Development of a Sensorimotor Algorithm Able to Deal with Unforeseen Pushes and Its Implementation Based on VHDL is the title of my thesis which concludes my Bachelor Degree in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería y Sistemas de Telecomunicación of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. It encloses the overall work I did in the Neurorobotics Research Laboratory from the Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin during my ERASMUS year in 2015. This thesis is focused on the field of robotics, specifically an electronic circuit called Cognitive Sensorimotor Loop (CSL) and its control algorithm based on VHDL hardware description language. The reason that makes the CSL special resides in its ability to operate a motor both as a sensor and an actuator. This way, it is possible to achieve a balanced position in any of the robot joints (e.g. the robot manages to stand) without needing any conventional sensor. In other words, the back electromotive force (EMF) induced by the motor coils is measured and the control algorithm responds depending on its magnitude. The CSL circuit contains mainly an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a driver. The ADC consists on a delta-sigma modulation which generates a series of bits with a certain percentage of 1's and 0's, proportional to the back EMF. The control algorithm, running in a FPGA, processes the bit frame and outputs a signal for the driver. This driver, which has an H bridge topology, gives the motor the ability to rotate in both directions while it's supplied with the power needed. The objective of this thesis is to document the experiments and overall work done on push ignoring contractive sensorimotor algorithms, meaning sensorimotor algorithms that ignore large magnitude forces (compared to gravity) applied in a short time interval on a pendulum system. This main objective is divided in two sub-objectives: (1) developing a system based on parameterized thresholds and (2) developing a system based on a push bypassing filter. System (1) contains a module that outputs a signal which blocks the main Sensorimotor algorithm when a push is detected. This module has several different parameters as inputs e.g. the back EMF increment to consider a force as a push or the time interval between samples. System (2) consists on a low-pass Infinite Impulse Response digital filter. It cuts any frequency considered faster than a certain push oscillation. This filter required an intensive study on how to implement some functions and data types (fixed or floating point data) not supported by standard VHDL packages. Once this was achieved, the next challenge was to simplify the solution as much as possible, without using non-official user made packages. Both systems behaved with a series of interesting advantages and disadvantages for the elaboration of the document. Stability, reaction time, simplicity or computational load are one of the many factors to be studied in the designed systems. RESUMEN. En él se documenta el trabajo de investigación que realicé en el Neurorobotics Research Laboratory de la Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin durante el año 2015 mediante el programa de intercambio ERASMUS. Este PFG se centra en el campo de la robótica y en concreto en un circuito electrónico llamado Cognitive Sensorimotor Loop (CSL) y su algoritmo de control basado en lenguaje de modelado hardware VHDL. La particularidad del CSL reside en que se consigue que un motor haga las veces tanto de sensor como de actuador. De esta manera es posible que las articulaciones de un robot alcancen una posición de equilibrio (p.ej. el robot se coloca erguido) sin la necesidad de sensores en el sentido estricto de la palabra. Es decir, se mide la propia fuerza electromotriz (FEM) inducida sobre el motor y el algoritmo responde de acuerdo a su magnitud. El circuito CSL se compone de un convertidor analógico-digital (ADC) y un driver. El ADC consiste en un modulador sigma-delta, que genera una serie de bits con un porcentaje de 1's y 0's determinado, en proporción a la magnitud de la FEM inducida. El algoritmo de control, que se ejecuta en una FPGA, procesa esta cadena de bits y genera una señal para el driver. El driver, que posee una topología en puente H, provee al motor de la potencia necesaria y le otorga la capacidad de rotar en cualquiera de las dos direcciones. El objetivo de este PFG es documentar los experimentos y en general el trabajo realizado en algoritmos Sensorimotor que puedan ignorar fuerzas de gran magnitud (en comparación con la gravedad) y aplicadas en una corta ventana de tiempo. En otras palabras, ignorar empujones conservando el comportamiento original frente a la gravedad. Para ello se han desarrollado dos sistemas: uno basado en umbrales parametrizados (1) y otro basado en un filtro de corte ajustable (2). El sistema (1) contiene un módulo que, en el caso de detectar un empujón, genera una señal que bloquea el algoritmo Sensorimotor. Este módulo recibe diferentes parámetros como el incremento necesario de la FEM para que se considere un empujón o la ventana de tiempo para que se considere la existencia de un empujón. El sistema (2) consiste en un filtro digital paso-bajo de respuesta infinita que corta cualquier variación que considere un empujón. Para crear este filtro se requirió un estudio sobre como implementar ciertas funciones y tipos de datos (coma fija o flotante) no soportados por las librerías básicas de VHDL. Tras esto, el objetivo fue simplificar al máximo la solución del problema, sin utilizar paquetes de librerías añadidos. En ambos sistemas aparecen una serie de ventajas e inconvenientes de interés para el documento. La estabilidad, el tiempo de reacción, la simplicidad o la carga computacional son algunas de las muchos factores a estudiar en los sistemas diseñados. Para concluir, también han sido documentadas algunas incorporaciones a los sistemas: una interfaz visual en VGA, un módulo que compensa el offset del ADC o la implementación de una batería de faders MIDI entre otras.

