We report a study of the stellar content of the near-infrared (NIR) cluster [DBS2003] 157 embedded in the extended H ii region GAL 331.31-00.34, which is associated with the IRAS source 16085-5138. JHK photometry was carried out in order to identify potential ionizing candidates, and the follow-up NIR spectroscopy allowed the spectral classification of some sources, including two O-type stars. A combination of NIR photometry and spectroscopy data was used to obtain the distance of these two stars, with the method of spectroscopic parallax: IRS 298 (O6 V, 3.35 +/- 0.61 kpc) and IRS 339 (O9 V, 3.24 +/- 0.56 kpc). Adopting the average distance of 3.29 +/- 0.58 kpc and comparing the Lyman continuum luminosity of these stars with that required to account for the radio continuum flux of the H ii region, we conclude that these two stars are the ionizing sources of GAL 331.31-00.34. Young stellar objects (YSOs) were searched by using our NIR photometry and mid-infrared (MIR) data from the Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) survey. The analysis of NIR and MIR colourcolour diagrams resulted in 47 YSO candidates. The GLIMPSE counterpart of IRAS 16085-5138, which presents IRAS colour indices compatible with an ultracompact H ii region, has been identified. The analysis of its spectral energy distribution between 2 and m revealed that this source shows a spectral index a= 3.6 between 2 and m, which is typical of a YSO immersed in a protostellar envelope. Lower limits to the bolometric luminosity and the mass of the embedded protostar have been estimated as L= 7.7 x 10(3) L? and M= 10 M?, respectively, which correspond to a B0B1 V zero-age main sequence star.

This paper reports on the advancement of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) as stable dispersions of surface-modified gamma-Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid, 1-n-butyl 3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BMI.NTf2). The MNPs were obtained via coprecipitation and were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The surface-modified MNPs (SM-MNPs) were obtained via the silanization of the MNPs with the aid of 1-butyl-3[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]imidazolium chloride (BMSPI.Cl). The SM-MNPs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and Fourier trail: form infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy and by magnetic measurements. The FTIR-ATR spectra of the SM-MNPs exhibited characteristic absorptions of the imidazolium and those of the Fe-O-Si-C moieties, confirming the presence of BMSPI.Cl on the MNP surface. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the SM-MNPs were modified by at least one BMSPI.Cl monolayer. The MILs were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and magnetic measurements. The Raman and DSC results indicated an interaction between the SM-MNPs and the IL. This interaction promotes the formation of a supramolecular structure close to the MNP surface that mimics the IL structure and is responsible for the stability of the MIL. Magnetic measurements of the MILs indicated no hysteresis. Superparamagnetic behavior and a saturation magnetization of similar to 22 emu/g could be inferred from the magnetic measurements of a sample containing 50% w/w gamma-Fe2O3 SM-MNP/BMI-NTf2.

Ionic conducting membranes of gelatin plasticized with glycerol and containing LiI/I-2 have been obtained and characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and impedance spectroscopy. The transparent (80-90% in the visible range) membranes showed ionic conductivity value of 5 x 10(-5) S/cm at room temperature, which increased to 3 x 10(-3) S/cm at 80 degrees C. All the ionic conductivity measurements as a function of temperature showed VTF dependence and activation energy of 8 kJ/mol. These samples also showed low glass transition temperature of -76 degrees C. Moreover the samples were predominantly amorphous. The membranes applied to small electrochromic devices showed 20% of color change from colored to bleached states during more than 70 cronoamperometric cycles.

