An estimate of rate of transformation of organic matter and regeneration of nutrients (in particular phosphorus) was calculated for different regions of the Sea of Okhotsk. The rate was estimated by means of rate of complete oxidation of organic matter to CO2 and H2O catalyzed by enzymes of the electron transport system (ETS) and rate of hydrolytic splitting of phosphate from organic phosphorus compounds catalyzed by alkaline phosphatase. Organic matter destruction rate was at its maximum on the shelf of Kamchatka and Sakhalin, as well as in the layer of maximum oxygen gradients in deep waters. It was found that zones of intensive primary production were characterized by high rates of phosphorus regeneration, which provided for 80% of primary production when concentration of mineral phosphorus was low.

This data set contains measurements of inorganic phosphorus in samples of soil solution collected in 2003 from the main experiment plots of a large grassland biodiversity experiment (the Jena Experiment; see further details below) that have been aggregated to seasonal values. In the main experiment, 82 grassland plots of 20 x 20 m were established from a pool of 60 species belonging to four functional groups (grasses, legumes, tall and small herbs). In May 2002, varying numbers of plant species from this species pool were sown into the plots to create a gradient of plant species richness (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 60 species) and functional richness (1, 2, 3, 4 functional groups). Plots were maintained by bi-annual weeding and mowing. Glass suction plates with a diameter of 12 cm, 1 cm thickness and a pore size of 1-1.6 µm (UMS GmbH, Munich, Germany) were installed in April 2002 in depths of 10, 20, 30 and 60 cm to collect soil solution. Manual soil matric potential measurements were used to regulate the vacuum system. Manual soil matric potential measurements were used to regulate the vacuum system. The sampling bottles were continuously evacuated to a negative pressure between 50 and 350 mbar, such that the suction pressure was about 50 mbar above the actual soil water tension. Thus, only the soil leachate was collected. Cumulative soil solution was sampled biweekly and analyzed for dissolved inorganic P (PO4P). Here volume-weighted mean values are provided as aggregated seasonal values (spring = March to May, summer = June to August, fall = September to November, winter = December to February) for 2003 in spring, fall, and winter. To calculate these values, the sampled volume of soil solution is used as weight for P concentrations of the respective sampling date. Inorganic phosphorus concentrations in the soil solution were measured photometrically with a continuous flow analyzer (CFA SAN++, Skalar [Breda, The Netherlands]). Ammonium molybdate catalyzed by antimony tartrate reacts in an acidic medium with phosphate and forms a phospho-molybdic acid complex. Ascorbic acid reduces this complex to an intensely blue-colored complex. As the molybdic complex forms under strongly acidic conditions, we could not exclude the hydrolysis of labile organic P compounds in our samples. Furthermore, the molybdate reaction is not sensitive for condensed phosphates. The detection limits of both TDP and PO4P were 0.02 mg P l-1 (CFA, Skalar).

This data set contains measurements of dissolved phosphorus (total dissolved nitrogen: TDP, dissolved inorganic phosphorus: PO4P and dissolved organic phosphorus: DOP) in samples of soil water collected in 2002 from the main experiment plots of a large grassland biodiversity experiment (the Jena Experiment; see further details below). Total dissolved P in soil solution was analyzed by irradiation with UV and oxidation with K2S2O8 followed by reaction with ammonium molybdate (Skalar catnr. 503-553w/r). Dissolved organic P (DOP) in soil solution was calculated as the difference between TDP and PO4P. In a low number of samples, TDP was equal to or smaller than PO4P; in these cases, DOP was assumed to be zero.

