The He I photoelectron spectrum of the diethyl ether-ICl complex has been obtained. The oxygen orbitals are shifted to higher binding energies and that of ICl to lower binding energies owing to complex formation. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations of the complex molecule showed that the bonding is between the sigma-type lone pair of oxygen and the I atom and that the complex has C-2v symmetry. The binding energy of the complex is computed to be 8.06 kcal mol(-1) at the MP2/3-21G* level. The orbital energies obtained from the photoelectron spectra of the complex are compared and assigned with orbital energies obtained by MO calculations. Natural bond orbital analysis (NBO) shows that charge transfer is from the sigma-type oxygen lone pair to the iodine atom and the magnitude of charge transfer is 0.0744 e.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on rigid and flexible framework models of silicalite and a rigid framework model of the aluminophosphate VPI-5 for different sorbate diameters are reported. The sorbate-host interactions are modeled in terms of simple atom-atom Lennard-Jones interactions. The results suggest that the diffusion coefficient exhibits an anomaly as gamma approaches unity. The MD results confirm the existence of a linear regime for sorbate diameters significantly smaller than the channel diameter and an anomalous regime observed for sorbate diameters comparable to the channel diameter. The power spectra obtained by Fourier transformation of the velocity autocorrelation function indicate that there is an increase in the intensity of the low-frequency component for the velocity component parallel to the direction of motion for the sorbate diameter in the anomalous regime. The present results suggest that the diffusion anomaly is observed irrespective of (1) the geometry and topology of the pore structure and (2) the nature of the host material. The results are compared with the work of Derouane and co-workers, who have suggested the existence of ''floating molecules'' on the basis of earlier theoretical and computational approaches.

Geometry and energy of argon clusters confined in zeolite NaCaA are compared with those of free clusters. Results indicate the possible existence of magic numbers among the confined clusters. Spectra obtained from instantaneous normal mode analysis of free and confined clusters give a larger percentage of imaginary frequencies for the latter indicating that the confined cluster atoms populate the saddle points of the potential energy surface significantly. The variation of the percentage of imaginary frequencies with temperature during melting is akin to the variation of other properties. It is shown that confined clusters might exhibit inverse surface melting, unlike medium-to-large-sized free clusters that exhibit surface melting. Configurational-bias Monte Carte (CBMC) simulations of n-alkanes in zeolites Y and A are reported. CBMC method gives reliable estimates of the properties relating to the conformation of molecules. Changes in the conformational properties of n-butane and other longer n-alkanes such as n-hexane and n-heptane when they are confined in different zeolites are presented. The changes in the conformational properties of n-butane and n-hexane with temperature and concentration is discussed. In general, in zeolite Y as well as A, there is significant enhancement of the gauche population as compared to the pure unconfined fluid.

The He I photoelectron spectra of bromine, methylamine, and their complex have been obtained, and the spectra show that lone-pair orbital energy of nitrogen in methylamine is stabilized by 1.8 eV and the bromine orbital energies are destabilized by about 0.5 eV due to complexation. Ab initio calculations have been performed on the charge-transfer complexes of Br-2 with ammonia and methyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamines at the 3-21G*, 6-311G, and 6-311G* levels and also with effective core potentials. Calculations predict donor and acceptor orbital energy shifts upon complexation, and there is a reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Complexation energies have been corrected for BSSE. Frequency analysis has confirmed that ammonia and trimethylamine form complexes with C-3v symmetry and methylamine and dimethylamine with C-s symmetry. Calculations reveal that the lone-pair orbital of nitrogen in amine and the sigma* orbital of Br-2 are involved in the charge-transfer interaction. LANL1DZ basis seems to be consistent and give a reliable estimate of the complexation energy. The computed complexation energies, orbital energy shifts, and natural bond orbital analysis show that the strength of the complex gradually increases from ammonia to trimethylamine.

