We have prepared a new nanocomposite polymer electrolyte using nanoparticles of hydrotalcite, an anionic clay, as the filler. Hydrotalcite has the chemical composition [M-1-x(2+) M-x(3+) (OH)(2)](x+) [A(x/n)(n-)center dot mH(2)O] where M2+ is a divalent cation (e.g. Mg2+, Ni2+, Co2+,etc.) and M3+ is a trivalent cation (e.g. Al3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, etc.). A(n-) is an anion intercalated between the positively charged double hydroxide layers. The nanoparticles of [Mg0.67Al0.33 (OH)(2)] [(CO3)(0.17)center dot mH(2)O] were prepared by the co-precipitation method (average particle size as observed by TEM similar to 50 nm) and were doped into poly(ethylene glycol) PEG (m.w.2000) complexed with LiCIO4. Samples with different wt.% of hydrotalcite were prepared and characterized using XRD, DSC, TGA, impedance spectroscopy and NMR. Ionic conductivity for the pristine sample, similar to 7.3 x 10(-7) S cm(-1), was enhanced to a maximum of = 1.1 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) for 3.6 wt.% nanoparticle doped sample. We propose that the enhancement of ionic conductivity is caused by percolation effects of the high conductivity paths provided by interfaces between the nanoparticles and the polymer electrolyte. The d.c. conductivity of phosphomolybdate and phosphotungstate glasses is discussed. The conductivity of these glasses is due to the hopping of electrons between two valence states (Mo5+ to Mo6+ or W5+ W6+). In some of the glasses, the activation energy itself is found to be a function of temperature. This appears to be due to thermally activated and variable-range hopping mechanisms operating in different temperature regimes. The relation between conductivity and the [M5+]/[Mtotal](M ≡ Mo, W) ratio does not show any systematic variation. This anomaly can be understood using the structural models of these glasses. In contrast, Mott's theory and the Triberis and Friedman model have been used to obtain conductivity parameters such as the percolation distance Rij and 2agrRij (agr is the tunnelling probability). The conductivity parameter 2agrRij is quite useful to resolve the controversy regarding the tunnelling term exp(2agrRij) existing in the literature. For low values of 2agrRij, it is shown that the exp (2agrRij) term is very significant.

It has been possible to identify two critical compositions in the IV-VI chalcogenide glassy system GexSe100-x by the anomalous variations of the high-pressure electrical resistivity behavior. The first critical composition, the chemical threshold, refers to the stoichiometric composition. The second critical composition, identified recently as the mechanical percolation threshold, is connected with the structural rigidity of the material.

A brief qualitative comparison is made of perovskite ABO sub 3 and layered perovskite ABO sub 3 and layered perovskite A sub 2 BO sub 4 oxides with special emphasis on the influence of geometrical factors on certain physico-chemical properties. The layered perovskite oxides are distinguished from three-dimensional oxides by a looser packing, frustration in three-dimensional interactions, more internal pressure on B--O bonds for small tolerance factors, and by different values of site-percolation thresholds. Their influence on electronic configurations of metal ions, stabilities and syntheses of compounds is discussed. The influence of increased anisotropy in layered oxides on localisation of charge carriers and in suppressing the onset of long-range ferromagnetic ordering is also discussed.

Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC) and electrical switching studies have been undertaken on Ge20Se80-xBix glasses (1 <= x <= 13), to understand the effect of topological thresholds on thermal properties and electrical switching behavior. It is found that the compositional dependence of glass transition temperature (Tg), crystallization temperature (T-c1) and thermal stability (AT) of Ge20Se80-xBix glasses show anomalies at a composition x= 5, the rigidity percolation/stiffness threshold of the system. Further, unusual variations are also observed in different thermal properties, such as T-g, T-c1, Delta T, Delta C-p and Delta H-NR, at the composition x= 10, which indicates the occurrence of chemical threshold in these glasses at this composition. Electrical switching studies indicate that Ge20Se8o_RBig glasses with 5 11 exhibit threshold switching behavior and those with x = 12 and 13 show memory switching. A sharp decrease has been noticed in the switching voltages with bismuth concentration, which is due to the more metallic nature of bismuth and the presence of Bi+ ions. Further, a saturation is seen in the decrease in V-T around x = 6, which is related to bismuth phase percolation at higher concentrations of Bi. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The conductivity of highly doped polypyrrole is less than that of intermediately doped samples, by two orders of magnitude, at 4.2 K. This may be due to more number of bipolarons in highly doped samples. Bipolarons require four times more activation energy than single polarons to hop by thermally induced virtual transitions to intermediate dissociated polaron states than by the nondissociated process. The conduction process in these polyconjugated systems involve ionization from deep trapped states, having a View the MathML source dependence, hopping from localised states, having View the MathML source dependence, and intersite tunnel percolation, having T−1 dependence. The interplay of these factors leads to a better fit by View the MathML source. The mechanism for this exponential behaviour need not be same as that of Motts variable range hopping. Conduction by percolation is possible, if an infinite cluster of chains can be connected by impurity centers created by dopant ions. The tendency for the saturation of conductivity at very low temperatures is due to the possibility of intersite tunnel percolation is disordered polaronic systems.