For many agronomically important plant genes, only their position on a genetic map is known. In the absence of an efficient transposon tagging system, such genes have to be isolated by map-based cloning. In bread wheat Triticum aestivum, the genome is hexaploid, has a size of 1.6 × 1010 bp, and contains more than 80% of repetitive sequences. So far, this genome complexity has not allowed chromosome walking and positional cloning. Here, we demonstrate that chromosome walking using bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones is possible in the diploid wheat Triticum monococcum (Am genome). BAC end sequences were mostly repetitive and could not be used for the first walking step. New probes corresponding to rare low-copy sequences were efficiently identified by low-pass DNA sequencing of the BACs. Two walking steps resulted in a physical contig of 450 kb on chromosome 1AmS. Genetic mapping of the probes derived from the BAC contig demonstrated perfect colinearity between the physical map of T. monococcum and the genetic map of bread wheat on chromosome 1AS. The contig genetically spans the Lr10 leaf rust disease resistance locus in bread wheat, with 0.13 centimorgans corresponding to 300 kb between the closest flanking markers. Comparison of the genetic to physical distances has shown large variations within 350 kb of the contig. The physical contig can now be used for the isolation of the orthologous regions in bread wheat. Thus, subgenome chromosome walking in wheat can produce large physical contigs and saturate genomic regions to support positional cloning.

Esse trabalho de pesquisa apresenta um estudo detalhado sobre guias de ondas integrados ao substrato (SIW) operando em frequências de micro-ondas com base na teoria de guias de ondas retangulares (RWG). O estudo sobre guias SIW associa equações apresentadas na literatura e utiliza simulações eletromagnéticas para desenvolver um procedimento de projeto bem definido. É considerada a integração entre guias SIW e linhas de transmissão de microfita, projetando-se transições entre essas duas estruturas com o propósito de prover casamento de impedância e de viabilizar a caracterização em frequências de micro-ondas. São apresentadas considerações sobre processos de fabricação de circuitos SIW em substratos constituídos por laminados de alta frequência. Uma vez estabelecidos os procedimentos de fabricação e os critérios de projeto, a tecnologia SIW é aplicada ao projeto de três guias de ondas SIW nas bandas S e X, que foram fabricados empregando laminados de alta-frequência. Foram projetados dois filtros SIW passa-faixa empregando cavidades ressonantes e postes metálicos indutivos. Os dois filtros operam na frequência central de 10,61 GHz, sendo que um deles tem banda de passagem de 7,5%e é de 3ª ordem e o outro filtro tem banda de passagem de 15%, sendo de 5ª ordem. Foram realizadas comparações entre o desempenho simulado e experimental das estruturas SIW projetadas. Os resultados de simulações eletromagnéticas e experimentais demonstraram boa concordância. Os projetos em tecnologia SIW apresentados neste trabalho de pesquisa possuem perdas de retorno melhores que 10 dB na banda de operação e perdas por inserção de 1,0 dB a 1,5 dB. É apresentada a análise da sensibilidade do desempenho dos guias de ondas e filtros SIW projetados a desvios dimensionais típicos do processo de fabricação por microfresagem mecânica. Com os resultados experimentais e de simulação foi possível validar os procedimentos de projeto e de fabricação de circuitos SIW operando em frequências de micro-ondas.