In the sediments of the NW African continental margin the mainly biogenic carbonate constituents become increasingly diluted with terrigenous material as one approaches the coast, as indicated by the carbonate-CO2 content, the Al2O3/SiO2-ratios, and the presence of ammonia fixed to alumino-silicates, predominantly to illites. In the norther area of the investigation - off Cape Blanc and Cape Bojador . the terrigenous constituents are mainly quartz from the Sahara Desert, whereas in the south - off Senegal - more alumino-silicates as clay minerals are admixed with the carbonate constituents. The organic carbon content of the continental slope sediments off Senegal is higher than in samples of the continental rise or of the preservation of organic matter as a result of high production and relatively rapid sedimentation. The zone of manganese-oxide enrichment follows the redox potential of + 330 mV from the surface (0-5 cm) into the sediments (20-30 cm deep) at 2000--3000 m and 3700 m of water depths, respectively. At shallower water depths, low redox potentials preclude deposition of manganese oxides and cause their mobilization from the sediments. About 1/3 of the total sedimentary Zn and 1/4 of the Cu is associated with the carbonate mineral fraction, probably in calcium phosphate overgrowths as a result of the mineralization of phosphorus-containing organic matter. Besides the precipitation of calcium phosphate, the mineralization of organic matter mediated by bacterial sulfate reduction also results in calcium carbonate precipitation and the exchange of ammonia for potassium on illites. Because of these simultaneous reactions, the depth distribution of all mineralization constituents in the interstitial water can be determined using the actual molar carbon-to-nitrogen-to phosphorus ratios of the sedimentary organic matter. The amount of sulfide sulfur in this process indicates the predominance of bacterial sulfate reduction in the sediments off NW Africa. This process also preferentially decomposes nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing organic compounds so organic matter deficient in these elements is characteristic for the rapidly accumulating sediments than today, indicating there was increased production of organic carbon compounds and more favorable conditions of their preservations. During the last interglacial times conditions were similar to those to today. This differentiation with time has also been observed in sediments from the Argentine Basin and from slope off South India indicating perhaps world-wide environmental changes throughout Late Quaternary times.

Carbon dioxide, ammonia, and reactive phosphate in the interstitial water of three sediment cores of the West African continental margin result from oxidation of sedimentary organic matter by bacterial sulfate reduction. The proposed model is a modification of one initially suggested by Richards (1965) for processes in anoxic waters: (CH2O)106 (NH3)8 (H3PO4) (0.7-0.2) + 53 SO4**2- =106 CO2 + 106 H20 + 8 NH3 + (0.7 - 0.2) H3PO4 + 53 S**2- The amount of reduced interstitial sulfate, the carbon-to-nitrogen-to-phosphorus atomic ratio of the sedimentary organic matter, as well as small amounts of carbon dioxide, which precipitated as interstitial calcium carbonate, are included in the general oxidation-reduction reaction. Preferential loss of nitrogen and phosphorus from organic matter close to the surface was recorded in both the interstitial water and sediment composition. It appeared that in deeper sections of the core organic carbon compounds were oxidized which were probably in an even lower oxidation state than that indicated by the proposed model. An estimated 2 % of the amount of organic matter still present was oxidized after it became incorporated into the sediment; whereas sulfide sulfur contents indicate that a much larger percentage (15-20%) seemed to have been subject to bacterial oxidation during the Pleistocene period, when a very thin oxidizing layer on the sediment allowed the above decomposition process to start relatively early favoured by almost fresh organic matter, and by almost unrestricted exchange of sulfate with the overlying water.

Enhanced biodegradation of organic xenobiotic compounds in the rhizosphere is frequently recorded although the specific mechanisms are poorly understood. We have shown that the mineralization of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is enhanced in soil collected from the rhizosphere of Trifolium pratense[e.g. maximum mineralization rate = 7.9 days(-1) and time at maximum rate (t(1)) = 16.7 days for 12-day-old T. pratense soil in comparison with 4.7 days(-1) and 25.4 days, respectively, for non-planted controls). The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the plant-microbe interactions involved in rhizosphere-enhanced biodegradation by narrowing down the identity of the T. pratense rhizodeposit responsible for stimulating the microbial mineralization of 2,4-D. Specifically, we investigated the distribution of the stimulatory component(s) among rhizodeposit fractions (exudates or root debris) and the influence of soil properties and plant species on its production. Production of the stimulatory rhizodeposit was dependent on soil pH (e.g. t(1) for roots grown at pH 6.5 was significantly lower than for those grown at pH 4.4) but independent of soil inorganic N concentration. Most strikingly, the stimulatory rhizodeposit was only produced by T. pratense grown in non-sterile soil and was present in both exudates and root debris. Comparison of the effect of root debris from plant species (three each) from the classes monocotyledon, dicotyledon (non-legume) and dicotyledon (legume) revealed that legumes had by far the greatest positive impact on 2,4-D mineralization kinetics. We discuss the significance of these findings with respect to legume-rhizobia interactions in the rhizosphere.

Chemical analysis of a solid phase fermentation of an Australian Penicillium citrinum strain has returned all known examples of a rare class of N-methyl quinolone lactams, quinolactacins A2 (1), B2 (2), C2 (3) and Al (4), together with the new quinolactacins B1 (5), C1 (6), D1 (7) and D2 (8), and the novel derivatives quinolonimide (9) and quinolonic acid (10). Complete stereostructures were assigned to all these compounds by detailed spectroscopic analysis and chemical interconversion. Carefully controlled and monitored decomposition studies have confirmed that quinolactacins readily undergo C-3 epimerization and oxidation, and under appropriate conditions convert to quinolonimide and quinolonic acid. Mechanisms for key transformations are proposed. The decomposition studies suggested that only quinolactacins A2 (1) and B2 (2) are genuine natural products, with all other isolated compounds being decomposition artefacts. Quinolactacins C1 (6), C2 (3), and the racemic mixture of quinolactacins D1/D2 (8/7) all displayed notable cytotoxic activity.