High pressure electrical resistivity measurements were carried out on GexSe100-x (0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 40) glasses at ambient and low temperatures using the Bridgman anvil system. All the melt quenched glasses show a discontinuous glassy semiconductor to crystalline metal transition at high pressures. The high pressure phases of Ge-Se samples do not correspond to any of the equilibrium phases of the system. Additionally, the variation of transition pressure (P(T)), ambient resistivity (rho0) and the activation energy (DELTAE(t)) with composition, exhibit a change in behaviour at x = 20 and 33. The unusual variations observed in these glasses are discussed in the light of chemical and percolation thresholds occurring in the glassy system.

The local structural order in chalcogenide network glasses is known to change markedly at two critical compositions, namely, the percolation and chemical thresholds. In the AsxTe100-x glassy system, both the thresholds coincide at the composition x = 40 (40 at. % of arsenic). It is demonstrated that the electrical switching fields of As-Te glasses exhibit a distinct change at this composition.

Experiments have repeatedly observed both thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies in aqueous binary mixtures, surprisingly at low solute concentration. Examples of such binary mixtures include water-DMSO, water-ethanol, water-tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), and water-dioxane, to name a few. The anomalies have often been attributed to the onset of a structural transition, whose nature, however, has been left rather unclear. Here we study the origin of such anomalies using large scale computer simulations and theoretical analysis in water-DMSO binary mixture. At very low DMSO concentration (below 10%), small aggregates of DMSO are solvated by water through the formation of DMSO-(H2O)(2) moieties. As the concentration is increased beyond 10-12% of DMSO, spanning clusters comprising the same moieties appear in the system. Those clusters are formed and stabilized not only through H-bonding but also through the association of CH3 groups of DMSO. We attribute the experimentally observed anomalies to a continuum percolation-like transition at DMSO concentration X-DMSO approximate to 12-15%. The largest cluster size of CH3-CH3 aggregation clearly indicates the formation of such percolating clusters. As a result, a significant slowing down is observed in the decay of associated rotational auto time correlation functions (of the S = O bond vector of DMSO and O-H bond vector of water). Markedly unusual behavior in the mean square fluctuation of total dipole moment again suggests a structural transition around the same concentration range. Furthermore, we map our findings to an interacting lattice model which substantiates the continuum percolation model as the reason for low concentration anomalies in binary mixtures where the solutes involved have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties.

Using the multifractal formalism, we discuss the results obtained to characterized the morphology of polymer alloys and granular discontinuous metallic thin films. In the first case we have found a correlation between the multifractality and the mechanical properties of the alloys. In the second case, we have found that it is possible to measure the differences between the morphology of thin films induced by a growth process on a subtrate and that of percolation clusters of the classical theory of percolation.

Ligand-induced conformational changes in proteins are of immense functional relevance. It is a major challenge to elucidate the network of amino acids that are responsible for the percolation of ligand-induced conformational changes to distal regions in the protein from a global perspective. Functionally important subtle conformational changes (at the level of side-chain noncovalent interactions) upon ligand binding or as a result of environmental variations are also elusive in conventional studies such as those using root-mean-square deviations (r.m.s.d.s). In this article, the network representation of protein structures and their analyses provides an efficient tool to capture these variations (both drastic and subtle) in atomistic detail in a global milieu. A generalized graph theoretical metric, using network parameters such as cliques and/or communities, is used to determine similarities or differences between structures in a rigorous manner. The ligand-induced global rewiring in the protein structures is also quantified in terms of network parameters. Thus, a judicious use of graph theory in the context of protein structures can provide meaningful insights into global structural reorganizations upon perturbation and can also be helpful for rigorous structural comparison. Data sets for the present study include high-resolution crystal structures of serine proteases from the S1A family and are probed to quantify the ligand-induced subtle structural variations.

We have synthesized specimens of nanometric lead dispersion in a glassy Al-Cu-V matrix by rapid solidification of the corresponding melt. The microstructure has been designed to avoid superconducting percolation due to coupling of the neighboring particles by the proximity effect. Using these specimens, we have determined quantitatively the effect of size of the ultrafine lead particles on the superconducting transition. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. An approach to the constraint counting theory of glasses is applied to many glass systems which include an oxide, chalcohalide, and chalcogenides. In this, shifting of the percolation threshold due to noncovalent bonding interactions in a basically covalent network and other recent extensions of the theory appear natural. This is particularly insightful and reveals that the chemical threshold signifies another structural transition along with the rigidity percolation threshold, thus unifying these two seemingly disparate toplogical concepts. The recent studies on the switching. behavior of several chalcogenide semiconductors indicate that there exists a close relation between the electrical switching and structural effects in these materials; the two network topological Thresholds, namely the Rigidity Percolation and the Chemical Threshold are found to influence considerably the composition dependence of the switching voltages/fields of many memory and threshold switching glasses. Further, changes in the coordination of constituent atoms are found to effect a change in the switching behavior (memory to threshold), Also, an interesting relation has been established between the type of switching exhibited and the thermal diffusivity of the material.

Nanodispersed lead in metallic and amorphous matrices was synthesized by rapid solidification processing. The optimum microstructure was tailored to avoid percolation of the particles. With these embedded particles it is possible to study quantitatively the effect of size on the superconducting transition temperature by carrying out quantitative microstructural characterization and magnetic measurements. Our results suggest the role of the matrices in enhancement or depression of superconducting transition temperature of lead. The origin of this difference in behavior with respect to different matrices and sizes is discussed.
