Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/human herpesvirus 8 [HHV8]) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV/HHV4) are distantly related gammaherpesviruses causing tumors in humans. KSHV latency-associated nuclear antigen 1 (LANA1) is functionally similar to the EBV nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA1) protein expressed during viral latency, although they have no amino acid similarities. EBNA1 escapes cytotoxic lymphocyte (CTL) antigen processing by inhibiting its own proteosomal degradation and retarding its own synthesis to reduce defective ribosomal product processing. We show here that the LANA1 QED-rich central repeat (CR) region, particularly the CR2CR3 subdomain, also retards LANA1 synthesis and markedly enhances LANA1 stability in vitro and in vivo. LANA1 isoforms have half-lives greater than 24 h, and fusion of the LANA1 CR2CR3 domain to a destabilized heterologous protein markedly decreases protein turnover. Unlike EBNA1, the LANA1 CR2CR3 subdomain retards translation regardless of whether it is fused to the 5′ or 3′ end of a heterologous gene construct. Manipulation of sequence order, orientation, and composition of the CR2 and CR3 subdomains suggests that specific peptide sequences rather than RNA structures are responsible for synthesis retardation. Although mechanistic differences exist between LANA1 and EBNA1, the primary structures of both proteins have evolved to minimize provoking CTL immune responses. Simple strategies to eliminate these viral inhibitory regions may markedly improve vaccine effectiveness by maximizing CTL responses. Copyright © 2007, American Society for Microbiology. Anurans may be brightly colored or completely cryptic. Generally, in the former situation, we are dealing with aposematism, and the latter is an example of camouflage. However, these are only simple views of what such colorations really mean and which defensive strategy is implied. For instance, a brightly colored frog may be part of a mimicry ring, which could be either Batesian, Müllerian, or Browerian. These are only examples of the diversity of color-usage systems as defensive strategies. Unfortunately, reports on the use of colors as defensive mechanisms are widespread in the available literature, and the possible functions are rarely mentioned. Therefore, we reviewed the literature and added new data to this subject. Then, we the use of colors (as defensive mechanism) into categories. Mimicry was divided into the subcategories camouflage, homotypy, and nondeceitful homotypy, and these groups were also subcategorized. Dissuasive coloration was divided into behavioral display of colors, polymorphism, and polyphenism. Aposematism was treated apart, but aposematic colorations may be present in other defensive strategies. Finally, we propose functions and forms of evolution for some color systems in post-metamorphic anurans and hope that this review can be the basis for future research, even on other animal groups. © 2009 L. The Potoos form an exclusively neotropical family of nocturnal birds distributed throughout Central and South America, except Chile, and reaching their highest diversity in the Amazon region. The seven currently recognized species are certainly among the most poorly known birds of this region. They are characterized by a distinctive mimicry of vegetal trunks, where they remain almost motionless during daytime. For this reason, their nocturnal and cryptic habits make them exceedingly difficult to study. Published accounts on behavior and natural history of the family are scarce and contributions regarding its anatomy are rare. Here we sample six of the seven currently recognized species of Nyctibiidae, including Nyctibius grandis, N. aethereus, N. griseus, N. jamaicensis, N. leucopterus and N. bracteatus, in order to conduct a detailed and illustrated description of the skull and jaw osteology. High interspecific variation in skull osteology was observed in the family. Species of this family possess a highly modified skull, adapted to their life habits, which shelters their well developed eyes and permits a large mouth opening. The bones that form the palate structure exhibit a dorsoventral flattening, particularly in the pterigoid and parasphenoid bones, with the palatine bone being a broadly developed, wing-shaped structure. In the maxilar region, near the jugal arch, there is a tooth-like projection, unique among birds, which may assist in the retention of prey upon capture. The vomer bone is highly variable within the family, showing varying numbers of rostral projections amongst species. The broad occipital region exhibits large spacing between the quadrate bones, which are vertically disposed and possess a reduced processus orbitalis. The mandible, which is flexible and elastic, has an extremely short symphyseal region and sindesmotic joints in both mandibular rami. As a family, potoos possess a highly specialized skull which provides insight into the relationship between the form of the structures and the feeding habits of the species. Furthermore, the large interspecific variation in skull morphology emphasizes the needs for taxonomic revision within the family, which at present is lumped into a single genus.

The protozoan parasite Leishmania is an intracellular pathogen infecting and replicating inside vertebrate host macrophages. A recent model suggests that promastigote and amastigote forms of the parasite mimic mammalian apoptotic cells by exposing phosphatidylserine (PS) at the cell surface to trigger their phagocytic uptake into host macrophages. PS presentation at the cell surface is typically analyzed using fluorescence-labeled annexin V. Here we show that Leishmania promastigotes can be stained by fluorescence-labeled annexin V upon permeabilization or miltefosine treatment. However, combined lipid analysis by thin-layer chromatography, mass spectrometry and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy revealed that Leishmania promastigotes lack any detectable amount of PS. Instead, we identified several other phospholipid classes such phosphatidic acid, phosphatidylethanolamine; phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol as candidate lipids enabling annexin V staining.

Timorus sarcophagoides, new species (type-locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais, Santana do Riacho - Serra do Cipo, 43 degrees 35'W 19 degrees 17'S, 1200-1300m ASL), is described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished mainly from the other species of the genus by the sexual dimorphism of the male rostrum armed with a hooked tubercle at the base of the dorsal carina, while the tubercle is absent in the female and the corresponding region of the carina is only tumid. The new species has a striking pattern of coloration and behavior that mimics flesh-flies in the family Sarcophagidae. Observations on the natural history of the new species are reported and discussed.

