For an olfactory sensor or electronic nose, the task is not only to detect the object concentration, but also to recognize it. It is well known that all the elements can be identified by their charge to mass ratio e(+)/m. We tried to imitate this principle for molecular recognition. Two kinds of sensors are used simultaneously in testing. One is quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for detecting the change in mass, the other is interdigital electrode (IE) for detecting the change in conduction, as an electro-mass multi-sensor (EMMS). in this paper, the principle and the feasibility of this method are discussed. The preliminary results on the recognition of alcohol by EMMS coated with lipids are presented. Meanwhile, the multi-sensor can also be used as an instrument for research on some physico-chemistry problems. The change in conduction of coated membrane caused by one absorbed molecule is reported. It is found that when a QCM is coated with membrane, it still obeys the relationship Delta F (frequency change of QCM) = K Delta m (mass change of absorbed substance) and the proportional coefficient, K, depends not only on quartz properties but also on membrane characteristics as well. Three low bandgap conjugated polymers, i.e., PDTPBT-C8, PDTPBT-C6 and PDTPBT-C5, which consist of alternating N-alkyl dithieno[3,2-b: 2',3'-d] pyrrole and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole units and carry 1-octylnonyl, 1-hexylheptyl and 1-pentylhexyl as side chains, respectively, were synthesized. These polymers show strong absorption in the wavelength range of 600-900 nm with enhanced absorption coefficient as the length of alkyl chain decreases. The film morphology of the polymers and 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl) propyl-1-phenyl-[6,6]-C-61 (PCBM) blends is also dependent on the alkyl chain length. As the length decreases, the film becomes more uniform and the domian size decreases from 400-900 nm for PDTPBT-C8 to similar to 50 nm for PDTPBT-C5.

The N,N- bidentate ligands 2- {( N- 2,6- R) iminomethyl)} pyrrole ( HL1, R) dimethylphenyl; HL2, R) diisopropylphenyl) have been prepared. HL1 reacted readily with 1 equiv of lanthanide tris( alkyl)s, Ln(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2), affording lanthanide bis(alkyl) complexes L(1)Ln(CH2SiMe3)(2)(THF)(n) (1a, Ln= Lu, n = 2; 1b, Ln = Sc, n = 1) via alkane elimination. Reaction of the bulky ligand HL2 with 1 equiv of Ln(CH2SiMe3)(3)( THF)(2) gave the bis(pyrrolylaldiminato) lanthanide mono(alkyl) complexes L(2)(2)Ln- (CH2SiMe3)(THF) (2a, Ln) Lu; 2b, Ln = Sc), selectively. The N,N- bidentate ligand HL3, 2- dimethylaminomethylpyrrole, reacted with Ln( CH2SiMe3) 3( THF) 2, generating bimetallic bis( alkyl) complexes of central symmetry ( 3a, Ln = Y; 3b, Ln = Lu; 3c, Ln = Sc). Treatment of the N,N,N,N- tetradentate ligand H2L4, 2,2'-bis(2,2-dimethylpropyldiimino) methylpyrrole, with equimolar Lu(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) afforded a C-2- symmetric binuclear complex ( 4). Complexes 3a, 3b, 3c, and 4 represent rare examples of THF- free binuclear lanthanide bis( alkyl) complexes supported by non- cyclopentadienyl ligands. All complexes have been tested as initiators for the polymerization of isoprene in the presence of AlEt3 and [ Ph3C][B(C6F5)(4)]. Complexes 1a, 1b, and 3a show activity, and 1b is the most active initiator, whereas 2a, 2b, 3b, 3c, and 4 are inert.

The N,N-bidentate ligand 2-{(N-2,6-diisopropylphenyl)iminomethyl)}pyrrole (L-1) and the N,N,P-tridentate ligand 2-{(N-2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)iminomethyl)}pyrrole (L-2) have been prepared. Their reactions with homoleptic yttrium tris(alkyl) compound Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) have been investigated. Treatment of Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) with 1 equiv of L-1 generated a THF-solvated bimetallic (pyrrolylaldiminato)yttrium mono(alkyl) complex (1) of central symmetry. In this process, L-1 is deprotonated by metal alkyl and its imino CN group is reduced to C-N by intramolecular alkylation, generating dianionic species that bridge two yttrium alkyl units in a unique eta(5)/eta(1):kappa(1) mode. The pyrrolyl ring behaves as a heterocyclopentadienyl ligand. Reaction of Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) with 2 equiv of L-1 afforded the monomeric bis(pyrrolylaldiminato)yttrium mono(alkyl) complex (2), selectively. Amination of 2 with 2,6-diisopropylaniline gave the corresponding yttrium amido complex (3). In 3 the pyrrolide ligand is monoanionic and bonds to the yttrium atom in a eta(1):kappa(1) mode. The homoleptic tris(eta(1):kappa(1)-pyrrolylaldiminato)yttrium complex (4) was isolated when the molar ratio of L-1 to Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) increases to 3:1. Reaction of L-2 with equimolar Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) afforded an asymmetric binuclear complex (5).