A ciência na qual se estuda a deformação de um fluido no qual é aplicada uma tensão de cisalhamento é conhecida como reologia e o equipamento utilizado para a realização dos ensaios é chamado de reômetro. Devido a impraticabilidade de uso de reômetros comerciais, diversos pesquisadores desenvolveram reômetros capazes de analisar suspensões de macropartículas, baseados nos mesmos princípios de funcionamento dos equipamentos já existentes. Em alguns casos, a medição do torque do motor é realizada pela aquisição da tensão, uma vez que esta é proporcional ao torque. Entretanto, para melhor compreensão do resultado e para evitar a possibilidade de conclusões precipitadas, vê-se necessária correta interpretação do sinal elétrico, precisando avaliar qual frequência do sinal é relevante para o ensaio e, também, qual a melhor taxa de amostragem. Além da aquisição, para que o ensaio reológico seja realizado com precisão, é indispensável ótimo controle da taxa ou tensão do motor e uma alternativa é a utilização de um servomotor e um servoconversor. No caso desse ser comercial é essencial saber configurá-lo. Para facilitar o usuário leigo, alguns pesquisadores desenvolveram softwares para controle do equipamento e análise dos dados. Assim, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo propor uma metodologia para compreender o sinal aquisitado de um reômetro servo controlado e desenvolvimento do software de análise para o tratamento dos dados obtidos a partir de ensaios reológicos. Verificou-se a melhor configuração do servocontrolador, a melhor taxa de amostragem, de no mínimo 20 amostras/segundo, e, também, desenvolveu-se um filtro digital passa-baixa do tipo FIR para remover a frequência indesejada. Além disso, foi desenvolvido um software utilizando uma rotina em Matlab e uma interface gráfica do usuário (Graphical User Interface - GUI), para o pós-processamento dos dados para auxiliar o usuário leigo no tratamento e interpretação do resultado, que se mostrou eficaz.

Using video refraction accommodative and convergence dynamic responses were measured to stepped changes in convergence stimuli with unchanged accommodative stimuli (conflicting stereoscopic image) and compared with responses to non-conflicting target stimuli. Three targets were used that varied in their spatial frequency components. An accommodative transient overshoot was evident in four out of seven subjects for only conflicting stimuli. One showed accommodative and convergence oscillation probably due to difficulty in fusing the stereoscopic target when it had a higher spatial component, however, this oscillation diminished when the target was spatial low-pass filtered. We hypothesise that transient responses to step stimuli is initiated by convergence-driven accommodation and subsequently followed by slower fine-control of accommodation modulated by the amount of blur. Inter-subject differences in convergence-driven accommodation may also be a factor to consider. For stereoscopic stimuli, it is proposed that the increase in blur immediately after the onset of the accommodative response inhibits cessation of the response.

The aim of this letter is to demonstrate that complete removal of spectral aliasing occurring due to finite numerical bandwidth used in the split-step Fourier simulations of nonlinear interactions of optical waves can be achieved by enlarging each dimension of the spectral domain by a factor (n+1)/2, where n is the number of interacting waves. Alternatively, when using low-pass filtering for dealiasing this amounts to the need for filtering a 2/(n+1) fraction of each spectral dimension.

