This research evaluated the effects of Branemark protocol on electromyography of the masseter and temporal muscles. The patients were divided into two groups: Group 1: patients who wore an implant-supported prosthesis in the mandibular arch following Branemark protocol, and maxillary removable complete dentures; Group II: dentate individuals (control). Electromyography was carried out at rest, right (RL) and left (LL) laterality, protrusion and maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Data were compared by t-test. At rest, a higher electromyographic (EMG) activity was observed in Group I, and the values were significant in the right masseter and left temporal muscles. In RL, there were statistically significant differences for right masseter (P < 0.01), left masseter and temporal muscles and for the left temporal muscle in LL (P < 0.05). In protrusion, Group I presented a higher EMG activity, and there was a statistically significant difference for the right masseter muscle (RM) (P < 0.05). In MVC, the EMG values were higher in Group II (control), but significant just for the right temporal muscle (P < 0.05). In conclusion, individuals with mandibular fixed dentures supported according to the Branemark protocol and maxillary removable complete dentures showed a higher activity of masticatory muscles during the mandibular postural clinical conditions examined; however, in the MVC, Group I presented lower values when compared to dentate group. Despite presenting different EMG values in all of the clinical conditions, both groups showed similar EMG patterns of muscle activation which demonstrates that the proposed treatment can be considered as a good option for oral rehabilitation.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of light guide distance and the different photoactivation methods on the degree of conversion (DC) and microleakage of a composite. Methods and Materials: Three photoactivation protocols (600mW/cm(2) x 40 seconds; 400 mW/cm(2) x 60 seconds or 200 mW/cm(2) x 20 seconds, followed by 500 mW/cm(2) X 40 seconds) and three distances from the light source (0, 3 or 7 mm) were tested. Cylindrical specimens (5 nun diameter; 2 mm tall; n=3) were prepared for the DC test (FT-Raman). Class V cavities were made in 90 bovine incisors to conduct the microleakage test. The specimens were conditioned for 15 seconds with phosphoric acid (37%), followed by application of the adhesive system Prime & Bond NT (Dentsply/Caulk). The preparations were restored in bulk. The specimens were stored for 24 hours in distilled water (37 degrees C) before being submitted to the silvernitrate microleakage protocol. The restorations were sectioned and analyzed under 25x magnification. Results: Statistical analyses (two-way ANOVAs and Tukey test, alpha=0.05) found significance only for the factor distance (p=0.015) at the top of the composite for the DC test. Conversion was statistically lower for the 7 mm groups compared to the 0 and 3 mm groups, which were equivalent to each other. At the bottom of the specimens, none of the factors or interactions was significant (p<0.05). The Kruskal-Wallis test showed that, in general, the soft-start method led to lower microleakage scores when compared to the continuous modes, mainly when associated with a distancing of 7 mm (p<0.01). With the exception of specimens irradiated with 400mW/cm(2) that did not demonstrate variations on scores for the distances tested, higher microleakage was observed for shorter distances from the light source. Conclusions: Soft-start methods may reduce microleakage when the light guide distancing provides a low level of irradiance, which also causes a discrete reduction in the DC.

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how curing protocol affects the extent of polymerization of dual-cured resin cements. Methods. Four commercial resin cements were used (DuoLink, Panavia F 2.0, Variolink II and Enforce). The extent of polymerization of the resin cements cured under different conditions was measured using a (1)H Stray-Field MRI method, which also enabled to probe molecular mobility in the kHz frequency range. Results. Resin cements show well distinct behaviours concerning chemical cure. Immediate photo-activation appears to be the best choice for higher filler loaded resin cements (Panavia F 2.0 and Variolink). A photo-activation delay (5 min) did not induce any significant difference in the extent of polymerization of all cements. Significance. The extent of polymerization of dual-cured resin cements considerably changed among products under various curing protocols. A 41-year-old man with cleft palate presented with a wide dehiscence and missing teeth. Six implants had been placed for fabrication of an overdenture, which was unsatisfactory. A bar was waxed and cast for connection to the implants; precision attachments were placed laterally for retention. A fixed partial denture was fabricated, and milled crowns were fabricated at the molar region to provide a guiding plane for insertion of a removable palatal obturator. Good swallowing and speech outcomes were achieved. This technique provided functional and esthetic benefits, enhanced oral hygiene, and improved the psychological condition of the patient.

