Ultrathin films at fluid interfaces are important not only from a fundamental point of view as 2D complex fluids but have also become increasingly relevant in the development of novel functional materials. There has been an explosion in the synthesis work in this area over the last decade, giving rise to many exotic nanostructures at fluid interfaces. However, the factors controlling particle nucleation, growth and self-assembly at interfaces are poorly understood on a quantitative level. We will outline some of the recent attempts in this direction. Some of the selected investigations examining the macroscopic mechanical properties of molecular and particulate films at fluid interfaces will be reviewed. We conclude with a discussion of the electronic properties of these films that have potential technological and biological applications.

Particle number concentrations vary significantly with environment and, in this study, we attempt to assess the significance of these differences. Towards this aim, we reviewed 85 papers that have reported particle number concentrations levels at 126 sites covering different environments. We grouped the results into eight categories according to measurement location including: road tunnel, on-road, road-side, street canyon, urban, urban background, rural, and clean background. From these reports, the overall median number concentration for each of the eight site categories was calculated. The eight location categories may be classified into four distinct groups. The mean median particle number locations for these four types were found to be statistically different from each other. Rural and clean background sites had the lowest concentrations of about 3x103 cm-3. Urban and urban background sites showed concentrations that were three times higher (9x103 cm-3). The mean concentration for the street canyon, roadside and on-road measurement sites was 4.6x104 cm-3, while the highest concentrations were observed in the road tunnels (8.6x104 cm-3). This variation is important when assessing human exposure-response for which there is very little data available, making it difficult to develop health guidelines, a basis for national regulations. Our analyses shows that the current levels in environments affected by vehicle emissions are 3 to 28 times higher than in the natural environments. At present, there is no threshold level in response to exposure to ultrafine particles. Therefore, future control and management strategies should target a decrease of these particles in urban environments by more than one order of magnitude to bring them down to the natural background. At present there is a long way to go to achieve this.

The role of different chemical compounds, particularly organics, involved in the new particle formation (NPF) and its consequent growth are not fully understood. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the chemistry of aerosol particles during NPF events in an urban subtropical environment. Aerosol chemical composition was measured along with particle number size distribution (PNSD) and several other air quality parameters at five sites across an urban subtropical environment. An Aerodyne compact Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (c-TOF-AMS) and a TSI Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) measured aerosol chemical composition and PNSD, respectively. Five NPF events, with growth rates in the range 3.3-4.6 nm, were detected at two sites. The NPF events happened on relatively warmer days with lower humidity and higher solar radiation. Temporal percent fractions of nitrate, sulphate, ammonium and organics were modelled using the Generalised Additive Model (GAM), with a basis of penalised spline. Percent fractions of organics increased after the NPF events, while the mass fraction of ammonium and sulphate decreased. This uncovered the important role of organics in the growth of newly formed particles. Three organic markers, factors f43, f44 and f57, were calculated and the f44 vs f43 trends were compared between nucleation and non-nucleation days. f44 vs f43 followed a different pattern on nucleation days compared to non-nucleation days, whereby f43 decreased for vehicle emission generated particles, while both f44 and f43 decreased for NPF generated particles. It was found for the first time that vehicle generated and newly formed particles cluster in different locations on f44 vs f43 plot and this finding can be used as a tool for source apportionment of measured particles.