A tetrathiafulvalene donor has been attached to the naphthalene diimide core via a rigid bridge affording a new planar molecular dyad. Its electronic properties have been studied experimentally by the combination of electrochemistry and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. Various electronic excited charge-transfer states are generated in different oxidation states, leading to almost full absorption in the visible to near-IR region with high extinction coefficients. The observed electronic properties are explained on the basis of density-functional-theory. In particular, the oxidized radical species show a strong tendency to undergo aggregation, in which the long-distance attractive interactions overcome the electrostatic repulsions. Highly selective formation of 2+2 macrocycle 1 from 2,5-bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole and a diamine-functionalized tetrathiafulvalene derivative is reported. Its electronic properties have been studied experimentally by the combination of electrochemistry and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. Particularly, its largely extended pi-conjugation renders this novel macrocycle simultaneously a good multielectron donor and a strong chromophore, which is rationalized on the basis of density functional theory. Presented here, is the work done with a series of binucleating ligands based on phosphine and phosphine oxide appended p-hydroquinones and their reactions towards various metals sources. The long term goal of the project was to produce coordination polymers that would have novel electronic, magnetic, and optical properties which would be of use in the field of molecular electronics. Binucleating ligands contained a p-hydroquinone motif in which various phosphine- and phosphine oxide substituents have been placed in the ortho position relative to each of the hydroxy position were synthesized. A previously published synthetic method for such lugands utilized n-BuLi to form a phenyl lithium intermediate which was quenched with chlorodiphenylphosphine. This technique was also used to produce a ligand with diisopropylphosphine groups. Phosphine ligands, containing the same structural motif, were also generated using LDA as the lithiating agent. This technique was found to be higher yielding. Phosphine chalcogenide ligands were accessed by further oxidizing the low valent phosphorous centers with either hydrogen peroxide or with elemental sulfur. These ligands were characterized using multinuclear NMR, low and high resolution mass spectroscopy, FTIR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Their electrochemical properties were explored with cyclic voltammetry. The phosphine appended ligands were used in the synthesis of a several bimetallic complexes. It was found that the ligands readily reacted with NiCp2 and NiCp*2, displacing one of the cyclopentadiene (Cp) or pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*) rings. A cyclopentadiene complexes, containing diisopropylphine, was readily oxidized by[FeCp2]PF6 to give a NMR silent mixed valence complex. Cyclic voltammetry of these complexes showed a number of reversible waves with a large potential separation. The mixed valence compounds also showed a large absorbance band in the NIR region which was assigned to be an intervalence charge transfer. The cyclic voltammetry and NIR spectroscopy suggest that these systems are very capable of efficient metal-to-metal charge transfer. These complexes were characterized by multinuclear NMR, single crystal X-ray diffraction, UV/VIS-NIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The phosphine oxide ligands were reacted with a variety of different metal sources but limited success was gained in obtaining single crystals, allowing structural characterization of these compounds. Single crystals were obtained from products generated by reacting the diphenylphosphine oxide ligand with (Bipy)Cu(NO3)2 and Cu(NO3)2. In all cases the ligand had been further oxidized to a 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone motif. In the reaction between the diphenylphosphine oxide ligand and (Bipy)Cu(NO3)2 it was found that the phosphine oxide moiety was involved with intermolecular coordination leading to the formation of a one-dimensional polymer composed of a series of bimetallic complexes tethered together. When NaSbF6 was present in the reaction with (Bipy)Cu(NO3)2 a unique tetrametallic complex was formed. Here the phospine oxide moiety was oriented so that two bimetallic complexes were bound together. If only Cu(NO3)2 was present, a two-dimensional polymeric sheet was formed where the ligand was present in two different coordination modes. The electronic properties of these complexes remained to be assessed.

Potential Desiccation Polygons (PDPs), tens to hundreds of meters in size, have been observed in numerous regions on Mars, particularly in ancient (>3Gyr old) terrains of inferred paleolacustrine/playa geologic setting, and in association with hydrous minerals such as smectites. Therefore, a better understanding of the conditions in which large desiccation polygons form could yield unique insight into the ancient climate on Mars. Many dried lakebeds/playas in western United States display large (>50m wide) desiccation polygons, which we consider to be analogues for PDPs on Mars. Therefore, we have carried out fieldwork in seven of these dried lakes in San Bernardino and the Death Valley National Park regions complemented with laboratory and spectral analysis of collected samples. Our study shows that the investigated lacustrine/playa sediments have (a) a soil matrix containing 40-75% clays and fine silt (by volume) where the clay minerals are dominated by illite/muscovite followed by smectite, (b) carbonaceous mineralogy with variable amounts of chloride and sulfate salts, and significantly, (c) roughly similar spectral signatures in the visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) range. We conclude that the development of large desiccation fractures is consistent with water table retreat. In addition, the comparison of the mineralogical to the spectral observations further suggests that remote sensing VIS-NIR spectroscopy has its limitations for detailed characterization of lacustrine/playa deposits. Finally, our results imply that the widespread distribution of PDPs on Mars indicates global or regional climatic transitions from wet conditions to more arid ones making them important candidate sites for future in situ missions.

