The gamma-phase poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films are usually prepared using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent, regardless of preparation temperature. Here we report the crystallization of both alpha and gamma-phase PVDF films by varying preparation temperature using DMSO solvent. The gamma-phase PVDF films were annealed at 70, 90, 110, 130 and 160 degrees C for five hours. The changes in the phase contents in the PVDF at different annealing conditions have been described. When thin films were annealed at 90 degrees C for 5 h, maximum percentage of beta-phase appears in PVDF thin films. The gamma-phase PVDF films completely converted to alpha-phase when they were annealed at 160 degrees C for 5 h. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman studies, it is confirmed that the PVDF thin films, cast from solution and annealed at 90 degrees C for 5 h, have maximum percentage of beta-phase. The beta-phase PVDF shows a remnant polarization of 4.9 mu C/cm(2) at 1400 kV/cm at 1 Hz.

There exists a minimum in the Waring function, psi(T) = -d(ln p)/d(1/T), and in the Riedel function, alpha(T) = d(ln p)/d(In T), in the liquid-vapor coexistence curve for most fluids. By analyzing National Institute of Standards and Technology data for the molar enthalpy of vaporization and the compressibility variation at the liquid-vapor phase change of 105 fluids, we find that the temperatures of these minima are linearly correlated with the critical temperature, T-c. Using reduced coordinates, we also demonstrate that the minima are well-correlated with the acentric factor. These correlations are used for testing four well-known vapor pressure equations in the Pitzer corresponding states scheme.

A single-step magnetic separation procedure that can remove both organic pollutants and arsenic from contaminated water is clearly a desirable goal. Here we show that water dispersible magnetite nanoparticles prepared by anchoring carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CMCD) cavities to the surface of magnetic nanoparticles are suitable host carriers for such a process. Monodisperse, 10 nm, spherical magnetite, Fe3O4, nanocrystals were prepared by the thermal decomposition of FeOOH. Trace amounts of antiferromagnet, FeO, present in the particles provides an exchange bias field that results in a high superparamagnetic blocking temperature and appreciable magnetization values that facilitate easy separation of the nanocrystals from aqueous dispersions on application of modest magnetic fields. We show here that small molecules like naphthalene and naphthol can be removed from aqueous media by forming inclusion complexes with the anchored cavities of the CMCD-Fe3O4 nanocrystals followed by separation of the nanocrystals by application of a magnetic field. The adsorption properties of the iron oxide surface towards As ions are unaffected by the CMCD capping so it too can be simultaneously removed in the separation process. The CMCD-Fe3O4 nanocrystals provide a versatile platform for magnetic separation with potential applications in water remediation.

We reconsider standard uniaxial fatigue test data obtained from handbooks. Many S-N curve fits to such data represent the median life and exclude load-dependent variance in life. Presently available approaches for incorporating probabilistic aspects explicitly within the S-N curves have some shortcomings, which we discuss. We propose a new linear S-N fit with a prespecified failure probability, load-dependent variance, and reasonable behavior at extreme loads. We fit our parameters using maximum likelihood, show the reasonableness of the fit using Q-Q plots, and obtain standard error estimates via Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed fitting method may be used for obtaining S-N curves from the same data as already available, with the same mathematical form, but in cases in which the failure probability is smaller, say, 10 % instead of 50 %, and in which the fitted line is not parallel to the 50 % (median) line.

For most fluids, there exist a maximum and a minimum in the curvature of the reduced vapor pressure curve, p(r) = p(r)(T-r) (with p(r) = p/p(c) and T-r = T/T-c, p(c) and T-c being the pressure and temperature at the critical point). By analyzing National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) data on the liquid-vapor coexistence curve for 105 fluids, we find that the maximum occurs in the reduced temperature range 0.5 <= T-r <= 0.8 while the minimum occurs in the reduced temperature range 0.980 <= T-r <= 0.995. Vapor pressure equations for which d(2)p(r)/dT(r)(2) diverges at the critical point present a minimum in their curvature. Therefore, the point of minimum curvature can be used as a marker for the critical region. By using the well-known Ambrose-Walton (AW) vapor pressure equation we obtain the reduced temperatures of the maximum and minimum curvature in terms of the Pitzer acentric factor. The AW predictions are checked against those obtained from NIST data. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we present a segmentation algorithm to extract foreground object motion in a moving camera scenario without any preprocessing step such as tracking selected features, video alignment, or foreground segmentation. By viewing it as a curve fitting problem on advected particle trajectories, we use RANSAC to find the polynomial that best fits the camera motion and identify all trajectories that correspond to the camera motion. The remaining trajectories are those due to the foreground motion. By using the superposition principle, we subtract the motion due to camera from foreground trajectories and obtain the true object-induced trajectories. We show that our method performs on par with state-of-the-art technique, with an execution time speed-up of 10x-40x. We compare the results on real-world datasets such as UCF-ARG, UCF Sports and Liris-HARL. We further show that it can be used toper-form video alignment.

