The presence of contaminants, such as phosphate, in biodiesel, has several drawbacks for instance: current engines perform poorly, fuel tanks deteriorate, catalytic conversion is damaged, and particles emission is increased. Therefore, biodiesel quality control is extremely important for biodiesel acceptance and commercialization worldwide. In this context, a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and another chemically modified electrode with iron hexacyanoferrate (Prussian Blue – PB) were developed for determination of phosphate in biodiesel. The LODs of 6.44 and 1.19 mg kg−1, and LOQs of 21.43 and 3.97 mg kg−1 were obtained for the bare GCE and the PB-modified GCE, respectively. The methodology was employed for analysis of Brazilian biodiesel samples, and it led to satisfactory results, demonstrating its potential application for biodiesel quality control. Additionally, recovery and interference tests were conducted, which revealed that the developed methods are suitable for analysis of phosphate in biodiesel samples.

The electrochromic behavior of iron complexes derived from tetra-2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine (TPPZ) and a hexacyanoferrate species in polyelectrolytic multilayer adsorbed films is described for the first time. This complex macromolecule was deposited onto indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrates via self-assembly, and the morphology of the modified electrodes was studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM), which indicated that the hybrid film containing the polyelectrolyte multilayer and the iron complex was highly homogeneous and was approximately 50 nm thick. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent electrochromic behavior with both intense and persistent coloration as well as a chromatic contrast of approximately 70%. In addition, this system achieved high electrochromic efficiency (over 70 cm(2) C-1 at 630 nm) and a response time that could be measured in milliseconds. The electrode was cycled more than 10(3) times, indicating excellent stability.

A general strategy for electrochemically induced assembly of coordination metallopolymers is demonstrated using the tritopic bridging [Ru-3(mu(3)-O)(CH3COO)(6)(pytpy)(3)](+) cluster complex, where pytpy is the 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine ligand, and iron(III) ions. The concept of such an electrochemically induced coordinative assembly was proven exploring the large difference in the [Fe(pytpy)2 complex formation constants depending on the iron ion oxidation state. Much more stable bridging complexes are formed in the presence of Fe(II) in contrast to Fe(III) ions. The build-up of electrochemically active films on FTO electrodes was confirmed by the growth of the corresponding voltammetric peaks concomitantly with the rise of typical triruthenium cluster and [Fe(pytpy)(2)](2+) complex absorption bands. The metallopolymer was constituted by agglomerates of more or less fused tape like structures, exhibiting large voids and pinholes, as revealed by SEM and AFM images. The adhesion/deposition on FTO was improved by functionalizing the surface with TES-tpy and HOOC-tpy, which increased the surface coverage up to 80%, as estimated by impedance spectroscopy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to monitor the migration of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION)-labeled C6 cells, which were used to induce glioblastoma tumor growth in an animal model, over time using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with the goal of aiding in tumor prognosis and therapy. METHODS: Two groups of male Wistar rats were used for the tumor induction model. In the first group (n=3), the tumors were induced via the injection of SPION-labeled C6 cells. In the second group (n=3), the tumors were induced via the injection of unlabeled C6 cells. Prussian Blue staining was performed to analyze the SPION distribution within the C6 cells in vitro. Tumor-inducing C6 cells were injected into the right frontal cortex, and subsequent tumor monitoring and SPION detection were performed using T2- and T2*-weighted MRI at a 2T field strength. In addition, cancerous tissue was histologically analyzed after performing the MRI studies. RESULTS: The in vitro qualitative evaluation demonstrated adequate distribution and satisfactory cell labeling of the SPIONs. At 14 or 21 days after C6 injection, a SPION-induced T2- and T2*-weighted MRI signal reduction was observed within the lesion located in the left frontal lobe on parasagittal topography. Moreover, histological staining of the tumor tissue with Prussian Blue revealed a broad distribution of SPIONs within the C6 cells. CONCLUSION: MRI analyses exhibit potential for monitoring the tumor growth of C6 cells efficiently labeled with SPIONs.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a powerful oxidant which is commonly used in a wide range of applications in the industrial field. Several methods for the quantification of H2O2 have been developed. Among them, electrochemical methods exploit the ability of some hexacyanoferrates (such as Prussian Blue) to detect H2O2 at potentials close to 0.0 V (vs. SCE) avoiding the occurrence of secondary reactions, which are likely to run at large overpotentials. This electrocatalytic behaviour makes hexacyanoferrates excellent redox mediators. When deposited in the form of thin films on the electrode surfaces, they can be employed in the fabrication of sensors and biosensors, normally operated in solutions at pH values close to physiological ones. As hexacyanoferrates show limited stability in not strongly acidic solutions, it is necessary to improve the configuration of the modified electrodes to increase the stability of the films. In this thesis work, organic conducting polymers were used to fabricate composite films with Prussian Blue (PB) to be electro-deposited on Pt surfaces, in order to increase their pH stability. Different electrode configurations and different methods of synthesis of both components were tested, and for each one the achievement of a possible increase in the operational stability of Prussian Blue was verified. Good results were obtained for the polymer 3,3''-didodecyl-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (poly(3,3''-DDTT)), whose presence created a favourable microenvironment for the electrodeposition of Prussian Blue. The electrochemical behaviour of the modified electrodes was studied in both aqueous and organic solutions. Poly(3,3''-DDTT) showed no response in aqueous solution in the potential range where PB is electroactive, thus in buffered aqueous solution is was possible to characterize the composite material, focusing only on the redox behaviour of PB. A combined effect of anion and cation of the supporting electrolyte was noticed. The response of Pt electrodes modified with films of the PB /poly(3,3''-DDTT) composite was evaluated for the determination of H2O2. The performance of such films was found better than that of the PB alone. It can be concluded that poly(3,3''-DDTT) plays a key role in the stabilization of Prussian Blue causing also a wider linearity range for the electrocatalytic response to H2O2.

