Zr-Laponite pillared clays were prepared and used as supports of nickel catalysts for the methane reforming reaction with carbon dioxide to synthesis gas. The structural and textural characteristics of supports and catalysts were systematically examined by N-2 adsorption/desorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition were investigated. It is found that Zr-Laponite pillared clays are promising catalyst supports for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The pore structure and surface properties of such supports greatly affect the catalytic behaviors of catalysts derived. Carbon deposition on catalysts was also affected by the property and structure of supports. The sintering of nickel metal and zirconia was another factor responsible for catalyst deactivation. This new-type nickel supported catalyst Ni/Zr-Laponite(8), with well-developed porosity, gave a higher initial conversion and a relatively long-term stability, and is therefore a promising catalyst for potential application to carbon dioxide reforming of methane to synthesis gas. The turbostratic mesoporous carbon blacks were prepared by catalytic chemical vapour decomposition (CCVD) of acetylene using Ni/MgO catalysts prepared by co-precipitation. The relationship between deposition conditions and the nanostructures of resultant carbon black materials was investigated. It was found that the turbostratic and textural structures of carbon blacks are dependent on the deposition temperature and nickel catalyst loading. Higher deposition temperature increases the carbon crystallite unit volume V-nano and reduces the surface area of carbon samples. Moreover, a smaller V-nano is produced by a higher Ni loading at the same deposition temperature. In addition of the pore structure and the active metal surface area of the catalyst, the graphitic degree or electronic conductivity of the carbon support is also a key issue to the activity of the supported catalyst. V-nano is a very useful parameter to describe the effect of the crystalline structure of carbon blacks on the reactivity of carbon blacks in oxygen-carbon reaction and the catalytic activity of carbon-supported catalyst in ammonia decomposition semi-quantitatively. Immunoprecipitation (IP) is one of the most widely used and selective techniques for protein purification. Here, a miniaturised, polymer-supported immunoprecipitation (µIP) method for the on-chip purification of proteins from complex mixtures is described. A 4 µl PDMS column functionalised with covalently bound antibodies was created and all critical aspects of the µIP protocol (antibody immobilisation, blocking of potential non-specific adsorption sites, sample incubation and washing conditions) were assessed and optimised. The optimised µIP method was used to obtain purified fractions of affinity-tagged protein from a bacterial lysate.

This thesis outlines a more environmentally benign approach to diazo transfer, and the investigation of the reactivity of -diazocarbonyl compounds when subjected to transition metal and lanthanide catalysis. Extensive studies were carried out to find the optimum conditions for a greener diazo transfer methodology, and this was also applied to a continuous process for the synthesis of -diazo--ketoesters. The first chapter includes a literature review of the synthesis and subsequent reactivity of -diazocarbonyl compounds. An overview of the applications of flow chemistry for the synthesis of hazardous intermediates is also included. The applications of lanthanide catalysts in organic synthesis is also discussed. The second chapter outlines the extensive studies undertaken to determine the optimum conditions for a greener diazo transfer methodology, including base and solvent studies. Use of water as a viable solvent for diazo transfer was successfully investigated. Diazo transfer to a range of -diazo--ketoesters was achieved using 5 mol% triethylamine or DMAP in water with high conversions. Polystyrene-supported benzenesulfonyl azide as an alternative diazo transfer reagent was also explored, as well as investigations into cheaper generation of this safer reagent. This polymer-supported benzenesulfonyl azide was used with 25 mol% of base in water to achieve successful diazo transfer to a range of -diazo--ketoesters. The third chapter describes the application of the new methodology developed in Chapter 2 to a continuous processing approach. Various excellent conditions were identified for both batch and flow reactions. A series of -diazo--ketoesters were synthesised with excellent conversions using 25 mol% triethylamine in 90:10 acetone water using flow chemistry. Successful diazo transfer was also achieved using a polymer-supported benzenesulfonyl azide in water under flow conditions. The fourth chapter discusses the reactivity of -diazo--ketoesters under transition metal and lanthanide catalysis. This chapter describes the synthesis of a range of -ketoesters via transesterification, which were used to synthesise a range of novel -diazo--ketoesters that were used in subsequent decomposition reactions. A novel route to dioxinones via rhodium(II) catalysis is reported. Attempted OH and SH insertion reactions in the presence of various lanthanide(II) catalysts are outlined, leading to some unexpected and interesting rearrangement products. The experimental details, including spectroscopic and analytical data for all compounds prepared, are reported at the end of each chapter.

In situ polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene with sol-gel-derived mesoporous carbon (MC) leading to a new composite and its subsequent impregnation with Pt nanoparticles for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) is reported. The composite exhibits good dispersion and utilization of platinum nanoparticles akin to other commonly used microporous carbon materials, such as carbon black. Pt-supported MC-poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) composite also exhibits promising electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction, which is central to PEFCs. The PEFC with Pt-loaded MC-PEDOT support exhibits 75% of enhancement in its power density in relation to the PEFC with Pt-loaded pristine MC support while operating under identical conditions. It is conjectured that Pt-supported MC-PEDOT composite ameliorates PEFC performance/durability on repetitive potential cycling. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society. As Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are nearing the acceptable performance level for automotive and stationary applications, the focus on the research is shifting more and more toward enhancing their durability that still remains a major concern in their commercial acceptability. Hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is a promising material for pseudocapacitors due to its high stability, high specific-capacitance and rapid faradaic-reaction. Incorporation of carbon-supported RuO2 (RuO2/C) to platinum (Pt) is found to ameliorate both stability and catalytic activity of fuel cell cathodes that exhibit higher performance and durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of Pt-RuO2/C cathodes is found to be only similar to 8% after 10000 accelerated stress test (AST) cycles as against similar to 60% for Pt/C cathodes after 7000 AST cycles under similar conditions. These data are in conformity with the Electrochemical Surface Area and impedance results. Interestingly, Pt-RuO2/C cathodes can withstand more than 10000 AST cycles with only a nominal loss in their performance. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and cross-sectional field-emission scanning electron microscopy reflect that incorporation of RuO2 to Pt helps mitigating aggregation of Pt particles and improves its stability during long-term operation of PEFCs. Supported nickel catalyst (Ni-Cat) was used as a catalyst to improve the flame retarclancy of intumescent flame-retardants (IFR) systems based on ammonium polyphosphate and pentaerythritol (PETOL) in polypropylene (PP) matrix. Limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 rating, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the flame retardancy and thermal stability of the PP systems, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the microstructure and composition of the chars formed during measuring LOI value and after combustion at 800 degrees C. The catalytic effect of NiCat was shown in an increase of LOI, a change in the char microstructure, and improvement of the thermal stability in the PP systems, which result from the synergistic effect of Ni-Cat and IFR. The results from FE-SEM and FTIR spectra of the char can explain how this synergistic effect happened.

The asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene and the Mukaiyama-aldol reaction between methylpyruvate and 1-phenyl-1-trimethylsilyloxyethene have been catalysed by heterogeneous copper(II)-bis(oxazoline)-based polymer immobilised ionic liquid phase (PIILP) systems generated from a range of linear and cross linked ionic polymers. In both reactions selectivity and ee were strongly influenced by the choice of polymer. A comparison of the performance of a range of Cu(II)-bis(oxazoline)-PIILP catalyst systems against analogous supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) heterogeneous catalysts as well as their homogeneous counterparts has been undertaken and their relative merits evaluated.