The First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) method has been utilised to understand the magnetization reversal and the extent of the irreversible magnetization of the soft CoFe2O4-hard SrFe12O19 nanocomposite in the nonexchange spring and the exchange spring regime. The single peak switching behaviour in the FORC distribution of the exchange spring composite confirms the coherent reversal of the soft and hard phases. The onset of the nucleation field and the magnetization reversal by domain wall movement are also evident from the FORC measurements. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) and its derivatives have prompted a great surge in interest owing to their potential as lead-free piezoelectrics. In spite of five decades since its discovery, there is still a lack of clarity on crucial issues such as the origin of significant dielectric relaxation at room temperature, structural factors influencing its depoling, and the status of the recently proposed monoclinic (Cc) structure vis-a-vis the nanosized structural heterogeneities. In this work, these issues are resolved by comparative analysis of local and global structures on poled and unpoled NBT specimens using electron, x-ray, and neutron diffraction in conjunction with first-principles calculation, dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric measurements. The reported global monoclinic (Cc) distortion is shown not to correspond to the thermodynamic equilibrium state at room temperature. The global monocliniclike appearance rather owes its origin to the presence of local structural and strain heterogeneities. Poling removes the structural inhomogeneities and establishes a long-range rhombohedral distortion. In the process the system gets irreversibly transformed from a nonergodic relaxor to a normal ferroelectric state. The thermal depoling is shown to be associated with the onset of incompatible in-phase tilted octahedral regions in the field-stabilized long range rhombohedral distortion.

The present article describes a working or combined calibration curve in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic analysis, which is the cumulative result of the calibration curves obtained from neutral and singly ionized atomic emission spectral lines. This working calibration curve reduces the effect of change in matrix between different zone soils and certified soil samples because it includes both the species' (neutral and singly ionized) concentration of the element of interest. The limit of detection using a working calibration curve is found better as compared to its constituent calibration curves (i.e., individual calibration curves). The quantitative results obtained using the working calibration curve is in better agreement with the result of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy as compared to the result obtained using its constituent calibration curves.

The Sun has a polar magnetic field which oscillates with the 11 yr sunspot cycle. This polar magnetic field is an important component of the dynamo process which operates in the solar convection zone and produces the sunspot cycle. We have direct systematic measurements of the Sun's polar magnetic field only from about the mid-1970s. There are, however, indirect proxies which give us information about this field at earlier times. The Ca-K spectroheliograms taken at the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory during 1904-2007 have now been digitized with 4k x 4k CCD and have higher resolution (similar to 0.86 arcsec) than the other available historical data sets. From these Ca-K spectroheliograms, we have developed a completely new proxy (polar network index, hereafter PNI) for the Sun's polar magnetic field. We calculate PNI from the digitized images using an automated algorithm and calibrate our measured PNI against the polar field as measured by the Wilcox Solar Observatory for the period 1976-1990. This calibration allows us to estimate the polar fields for the earlier period up to 1904. The dynamo calculations performed with this proxy as input data reproduce reasonably well the Sun's magnetic behavior for the past century.

Aims. In this work we search for the signatures of low-dimensional chaos in the temporal behavior of the Kepler-field blazar W2R 1946+42. Methods. We use a publicly available, similar to 160 000-point-long and mostly equally spaced light curve of W2R 1946+42. We apply the correlation integral method to both real datasets and phase randomized surrogates. Results. We are not able to confirm the presence of low-dimensional chaos in the light curve. This result, however, still leads to some important implications for blazar emission mechanisms, which are discussed.

Studies on the optical properties of InGaN alloy of relatively higher indium content are of potential interest to understand the effect of indium content on the optical band gap of epitaxial InGaN. We report the growth of self assembled non-polar high indium clusters of In0.55Ga0.45N over non-polar (11-20) a-plane In0.17Ga0.83N epilayer grown on a-plane (11-20) GaN/(1-102) r-plane sapphire substrate using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Such structures are potential candidates for high brightness LEDs emitting in longer wavelengths. The high resolution X-ray diffraction studies revealed the formation of two distinct compositions of InxGa1-xN alloys, which were further confirmed by photoluminescence studies. A possible mechanism for the formation of such structure was postulated which was supported with the results obtained by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The structure hence grown when investigated for photo-detecting properties, showed sensitivity to both infrared and ultraviolet radiations due to the different composition of InGaN region. The lattice strain and domain switching behavior of xBiScO(3)-(1-x) PbTiO3 (x = 0.40) was investigated as a function of cyclic field and grain orientation by in situ X-ray diffraction during application of electric fields. The electric field induced 200 lattice strain was measured to be five times larger than the 111 lattice strain in pseudorhombohedral xBiScO(3)-(1-x) PbTiO3 (x = 0.40). It is shown that the anomalous 200 lattice strain is not an intrinsic phenomenon, but arises primarily due to stress associated with the reorientation of the 111 domains in dense polycrystalline ceramic. Nonpolar a-GaN (11-20) epilayers were grown on r-plane (1-102) sapphire substrates using plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy. High resolution x-ray diffractometer confirmed the orientation of the grown film. Effect of the Ga/N ratio on the morphology and strain of a-GaN epilayers was compared and the best condition was obtained for the nitrogen flow of 1 sccm. Atomic force microscopy was used to analyze the surface morphology while the strain in the film was quantitatively measured using Raman spectroscopy and qualitatively analyzed by reciprocal space mapping technique. UV photo response of a-GaN film was measured after fabricating a metal-semiconductor-metal structure over the film with gold metal. The external quantum efficiency of the photodetectors fabricated in the (0002) polar and (11-20) nonpolar growth directions were compared in terms of responsivity and nonpolar GaN showed the best sensitivity at the cost of comparatively slow response time. Four types of the fundamental complex potential in antiplane elasticity are introduced: (a) a point dislocation, (b) a concentrated force, (c) a dislocation doublet and (d) a concentrated force doublet. It is proven that if the axis of the concentrated force doublet is perpendicular to the direction of the dislocation doublet, the relevant complex potentials are equivalent. Using the obtained complex potentials, a singular integral equation for the curve crack problem is introduced. Some particular features of the obtained singular integral equation are discussed, and numerical solutions and examples are given.
