Among people living in rural areas of Shouguang City, Shandong, China, 88% of deaths were caused by chronic non-communicable diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and cancers accounted for 97% of all chronic disease causes and 85% of all causes of death. The proportion of chronic causes increased by 27% from 1993 to 2000. However, the mortality of respiratory diseases showed a decreasing trend over time. This paper uses innovative content analysis techniques to map how the death of Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was framed on Twitter conversations. Around 1.5 million posts from a two-week timeframe are analyzed with a combination of syntactic and semantic methods. This analysis is grounded in the frame analysis perspective and is different than sentiment analysis. Instead of looking for explicit evaluations, such as “he is guilty” or “he is innocent”, we showcase through the results how opinions can be identified by complex articulations of more implicit symbolic devices such as examples and metaphors repeatedly mentioned. Different frames are adopted by users as more information about the case is revealed: from a more episodic one, highly used in the very beginning, to more systemic approaches, highlighting the association of the event with urban violence, gun control issues, and violence against women. It has been called “the world’s worst recorded natural disaster,” and “the largest earthquake in 40 years,” galvanizing the largest global relief effort in history. For those of us involved in the discipline and/or the practice of communications, we realized that it presented a unique case study from a number of perspectives. Both the media and the public became so enraptured and enmeshed in the story of the tsunami of December 26, 2004, bringing to the fore a piece of geography and a peoples too rarely considered prior to the tragedy, that we felt compelled to examine the phenomenon. The overwhelming significance of this volume comes from its being a combination of both academic scholars and development practitioners in the field. Its poignancy becomes underscored from their wide-ranging perspectives, with 21 chapters representing some 14 different countries. Their realities provide not only credibility but also an unprecedented sensitivity to communication issues. Our approach here considers Tsunami 2004 from five communication perspectives: 1.) Interpersonal/ intercultural, 2.) Mass media, 3.) Telecommunications, 4.) Ethics, philanthropy, and development communication, and; 5.) Personal testimonies and observations. You will learn even more here about the theory and practice of disaster/crisis communication.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have premature mortality. Contrary to the general population, mortality in RA has not declined over time. This study aimed to evaluate determinants of mortality in RA by examining causes of death (CoDs) over time, accuracy of CoD diagnoses, and contribution of RA medication to CoDs. This study further evaluated detection rate of reactive systemic amyloid A amyloidosis, which is an important contributor to RA mortality. CoDs were examined in 960 RA patients between 1971 and 1991 (Study population A) and in 369 RA patients autopsied from 1952 to 1991, with non-RA patients serving as the reference cases (Study population B). In Study population B, CoDs by the clinician before autopsy were compared to those by the pathologist at autopsy to study accuracy of CoD diagnoses. In Study population B, autopsy tissue samples were re-examined systematically for amyloidosis (90% of patients) and clinical data for RA patients was studied from 1973. RA patients died most frequently of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), infections, and RA. RA deaths declined over time. Coronary deaths showed no major change in Study population A, but, in Study population B, coronary deaths in RA patients increased from 1952 to 1991, while non-RA cases had a decrease in coronary deaths starting in the 1970s. Between CoD diagnoses by the clinician and those by the pathologist, RA patients had lower agreement than non-RA cases regarding cardiovascular (Kappa reliability measure: 0.31 vs. 0.51) and coronary deaths (0.33 vs. 0.46). Use of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs was not associated with any CoD. In RA patients, re-examination of autopsy tissue samples doubled the prevalence of amyloid compared with the original autopsy: from 18% to 30%. In the amyloid-positive RA patients, amyloidosis was diagnosed before autopsy in only 37%; and they had higher inflammatory levels and longer duration of RA than amyloid-negative RA patients. Of the RA patients with amyloid, only half had renal failure or proteinuria during lifetime. In RA, most important determinants of mortality were CVDs, RA, and infections. In RA patients, RA deaths decreased over time, but this was not true for coronary deaths. Coronary death being less accurately diagnosed in RA may indicate that coronary heart disease (CHD) often goes unrecognized during lifetime. Thus, active search for CHD and its effective treatment is important to reduce cardiovascular mortality. Reactive amyloidosis may often go undetected. In RA patients with proteinuria or renal failure, as well as with active and long-lasting RA, a systematic search for amyloid is important to enable early diagnosis and early enhancement of therapy. This is essential to prevent clinical manifestations of amyloidosis such as renal failure, which has a poor prognosis.

An array of identical maps with Ising symmetry, with both positive and negative couplings, is studied. We divide the maps into two groups, with positive intra-group couplings and negative inter-group couplings. This leads to antisynchronization between the two groups which have the same stability properties as the synchronized state. Introducing a certain degree of randomness in signs of these couplings destabilizes the anti-synchronized state. Further increasing the randomness in signs of these couplings leads to oscillator death. This is essentially a frustration induced phenomenon. We explain the observed results using the theory of random matrices with nonzero mean. We briefly discuss applications to coupled differential equations. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

A rain forest dusk chorus consists of a large number of individuals of acoustically communicating species signaling at the same time. How different species achieve effective intra-specific communication in this complex and noisy acoustic environment is not well understood. In this study we examined acoustic masking interference in an assemblage of rain forest crickets and katydids. We used signal structures and spacing of signalers to estimate temporal, spectral and active space overlap between species. We then examined these overlaps for evidence of strategies of masking avoidance in the assemblage: we asked whether species whose signals have high temporal or spectral overlap avoid calling together. Whereas we found evidence that species with high temporal overlap may avoid calling together, there was no relation between spectral overlap and calling activity. There was also no correlation between the spectral and temporal overlaps of the signals of different species. In addition, we found little evidence that species calling in the understorey actively use spacing to minimize acoustic overlap. Increasing call intensity and tuning receivers however emerged as powerful strategies to minimize acoustic overlap. Effective acoustic overlaps were on average close to zero for most individuals in natural, multispecies choruses, even in the absence of behavioral avoidance mechanisms such as inhibition of calling or active spacing. Thus, call temporal structure, intensity and frequency together provide sufficient parameter space for several species to call together yet communicate effectively with little interference in the apparent cacophony of a rain forest dusk chorus.
