In the monograph metalliferous sediments of the East Pacific Rise near 21°S are under consideration. Distribution trends of chemical, mineral and grain size compositions of metalliferous sediments accumulated near the axis of this ultrafast spreading segment of the EPR are shown. On the basis of lithological and geochemical investigations spatial and temporal variations of hydrothermal activity are estimated. Migration rates of hydrothermal fields along the spreading axis are calculated. The model of cyclic hydrothermal process is suggested as a result of tectono-magmatic development of the spreding centre.

Water samples were collected from pre-dawn CTD casts at 5 depths corresponding to 55%, 20%, 7%, 5% and 1% of surface irradiance. 1 litre water samples wrapped with optical filters to replicate light levels. Spiked with 200 µL of 13C labelled sodium bicarbonate. After 24 hourse filtered through ashed 25mm GF/F (Whatman) filters, rinsed with HCl solution (1-2%) and stored at -20oC. On shore encapsulated in tin capsules and analysed for 13C isotopic enrichment. Carbon uptake rates calculated using the equations of Fernandez et al. (2005).

Humidity and wet and dry bulk densities were determined for bottom sediments of the Lena River marginal filter within a 700 km section from the outer boundary of the river delta. Earlier determinations of suspended matter concentration in water, material and grain-size composition and age of sediments were made along the same section. Sediment matter fluxes (accumulation rates), their changes in space and time (about 14 ka) were inferred from measurements of physical parameters. A correlation was found between the physical parameters of bottom sediments and changes in the Lena river marginal filter including those caused by sea-level fluctuations.

Complex geological-geochemical studies of water column and bottom sediments were carried out during Cruise 49 of R/V "Dmitry Mendeleev" in the Kara Sea shelf zone along the Obskaya Guba (Ob River estuary) from the Pur River and Taz River mouths to 76°N. Carbon-14 concentrations in organic matter from bottom sediments were determined at 5 stations. Constant initial 14C concentration model was used to determine sedimentation rates that were taken as a basis for calculating ages of sediment cores and their separate parts and for inferring location of a depocenter, i.e. a region of maximal discharge of fine-dispersed fraction of suspended matter of river run-off. Sedimentation rate in the depocenter is 170 cm/ka. Southward moves of the depocenter were recorded for periods of sea-level rises 2 and 5 thousand years ago. Bottom sediments in the depocenter contain 45% of organic matter primary produced in the Obskaya Guba. This organic matter is an energetic basis for bottom fauna life. About 55% of organic matter comes with river run-off.

Sedimentation rates (SR) for metalliferous and ore sediments containing ore material in 15 depressions of the Red Sea rift zone are discussed. SR for normal sediments was ca. 3.2 cm/ka in the second half of Holocene, 14.3 cm/ka yrs in the first half of Holocene, and 21.3 cm/ka in Late Würmian. Accumulation of metalliferous and ore sediments requires considerable accumulation of hydrothermal matter. Ore sediments have been found primarily in the Atlantis II and Chain Deeps; average sedimentation rate in these depressions is 90.0 cm/ka. In other depressions geothermal activity during considered time intervals was lower, and ore material occurs as admixture or in layers.

Results of radiocarbon dating of 23 cores (81 determinations) collected in the Red Sea rift zone at 8°N are presented. All of the main tectonic structures were dated: the upper and lower tectonic benches, the salt scarp, and the axial zone. Sediments in the upper tectonic bench exhibit normal sedimentation, while all other structures, which have highly dissected relief, show extensive re-deposition or non-accumulation of sediments. Sedimentation rate in Holocene was from two to three times lower than in Late Würm.

Oxygen concentration and rate of change of oxygen were measured using the Unisense Oxygen Microsensor System. Water from different depth was taken from CTD attached niskin bottle. Measurements were conducted in 2 ml vials provided by Unisense and lasted for a minimum of two minutes after a stable rate was achieved. The sampling interval was 6 seconds. Transport containers, tubes and vials for measurements were covered with light proof black foil for dark-measurements. Measurements labeled "unfiltered" were passed through a 200 µm sieve in order to remove potential biases stemming from individual meso-zooplankton. Measurements labeled "filtered" were passed through a 0.8 µm polycarbonate filter placed on top of a wetted GF/F filter.

The metabolic rate of organisms may either be viewed as a basic property from which other vital rates and many ecological patterns emerge and that follows a universal allometric mass scaling law; or it may be considered a property of the organism that emerges as a result of the organism's adaptation to the environment, with consequently less universal mass scaling properties. Data on body mass, maximum ingestion and clearance rates, respiration rates and maximum growth rates of animals living in the ocean epipelagic were compiled from the literature, mainly from original papers but also from previous compilations by other authors. Data were read from tables or digitized from graphs. Only measurements made on individuals of know size, or groups of individuals of similar and known size were included. We show that clearance and respiration rates have life-form-dependent allometries that have similar scaling but different elevations, such that the mass-specific rates converge on a rather narrow size-independent range. In contrast, ingestion and growth rates follow a near-universal taxa-independent ~3/4 mass scaling power law. We argue that the declining mass-specific clearance rates with size within taxa is related to the inherent decrease in feeding efficiency of any particular feeding mode. The transitions between feeding mode and simultaneous transitions in clearance and respiration rates may then represent adaptations to the food environment and be the result of the optimization of tradeoffs that allow sufficient feeding and growth rates to balance mortality.

Radiocarbon datings are used to calculate mean sedimentation rates of metalliferous sediments in the southern arid zone of the Pacific Ocean adjoining the axis of the East Pacific rise (20°S). Owing to low sedimentation rates and intense mixing, only averaged figures could be obtained for ages less than 16 ky. Sedimentation rate varies from 0.3 to about 1 cm/1000 years in the surface layer and is several times higher in the time interval from 20 ky to 45 ky ago. Formulas for calculating mean sedimentation rates with allowance for benthic mixing are presented.
