Ocean Drilling Program Hole 803D (Leg 130) from the western tropical Pacific (Ontong Java Plateau) and Hole 628A (Leg 101) from the western subtropical North Atlantic (Little Bahama Bank) contain rich assemblages of planktonic foraminifers. The uppermost Eocene-basal Miocene section of Hole 803D is apparently complete, whereas the Oligocene section of Hole 628A contains three unconformities based on planktonic foraminiferal evidence. Anomalous ranges are recorded for Chiloguembelina cubensis and Globigerinoides primordius. C. cubensis is found to range throughout the upper Oligocene of both sites, and G. primordius first occurs near the base of upper Oligocene Zone P22 in Hole 628A. Paleomagnetic stratigraphy provides constraints on the last occurrence (LO) of Subbotina angiporoides, the first occurrence (FO) of Globigerina angulisuturalis, the FO of Globigerinoides primordius, the FO of Paragloborotalia pseudokugleri, and the LO of Chiloguembelina cubensis. In general, taxon ranges, total diversity, and the composition of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from Holes 628A and 803D are similar. Differences in the composition of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages between the two sites are interpreted to be primarily the result of enhanced dissolution at Site 803 (e.g., paucity of Globigerina angulisuturalis and absence of G. ciperoensis). However, the greater abundances of Subbotina angiporoides in subtropical Hole 628A and Paragloborotalia opima in tropical Hole 803D are probably related to oceanographic differences between the two low-latitude sites. Comparison between the low and southern high latitudes illustrates some similarities in the composition of Oligocene planktonic foraminiferal assemblages as well as some important differences. Species such as Pseudohastigerina spp., Turborotalia increbescens, "Turborotalia" ampliapertura, Paragloborotalia opima, P. pseudokugleri, P. semivera/mayeri, Globigerinella obesa, Globigerina angulisuturalis, G. gortanii, G. ouachitaensis, G. sellii, G. tapuriensis, G. tripartita, G. pseudovenezuelana, Subbotina? eocaena and S.? yeguaensis are absent or have rare occurrences in the subantarctic Oligocene assemblages. Biogeographic gradients, although not as pronounced as during the late Neogene, were nonetheless significant during the Oligocene.

The oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions of planktic and benthic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils from Middle Oligocene-Early Miocene Equatorial Atlantic sediments (DSDP Site 354) indicate two important paleoceanographic changes, in the Late Oligocene (foraminiferal Zone P.21) and in the Early Miocene (foraminiferal Zone N.5). The first change, reflected by a delta18O increase of 1.45? in Globigerina venezuelana, affected only intermediate pelagic and not surface, deep or bottom waters. The second change affected surface and intermediate waters, whereas deep and bottom waters showed only minor fluctuations. In the case of the former the isotope effect of the moderate ice accumulation on the Antarctic continent is amplified in the Equatorial Atlantic by changes in the circulation pattern. The latter paleoceanographic change, reflected by a significant increase in 18O in both planktic and benthic forms (about 1.0? and 0.5?, respectively), may have been caused by ice volume increase and temperature decrease. Both oxygen- and carbon-isotope compositions indicate a marked depth-habitat stratification for planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. Three different dwelling groups are recognized: shallow Globigerinoides, Globoquadrina dehiscens, Globorotalia mayeri and nannofossils; intermediate Globigerina venezuelana; and deep Catapsydrax dissimilis. The comparison of foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils suggests that the isotopic compositions of nannofossils are generally controlled by the same parameters which control the isotopic composition of shallow-dwelling foraminifera, but the former are more enriched in 18O.

