In recent years unmanned vehicles have grown in popularity, with an ever increasing number of applications in industry, the military and research within air, ground and marine domains. In particular, the challenges posed by unmanned marine vehicles in order to increase the level of autonomy include automatic obstacle avoidance and conformance with the Rules of the Road when navigating in the presence of other maritime traffic. The USV Master Plan which has been established for the US Navy outlines a list of objectives for improving autonomy in order to increase mission diversity and reduce the amount of supervisory intervention. This paper addresses the specific development needs based on notable research carried out to date, primarily with regard to navigation, guidance, control and motion planning. The integration of the International Regulations for Avoiding Collisions at Sea within the obstacle avoidance protocols seeks to prevent maritime accidents attributed to human error. The addition of these critical safety measures may be key to a future growth in demand for USVs, as they serve to pave the way for establishing legal policies for unmanned vessels.

The goal of the POBICOS project is a platform that facilitates the development and deployment of pervasive computing applications destined for networked, cooperating objects. POBICOS object communities are heterogeneous in terms of the sensing, actuating, and computing resources contributed by each object. Moreover, it is assumed that an object community is formed without any master plan; for example, it may emerge as a by-product of acquiring everyday, POBICOS-enabled objects by a household. As a result, the target object community is, at least partially, unknown to the application programmer, and so a POBICOS application should be able to deliver its functionality on top of diverse object communities (we call this opportunistic computing). The POBICOS platform includes a middleware offering a programming model for opportunistic computing, as well as development and monitoring tools. This paper briefly describes the tools produced in the first phase of the project. Also, the stakeholders using these tools are identified, and a development process for both the middleware and applications is presented. © 2009 IEEE.

The Urban Oasis celebrates Ajman’s history as well as encourages a greater future. Stitching into the existing urban fabric of Ajman and the surrounding cities, the master plan provides an entrance that encases a number of different events. From studying other successful event cities, it became apparent the need for a variety of events over a yearly basis.
Sustainability is another key feature of the master plan. From the way the urban network of streets are formed and orientated to how energy is produced and conserved. Another sustainable aspect that drove the master plan was the retention of the camel track. An important and incredible event in itself, the camel track provides an opportunity to celebrate Ajman’s culture and retain an important part of its history.

Portugal, having responsibilities at European level, needs to ensure compliance with European standards, particularly with regard to the European Security Plan for Critical Infrastructures. National critical infrastructures should be a focus of attention with regard to the management of public risks, since these represent "a set of services that are essential to the functioning of the country and the functioning of the forces that ensure national defense." (Soares, 2008) This contribution on national critical infrastructures (CI) has the essential objective of clarifying the development of the strategy adopted by Portugal in pursuit of the security of these fundamental infrastructures. The goal lies not only through producing a descriptive document, but also carry a brief confrontation between the legal framework related to these subjects and the reality in which the Critical Infrastructure Operators and the National Civil Protection Authority (ANPC) operate. It is intended, in this sense, to understand the development of the project for the national security program of critical infrastructures and what effects of its measures on operators. As for the methodology, we followed a methodological strategy, where we combine the literature with data obtained through semi-structured interviews. Portugal, being a geographically peripheral country and having no record of incidents capable of causing major contingencies in key services for the normal development of society, does not have a structured and regulator plan that substantiates the need for operators responsible for CI to invest in security. This same approach is expected at the State level, believing that even though this theme has be widely explored by international institutions, Portugal has not yet tried to give the attention it deserves. Without the existence of an institution and a regulatory system, CI operators can become less available to comply with the legal framework.

In modern society, energy consumption and respect for the environment have become essential aspects of urban planning. The rising demand for alternative sources of energy, coupled with the decline in the construction sector and material usage, gives the idea that the thinking on modern cities, where attention is given to reduced energy consumption, savings, waste recycling and respect for the surrounding environment, is being put into practice. If we examine development of the city over recent centuries, by means of the theories of the most famous and influential urban planners, it is possible to identify the major problems caused by this type of planning. For this reason, in recent urban planning the use of systems of indicators that evaluate and certify land environmentally and energetically guides the master plan toward a more efficient city model. In addition the indicators are targeted on key factors determined by the commissioner or the opportunities the territory itself provides. Due the complexity of the environmental mechanics, the process of design and urban planning has become a challenging issue. The introduction of the indicators system has made it possible to register the life of the process, with a spiral route that allows the design itself to be refined. The aim of this study, built around the creation of a system of urban sustainability indicators that will evaluate highly eco-friendly cities, is to develop a certification system for cities or portions of them. The system will be upgradeable and objective, will employ real data and will be concerned with energy production and consumption.

Model layout of the 3 stage residence expansion to the university proposed in September of 1967. This was a revision of the original master plan which called for high rise residences east of the Tower rather then the sprawling residences shown here. Although modified slightly from the model, the first stage of the residence would become a reality in the form of the Decew Residence. The realization of the second stage would also eventually take place when the Gordon and Betty Vallee Residence was constructed.
