The hydrogenation of benzene and benzene derivatives was studied using Ru(0) nanoparticles prepared by a very simple method based on the in situ reduction of the commercially available precursor ruthenium dioxide under mild conditions (75 degrees C and hydrogen pressure 4atm) in imidazolium ionic liquids. Total turnovers (TTO) of 2700 mol/mol Ru were obtained for the conversion of benzene to cyclohexane under solventless conditions and TTO of 1200 mol/mol Ru were observed under ionic liquid biphasic conditions. When corrected for exposed ruthenium atoms, TTO values of 7940 (solventless) and 3530 (biphasic) were calculated for benzene hydrogenation. These reaction rates are higher than those observed for Ru nanoparticles prepared from decomposition of an organometallic precursor in similar conditions. The presence of the partially hydrogenated product cyclohexene was also detected at low conversion rates. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Asystematic study on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for 3,6-bi-2-pyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bptz) adsorbed onto citrate-modified gold nanoparticles (cit-AuNps) was carried out based on electronic and vibrational spectroscopy and density functional methods. The citrate/bptz exchange was carefully controlled by the stepwise addition of bptz to the cit-AuNps, inducing flocculation and leading to the rise of a characteristic plasmon coupling band in the visible region. Such stepwise procedure led to a uniform decrease of the citrate SERS signals and to the rise of characteristic peaks of bptz, consistent with surface binding via the N heterocyclic atoms. In contrast, single addition of a large amount of bptz promoted complete aggregation of the nanoparticles, leading to a strong enhancement of the SERS signals. In this case, from the distinct Raman profiles involved, the formation of a new SERS environment became apparent, conjugating the influence of the local hot spots and charge-transfer (CT) effects. The most strongly enhanced vibrations belong to a(1) and b(2) representations, and were interpreted in terms of the electromagnetic and the CT mechanisms: the latter involving significant contribution of vibronic coupling in the system. This work presents results of studies of carbon-dispersed Pt-Rh (1:1) nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for the ethanol electro-oxidation. The influences of the crystallite size and the cell temperature on the yields of CO2, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are investigated. Metal nanoparticles were prepared by two different routes: (1) impregnation on carbon powder followed by thermal reduction on hydrogen atmosphere and (2) chemical reduction of the precursor salts. The surface active area and the electrochemical activity of the electrocatalysts were estimated by CO stripping and cyclic voltammetry in the absence and in the presence of ethanol, respectively. Reaction intermediates and products were analyzed by in situ Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The electrochemical stripping of CO and the electrochemical ethanol oxidation were slightly faster on the Pt-Rh electrocatalysts compared to Pt/C. Also, in situ FTIR spectra and DEMS measurements evidenced that the CO2/acetaldehyde and the CO2/acetic acid ratios are higher for the Pt-Rh/C materials in relation to Pt/C. This was ascribed to the activation of the C-C bond breaking by Rh, this being more prominent for the materials with smaller crystallite sizes. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents the synthesis and characterization of SiO2:metal (Ni, Co, Ag, and Fe) nanocomposites processed by the polymerizable complex method. The polymeric precursor solutions obtained were characterized by means of FT-Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The results show the formation of a hybrid polymer with carbon and silicon in the macromolecule chain and the transition metal cation arrested within this polymeric chain. The nanocomposites are formed during the controlled polymeric precursor pyrolysis. The reduction of the metal cation is promoted by the CO/CO2 atmosphere resulting from the pyrolysis of the organic material. Microstructural characterization, performed by TEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showed that the nanocomposites are formed by metal nanoparticles embedded in a amorphous matrix formed by SiO2 and carbon. In the SiO2:Fe system, Fe3C was also detected by XRD.