A major deterioration in global climate occurred through the Eocene-Oligocene time interval, characterized by long-term cooling in both terrestrial and marine environments. During this long-term cooling trend, however, recent studies have documented several short-lived warming and cooling phases. In order to further investigate high-latitude climate during these events, we developed a high-resolution calcareous nannofossil record from ODP Site 748 Hole B for the interval spanning the late middle Eocene to the late Oligocene (~42 to 26 Ma). The primary goals of this study were to construct a detailed biostratigraphic record and to use nannofossil assemblage variations to interpret short-term changes in surface-water temperature and nutrient conditions. The principal nannofossil assemblage variations are identified using a temperate-warm-water taxa index (Twwt), from which three warming and five cooling events are identified within the middle Eocene to the earliest Oligocene interval. Among these climatic trends, the cooling event at ~39 Ma (Cooling Event B) is recorded here for the first time. Variations in fine-fraction d18O values at Site 748 are associated with changes in the Twwt index, supporting the idea that significant short-term variability in surface-water conditions occurred in the Kerguelen Plateau area during the middle and late Eocene. Furthermore, ODP Site 748 calcareous nannofossil paleoecology confirms the utility of these microfossils for biostratigraphic, paleoclimatic, and paleoceanographic reconstructions at Southern Ocean sites during the Paleogene.

Two sites in the Labrador Sea and one site in Baffin Bay were drilled during Leg 105. Radiolarians were recovered at all three sites, although at Site 645 (Baffin Bay), radiolarians were present in useful numbers only in the mudline sample. Radiolarians of late Neogene age were recovered at Site 646 south of Greenland, while early Oligocene and early Miocene radiolarians were recovered from the Labrador Sea at Site 647. In Site 646, radiolarian and other coarse-fraction abundances vary dramatically from sample to sample and may reflect deep-water depositional processes as well as changes in surface-water conditions. Site 647 siliceous microfossils reach their peak abundance and preservation in Core 105-647A-25R and decline gradually upward into the lower Miocene (Cores 105-647A-13R and -14R). Siliceous microfossil abundances in counts of the > 38-µm Carbonate-free coarse fraction from the siliceous interval are correlated to each other, but not to the abundance of nonbiogenic coarse-fraction components. Radiolarian abundances in specimens per gram (but not diatom abundances) are correlated to bulk opal concentration and to the organic carbon content of the sediment. The abundance of radiolarians and other siliceous microfossils within the lower Oligocene to lower Miocene is interpreted as reflecting changes in surface-water productivity. With only a few exceptions, no stratigraphic indicator species were seen in samples from either Site 646 or Site 647. The absence of both tropical/subtropical and Norwegian-Greenland Sea stratigraphic forms is due to the dominance of subarctic North Atlantic taxa in Leg 105 assemblages. The early Oligocene and early Miocene assemblages recovered at Site 647 are of particular interest, as very little material of these ages has previously been recovered from the subarctic North Atlantic region, and virtually no descriptive work has been conducted on the more endemic components of the radiolarian assemblages from these time intervals. Thus, this report concentrates on providing, at least in part, the first comprehensive documentation of early Oligocene and early Miocene radiolarians from the subarctic North Atlantic, with emphasis on basic descriptions, measurements, and photographic documentation. However, synonymic work and formal designation of new species names has been deferred until additional material from other regions can be examined. The sole exception is the emendation of Theocalyptra tetracantha Bjorklund and Kellogg 1972 to Cycladophora tetracantha n. comb.

Strontium isotope (87Sr/86Sr) ages have been established for Oligocene samples of Leg 119 Site 744, Leg 120 Sites 747 and 748, and Leg 121 Sites 756 and 757. Ages were determined using the strontium isotope age equation of Miller et al. (1988) and preliminary correlations have been made with available nannofossil biostratigraphy. The strontium isotope ages calculated here augment biostratigraphy, which for the Oligocene is characterized by long biozones, and provide additional detail where the paleomagnetic record is not clear (Sites 756 and 757). Results from the lower latitude Ninetyeast Ridge sites where standard calcareous nannofossil datums are present are compared to those of the higher latitude Kerguelen Plateau sites in order to examine biostratigraphic events across latitude in the Indian Ocean. The 87Sr/86Sr determined ages are used here as a tool for correlation.