An interdisciplinary approach is often the best option for achieving a predictable outcome for an adult patient with complex clinical problems. This case report demonstrates the combined periodontal/orthodontic treatment for a 49-year-old woman presenting with a Class II Division 1 malocclusion with moderate maxillary anterior crowding, a 9-mm overjet, and moderate to severe bone loss as the main characteristics of the periodontal disease. The orthodontic treatment included 2 maxillary first premolar extractions through forced extrusion. Active orthodontic treatment was completed in 30 months. The treatment outcomes, including the periodontal condition, were stable 17 months after active orthodontic treatment. The advantages of this interdisciplinary approach are discussed. Periodontally compromised orthodontic patients can be satisfactorily treated, achieving most of the conventional orthodontic goals, if a combined orthodontic/periodontic approach is used. Objectives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of light-curing protocol on degree of conversion (DC), volume contraction (C), elastic modulus (E), and glass transition temperature (T(g)) as measured on a model polymer. It was a further aim to correlate the measured values with each other. Methods. Different light-curing protocols were used in order to investigate the influence of energy density (ED), power density (PD), and mode of cure on the properties. The modes of cure were continuous, pulse-delay, and stepped irradiation. DC was measured by Raman micro-spectroscopy. C was determined by pycnometry and a density column. E was measured by a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA), and T(g) was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Data were submitted to two-and three-way ANOVA, and linear regression analyses. Results. ED, PD, and mode of cure influenced DC, C, E, and T(g) of the polymer. A significant positive correlation was found between ED and DC (r = 0.58), ED and E (r = 0.51), and ED and T(g) (r = 0.44). Taken together, ED and PD were significantly related to DC and E. The regression coefficient was positive for ED and negative for PD. Significant positive correlations were detected between DC and C (r = 0.54), DC and E (r = 0.61), and DC and T(g) (r = 0.53). Comparisons between continuous and pulse-delay modes of cure showed significant influence of mode of cure: pulse-delay curing resulted in decreased DC, decreased C, and decreased T(g). Influence of mode of cure, when comparing continuous and step modes of cure, was more ambiguous. A complex relationship exists between curing protocol, microstructure of the resin and the investigated properties. The overall performance of a composite is thus indirectly affected by the curing protocol adopted, and the desired reduction of C may be in fact a consequence of the decrease in DC. By exhibiting a violation of a novel form of the Bell-CHSH inequality, Żukowski has recently established that the quantum correlations exploited in the standard perfect teleportation protocol cannot be recovered by any local hidden variables model. In the case of imperfect teleportation, we show that a violation of a generalized form of Żukowski's teleportation inequality can only occur if the channel state, considered by itself, already violates a Bell-CHSH inequality. On the other hand, the fact that the channel state violates a Bell-CHSH inequality is not sufficient to imply a violation of Żukowski's teleportation inequality (or any of its generalizations). The implication does hold, however, if the fidelity of the teleportation exceeds ≈ 0.90. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) populations in eastern Australia are threatened by land clearing for agricultural and urban development. At the same time, conservation efforts are hindered by a dearth of information about inland populations. Faecal deposits offer a source of information that is readily available and easily collected non-invasively. We detail a faecal pellet sampling protocol that was developed for use in a large rangeland biogeographic region. The method samples trees in belt transects, uses a thorough search at the tree base to quickly identify trees with koala pellets under them, then estimates the abundance of faecal pellets under those trees using 1-m(2) quadrats. There was a strong linear relationship between these estimates and a complete enumeration of pellet abundance under the same trees. We evaluated the accuracy of our method in detecting trees where pellets were present by means of a misclassification index that was weighed more heavily for missed trees that had high numbers of pellets under them. This showed acceptable accuracy in all landforms except riverine, where some trees with large numbers of pellets were missed. Here, accuracy in detecting pellet presence was improved by sampling with quadrats, rather than basal searches. Finally, we developed a method to reliably age pellets and demonstrate how this protocol could be used with the faecal-standing-crop method to derive a regional estimate of absolute koala abundance.