Systematic ab initio molecular orbital studies of the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra of dipropionamide using the basis sets 6-31g(d) and 6-31++G(d,p) have been carried out. The vibrational spectra of dipropionamide have been satisfactorily interpreted taking into account the agreement between the calculated frequencies, infrared and Raman band intensities and the shifts in the spectra of deuterated molecules with those observed. The previous assignments of most of the vibrational bands are well confirmed, a few bands need reassignment, however. The solvent effects were investigated by self-consistent reaction field theory using dipole and self-consistent isodensity polarized continuum model methods. The introduction of a dielectric medium has only a marginal effect on the conformational equilibria and vibrational spectra. However, the calculated changes in geometry and vibrational spectra on going from the gas phase to the solution phase are in accord with the increasing weight of the dipolar resonance structure in polar solvents. The indium nitride (InN)-based nanometric-objects were grown directly on a c-sapphire substrate by using plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE) at different substrate temperatures. High resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) reveals the InN (0002) reflection and full width at half maximum (FWHM) found to be decreased with increasing the growth temperature. The size, height and density of the grown nanometric-objects studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has remarkable differences, evidencing the decisive role of substrate temperature. Photoluminescence (PL) studies revealed that the emission energy is shifted towards the higher side from the bulk value, i.e., a blue shift in the PL spectra was observed. The temperature dependence of the PL peak position shows an ``S-shaped'' emission energy shift, which can be attributed to the localization of carriers in the nanometric-objects.

One of the significant advancements in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) in combating the problem of spectral complexity for deriving the structure and conformational information is the incorporation of additional dimension and to spread the information content in a two dimensional space. This approach together with the manipulation of the dynamics of nuclear spins permitted the designing of appropriate pulse sequences leading to the evolution of diverse multidimensional NMR experiments. The desired spectral information can now be extracted in a simplified and an orchestrated manner. The indirect detection of multiple quantum (MQ) NMR frequencies is a step in this direction. The MQ technique has been extensively used in the study of molecules aligned in liquid crystalline media to reduce spectral complexity and to determine molecular geometries. Unlike in dipolar coupled systems, the size of the network of scalar coupled spins is not big in isotropic solutions and the MQ 1H detection is not routinely employed, although there are specific examples of spin topology filtering. In this brief review, we discuss our recent studies on the development and application of multiple quantum correlation and resolved techniques for the analyses of proton NMR spectra of scalar coupled spins.