This work presents the stratigraphic distribution of several species of calcareous nannofossil in the middle Eocene early-Oligocene from four Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites located between 60° and 65°S paleolatitude in the Southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Useful nannofossil datums that should facilitate construction of age-models and contribute to an integrated chronology for the upper Paleogene Southern Ocean sediments from ~42 to 33 Ma are summarized. The distribution patterns of calcareous nannofossils, studied by means of quantitative and semiquantitative methods, provide an improvement of the classical Southern Ocean biozonations, introducing new biostratigraphically useful biohorizons, and testing their reproducibility within and outside the region.

The Neogene of the southwestern Atlantic is virtually barren of biogenic silica. Of the four sites drilled on Leg 72, only two contained identifiable radiolarian specimens. In the southwestern Brazil Basin (Site 515), radiolarians are present only from the upper Oligocene (Anomaly 8, about 28 Ma) to the middle Miocene (Zone NN8, about 11.5 Ma). On the Rio Grande Rise (Site 516), radiolarians are present only within a short interval of the lower Miocene (Zones N5-N6, about 18-20 Ma). The abrupt cessation of silica deposition in the upper middle Miocene is characteristic of many drill sites in the tropical and temperate Atlantic and implies that a major oceanographic "threshold" was exceeded at this time, allowing the Atlantic waters to become either less productive or relatively silica deficient. Siliceous microfossils are notably more abundant in Oligocene-Miocene sediments of deep regions where carbonate preservation is poor (Site 515) than in equivalent carbonate-rich strata nearby (Site 516). This discrepancy suggests that the presence of calcareous microfossils may act to enhance post-depositional dissolution of biogenic silica tests by elevating the pH of the surrounding pore waters. Carbonate-free clays, by contrast, may provide a more favorable chemical environment for silica preservation.

Using principal component analysis and cyst diversity and equity trends, we can recognize four distinct dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblages from four Rupelian (Early Oligocene) cores in the Mainz Embayment of the northern Rhine Graben (SW Germany). These assemblages are the Spiniferites ramosus (PC1), Thalassiphora pelagica (PC2), Homotryblium tenuispinosum (PC3), and Vozzhennikovia spinula (PC4) assemblages. The four cores provide an onshore-offshore transect in the Mainz Embayment. The H. tenuispinosum assemblage shows high factor loadings in proximal to intermediate cores, which is interpreted to reflect temporary high-salinity conditions. Mean dinocyst diversity and equity increase with distance from the Mid-Rupelian shoreline, indicating increasingly stable paleoenvironmental conditions towards the center of the Mainz Embayment. Within individual cores, changes in dinocyst assemblages through time are related to paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatological changes. The three proximal to intermediate cores show dominance of the H. tenuispinosum assemblage repeatedly alternating with high factor loadings of the T. pelagica assemblage. In both cases, dinocyst diversity and equity tend to be reduced. Highest factor loadings of the S. ramosus assemblage occur in intervals where neither of the above assemblages is dominant and tend to coincide with dinocyst diversity and equity maxima. We interpret this distribution pattern to denote different paleoceanographic conditions, reflecting drier and more humid phases in the Early Oligocene of Central Europe. During relatively dry periods, increased salinity conditions prevailed in proximal to intermediate settings of the Mainz Embayment, as reflected by the dominance of the H. tenuispinosum assemblage. During more humid periods, increased runoff led to higher nutrient availability and the formation of a pycnocline separating slightly less saline surface waters from higher saline deeper waters, thus impeding vertical circulation. These environmental conditions are documented in high loadings of the T. pelagica assemblage which is indicative of increased eutrophication and/or oxygen-depleted bottom waters. Transitions between drier and more humid periods, i.e. episodes of normal marine conditions, are characterized by high loadings predominantly of the S. ramosus assemblage as well as increased dinocyst diversity and equity values. We propose that the alternations between drier and more humid phases may be related to variations in the ocean-atmosphere moisture flux from the North Atlantic into Central Europe bearing a high-latitude climate signal.