A successful embryo-rescue and culture protocol was developed for use with several indigenous Vigna species and mungbean cultivars grown in Australia. Germination of Vigna immature embryos and their subsequent development into plants was influenced by the time at which the embryos were isolated and by which medium additives were placed in the embryo-rescue medium. A medium containing MS basal nutrients with sucrose (88 mM), casein hydrolysate (500 mg L-1) and agar (8 g L-1) but devoid of plant-growth regulators was found to be the best for germination of immature embryos for all four Vigna species investigated. The protocol for successful germination of non-hybrid immature embryos was applied to the recovery of interspecific hybrids involving mungbean and five native Vigna species that had previously been found difficult to hybridise. Several putative hybrid plants were obtained including a confirmed interspecific cross between V. luteola (Jacq.) Benth and V. marina (Burm.) Merrill.

The UN Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety adopted in Montreal, 29 January, 2000 and opened for signature in Nairobi, 15-26 May, 2000 will exert a profound effect on international trade in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their products. In this paper, the potential effects of various articles of the Protocol on international trade in GMOs are analyzed. Based on the present status of imports of GMOs and domestic research and development of biotechnology in China, likely trends in imports of foreign GM food and related products after China accedes to WTO is explored. Also, China's potential countermeasures to control and regulate imports of GMOs in line with implementation of the Protocol are discussed. China, in recent times, has increased its food and agricultural imports substantially from USA and Canada. China imported soybean 10.42 mill. tons in 2000 and about 15 mill tons in 2001, of which majority are from USA where GM soybean accounts for 60%. The plantation of US Monsanto's transgenic Bt cotton was increased to more than 1 million ha in China in 2001. Though China has paid great attention to develop biotechnology, it appears to have little scope to export GMOs and GM products. So China may consider a range of administrative measures to implement the Cartagena Protocol and to regulate its import of GMOs and GM agricultural products. Consequently, the Regulation on Safety of Agri-GMOs was issued on June, 2001 and followed three detailed rules issued in Jan. of 2002, with a priority to limit foreign GMOs importing by safety certification and labeling system. These were outlined taking into account policies adopted in Western countries such as green barriers to international trade.

A rapid and reliable polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based protocol was developed for detecting zygosity of the 1BL/1RS translocation in hexaploid wheat. The protocol involved a multiplex PCR with 2 pairs of oligonucleotide primers, rye-specific Ris-1 primers, and consensus 5S intergenic spacer (IGS) primers, and digestion of the PCR products with the restriction enzyme, MseI. A small piece of alkali-treated intact leaf tissue is used as a template for the PCR, thereby eliminating the necessity for DNA extraction. The test is simple, highly sensitive, and rapid compared with the other detection systems of 1BS1RS heterozygotes in hexaploid wheat. PCR results were confirmed with AFLP analyses. Diagnostic tests for 1BL/1RS translocation based on Sec-1-specific ELISA, screening for chromosome arm 1RS controlled rust resistance locus Yr9, and the PCR test differed in their ability to detect heterozygotes. The PCR test and rust test detected more heterozygotes than the ELISA test. The PCR test is being used to facilitate S1 family recurrent selection in the Germplasm Enhancement Program of the Australian Northern Wheat Improvement Program. A combination of the PCR zygosity test with other markers currently being implemented in the breeding program makes this test economical for 1BL/1RS characterisation of S1 families.
