The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the Titanium oxide (TiOx, x<2) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied. The results show that the modified electrodes exhibit a significant electrocatalytic activity and good stability for the oxidation of methanol. Under the optimal conditions, the peak current density at 0.58 V for the oxidation of methanol in the positive-going sweep is about 526 mA/cm(2) at the scan rate of 5 mV/s in 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution and the over potential of the methanol oxidation at the modified electrode increases about 30 similar to 40 mV after 70 minutes at the current density of 100 mA/cm(2) and 50 mA/cm(2). The enhanced electrocatalytic activity and good stability are ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the TiOx film and the synergistic effect between Pt microparticles and TiOx.

Effects of the compatibilizer polypropylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate(PP-g-GMA) on the morphology, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene and polycarbonate blends (PP/PC) were studied. It was found that the addition of PP-g-GMA significantly changed their morphology. The mean size of domains reduced from 20 mu m to less than 5 mu m. The dispersed domain size is also strongly dependent upon the content of PP-g-GMA. The interfacial tension of PP/PC/PP-g-GMA (50/30/20) is only about one-tenth of PP/PC (70/30). The crystallization temperature of PP in PP/PC/PP-g-GMA is 5-8 degrees C higher than that of PP in PP/PC blends. Characterization studies based on mechanical properties, differential scanning calorimetry, rheology and morphological evidence obtained by using scanning electron microscopy support the hypothesis that an in-situ copolymer PP-g-PC was formed during the blending process. The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on polypyrrole (PPy) film modified with platinum microparticles has been studied by means of electrochemical and in situ Fourier transform infrared techniques. The Pt microparticles, which were incorporated in the PPy film by the technique of cyclic voltammetry, were uniformly dispersed. The modified electrode exhibits significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methanol. The catalytic activities were found to be dependent on Pt loading and the thickness of the PPy film. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate of electrochemical oxidation of methanol and can be readily oxidized at the modified electrodes. The enhanced electrocatalytic activities may be due to the uniform dispersion of Pt microparticles in the PPy film and the synergistic effects of the highly dispersed Pt microparticles and the PPy film. Finally, a reaction mechanism is suggested.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on polythionine(PTn) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy. The Pt microparticles produced by cyclic voltammetry were highly dispersed in and on the PTn film. The modified electrodes exhibit significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methano and the catalytic activity was found in dependence on the Pt loading. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate in the oxidation of methanol and the abnormal IR spectra for adsorbed CO were observed. On such modified electrodes, adsorbed CO species derived from methanol can be readily oxidized. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity may be ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the PTn film and the synergestic effect between Pt microparticles and the polymer. From the above results, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed.

A compact non-stoichiometric molybdenum (VI, V) oxide of blue film was grown on carbon fiber (CF) microelectrode surface be cycling the potential between + 0.2V and - 0.70V in a freshly prepared Na2MoO4 solution containing 5 x 10(-3) mol/L H2SO4. The quantity-of the oxide is controlled by the charge passing the electrode. The electrochemical pretreatment of CF microelectrode not only mises the deposition velocity of molybdenum oxide on CF surface, but also improves greatly the cyclic voltammetric behavior of the molybdenum oxide film prior to the electrodeposition. The cathodic processes are believed to yield the hydrogen molybdenum oxide bronzes HxMoO3(0 < x < 2), or substoichiometric lower molybdenum oxides with the formula MoO3-y(0 < y < 1). The anodic response results from the reversible oxidation of molybdenum bronze/Mo(V) centers [or perhaps Mo(IV) in more reduced coatings], to Mo(VI). Further information was gained about the chemical composition and valent state of Mo from XPS and SEM.