Efavirenz, (S)-6-chloro-4-(cyclopropylethynyl)-1,4-dihydro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-3 ,1-benzoxazin-2-one, is an anti HIV agent belonging to the class of the non-nucleoside inhibitors of the HIV-1 virus reverse transcriptase. A systematic quantum chemical study of the possible conformations, their relative stabilities and vibrational spectra of efavirenz has been reported. Structural and spectral characteristics of efavirenz have been studied by vibrational spectroscopy and quantum chemical methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for potential energy curve, optimized geometries and vibrational spectra have been carried out using 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets and B3LYP functionals. Based on these results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the crystalline structure of the most stable form of efavirenz. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The infrared and the Raman spectra of the molecule based on OFT calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental results. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultra thin films of pure beta-Si3N4 (0001) were grown on Si (111) surface by exposing the surface to radio- frequency nitrogen plasma with a high content of nitrogen atoms. Using beta-Si3N4 layer as a buffer layer, GaN epilayers were grown on Si (111) substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The valence band offset (VBO) of GaN/beta-Si3N4/ Si heterojunctions is determined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The VBO at the beta-Si3N4 /Si interface was determined by valence-band photoelectron spectra to be 1.84 eV. The valence band of GaN is found to be 0.41 +/- 0.05 eV below that of beta-Si3N4 and a type-II heterojunction. The conduction band offset was deduced to be similar to 2.36 eV, and a change of the interface dipole of 1.29 eV was observed for GaN/ beta-Si3N4 interface formation. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The Fourier transform Raman and infrared (IR) spectra of the Ceramide 3 (CER3) have been recorded in the regions 200-3500 cm(-1) and 680-4000 cm(-1), respectively. We have calculated the equilibrium geometry, harmonic vibrational wavenumbers, electrostatic potential surfaces, absolute Raman scattering activities and IR absorption intensities by the density functional theory with B3LYP functionals having extended basis set 6-311G. This work is undertaken to study the vibrational spectra of CER3 completely and to identify the various normal modes with better wavenumber accuracy. Good consistency is found between the calculated results and experimental data for the IR and Raman spectra.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films were deposited on fused quartz substrates by electron beam evaporation method at room temperature. The films were annealed at different temperatures in ambient air. The surface morphology/roughness at different annealing temperatures were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallinity of the film has improved with the increase of annealing temperature. The effect of annealing temperature on optical, photoluminescence and Raman spectra of TiO2 films were investigated. The refractive index of TiO2 films were studied by envelope method and reflectance spectra and it is observed that the refractive index of the films was high. The photoluminescence intensity corresponding to green emission was enhanced with increase of annealing temperature. The peaks in Raman spectra depicts that the TiO2 film is of anatase phase after annealing at 300 degrees C and higher. The films show high refractive index, good optical quality and photoluminescence characteristics suggest that possible usage in opto-electronic and optical coating applications. This report focuses on the structural and optical properties of the GaN films grown on p-Si (100) substrates along with photovoltaic characteristics of GaN/p-Si heterojunctions fabricated with substrate nitridation and in absence of substrate nitridation. The high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic studies reveal that the significant enhancement in the structural as well as in the optical properties of GaN epifilms grown with silicon nitride buffer layer when compared with the sample grown without silicon nitride buffer layer. The low temperature PL shows a free excitonic (FX) emission peak at 3.51 eV at the temperature of 5 K with a very narrow line width of 35 meV. Temperature dependent PL spectra follow the Varshni equation well and peak energy blue shifts by similar to 63 meV from 300 to 5 K. Raman data confirms the strain free nature and reasonably good crystallinity of the films. The GaN/p-Si heterojunctions fabricated without substrate nitridation show a superior photovoltaic performance compared to the devices fabricated in presence of substrate nitridation. The discussions have been carried out on the junction properties. Such single junction devices exhibit a promising fill factor and conversion efficiency of 23.36 and 0.12 %, respectively, under concentrated AM1.5 illumination.

Synergizing graphene on silicon based nanostructures is pivotal in advancing nano-electronic device technology. A combination of molecular dynamics and density functional theory has been used to predict the electronic energy band structure and photo-emission spectrum for graphene-Si system with silicon as a substrate for graphene. The equilibrium geometry of the system after energy minimization is obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. For the stable geometry obtained, density functional theory calculations are employed to determine the energy band structure and dielectric constant of the system. Further the work function of the system which is a direct consequence of photoemission spectrum is calculated from the energy band structure using random phase approximations.

Molecules in their liquid crystalline phase undergo rotational motion about the long axis of the molecule and the shape adopted by the rotating molecule plays an important role in influencing the mesophase morphology. In this context, obtaining the topology and the relative orientation of the different sub-units are important steps. For studying the liquid crystalline phase, C-13 NMR spectroscopy is a convenient method and for certain specifically designed nematogens, 2-dimensional separated local field (2D-SLF) NMR spectroscopy provides a particularly simple and straightforward means of arriving at the molecular topology. We demonstrate this approach on two three ring based nematogens designed with a phenyl or a thiophene ring at one of the termini. From the C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings of the terminal carbon obtained using the 2D-SLF NMR technique, the order parameter of the local symmetry axis of the terminal phenyl ring as well as of the long molecular axis could be easily estimated. For the thiophene nematogen, the lack of symmetry of the thiophene moiety necessitates some additional computational steps. The results indicate that the thiophene unit has its local ordering axis oriented away from the long molecular axis by a small angle, consistent with a bent structure expected in view of the thiophene geometry. The experiment also demonstrates the ability of 2D-SLF NMR to provide high resolution spectra by separation of several overlapped resonances in terms of their C-13-H-1 dipolar couplings. The results are consistent with a rod-like topology of the core of the investigated mesogens. The investigation demonstrates the potential of 2D-SLF NMR C-13 spectroscopy for obtaining atomistic level information and its utility for topological studies of different mesogens.