The sluggish kinetics of ethanol oxidation on Pt-based electrodes is one of the major drawbacks to its use as a liquid fuel in direct ethanol fuel cells, and considerable efforts have been made to improve the reaction kinetics. Herein, we report an investigation on the effect of the Pt microstructure (well-dispersed versus agglomerated nanoparticles) and the catalyst support (carbon Vulcan, SnO2, and RuO2) on the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol and its major adsorbed intermediate, namely, carbon monoxide. By using several structural characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, along with potentiodynamic and potentiostatic electrochemical experiments, we show that by altering both the Pt microstructure and the support, the rate of the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol can be improved up to a factor of 12 times compared to well-dispersed carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles. As a result of a combined effect, the interaction of Pt agglomerates with SnO2 yielded the highest current densities among all materials studied. The differences in the activity are discussed in terms of structural and electronic properties as well as by mass transport effects, providing valuable insights to the development of more active materials. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The understanding and control of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconducting oxides (DMO) is a special challenge in solid-state physics and materials science due to its impact in magneto-optical devices and spintronics. Several studies and mechanisms have been proposed to explain intrinsic ferromagnetism in DMO compounds since the theoretical prediction of room-temperature ferromagnetism. However, genuine and intrinsic ferromagnetism in 3d-transition metal-doped n-type ZnO semiconductors is still a controversial issue. Furthermore, for DMO nanoparticles, some special physical and chemical effects may also play a role. In this contribution, structural and magnetic properties of sonochemically prepared cobalt-doped ZnO nanoparticles were investigated. A set of ZnO samples was prepared varying cobalt molar concentration and time of ultrasonic exposure. The obtained results showed that single phase samples can be obtained by the sonochemical method. However, cobalt nanoclusters can be detected depending on synthesis conditions. Magnetic measurements indicated a possible ferromagnetic response, associated to defects and cobalt substitutions at the zinc site by cobalt. However, ferromagnetism is depleted at higher magnetic fields. Also, an antiferromagnetic response is detected due to cobalt oxide cluster at high cobalt molar concentrations. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Relative to the Er3 +:gold-nanoparticle (Er3 +:Au-NP) axis, the polarization of the gold nanoparticle can be longitudinal (electric dipole parallel to the Er3 +:Au-NP axis) or transverse (electric dipole perpendicular to the Er3 +:Au-NP axis). For longitudinal polarization, the plasmon resonance modes of gold nanoparticles embedded in Er3 +-doped germanium-tellurite glass are activated using laser lines at 808 and 488 nm in resonance with radiative transitions of Er3 + ions. The gold nanoparticles were grown within the host glass by thermal annealing over various lengths of time, achieving diameters lower than 1.6 nm. The resonance wavelengths, determined theoretically and experimentally, are 770 and 800 nm. The absorption wavelength of nanoparticles was determined by using the Frohlich condition. Gold nanoparticles provide tunable emission resulting in a large enhancement for the 2H11/2 → 4I13/2 (emission at 805 nm) and 4S 3/2 → 4I13/2 (emission at 840 nm) electronic transitions of Er3 + ions; this is associated with the quantum yield of the energy transfer process. The excitation pathways, up-conversion and luminescence spectra of Er3 + ions are described through simplified energy level diagrams. We observed that up-conversion is favored by the excited-state absorption due to the presence of the gold nanoparticles coupled with the Er3 + ions within the glass matrix. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The aim of this Account is to provide an overview of our current research activities on the design and modification of superparamagnetic nanomaterials for application in the field of magnetic separation and catalysis. First, an introduction of magnetism and magnetic separation is done. Then, the synthetic strategies that have been developed for generating superparamagnetic nanoparticles spherically coated by silica and other oxides, with a focus on well characterized systems prepared by methods that generate samples of high quality and easy to scale- up, are discussed. A set of magnetically recoverable catalysts prepared in our research group by the unique combination of superparamagnetic supports and metal nanoparticles is highlighted. This Account is concluded with personal remarks and perspectives on this research field.

This paper reports the synthesis of Au nanoparticles by 30-fs pulses irradiation of a sample containing HAuCl4 and chitosan, a biopolymer used as reducing agent and stabilizer. We observed that it is a multi-photon induced process, with a threshold irradiance of 3.8 x 10(11) W/cm(2) at 790 nm. By transmission electron microscopy we observed nanoparticles from 8 to 50 nm with distinct shapes. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that the reduction of gold and consequent production of nanoparticles is related to the fs-pulse induced oxidation of hydroxyl to carbonyl groups in chitosan. This manuscript reports on the fabrication of plasmonic substrates using cathodic arc plasma ion implantation, in addition to their performance as SERS substrates. The technique allows for the incorporation of a wide layer of metallic nanoparticles into a polymer matrix, such as PMMA. The ability to pattern different structures using the PMMA matrix is one of the main advantages of the fabrication method. This opens up new possibilities for obtaining tailored substrates with enhanced performance for SERS and other surface-enhanced spectroscopies, as well as for exploring the basic physics of patterned metal nanostructures. The architecture of the SERS-active substrate was varied using three adsorption strategies for incorporating a laser dye (rhodamine): alongside the nanoparticles into the polymer matrix, during the polymer cure and within nanoholes lithographed on the polymer. As a proof-of-concept, we obtained the SERS spectra of rhodamine for the three types of substrates. The hypothesis of incorporation of rhodamine molecules into the polymer matrix during the cathodic arc plasma ion implantation was supported by FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) simulations. In the case of arrays of nanoholes, rhodamine molecules could be adsorbed directly on the gold surface, then yielding a well-resolved SERS spectrum for a small amount of analyte owing to the short-range interactions and the large longitudinal field component inside the nanoholes. The results shown here demonstrate that the approach based on ion implantation can be adapted to produce reproducible tailored substrates for SERS and other surface-enhanced spectroscopies.

Nanoplasmonics and metamaterials sciences are rapidly growing due to their contributions to photonic devices fabrication with applications ranging from biomedicine to photovoltaic cells. Noble metal nanoparticles incorporated into polymer matrix have great potential for such applications due to their distinctive optical properties. However, methods to indirectly incorporate metal nanoparticles into polymeric microstructures are still on demand. Here we report on the fabrication of two-photon polymerized microstructures doped with gold nanoparticles through an indirect doping process, so they do not interfere in the two-photon polymerization (2PP) process. Such microstructures present a strong emission, arising from gold nanoparticles fluorescence. The microstructures produced are potential candidates for nanoplasmonics and metamaterials devices applications and the nanoparticles production method can be applied in many samples, heated simultaneously, opening the possibility for large scale processes. The synthesis and characterization methods of metal nanoparticles (NPs) have advanced greatly in the last few decades, allowing an increasing understanding of structure-property-performance relationships. However, the role played by the ligands used as stabilizers for metal NPs synthesis or for NPs immobilization on solid supports has been underestimated. Here, we highlight some recent progress in the preparation of supported metal NPs with the assistance of ligands in solution or grafted on solid supports, a modified deposition-reduction method, with special attention to the effects on NPs size, metal-support interactions and, more importantly, catalytic activities. After presenting the general strategies in metal NP synthesis assisted by ligands grafted on solid supports, we highlight some recent progress in the deposition of pre-formed colloidal NPs on functionalized solids. Another important aspect that will be reviewed is related to the separation and recovery of NPs. Finally, we will outline our personal understanding and perspectives on the use of supported metal NPs prepared through ligand-assisted methods.
