The adipose fin is small, nonpared, and usually located medially between the dorsal and caudal fin. Its taxonomic occurrence is very restrict; thus, it represents an important trace for taxon distinction. As it does not play a known vital physiological roll and it is easily removed, it is commonly used in marking and recapture studies. The present study characterizes the adipose fin of Prochilodus lineatus, as it is poorly explored by the literature. The adipose fin consists basically of a loose connective core, covered by a stratified epithelium supported by collagen fibers. At the epithelium, pigmented cells and alarm substance cells are found. Despite the name, adipocytes or lipid droplets are not observed on the structure of the fin. Microsc. Res. Tech., 2012. (c) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The objective of this study was to obtain information about the possible mechanisms related to poor reproductive performance in tropical rheophilic fish. To that effect, cages (Cs) and earthen ponds (EPs) were used as experimental systems to provide unsuitable and suitable conditions, respectively, for curimbata (Prochilodus lineatus) breeders. Fish were maintained under experimental conditions for 18 months, and during this period females were randomly sampled every two months for biometric analysis (n=30), blood (n=5/sampling) and ovary (n=5/sampling). After this period EPs females (EPFs) and Cs females (CFs) were submitted to the induced breeding experiments. The results showed that rearing curimbata for such long time in a cage at this stocking density, reduces its growth, plasma E2 levels and vitellogenesis. During vitellogenesis, the mean plasma estradiol levels of CFs were three times lower than those of EPFs (P<0.01). CFs presented poorer results than EPFs for all the examined parameters of reproductive performance. Taken together these data showed that the reduced estradiol levels during vitellogenesis (and the consequently less intense transition from the previtellogenic to vitellogenic phase) and reduced amounts of yolk are mechanisms associated with the formation of low quality oocytes and shortened and delayed breeding season in this species. Moreover, our data showed that the onset of vitellogenesis (six months before the spawning season) must be considered as a key period related to the formation of oocytes of good quality, and adequate management should be provided throughout the year.

In this study, we investigated the effects of contaminated water on the blood parameters of the fish Prochilodus lineatus exposed during 7 and 20 days. Blood was collected with heparinized syringes, and blood smears were prepared and stained with Leishman stain. Slides were examined and photographed using a Leica light microscope. Total white blood cell counts and differential counts of thrombocytes and leukocytes were obtained for statistical analysis. The group exposed to water samples from Lago Azul exhibited an increase in the number of leukocytes and in the total number of white blood cells, suggesting that the chemical contaminants in this environment were acting similarly to antigens in this fish species, causing the proliferation of defense cells. In the group exposed to detergent during 20 days, the number of thrombocytes decreased. These results suggest that the variations in the number of leukocytes were indicators of environmental pollution and that biodegradable detergents may, after a certain time of exposure, affect vital functions in fish, such as coagulation and prevention of infections, which directly involves thrombocytes. Insulin resistance is a metabolic disorder in which target cells fail to respond to normal levels of circulating insulin. Insulin resistance has been associated with presence of acanthosis nigricans and acrochordons. It is known that early diagnosis and early initial treatment are of paramount importance to prevent a series of future complications. These dermatoses may represent an easily identifiable sign of insulin resistance and non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between fasting serum insulin levels and Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) (a dermatological condition characterized by hyperpigmentation and thickening of the skin in specific body areas such as the neck and knuckles) and obesity among 6 to 9 year old children. Children were selected at random from a pediatric clinic located on the U.S.-Mexico border. Because none of the children participants had a weight for height at or above the 97th percentile of the CDC growth charts, obesity was defined as weight for height at or above the 95th percentile and at risk of overweight between the 85 th and 95th percentiles of the CDC growth charts. Anthropometrics, blood samples for fasting serum insulin and blood glucose, and a picture of the neck were obtained at baseline (n = 85) and 6 months later (n = 49). None of the children partipating had high fasting serum insulin levels and only 2 children had AN degree 2 (moderately severe). At baseline children with a weight for height at or above the 95th, percentile had 15 units less of insulin than children who weighed less. However, 6 months later this was not confirmed, thus the baseline result is considered to be an anomaly. Eventhough statistical significance was not reached, results showed that children without AN had 5 percentiles lower weight for height than children with AN. The most important recommendation from this study is the need to monitor longitudinal growth in children to characterize the individual child's growth pattern. AN seems to be related to longitudinal growth changes. ^