The relative efficacies of three chemically different nano-silver (NS) formulations were evaluated for their potential to extend the vase life of short-lived cut Acacia holosericea foliage. The novel proprietary formulations were neutral NS, acidic NS and ionic NS. They were characterised in terms of particle size, pH value, colour and odour. The NS treatments were applied as vase (lower concentrations) or pulse (higher concentrations) solutions. Among the treatments compared, neutral NS as a 4 mg L-1 vase solution or as a 40 mg L-1 24 h pulse treatment and acidic NS as a 0.5 mg L-1 vase solution or as a 5 mg L-1 24 h pulse treatment significantly (P <= 0.05) extended the vase life of A. holosericea. Vase life extensions over the deionised water (DI) controls were associated with better maintenance of relative fresh weight and vase water uptake, suppression of bacterial growth in the vase water and stem-end, and delaying stem blockage. In contrast, ionic-NS applied as a 0.5 or 1 mg L-1 vase solution treatment or as a 5 or 10 mg L-1 pulse treatment caused severe phytotoxicity to cut A. holosericea stems. The results suggest that NS treatments, especially neutral NS and acidic NS pulse treatments, could be a potential postharvest technology for commercial application to cut A. holosericea. Well uniform microspheres of phase pure Covellite were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal approach using poly vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactant. The micro-spheres were constituted of numerous self-organized knitted nano-ribbons of similar to 30 nm thickness. The effect of conc. PVP in the hydrothermal precursor solution on the product morphology was investigated. Based on the out-coming product micro-architecture a growth mechanism was proposed which emphasized bubbled nucleation inside the hydrothermal reactor. In a comparative study on linear optical properties, enhancement of luminescent intensity was observed for nano-ribbon clung microspheres rather than that of agglomerates of distorted particles, which may be attributed to better crystallinity as well as reduced surface defects and ionic vacancies for ribbon-like nano-structures.

A mathematical model for glucose and oxygen consumption, and cell growth during fungal growth on a single solid particle is developed. A moving biofilm is assumed to be present on the surface of the solid particle. Initially only glucose is assumed to be growth limiting and later oxygen transferred from the gas phase on to the biofilm is also assumed to be growth limiting. Glucose is found to be severely growth limiting when assumed to be the only growth limiting factor and its limiting levels far less severe when oxygen limitation is also included. The objective of the model is to gain a better understanding of the mass transfer and relative growth limiting characteristics of glucose and oxygen in fungal growth systems. The results obtained from the model proposed here will be the subject of future work.

Treeing in polyethylene based nanocomposite samples as well as unfilled polyethylene samples were studied using 50Hz ac voltage. The tree inception voltage was observed for different types of samples. The tree initiation time as well as the tree growth patterns at a fixed ac voltage have also been studied. The results show that there is an improvement in tree inception voltage with nano filler loading in polyethylene. Different tree growth patterns for both the unfilled polyethylene and the polyethylene nanocomposites have been observed. A slower tree growth was observed in polyethylene nanocomposites. The partial discharge characteristics of unfilled and nano filled polyethylene samples during the electrical tree growth period was also studied. Decrease in PD magnitude as well as in the number of pd pulses with electrical tree growth duration in polyethylene nanocomposites has also been observed. The possible reasons for the improvement in electrical tree growth and PD resistance with the addition of nano fillers are discussed.

We report the synthesis of various morphological micro to nano structured zinc oxide crystals via simple precipitation technique. The growth mechanisms of the zinc oxide nanostructures such as snowflake, rose, platelets, porous pyramid and rectangular shapes were studied in detail under various growth conditions. The precursor powders were prepared using several zinc counter ions such as chloride, nitrate and sulphate along with oxalic acid as a precipitating agent. The precursors were decomposed by heating in air resulting in the formation of different shapes of zinc oxide crystals. Variations in ZnO nanostructural shapes were possibly due to the counter ion effect. Sulphate counter ion led to unusual rose-shape morphology. Strong ultrasonic treatment on ZnO rose shows that it was formed by irregular arrangement of micro to nano size hexagonal zinc oxide platelets. The X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the wurzite structure of all zinc oxide samples synthesized using different zinc counter ions. Functional groups of the zinc oxalate precursor and zinc oxide were identified using micro Raman studies. The blue light emission spectra of the various morphologies were recorded using luminescence spectrometer. (C) 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Lead telluride micro and nanostructures have been grown on silicon and glass substrates by a simple thermal evaporation of PbTe in high vacuum of 3 x 10(-5) mbar. Growth was carried out for two different distances between the evaporation source and the substrates. Synthesized products consist of nanorods and micro towers for 2.4 cm and 3.4 cm of distance between the evaporation source and the substrates respectively. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed crystalline nature of the nanorods and micro towers. Nanorods were grown by vapor solid mechanism. Each micro tower consists of nano platelets and is capped with spherical catalyst particle at their end, suggesting that the growth proceeds via vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. EDS spectrum recorded on the tip of the micro tower has shown the presence of Pb and Te confirming the self catalytic VLS growth of the micro towers. These results open up novel synthesis methods for PbTe nano and microstructures for various applications.