Cellular delivery involving the transfer of various drugs and bio-active molecules (peptides, proteins and DNAs, etc.) through the cell membrane into cells has attracted increasing attention because of its importance in medicine and drug delivery. This topic has been extensively reviewed. The direct delivery of drugs and biomolecules, however, is generally inefficient and suffering from problems such as enzymic degradation of DNAs. Therefore, searching for efficient and safe transport vehicles (carriers) to delivery genes or drugs into cells has been challenging yet exciting area of research. In past decades, many carriers have been developed and investigated extensively which can be generally classified into four major groups: viral carriers, organic cationic compounds, recombinant protiens and inorganic nanoparticles. Many inorganic materials, such as calcium phosphate, gold, carbon materials, silicon oxide, iron oxide and layered double hydroxide (LDH), have been studied. Inorganic nanoparticles show low toxicity and promise for controlled delivery properties, thus presenting a new alternative to viral carriers and cationic carriers. Inorganic nanoparticles generally possess versatile properties suitable for cellular delivery, including wide availability, rich functionality, good biocompatibility, potential capability of targeted delivery (e.g. selectively destroying cancer cells but sparing normal tissues) and controlled release of carried drugs. This paper reviews the latest advances in inorganic nanoparticle applications as cellular delivery carriers and highlights some key issues in efficient cellular delivery using inorganic nanoparticles. Critical proper-ties of inorganic nanoparticles, surface functionalisation (modification), uptake of biomolecules, the driving forces for delivery, and release of biomolecules will be reviewed systematically. Selected examples of promising inorganic nanoparticle delivery systems, including gold, fullerences and carbon nanotubes, LDH and various oxide nanoparticles in particular their applications for gene delivery will be discussed. The fundamental understanding of properties of inorganic nanoparticles in relation to cellular delivery efficiency as the most paramount issue will be highlighted. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Arenesulfonic-acid functionalized SBA-15 materials have been used in the production of biodiesel from low grade oleaginous feedstock. These materials display an outstanding catalytic activity, being able to promote the transformation of crude palm oil with methanol into fatty acid methyl esters with high yield (85%) under mild reaction conditions. However, high sensitivity of the catalyst against poisoning by different substances has also been detected. Thus, alkaline metal cations, such as sodium or potassium exert a negative influence on the catalytic activity of these materials, being necessary amounts around 500 ppm of sodium in the reaction media to decrease the catalytic activity of these materials to a half of its initial value in just two reaction runs. The deactivation of arenesulfonic acid functionalized SBA-15 materials seems to occur in this case by ion exchange of the acid protons at the sulfonic groups. Organic unsaponifiable compounds like lecithin or retinol also induce a negative influence in the catalytic activity of these sulfonic acid-based materials, though not so intense as in the case of alkaline metals. The deactivating mechanism associated to the influence of the organic compounds seems to be linked to the adsorption of such substances onto the catalytic acid sites as well as on the silica surface. The accumulation of lecithin in the surface of catalyst, observed by means of thermogravimetric analysis, suggest the creation of a strong interaction, probably by ion pair, between this compound and the sulfonic acid group.