A series of neutral palladium(II) complexes bearing non-symmetric bidentate pyrrole-iminato or salicylaldiminato chelate ligands have been synthesized, and the structure of representative complexes (3a, 4a, and 5a) have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. These palladium complexes have been investigated as catalysts for the polymerization of norbornene. Using modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes display high activities and produce vinyl-addition polynorborenes. Catalytic activity of up to 8.52 x 10(3) kg/mol(Pd) h has been observed. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) has been used to investigate the polymer microstructure and it has been found that they are non-crystalline.

Novel spherical three-dimensional (3D) dendritic gold-polypyrrole nanocomposites were successfully prepared in the presence of an amphiphilic p-toluene sulfonic acid (TSA) as dopant and surfactant via a self-assembly process which is based on the oxidation of pyrrole (Py) and the reduction of the chloroaurate ions, yielding PPy and Au(0) simultaneously. It was found that the probability of obtaining dendritic Au@PPy/TSA nanostructures depended on the concentration of TSA and the rate of addition of the oxidant (HAuCl4), It was also proposed that the supramolecular micelles formed by Py and TSA play the role of a 'soft template' to produce the dendritic Au@PPy/TSA nanocomposites.

A layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption and polymerization method was developed for the controllable preparation of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles within ultrathin films. By repetitive adsorption of pyrrole and subsequent polymerization with 12-molybdophosphoric acid, the polyelectrolyte multilayer films containing PPy nanoparticles were fabricated. UV-visible absorption spectrocopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammograras (CVs) were used to characterize the PPy nanoparticles and their multilayer thin films. UV-visible spectra indicate that the growth of PPy nanoparticles was regular and occurred within the polyelectrolyte films. The size of prepared PPy nanoparticles was found by TEM to increase with the increasing of polymerization cycles. The electrochemistry behavior of the multilayer thin films was studied in detail on ITO. The results suggest that the LbL adsorption and polymerization method developed herein provides an effective way to prepare PPy nanoparticles in the polymer matrix.

Polypyrrole (Ppy) was successfully introduced into methyl substituted sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes by polymerization in SPEEK solutions to improve their methanol resistance. Uniform polypyrrole (Ppy) distributed composite membranes were formed by this method by the interaction between SPEEK and Ppy. The properties of the composite membranes were characterized in detail. The composite membranes show very good proton conductive capability (25 degrees C: 0.05-0.06s cm(-1)) and good methanol resistance (25 degrees C: 5.3 x 10(-7) 1.1 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1)). The methanol diffusion coefficients of composite membranes are much lower than that of pure SPEEK membranes (1.5 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1)). The composite membranes show very good potential usage in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

A novel polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL)/poly(4-styrene sulfonate sodium) (PSS) modified electrode composed of the coaxial and coplanar working, reference and counter electrodes, was used to electropolymerize the polypyrrole. The PFIL/PSS was modified on the integrated electrode (IE) and connected by the working, reference and counter electrodes, resulting in an available charge transfer and lower Ohmic potential drop between the working and counter electrodes. Then polypyrrole (PPy) film was successfully prepared electrochemically without any participation of supporting electrolytes, only in a pyrrole monomer solution. The resulting PPy film in PFIL/PSS matrix exhibited a preferable electroactivity. Subsequently, influence of the modifications on the formation of PPy was further discussed. The results indicated that the synergetic cooperation of PFIL and PSS components accomplished such a successful electropolymerization of PPy.

Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were carried out to predict the structures and the absorption and emission spectra for porphyrin and a series of carbaporphyrins-carbaporphyrin, adj-dicarbaporphyrin, opp-dicarbaporphyrin, tricarbaporphyrin and tetracarbaporphyrin. The ground- and excited-state geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) and CIS/6-31g(d) level, respectively. The optimized ground-state geometry and absorption spectra of porphyrin, calculated by DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), are comparable with the available experimental values. Based on the optimized excited-state geometries obtained by CIS/6-31g(d) method, the emission properties are calculated using TDDFT method at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. The effects of the substitution of nitrogen atoms with carbon atoms at the center positions of porphyrin are discussed. The results indicate that the two-pyrrole nitrogens are important to the chemical and physical properties for porphyrin.

The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity.
