Sr2SbMnO6 (SSM) powders were successfully synthesized at reasonably low temperatures via molten-salt synthesis (MSS) method using eutectic composition of 0.635 Li2SO4-0.365 Na2SO4 (flux). High-temperature cubic phase SSM was stabilized at room temperature by calcining the as-synthesized powders at 900 degrees C/10 h. The phase formation and morphology of these powders were characterized via X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The SSM phase formation associated with similar to 60 nm sized crystallites was also confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The activation energy associated with the particle growth was found to be 95 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1). The dielectric constant of the tetragonal phase of the ceramic (fabricated using this cubic phase powder) with and without the flux (sulphates) has been monitored as a function of frequency (100 Hz-1 MHz) at room temperature. Internal barrier layer capacitance (IBLC) model was invoked to rationalize the dielectric properties.

3C resonances of carbonyl and methyl groups in amides are shifted down-field on interaction with alkali and alkaline earth metal salts. The magnitude of the shift depends on the ionic potential of the cation. Ions like Li+ bind to the amide carbonyl group both in neat amide solutions as well as in concentrated salt solutions in water.

γ-Y 2Si 2O 7 is a promising candidate material both for hightemperature structural applications and as an environmental/thermal barrier coating material due to its unique properties such as high melting point, machinability, thermal stability, low linear thermal expansion coefficient (3.9×10 -6/K, 200°-1300°C), and low thermal conductivity (<3.0 W/ṁK above 300°C). The hot corrosion behavior of γ-Y 2Si 2O 7 in thin-film molten Na 2SO 4 at 850°-1000°C for 20 h in flowing air was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and a mass spectrometer (MS). γ-Y 2Si 2O 7 exhibited good resistance against Na 2SO 4 molten salt. The kinetic curves were well fitted by a paralinear equation: the linear part was caused by the evaporation of Na2SO4 and the parabolic part came from gas products evolved from the hotcorrosion reaction. A thin silica film formed under the corrosion scale was the key factor for retarding the hot corrosion. The apparent activation energy for the corrosion of γ-Y 2Si 2O 7 in Na 2SO 4 molten salt with flowing air was evaluated to be 255 kJ/mol.

γ-Y2Si2O7 is a promising candidate both for high temperature structural applications and as thermal barrier coatings due to its unique combination of properties, such as high melting point, good machinability, high thermal stability, low linear thermal expansion coefficient (3.9 × 10-6 K-1, 25-1400 °C) and low thermal conductivity (<3 W/m K above 300 °C). In this work, the hot corrosion behavior of γ-Y2Si2O7 in strongly basic Na2CO3 molten salt at 850-1000 °C for 20 h in flowing air was investigated. In the employed conditions, multi-layer corrosion scales with total thickness less than 90 μm were formed. At 850-900 °C, the outmost layer of the scale was composed of the reprecipitation of Y2O3, the bottom of a Si-rich Na2O·xSiO2 (x > 3.65) melt layer, and the middle of a NaYSiO4 layer. At 1000 °C, the corrosion products turned out to be a mixture of NaY9Si6O26 and Si-rich Na2O·xSiO2 (x > 3.65). In all cases, a thin layer of protective SiO2 formed under the Na2O·xSiO2 melt and protected the bulk material from further corrosion.

Various metal salts (Na, K, Rb, and NH4) of monochloro acetic acid were prepared and the Cl-35 nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies were measured at room temperature. A comparative study of nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies of monochloro acetic acid and its metal salts is carried out. The frequency shifts obtained in the respective metal chloroacetates are used to estimate the changes in the ionicity of C-Cl bond. Further, the changes in the ionicity of C-Cl bond were used to estimate the percentage of intra-molecular charge transfer between respective cation-anion of the metal salts of chloro acetic acid. The nuclear quadrupole resonance frequency is found to decrease with increasing ionicity of the alkali metal ion.

Surfactant anion intercalated hydroxy salts of copper and cobalt of the formula M(OH)(2-x)(surf)(x)center dot mH(2)O [M = Cu, Co; surf = dodecyl sulfate. dodecyl benzene sulfonate. and x = 0.5 for Cu and 0.67 for Co] delaminate readily in 1-butanol to give translucent colloidal dispersions that are stable for months. The extent of delamination and the colloidal dispersion observed in these solids is higher than what had been observed for layered double hydroxides. The dispersions yield the corresponding nanoparticulate oxides on solvothermal decomposition. While the copper hydroxy salt forms similar to 300 nm dendrimer-like CuO nanostructures comprising nanorods of similar to 10 nm diameter, the cobalt analogue forms similar to 20 nm superparamagnetic particles of Co3O4.