The authors studied the influence of canonical orientation on visual search for object orientation. Displays consisted of pictures of animals whose axis of elongation was either vertical or tilted in their canonical orientation. Target orientation could be either congruent or incongruent with the object's canonical orientation. In Experiment 1, vertical canonical targets were detected faster when they were tilted (incongruent) than when they were vertical (congruent). This search asymmetry was reversed for tilted canonical targets. The effect of canonical orientation was partially preserved when objects were high-pass filtered, but it was eliminated when they were low-pass filtered, rendering them as unfamiliar shapes (Experiment 2). The effect of canonical orientation was also eliminated by inverting the objects (Experiment 3) and in a patient with visual agnosia (Experiment 4). These results indicate that orientation search with familiar objects can be modulated by canonical orientation, and they indicate a top-down influence on orientation processing. The thesis will show how to equalise the effect of quantal noise across spatial frequencies by keeping the retinal flux (If-2) constant. In addition, quantal noise is used to study the effect of grating area and spatial frequency on contrast sensitivity resulting in the extension of the new contrast detection model describing the human contrast detection system as a simple image processor. According to the model the human contrast detection system comprises low-pass filtering due to ocular optics, addition of light dependent noise at the event of quantal absorption, high-pass filtering due to the neural visual pathways, addition of internal neural noise, after which detection takes place by a local matched filter, whose sampling efficiency decreases as grating area is increased. Furthermore, this work will demonstrate how to extract both the optical and neural modulation transfer functions of the human eye. The neural transfer function is found to be proportional to spatial frequency up to the local cut-off frequency at eccentricities of 0 - 37 deg across the visual field. The optical transfer function of the human eye is proposed to be more affected by the Stiles-Crawford -effect than generally assumed in the literature. Similarly, this work questions the prevailing ideas about the factors limiting peripheral vision by showing that peripheral optical acts as a low-pass filter in normal viewing conditions, and therefore the effect of peripheral optics is worse than generally assumed.

This thesis studied the effect of (i) the number of grating components and (ii) parameter randomisation on root-mean-square (r.m.s.) contrast sensitivity and spatial integration. The effectiveness of spatial integration without external spatial noise depended on the number of equally spaced orientation components in the sum of gratings. The critical area marking the saturation of spatial integration was found to decrease when the number of components increased from 1 to 5-6 but increased again at 8-16 components. The critical area behaved similarly as a function of the number of grating components when stimuli consisted of 3, 6 or 16 components with different orientations and/or phases embedded in spatial noise. Spatial integration seemed to depend on the global Fourier structure of the stimulus. Spatial integration was similar for sums of two vertical cosine or sine gratings with various Michelson contrasts in noise. The critical area for a grating sum was found to be a sum of logarithmic critical areas for the component gratings weighted by their relative Michelson contrasts. The human visual system was modelled as a simple image processor where the visual stimuli is first low-pass filtered by the optical modulation transfer function of the human eye and secondly high-pass filtered, up to the spatial cut-off frequency determined by the lowest neural sampling density, by the neural modulation transfer function of the visual pathways. The internal noise is then added before signal interpretation occurs in the brain. The detection is mediated by a local spatially windowed matched filter. The model was extended to include complex stimuli and its applicability to the data was found to be successful. The shape of spatial integration function was similar for non-randomised and randomised simple and complex gratings. However, orientation and/or phase randomised reduced r.m.s contrast sensitivity by a factor of 2. The effect of parameter randomisation on spatial integration was modelled under the assumption that human observers change the observer strategy from cross-correlation (i.e., a matched filter) to auto-correlation detection when uncertainty is introduced to the task. The model described the data accurately.

A range of physical and engineering systems exhibit an irregular complex dynamics featuring alternation of quiet and burst time intervals called the intermittency. The intermittent dynamics most popular in laser science is the on-off intermittency [1]. The on-off intermittency can be understood as a conversion of the noise in a system close to an instability threshold into effective time-dependent fluctuations which result in the alternation of stable and unstable periods. The on-off intermittency has been recently demonstrated in semiconductor, Erbium doped and Raman lasers [2-5]. Recently demonstrated random distributed feedback (random DFB) fiber laser has an irregular dynamics near the generation threshold [6,7]. Here we show the intermittency in the cascaded random DFB fiber laser. We study intensity fluctuations in a random DFB fiber laser based on nitrogen doped fiber. The laser generates first and second Stokes components 1120 nm and 1180 nm respectively under an appropriate pumping. We study the intermittency in the radiation of the second Stokes wave. The typical time trace near the generation threshold of the second Stokes wave (Pth) is shown at Fig. 1a. From the number of long enough time-traces we calculate statistical distribution between major spikes in time dynamics, Fig. 1b. To eliminate contribution of high frequency components of spikes we use a low pass filter along with the reference value of the output power. Experimental data is fitted by power law,

