The effect of hyperbranched macromolecular architectures (dendrimers) upon chirality has received significant attention in recent years in the light of the proposal of amplification of chirality. In particular, several studies have been carried out on the chiroptical properties of dendrimers that contain a chiral core and achiral branches in order to determine if the chirality of the central core can be transmitted to the distal. region of the macromolecule. In addition to interest of a pure academic nature, the presence of such chiral conformational order would be extremely useful in the development of asymmetric catalysts. In this paper, a novel class of chiral dendrimers is described - these perfect hyperbranched macromolecules have been prepared by a convergent route by the coupling of a chiral central core based upon tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and poly(aromatic amide ester) dendritic branches. The chiral properties of these dendrimers have been investigated by detailed optical rotation studies and circular dichroism analysis; the results of these studies are described herein. This article describes the synthesis and anion binding properties of a series of ‘picket fence’ metalloporphyrin complexes, within which the metal centre is systematically varied. The porphyrin structure contains four amide bonds and is the same for each metal. The anion binding properties of these receptors are further contrasted with those of their tetraphenylporphyrin congeners to elucidate both the effect of the metal centre and the influence of the amide groups on the anion recognition process. Anion binding was demonstrated using UV/visible and 1H NMR spectroscopies, electrochemistry and luminescence. The metal centre was found to be highly influential in the strength and selectivity of binding; for example, the cadmium and mercury complexes exhibited far greater affinities for anions than the zinc complexes in competitive solvents such as DMSO. The amide functionalities were found to enhance the anion binding process.

A series of hydro- and organo-supergelators have been synthesised via coupling of simple bis aromaticureas via alkyl amide linkages. These bis amide-aromatic-ureas exhibited reduced critical gelator concentrations, improved gelator stability, mechanical and dye removal properties for potential use in water purification, in comparison to related bis aromatic-ureas. Systematic structure studies via variation of the bis amide-aromatic-urea linker length as well as functionalization of the terminal aromatic moieties have enabled control over the gel properties.

Monte Carlo simulations of water-amides (amide=fonnamide-FOR, methylfonnamide-NMF and dimethylformamide-DMF) solutions have been carried out in the NpT ensemble at 308 K and 1 atm. The structure and excess enthalpy of the mixtures as a function of the composition have been investigated. The TIP4P model was used for simulating water and six-site models previously optimized in this laboratory were used for simulating the liquid amides. The intermolecular interaction energy was calculated using the classical 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential plus a Coulomb term. The interaction energy between solute and solvent has been partitioned what leads to a better understanding of the behavior of the enthalpy of mixture obtained for the three solutions experimentally. Radial distribution functions for the water-amides correlations permit to explore the intermolecular interactions between the molecules. The results show that three, two and one hydrogen bonds between the water and the amide molecules are formed in the FOR, NMF and DMF-water solutions, respectively. These H-bonds are, respectively, stronger for DMF-water, NMF-water and FOR-water. In the NMF-water solution, the interaction between the methyl group of the NMF and the oxygen of the water plays a role in the stabilization of the aqueous solution quite similar to that of an H-bond in the FOR-water solution. In this work, we investigate Langmuir monolayers froth an amide extracted from dried roots of Ottonia propinqua, a native Brazilian plant believed to exhibit anesthetic and hallucinogen activities. In addition to producing monolayers from the amide itself, we probe the molecular-level action of the amide on phospholipids employed as simple membrane models. The surface pressure-molecular area (pi-A) isotherms for the amide were little affected by a number of subphase conditions. Almost no changes were observed upon varying the compression speed, spreading volume onto the surface, ions in the subphase, ionic strength and the solution solvent. However, stronger effects occurred when the subphase temperature and pH were altered, as the isotherms were shifted to larger areas with increasing temperatures and decreasing pHs. These results are discussed in terms of the molecular packing adopted by the amide at the air-water interface. In the mixed films with arachidic acid, the area per molecule varied linearly with the concentration of amide, probably due to phase separation. on the other hand, in the mixed films with dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC), small amounts of the amide were sufficient to change the pi-A isotherms significantly. This points to a strong molecular-level interaction, probably between the phosphate group in the zwitterion of DPPC and the nitrogen from the amidic group. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The acute toxicity of pellitorine, an amide isolated from Piper tuberculatum (Piperaceae) which is studied as a biopesticide in European corner borer, was evaluated on larvae and newly emerged adults of honeybee Apis mellifera by means of contact and ingestion bioassays. Workers in the larval and adult phase were separated in groups, which received pellitorine in different concentrations. The larvae were maintained in their own original cells, receiving feeding and normal care from the nurses. The adults were confined in wooden cages with screens, receiving artificial diet made up of sugar and water (1:1). The concentrations of 40, 200, 1 000, 5 000 and 25 000 ng a.i./individual were obtained diluting pellitorine in 98% ethanol. LD10 values of 39.14, 36.16 and 13.79 ng a.i./insect were determined for larvae, for adults by ingestion and adults by contact, respectively. The honeybee larvae were shown to be highly susceptible to the amide pellitorine.

Piplartine (PPTN) is an alkaloid amide found in Piper species that presents different activities. PPTN determination in rat plasma is necessary to better understand its biological effects. The aim of this study was to develop a sensitive LC-MS/MS method for the determination of PPTN in rat plasma. The performance criteria for linearity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, recovery, and stability have been assessed and were within the recommended guidelines. The validated method proved to be suitable in a pilot study of PPTN kinetic disposition in rat plasma after a single intraperitoneal dose, and represents an appropriate tool to further pharmacokinetic studies.

The admittance spectra and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics are reported of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) and metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) capacitors employing cross-linked poly(amide-imide) (c-PAI) as the insulator and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the active semiconductor. The capacitance of the MIM devices are constant in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz, with tan delta values as low as 7 x 10(-3) over most of the range. Except at the lowest voltages, the I-V characteristics are well-described by the Schottky equation for thermal emission of electrons from the electrodes into the insulator. The admittance spectra of the MIS devices displayed a classic Maxwell-Wagner frequency response from which the transverse bulk hole mobility was estimated to be similar to 2 x 10(-5) cm(2) V(-1)s(-1) or similar to 5 x 10(-8) cm(2) V(-1)s(-1) depending on whether or not the surface of the insulator had been treated with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) prior to deposition of the P3HT. From the maximum loss observed in admittance-voltage plots, the interface trap density was estimated to be similar to 5 x 10(10) cm(-2) eV(-1) or similar to 9 x 10(10) cm(-2) eV(-1) again depending whether or not the insulator was treated with HMDS. We conclude, therefore, that HMDS plays a useful role in promoting order in the P3HT film as well as reducing the density of interface trap states. Although interposing the P3HT layer between the insulator and the gold electrode degrades the insulating properties of the c-PAI, nevertheless, they remain sufficiently good for use in organic electronic devices.