Nowadays, rechargeable Li-ion batteries play an important role in portable consumer devices. Formulation of such batteries is improvable by researching new cathodic materials that present higher performances of cyclability and negligible efficiency loss over cycles. Goal of this work was to investigate a new cathodic material, copper nitroprusside, which presents a porous 3D framework. Synthesis was carried out by a low-cost and scalable co-precipitation method. Subsequently, the product was characterized by means of different techniques, such as TGA, XRF, CHN elemental analysis, XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Electrochemical tests were finally performed both in coin cells and by using in situ cells: on one hand, coin cells allowed different formulations to be easily tested, on the other operando cycling led a deeper insight to insertion process and both chemical and physical changes. Results of several tests highlighted a non-reversible electrochemical behavior of the material and a rapid capacity fading over time. Moreover, operando techniques report that amorphisation occurs during the discharge.

PURPOSE To assess ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (USPIO) -enhanced MR imaging for the differentiation of malignant from benign, inflammatory lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, approved by the local animal care committee, VX2 carcinoma and intramuscular abscesses were implanted into the hind thighs of New Zealand White rabbits. MR imaging was performed pre contrast and serially for 24 h after the injection of USPIO. MR findings were compared with histopathologic results based on Prussian blue stains for the presence of iron. RESULTS Twenty-four hours after the Ferumoxtran-injection, no changes were observed in VX2 carcinomas, whereas a mean reduction of the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of approximately 90% was noticed in abscesses as well as in necrotic tumors. On histopathologic examination, abscess and necrotic parts of the tumor were found to include iron-containing monocytes demonstrating that the reduction in CNR was caused by USPIO-tagged monocytes. CONCLUSION Our results prove the ability of USPIO-enhanced MRI to differentiate benign, inflammatory from malignant lesions.

From a biological point of view, casting refers to filling of anatomical and/or pathological spaces with extraneous material that reproduces a three-dimensional replica of the space. Casting may be accompanied by additional procedures such as corrosion, in which the soft tissue is digested out, leaving a clean cast, or the material may be mixed with radiopaque substances to allow x-ray photography or micro computed topography (µCT) scanning. Alternatively, clearing of the surrounding soft tissue increases transparency and allows visualization of the casted cavities. Combination of casting with tissue fixation allows anatomical dissection and didactic surgical procedures on the tissue. Casting materials fall into three categories namely, aqueous substances (India ink, Prussian blue ink), pliable materials (gelatins, latex, and silicone rubber), or hard materials (methyl methacrylates, polyurethanes, polyesters, and epoxy resins). Casting has proved invaluable in both teaching and research and many phenomenal biological processes have been discovered through casting. The choice of a particular material depends inter alia on the targeted use and the intended subsequent investigative procedures, such as dissection, microscopy, or µCT. The casting material needs to be pliable where anatomical and surgical manipulations are intended, and capillary-passable for ultrastructural investigations.

The field of molecule-based magnets is a relatively new branch of chemistry, which involves the design and study of molecular compounds that exhibit a spontaneous magnetic ordering below a critical temperature, Tc. One major goal involves the design of materials with tuneable Tc's for specific applications in memory storage devices. Molecule-based magnets with high magnetic ordering temperatures have recently been obtained from bimetallic and mixed-valence transition metal μ-cyanide complexes of the Prussian blue family. Since the μ-cyanide linkages permit an interaction between paramagnetic metal ions, cyanometalate building blocks have found useful applications in the field of molecule-based magnets. Our work involves the use of octacyanometalate building blocks for the self-assembly of two new classes of magnetic materials namely, high-spin molecular clusters which exhibit both ferromagnetic intra- and intercluster coupling, and specific extended network topologies which show long-range ferromagnetic ordering.

Cyano-bridged mixed-valence compounds have been known for a long time, i.e., Prussian Blue polymeric solids. Nevertheless, the interest in discrete complexes having a well-defined molecular nuclearity has emerged more recently. There are numerous examples of cyano-bridged mixed-valence complexes in the recent literature, as they show promising and useful applications in electrochromism, molecular magnetism and molecular electronics. In this paper, the reactivity, synthetic and structural chemistry, as well as some physical and chemical properties, of a series of discrete dinuclear mixed-valence cyano-bridged complexes of general formulae [LnCoIII(mu NC)Fe-II(CN)(5)](-) (L = pentadentate macrocyclic ligand) are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the synthetic strategy, redox properties and metal-to-metal-charge-transfer (MMCT) band energy. Tuning the MMCT transition energy has been possible by changing the redox potential of the metal centers, both through structural and outer-sphere changes. The redox processes that involve the appearance and disappearance of these MMCT bands in the visible region have been dealt with in relation to the possible uses of the complexes.