Molten globule-like intermediates have been shown to occur during protein folding and are thought to be involved in protein translocation and membrane insertion. However, the determinants of molten globule stability and the extent of specific packing in molten globules is currently unclear. Using far- and near-UV CD and intrinsic and ANS fluorescence, we show that four periplasmic binding proteins (LBP, LIVBP, MBP, and RBP) form molten globules at acidic pH values ranging from 3.0 to 3.4. Only two of these (LBP and LIVBP) have similar sequences, but all four proteins adopt similar three-dimensional structures. We found that each of the four molten globules binds to its corresponding ligand without conversion to the native state. Ligand binding affinity measured by isothermal titration calorimetry for the molten globule state of LIVBP was found to be comparable to that of the corresponding native state, whereas for LBP, MBP, and RBP, the molten globules bound ligand with approximately 5-30-fold lower affinity than the corresponding native states. All four molten globule states exhibited cooperative thermal unfolding assayed by DSC. Estimated values of Delta C-p of unfolding show that these molten globule states contain 28-67% of buried surface area relative to the native states. The data suggest that molten globules of these periplasmic binding proteins retain a considerable degree of long range order. The ability of these sequentially unrelated proteins to form highly ordered molten globules may be related to their large size as well as an intrinsic property of periplasmic binding protein folds.

The commercial acrylic fibre "Cashmilon" was partially hydrolyzed to convert a fraction of its nitrile (-CN) groups to carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups and then coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) resin and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to produce a novel gel-coated fibrous sorbent with multiple functionalities of cationic, anionic and chelating types, and significantly faster sorption kinetics than bead-form sorbents. The sorption properties of the fibrous sorbent were measured using Zn(II) in aqueous solution as the sorbate to determine the effects of pH and the presence of common ions in the solution on the sorption capacity. The rate of sorption on the gel-coated fibre was measured in comparison with that on Amberlite IRA-68 weak-base resin beads, to demonstrate the marked difference between fibre and bead-form sorbents in their kinetic behaviour.

Room temperature, magnesium ion-conducting molten electrolytes are prepared using a combination of acetamide, urea and magnesium triflate or magnesium perchlorate. The molten liquids show high ionic conductivity, of the order of mS cm(-1) at 298 K. Vibrational spectroscopic studies based on triflate/perchlorate bands reveal that the free ion concentration is higher than that of ion-pairs and aggregates in the melt. Electrochemical reversibility of magnesium deposition and dissolution is demonstrated using cyclic voltammetry and impedance studies. The transport number of Mg2+ ion determined by means of a combination of d.c. and ac. techniques is similar to 0.40. Preliminary studies on the battery characteristics reveal good capacity for the magnesium rechargeable cell and open up the possibility of using this unique class of acetamide-based room temperature molten electrolytes in secondary magnesium batteries. A central question in biological chemistry is the minimal structural requirement of a protein that would determine its specificity and activity, the underlying basis being the importance of the entire structural element of a protein with regards to its activity vis a vis the overall integrity and stability of the protein. Although there are many reports on the characterization of protein folding/ unfolding intermediates, with considerable secondary structural elements but substantial loss of tertiary structure, none of them have been reported to show any activity toward their respective ligands. This may be a result of the conditions under which such intermediates have been isolated or due to the importance of specific structural elements for the activity. In this paper we report such an intermediate in the unfolding of peanut agglutinin that seems to retain, to a considerable degree, its carbohydrate binding specificity and activity. This result has significant implications on the molten globule state during the folding pathway(s) of proteins in general and the quaternary association in legume lectins in particular, where precise subunit topology is required for their biologic activities.

Polyaniline salts have been synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of phenoxy acetic acid and its two derivatives using emulsion method at room temperature and characterized by different techniques such as infrared, H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, wide angle X-ray diffractograms and conductivity measurements. These polyaniline salts have the desirable property of high solubility for processibility in solvents such as DNIF, DMSO and a mixture of CHCl3 and acetone and they exhibit fairly good conductivity of similar to 3.0 x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The variations in solubility, conductivity and morphology with the protonating strength of the dopants are examined.

Proton magnetic resonance spectra of single crystals of two Tutton's salts, K2Zn (SO4)2.6H22O and K2Mg (SO4)2.6H2O, have been studied and the orientations of the water molecules in the structure have been determined. Using the heavy-atom structure of (NH4) 2Mgt(SO4)2.6H2O as determined by x-ray diffraction, a system of hydrogen bonds between the water and sulfate oxygens in Tutton's salts has been proposed. It appears that the x-ray structure needs considerable refinement.

Binary room temperature molten electrolytes based on acetamide and zinc perchlorate have been prepared and characterized. The electrolytes are found to be highly zinc ion-conducting with very favorable physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics. Raman and infrared spectroscopic studies reveal the presence of large free-ion concentration in the molten liquid. This is corroborated by the high conductivity observed under ambient conditions. Rechargeable zinc batteries assembled using gamma-MnO2 as the cathode and Zn as the anode with the molten electrolyte show high discharge capacities over several cycles, indicating excellent reversibility. This unique class of acetamide-based, room temperature molten liquids may become viable and green alternative electrolytes for rechargeable zinc-based secondary batteries. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc.