The effect of a fine powder of Y2O3, Nd2O3, and Ho2O3 on the crystal structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was studied with WAXD and DSC techniques. The results showed that the addition of the three rare earth oxides (REOs) can increase the crystallite size of the alpha-form crystal and the degree of crystallinity of iPP at an annealing temperature of 120 degrees C and that both Y2O3 and Nd2O3 are the beta-nucleator of iPP. REOs enhance the overall growth rate of the spherulites of iPP. All the iPP samples filled with REOs which were crystallized isothermally at 132 degrees C from the melt exhibited their melting peaks of the beta-form on the DSC heating traces, indicating that the REOs are the nucleating agents for both the alpha- and beta-forms of iPP under isothermal conditions. The variation in molecule adsorption mode on pretreated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite electrodes, modified with the title complex K10H3[Dy(SiMo11O39)(2)] by cyclic voltammetry in the title complex solution, was observed in situ by electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy (ECSTM) with molecular resolution in sodium sulphate solution. According to the ECSTM images and the known molecular structure we conclude that the adsorption mode of the title complex modified electrode changed during potential cycling from ''vertical'' to ''inclined'' and then ''horizontal'' or ''flat'' mode, i.e. the title complex adsorbed on the surface of electrode by one ligand of the complex at first, then began to incline and was finally adsorbed by two ligands of the complex. This result indicates that the adsorption mode on the modified electrode surface changed during potential cycling in the sulphate solution and a much more stable molecular layer was formed. The change in adlattice of adsorbates on the modified electrode surface from hexagonal to rectangular was also observed by ECSTM. A plausible model was given to explain this process.

Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) was modified onto the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (hopg) and glassy carbon electrode (gee) surfaces with three methods, respectively. Corresponding image analysis for FAD-modified hopg surfaces has been performed by scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) for the first time. The molecular resolution STM image of FAD adsorbed on the freshly-cleaved hopg was obtained, the quantitative size determination suggests that the FAD molecules adsorb side lying on the substrate surface. The anodization treatment of hopg surface yields many pits, which were clearly observed under STM. These pits provide active sites on the hopg surface for modification and the treated hopg can strongly adsorb FAD molecules, the latter exhibiting an irregular cluster structure on such a surface. When FAD was electrochemically deposited on the substrate surface, a chain structure was successfully observed. The adsorbed FAD on anodized glassy carbon electrode (gee) surface can effectively catalyze the reduction of glucose oxidase, hemoglobin and myoglobin, with a large decrease in the overvoltage, whereas the deposited FAD film exhibits excellent electrocatalysis towards dioxygen reduction.

Electrodes modified with isopolymolybdic acid+polyaniline film, which exhibit high stability and activity in aqueous acidic solution, have been prepared successfully using two methods: one-step synthesis by electrochemical polymerization at a constant applied potential of +0.80 V/SCE or by cycling the potential at 100 mV/s between -0.12 and +0.85 V in 0.5 M H2SO4 containing 5.0x10(-2) M aniline and 5.0x10(-3) M H4Mo8O26, or two-step synthesis by doping the polyaniline film electrode with isopoly acid (IPA) under a cycling potential between -0.20 and +0.40 V in 0.5 M H2SO4 containing the H4Mo8O26 dopant. The thickness of the film and the amount of dopant in the polyaniline film can be controlled by experimental parameters such as the charge, time and the ratio of aniline to IPA in the solution. The experimental results show that electrodes modified with isopolymolybdic acid+polyaniline film using both methods have a strong catalytic effect on the reduction of chlorate anions. Comparison of the two methods of modification shows that the catalytic effect at the modified electrode prepared by the two-step method is greater than that at the electrode prepared by the one-step method.

Surface fluorination of poly (trimethylsilylpropyne) (PTMSP) membranes by CF4 plasma was studied. The surface fluorination of the membranes was carried out in an atmosphere of CF4 in a capacitively coupled discharge apparatus with external electrodes. Dramatic increase in selectivity (P(O2)/P(N2)) was observed. The effect of fluorination conditions such as duration of treatment and discharge power on the permeabilities of the membranes was studied. X-ray photoelectron spectrometric data of modified PTMSP membranes showed a drastic alternation in the surface layer. The P(O2) and P(O2)/P(N2) of the membranes were observed to be dependent on the F/C atomic ratio. At F/C > 1, the P(O2/P(N2) value of the membranes could be more than four.

General equations of the electrocatalytic reaction at an ultramicroelectrode modified with redox species have been described according to the Andrieux Saveant model. The electrocatalytic kinetic process has been discussed for the whole set of cases, ie (R), (R + S), (SR) (SR + E), (E), (R + E), (ER), (S), (ER + S) and (S + E) limiting situations. The effect of gamma on the catalytic steady state current shows that the higher the value of gamma, the lower the catalytic current. The kinetic process shifts rapidly from R to E with increasing values of gamma. It is favorable for catalysis only when gamma is very low. Therefore, the redox species modified ultramicroelectrode with thin film is utilized for electrocatalysis, and the larger the radius of ultramicroelectrode, the higher the catalytic efficiency.