Allergies and food intolerances are at the forefront of institutional interest (European Regulation No 1169/2011) for their impact on consumer health. Allergies to peanuts and other nuts and gluten intolerance, makes production processes involving mixtures of powders a great concern for the industry, given the need to indicate the existence of traces of any of them. The food industry requires non-destructive and non-invasive methods of quantification that meet sensitivity requirements but also specificity levels. Optical methods such as NIR spectrophotometry or hyper-spectral image are currently some of the technologies that show potential success. This is the context of this paper that evaluates how to use NIR spectroscopy (900-1600nm) to detect traces of 15 different kinds of nuts and 20 other flours.

Eucalyptus pellita demonstrated good growth and wood quality traits in this study, with young plantation grown timber being suitable for both solid and pulp wood products. All traits examined were under moderate levels of genetic control with little genotype by environment interaction when grown on two contrasting sites in Vietnam. Eucalyptus pellita currently has a significant role in reforestation in the tropics. Research to support expanded of use of this species is needed: particularly, research to better understand the genetic control of key traits will facilitate the development of genetically improved planting stock. This study aimed to provide estimates of the heritability of diameter at breast height over bark, wood basic density, Kraft pulp yield, modulus of elasticity and microfibril angle, and the genetic correlations among these traits, and understand the importance of genotype by environment interactions in Vietnam. Data for diameter and wood properties were collected from two 10-year-old, open-pollinated progeny trials of E. pellita in Vietnam that evaluated 104 families from six native range and three orchard sources. Wood properties were estimated from wood samples using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Data were analysed using mixed linear models to estimate genetic parameters (heritability, proportion of variance between seed sources and genetic correlations). Variation among the nine sources was small compared to additive variance. Narrow-sense heritability and genetic correlation estimates indicated that simultaneous improvements in most traits could be achieved from selection among and within families as the genetic correlations among traits were either favourable or close to zero. Type B genetic correlations approached one for all traits suggesting that genotype by environment interactions were of little importance. These results support a breeding strategy utilizing a single breeding population advanced by selecting the best individuals across all seed sources. Both growth and wood properties have been evaluated. Multi-trait selection for growth and wood property traits will lead to more productive populations of E. pellita both with improved productivity and improved timber and pulp properties.

Metal oxide thin films are important for modern electronic devices ranging from thin film transistors to photovoltaics and functional optical coatings. Solution processed techniques allow for thin films to be rapidly deposited over a range of surfaces without the extensive processing of comparative vapour or physical deposition methods. The production of thin films of vanadium oxide prepared through dip-coating was developed enabling a greater understanding of the thin film formation. Mechanisms of depositing improved large area uniform coverage on a number of technologically relevant substrates were examined. The fundamental mechanism for polymer-assisted deposition in improving thin film surface smoothness and long range order has been delivered. Different methods were employed for adapting the alkoxide based dip-coating technique to produce a variety of amorphous and crystalline vanadium oxide based thin films. Using a wide range of material, spectroscopic and optical measurement techniques the morphology, structure and optoelectronic properties of the thin films were studied. The formation of pinholes on the surface of the thin films, due to dewetting and spinodal effects, was inhibited using the polymer assisted deposition technique. Uniform thin films with sub 50 nm thicknesses were deposited on a variety of substrates controlled through alterations to the solvent-alkoxide dilution ratios and employing polymer assisted deposition techniques. The effects of polymer assisted deposition altered the crystallized VO thin films from a granular surface structure to a polycrystalline structure composed of high density small in-plane grains. The formation of transparent VO based thin film through Si and Na substrate mediated diffusion highlighted new methods for material formation and doping.
