin glass state, which is present due to the co-existence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states in the bulk sample, is suppressed in the nano sample and ferromagnetism is induced instead. The interaction between the Fermi sea of conduction electrons and a nonadiabatic attractive impurity potential can lead to a power-law divergence in the tunneling probability of charge through the impurity. The resulting effect, known as the Fermi edge singularity (FES), constitutes one of the most fundamental many-body phenomena in quantum solid state physics. Here we report the first observation of FES for Dirac fermions in graphene driven by isolated Coulomb impurities in the conduction channel. In high-mobility graphene devices on hexagonal boron nitride substrates, the FES manifests in abrupt changes in conductance with a large magnitude approximate to e(2)/h at resonance, indicating total many-body screening of a local Coulomb impurity with fluctuating charge occupancy. Furthermore, we exploit the extreme sensitivity of graphene to individual Coulomb impurities and demonstrate a new defect-spectroscopy tool to investigate strongly correlated phases in graphene in the quantum Hall regime.

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with average sizes of 14, 9 and 6 nm were synthesised by the chemical co-precipitation technique. Average particle sizes were varied by changing the chitosan surfactant to precursor molar ratio in the reaction mixture. Transmission electron microscopy images revealed a faceted and irregular morphology for the as-synthesised nanoparticles. Magnetic measurements revealed a ferromagnetic nature for the 14 and 9 nm particles and a superparamagnetic nature for the 6 nm particles. An increase in saturation magnetisation with increasing particle size was noted. Relaxivity measurements were carried out to determine T-2 value as a function of particle size using nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The relaxivity coefficient increased with decrease in particle size and decrease in the saturation magnetisation value. The observed trend in the change of relaxivity value with particle size was attributed to the faceted nature of as-synthesised nanoparticles. Faceted morphology results in the creation of high gradient of magnetic field in the regions adjacent to the facet edges increasing the relaxivity value. The effect of edges in increasing the relaxivity value increases with decrease in the particle size because of an increase in the total number of edges per particle dispersion.

Nanocrystalline strontium hexaferrites SrFe12-2x (Ni2+-Zr4+)(x)O-19] nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by sal gel process. For densification the powders were sintered at 950 degrees C/4 h. The sintered samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area measurement, and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The lattice parameter a is almost constant but c increased with x upto 0.8 and then decreased. The frequency dependent complex permittivity (epsilon and epsilon `' and permeability (mu' and mu `') and magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization (M-s), coercive field (H-c) were studied. If is observed that saturation magnetization increased gradually from 57.82 emuig to 67.2 emufg as x increased from 0.2 to 0.4 and then decreased from 672 emufg to 31.63 ernufg for x=1.0. In present study, x=0.4 shows high value of M-s 67.2 emu/g. The real part of permittivity (epsilon') remains constant upto a frequency 1 GHz and increases further with an increase of frequency, a resonance and anti resonance peak was observed above 1 GHz for all the samples. In real part of permeability (mu') the relaxation frequency is observed above 1 GHz for all the samples and it is attributed to the domain wall motion. It is well known that the permeability for polycrystalline ferrites can be described as the superposition of two different magnetizing mechanisms: spin rotation and domain wall motion. These low coercive strontium hexaferrites are suitable for magnetic recording applications in hard disks, floppy disks, video tapes, etc. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

To explore the effect of size reduction to nanoscale on the hole doped Sm0.65Ca0.35MnO3 compound, dc magnetic measurements and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) were done on bulk and nanoparticle samples in the temperature range 10 <= T <= 300 K. Magnetization measurement showed that the bulk sample undergoes a charge ordering transition at 240K and shows a mixed magnetic phase at low temperature. However, the nanosample underwent a ferromagnetic transition at 75 K, and the charge ordered state was destabilized on size reduction down to nanoscale. The low-temperature ferromagnetic component is found to be enhanced in nanoparticles as compared to their bulk counterpart. Interestingly around room temperature, bulk particles show higher magnetization where as at low temperature nanoparticles show higher magnetization. Ferromagnetism in the bulk is due to super exchange where as ferromagnetism in nanoparticles is due to uncompensated spins of the surface layer. Temperature variation of EMR parameters correlates well with the results of magnetic measurements. The magnetic behaviour of the nanoparticles is understood in terms of the core shell scenario. We have employed the highly sensitive electron magnetic resonance technique complimented by magnetization measurements to study the impact of size reduction on the magnetic ordering in nanosized Sm1-x Ca (x) MnO3 (x = 0.35, 0.65 and 0.92). In the bulk form, x = 0.35 sample shows a charge ordering transition at 235 K followed by a mixed magnetic phase, the sample with x = 0.65 exhibits charge order below 275 K and shows an antiferromagnetic insulator phase below 135 K while that with x = 0.92 has a ferromagnetic-cluster glass ground state. Thus, a comparative study of magnetic ground states of bulk and nanoparticles (diameter similar to 25 nm) enables us to investigate size-induced effects on different types of magnetic ordering. It is seen that in the bulk samples the temperature dependences of the EPR parameters are quite different from each other. This difference diminishes for the nanosamples where all the three samples show qualitatively similar behavior. The magnetization measurements corroborate this conclusion.