Site 1103 was one of a transect of three sites drilled across the Antarctic Peninsula continental shelf during Leg 178. The aim of drilling on the shelf was to determine the age of the sedimentary sequences and to ground truth previous interpretations of the depositional environment (i.e., topsets and foresets) of progradational seismostratigraphic sequences S1, S2, S3, and S4. The ultimate objective was to obtain a better understanding of the history of glacial advances and retreats in this west Antarctic margin. Drilling the topsets of the progradational wedge (0-247 m below seafloor [mbsf]), which consist of unsorted and unconsolidated materials of seismic Unit S1, was very unfavorable, resulting in very low (2.3%) core recovery. Recovery improved (34%) below 247 mbsf, corresponding to sediments of seismic Unit S3, which have a consolidated matrix. Logs were only obtained from the interval between 75 and 244 mbsf, and inconsistencies on the automatic analog picking of the signals received from the sonic log at the array and at the two other receivers prevented accurate shipboard time-depth conversions. This, in turn, limited the capacity for making seismic stratigraphic interpretations at this site and regionally. This study is an attempt to compile all available data sources, perform quality checks, and introduce nonstandard processing techniques for the logging data obtained to arrive at a reliable and continuous depth vs. velocity profile. We defined 13 data categories using differential traveltime information. Polynomial exclusion techniques with various orders and low-pass filtering reduced the noise of the initial data pool and produced a definite velocity depth profile that is synchronous with the resistivity logging data. A comparison of the velocity profile produced with various other logs of Site 1103 further validates the presented data. All major logging units are expressed within the new velocity data. A depth-migrated section with the new velocity data is presented together with the original time section and initial depth estimates published within the Leg 178 Initial Reports volume. The presented data confirms the location of the shelf unconformity at 222 ms two-way traveltime (TWT), or 243 mbsf, and allows its seismic identification as a strong negative and subsequent positive reflection.

Here we use two filtered speech tasks to investigate children’s processing of slow (<4 Hz) versus faster (∼33 Hz) temporal modulations in speech. We compare groups of children with either developmental dyslexia (Experiment 1) or speech and language impairments (SLIs, Experiment 2) to groups of typically-developing (TD) children age-matched to each disorder group. Ten nursery rhymes were filtered so that their modulation frequencies were either low-pass filtered (<4 Hz) or band-pass filtered (22 – 40 Hz). Recognition of the filtered nursery rhymes was tested in a picture recognition multiple choice paradigm. Children with dyslexia aged 10 years showed equivalent recognition overall to TD controls for both the low-pass and band-pass filtered stimuli, but showed significantly impaired acoustic learning during the experiment from low-pass filtered targets. Children with oral SLIs aged 9 years showed significantly poorer recognition of band pass filtered targets compared to their TD controls, and showed comparable acoustic learning effects to TD children during the experiment. The SLI samples were also divided into children with and without phonological difficulties. The children with both SLI and phonological difficulties were impaired in recognizing both kinds of filtered speech. These data are suggestive of impaired temporal sampling of the speech signal at different modulation rates by children with different kinds of developmental language disorder. Both SLI and dyslexic samples showed impaired discrimination of amplitude rise times. Implications of these findings for a temporal sampling framework for understanding developmental language disorders are discussed.