The growth of neuroblastoma (N2a) and Schwann cells has been explored on polymer derived carbon substrates of varying micro and nanoscale geometries: resorcinol-formaldehyde (RE) gel derived carbon films and electrospun nanofibrous (similar to 200 nm diameter) mat and SU-8 (a negative photoresist) derived carbon micro-patterns. MTT assay and complementary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay established cytocompatibility of RE derived carbon films and fibers over a period of 6 days in culture. The role of length scale of surface patterns in eliciting lineage-specific adaptive response along, across and on the interspacing between adjacent micropatterns (i.e., ``on'', ``across'' and ``off'') has been assayed. Textural features were found to affect 3',5'-cyclic AMP sodium salt-induced neurite outgrowth, over a wide range of length scales: from similar to 200 nm (carbon fibers) to similar to 60 mu m (carbon patterns). Despite their innate randomness, carbon nanofibers promoted preferential differentiation of N2a cells into neuronal lineage, similar to ordered micro-patterns. Our results, for the first time, conclusively demonstrate the potential of RE-gel and SU-8 derived carbon substrates as nerve tissue engineering platforms for guided proliferation and differentiation of neural cells in vitro. In this study, the effects of nanoscale ZnO reinforcement on the room temperature tensile and compressive response of monolithic Mg were studied. Experimental observations indicated strength properties improvement due to nanoscale ZnO addition. A maximum increment in tensile yield strength by similar to 55% and compressive yield strength by 90% (with reduced tension-compression asymmetry) was achieved when 0.8 vol.% ZnO nanoparticles were added to Mg. While the fracture strain values under tensile loads were found to increase significantly (by similar to 95%, in case of Mg-0.48ZnO), it remained largely unaffected under compressive loads. The microstructural characteristics studied in order to comprehend the mechanical response showed significant grain refinement due to grain boundary pinning effect of nano-ZnO particles which resulted in strengthening of Mg. Texture analysis using X-ray and EBSD methods indicated weakening of basal fibre texture in Mg/ZnO nanocomposites which contributed towards the reduction in tension-compression yield asymmetry and enhancement in tensile ductility when compared to pure Mg. Several soil microbes are present in the rhizosphere zone, especially plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), which are best known for their plant growth promoting activities. The present study reflects the effect of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) at various concentrations on the growth of PGPR. GNPs were synthesized chemically, by reduction of HAuCl 4, and further characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), etc. The impact of GNPs on PGPR was investigated by Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recommended Broth-Microdilution technique against four selected PGPR viz., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus subtilis, Paenibacillus elgii, and Pseudomonas putida. Neither accelerating nor reducing impact was observed in P. putida due to GNPs. On the contrary, significant increase was observed in the case of P. fluorescens, P. elgii, and B. subtilis, and hence, GNPs can be exploited as nano-biofertilizers.

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes were synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using nickel as a metal catalyst. High resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis of the particle found at the tip of the tubes reveals the presence of a metastable carbide Ni3C. Since the carbide is found to decompose upon annealing at 600 degreesC, we suggest that Ni3C is formed after the growth is stopped due to the rapid cooling of the Ni-C interstitial solid solution. A detailed description of the tip growth mechanism is given, that accounts for the composite structure of the tube walls. The shape and size of the catalytic particle determine the concentration gradient that drives the diffusion of C atoms across and though the metal. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

A hybrid method of continuum and particle dynamics is developed for micro- and nano-fluidics, where fluids are described by a molecular dynamics (MD) in one domain and by the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations in another domain. In order to ensure the continuity of momentum flux, the continuum and molecular dynamics in the overlap domain are coupled through a constrained particle dynamics. The constrained particle dynamics is constructed with a virtual damping force and a virtual added mass force. The sudden-start Couette flows with either non-slip or slip boundary condition are used to test the hybrid method. It is shown that the results obtained are quantitatively in agreement with the analytical solutions under the non-slip boundary conditions and the full MD simulations under the slip boundary conditions.