The fulgide and fulgimide family constitutes an important class of organic photochromic compounds. The ability of fulgides and fulgimides to interconvert between two key forms by irradiation of different wavelength of light has made them promising material in optical memory devices, optical switches and sensors, and specialty dyes and inks. Thermal stability and hydrolytic stability of fulgides and fulgimides are essential for their practical applications. A deuterated trifluoromethyl indolylfulgide was synthesized based on the synthetic pathway of the proteo trifluoromethyl indolylfulgide using commercially available deuterated starting materials. Deuteration of the isopropylidene group improved the thermal stability of the indolylfulgide by a factor of 7. ^ Fulgimides are the most important fulgide derivatives. Fulgimides improve the hydrolytic stability of fulgides by replacing the succinic anhydride ring with a succinimide ring. A novel trifluoromethyl N-ethoxycarbonylmethyl indolylfulgimide was synthesized from trifluoromethyl indolylfulgide. The trifluoromethyl indolylfulgide was synthesized on a large scale in five steps with an overall yield of 18%. The indolylfulgide was then converted to indolylfulgimide by aminolysis follow by dehydration. The N-ethoxycarbonylmethyl indolylfulgimide showed enhanced hydrolytic stability and photochemical stability in 70/30 ethanol/water. ^ Three novel aqueous soluble fulgimides, trifluoromethyl carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide, dicarboxylic acid indolylfulgimide, and H-carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide, were synthesized. In sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) at 37 ºC, an unusual hydrolysis of the trifluoromethyl group of the closed form of the carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide resulted in the dicarboxylic acid indolylfulgimide which has an additional carboxylic acid group. The closed form of dicarboxylic acid indolylfulgimide was further decarboxylated to generate H-carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide which was not photochromic. The trifluoromethyl dicarboxylic acid indolylfulgimide is the most robust fulgimide yet reported in aqueous solution. ^ A novel aqueous soluble methyl carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide was synthesized from methyl indolylfulgide. The methyl indolylfulgide was synthesized in five steps with an overall yield of 21%. The methyl carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide was synthesized by aminolysis follow by dehydration. The methyl carboxylic acid indolylfulgimide is expected to have improved thermal and photochemical stability in aqueous solutions relative to the trifluoromethyl analog.^

A stable isotope (13C)-labeling experiment was performed to quantify the importance of bacterial carbon as a food source for an Arctic deep-sea nematode community. Bacterial functional groups were isotopically enriched with 13C-glucose, 13C-acetate, 13C- bicarbonate, and 13C-amino acids injected into sediments collected from 1280 m depth at 79uN, 6uE, west of Svalbard. Incorporation of the 13C label into bacterial phospholipid-derived fatty acids (PLFAs) and nematodes in the top 5 cm of the sediment was monitored over a 7-d period. The 13C dynamics of nematodes was fitted with a simple isotope turnover model to derive the importance of the different bacterial functional groups as carbon sources for the nematodes. The different substrates clearly labeled different bacterial groups as evidenced by differential labeling of the PLFA patterns. The deep-sea nematode community incorporated a very limited amount of the label, and the isotope turnover model showed that the dynamics of the isotope transfer could not be attributed to bacterivory. The low enrichment of nematodes suggests a limited passive uptake of injected 13C-labeled substrates. The lack of accumulation suggests that the injected 13C-labeled dissolved organic carbon compounds are not important as carbon sources for deep-sea nematodes. Since earlier studies with isotopically enriched algae also found limited uptake by nematodes, the food sources of deep-sea nematodes remain unclear.

Geochemical studies of organic "biomarker" compounds were applied to Eemian sediments cored at Dagebuell (DA-1) on the west coast, and at Krummland (KR-1) in the east of the Baltic Zone of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. 10 samples from the early stage of the Eemian Transgression to the high Eem at Krummland, and 24 samples from the peak and late phases of the Eemian at Dagebuell provide new insights on the development of the Eemian Sea in the region. C37-C39-ethyl- and methyl-ketones in the Krummland sediments indicated unstable conditions at the onset of the marine trangression, and freshwater influence in keeping with their shallow nearshore environment. In the Dagebuell deposits, patterns typical of marine to brackish conditions were observed, comparable to those found today in the Skagerrak and Belt Sea areas. The sea-surface temperatures estimated from the alkenone unsaturation ratio UK37 at DA-1 corroborate the evidence from "standard" faunal and pollen assemblages, and lithological successions. Here, the temperature maximum attained in pollen assemblage zone PAZ Illc, indicates the early onset of very warm conditions, preceding the highest sea level of the penultimate interglacial by 8,000 years, based on previously published U/Th ages.

Solution-processed hybrid organic–inorganic lead halide perovskites are emerging as one of the most promising candidates for low-cost light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, due to a small exciton binding energy, it is not yet possible to achieve an efficient electroluminescence within the blue wavelength region at room temperature, as is necessary for full-spectrum light sources. Here, we demonstrate efficient blue LEDs based on the colloidal, quantum-confined 2D perovskites, with precisely controlled stacking down to one-unit-cell thickness (n = 1). A variety of low-k organic host compounds are used to disperse the 2D perovskites, effectively creating a matrix of the dielectric quantum wells, which significantly boosts the exciton binding energy by the dielectric confinement effect. Through the Förster resonance energy transfer, the excitons down-convert and recombine radiatively in the 2D perovskites. We report room-temperature pure green (n = 7–10), sky blue (n = 5), pure blue (n = 3), and deep blue (n = 1) electroluminescence, with record-high external quantum efficiencies in the green-to-blue wavelength region.