In the study of the spatial characteristics of the visual channels, the power spectrum model of visual masking is one of the most widely used. When the task is to detect a signal masked by visual noise, this classical model assumes that the signal and the noise are previously processed by a bank of linear channels and that the power of the signal at threshold is proportional to the power of the noise passing through the visual channel that mediates detection. The model also assumes that this visual channel will have the highest ratio of signal power to noise power at its output. According to this, there are masking conditions where the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) occurs in a channel centered in a spatial frequency different from the spatial frequency of the signal (off-frequency looking). Under these conditions the channel mediating detection could vary with the type of noise used in the masking experiment and this could affect the estimation of the shape and the bandwidth of the visual channels. It is generally believed that notched noise, white noise and double bandpass noise prevent off-frequency looking, and high-pass, low-pass and bandpass noises can promote it independently of the channel's shape. In this study, by means of a procedure that finds the channel that maximizes the SNR at its output, we performed numerical simulations using the power spectrum model to study the characteristics of masking caused by six types of one-dimensional noise (white, high-pass, low-pass, bandpass, notched, and double bandpass) for two types of channel's shape (symmetric and asymmetric). Our simulations confirm that (1) high-pass, low-pass, and bandpass noises do not prevent the off-frequency looking, (2) white noise satisfactorily prevents the off-frequency looking independently of the shape and bandwidth of the visual channel, and interestingly we proved for the first time that (3) notched and double bandpass noises prevent off-frequency looking only when the noise cutoffs around the spatial frequency of the signal match the shape of the visual channel (symmetric or asymmetric) involved in the detection. In order to test the explanatory power of the model with empirical data, we performed six visual masking experiments. We show that this model, with only two free parameters, fits the empirical masking data with high precision. Finally, we provide equations of the power spectrum model for six masking noises used in the simulations and in the experiments.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is a severe malignancy in terms of prognosis and mortality rate. Because its great genetic heterogeneity, disputes regarding classification, prevention and treatments are still unsolved. AIM: We investigated intra- and inter-EAC heterogeneity by defining EAC’s somatic mutational profile and the role of candidate microRNAs, to correlate the molecular profile of tumors to clinical outcomes and to identify biomarkers for classification. METHODS: 38 EAC cases were analyzed via high-throughput cell sorting technology combined with targeted sequencing and whole genome low-pass sequencing. Targeted sequencing of further 169 cases was performed to widen the study. miR221 and miR483-3p expression was profiled via qPCR in 112 EACs and correlation with clinical outcomes was investigated. RESULTS: 35/38 EACs carried at least one somatic mutation absent in stromal cells. TP53 was found mutated in 73.7% of cases. Selective sorting revealed tumor subclones with different mutational loads and copy number alterations, confirming the high intra-tumor heterogeneity of EAC. Mutations were in most cases at homozygous state, and we identified alterations that were missed with the whole-tumor analysis. Mutations in HNF1A gene, not previously associated with EAC, were identified in both cohorts. Higher expression of miR483-3p and miR221 was associated with poorer cancer specific survival (P=0.0293 and P=0.0059), and recurrence in the Lauren intestinal subtype (P=0.0459 and P=0.0002). Median expression levels of miRNAs were higher in patients with advanced tumor stages. The loss of SMAD4 immunoreactivity was significantly associated with poorer cancer specific survival and recurrence (P=0.0452; P=0.022 respectively). CONCLUSION: Combining selective sorting technology and next generation sequencing allowed to better define EAC inter- and intra-tumor heterogeneity. We identified HNF1A as a new mutated gene associated to EAC that could be involved in tumor progression and promising biomarkers such as SMAD4, miR221 and miR483-3p to identify patients at higher risk for more aggressive tumors.

Therapeutic approaches to chronic actinic cheilitis focus on the removal or destruction of diseased epithelium. The CO(2) laser has become an important therapeutic alternative, achieving clinical resolution in around 90% of patients. Although many laser physical parameters have been reported, some are known for their low potential for scar induction without compromising the success of the results. The aim of this clinicohistological study was to compare the therapeutic responses to two low-morbidity protocols involving a single laser pass. A total of 40 patients with chronic multicentric and microscopically proven disease were randomly submitted to two conservative CO(2) laser protocols using a bilateral comparative model. The degree of histological atypia of the epithelium was determined in 26 patients both pre- and postoperatively for both protocols. Other histological phenomena were assessed in addition to this central analysis parameter. Clinical recurrence occurred in 12.5% of patients for each protocol, together with a significant reduction in the degree of epithelial atypia (p < 0.001), which was occasionally complete. However, no difference was found between the protocols (p > 0.05). Using these morphological parameters it was not possible to determine whether postoperative epithelial atypias in part of the sample were reactive or residual in nature. A few patients may show minor postoperative lesions. Due to their potential to achieve clinical and importantly microscopic resolution, the studied protocols may be used for mild through moderate dysplastic epithelium and clinically diffuse disease.