Invasive exotic species can negatively impact local biodiversity. We present here a report of a nest predation of an endemic bird species, variable oriole (Icterus pyrrhopterus) by the introduced black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata)in an agricultural landscape highly disturbed by human activities. Two nestlings were predated, by adults of the introduced marmoset during two alternate days. Antipredator behavior and vocal mimicry were observed in variable oriole, while copulation was observed in black-tufted marmoset during the predation. The use of mobbing against predators by I. pyrrhopterus was observed and it is described here by the first time. The potential impact of the introduced marmosets to local biodiversity is discussed.

We describe the juvenile plumages of the Cinereous Mourner (Laniocera hypopyrra) and the Brazilian Laniisoma (Laniisoma elegans). Both L. hypopyrra and L. elegans possess a dramatically conspicuous plumage as juveniles in contrast to the generally cryptic plumage pattern exhibited by most juvenile birds. They are predominantly covered by cinnamon-orange feathers with black terminal spots, contrasting with the nest and the predominant colors of their environment. This colorful plumage presumably makes them more at risk from predation by visually oriented animals (e.g., raptors and primates), during one of the most vulnerable phases of their life, and strongly suggests these plumages function as a true, or false (mimicry), signal of 'unprofitability'. Previous knowledge concerning the phylogenetic relationships between these two genera, and the juvenile plumage patterns of other species placed in the Tityridae indicate this shared character in L. hypopyrra and L. elegans represents a synapomorphy within this clade, thereby providing additional evidence of their relationship. Chemists have long sought to extrapolate the power of biological catalysis and recognition to synthetic systems. These efforts have focused largely on low molecular weight catalysts and receptors; however, biological systems themselves rely almost exclusively on polymers, proteins and RNA, to perform complex chemical functions. Proteins and RNA are unique in their ability to adopt compact, well-ordered conformations, and specific folding provides precise spatial orientation of the functional groups that comprise the “active site”. These features suggest that identification of new polymer backbones with discrete and predictable folding propensities (“foldamers”) will provide a basis for design of molecular machines with unique capabilities. The foldamer approach complements current efforts to design unnatural properties into polypeptides and polynucleotides. The aim of this thesis is the synthesis and conformational studies of new classes of foldamers, using a peptidomimetic approach. Moreover their attitude to be utilized as ionophores, catalysts, and nanobiomaterials were analyzed in solution and in the solid state. This thesis is divided in thematically chapters that are reported below. It begins with a very general introduction (page 4) which is useful, but not strictly necessary, to the expert reader. It is worth mentioning that paragraph I.3 (page 22) is the starting point of this work and paragraph I.5 (page 32) isrequired to better understand the results of chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 1 (page 39) is reported the synthesis and conformational analysis of a novel class of foldamers containing (S)-β3-homophenylglycine [(S)-β3-hPhg] and D- 4-carboxy-oxazolidin-2-one (D-Oxd) residues in alternate order is reported. The experimental conformational analysis performed in solution by IR, 1HNMR, and CD spectroscopy unambiguously proved that these oligomers fold into ordered structures with increasing sequence length. Theoretical calculations employing ab initio MO theory suggest a helix with 11-membered hydrogenbonded rings as the preferred secondary structure type. The novel structures enrich the field of peptidic foldamers and might be useful in the mimicry of native peptides. In chapter 2 cyclo-(L-Ala-D-Oxd)3 and cyclo-(L-Ala-DOxd) 4 were prepared in the liquid phase with good overall yields and were utilized for bivalent ions chelation (Ca2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Hg2+); their chelation skill was analyzed with ESI-MS, CD and 1HNMR techniques and the best results were obtained with cyclo-(L-Ala-D-Oxd)3 and Mg2+ or Ca2+. Chapter 3 describes an application of oligopeptides as catalysts for aldol reactions. Paragraph 3.1 concerns the use of prolinamides as catalysts of the cross aldol addition of hydroxyacetone to aromatic aldeydes, whereas paragraphs 3.2 and 3.3 are about the catalyzed aldol addition of acetone to isatins. By means of DFT and AIM calculations, the steric and stereoelectronic effects that control the enantioselectivity in the cross-aldol addition of acetone to isatin catalysed by L-proline have been studied, also in the presence of small quantities of water. In chapter 4 is reported the synthesis and the analysis of a new fiber-like material, obtained from the selfaggregation of the dipeptide Boc-L-Phe-D-Oxd-OBn, which spontaneously forms uniform fibers consisting of parallel infinite linear chains arising from singleintermolecular N-H···O=C hydrogen bonds. This is the absolute borderline case of a parallel β-sheet structure. Longer oligomers of the same series with general formula Boc-(L-Phe-D-Oxd)n-OBn (where n = 2-5), are described in chapter 5. Their properties in solution and in the solid state were analyzed, in correlation with their attitude to form intramolecular hydrogen bond. In chapter 6 is reported the synthesis of imidazolidin-2- one-4-carboxylate and (tetrahydro)-pyrimidin-2-one-5- carboxylate, via an efficient modification of the Hofmann rearrangement. The reaction affords the desired compounds from protected asparagine or glutamine in good to high yield, using PhI(OAc)2 as source of iodine(III).

The evolution of a sub-family of south-american freshwater catfishes has created a great diversification of its representants into a huge number of species, usually members of characteristic mimicry communities. After the work of Alexandrou (Alexandrou, 2011) on the phylogeny of the group that discovered the existence of more deep divisions, from the taxonomic point of view, of the sub-family, even from the ecological point of view, I tried to reconfirm these statements from the ethological point of view, settling watching and recording sessions and an experiment that could show their interactions on the environment by observing their substrate mixing action.
