Leaks in pipes are a common issue encountered in the water industry. Acoustic methods are generally successful in finding and locating leaks in metallic pipes, however, they are less effective when applied to plastic pipes. This is because leak-noise signals are heavily attenuated due to high damping in the pipe-wall and sound radiation into the soil. As result, high frequency leak noise does not travel long distances. To determine how far leak noise may travel in a pipe at any frequency, the attenuation of the wave responsible for leak noise propagation should be known. In this paper a new method to estimate this is described. The method is then applied to some measurements made on a bespoke pipe-test rig in the UK, and the results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Because the routine use of frozen semen has some limitation that don´t permit its use in a large-scale, it is necessary to use the cooled semen. The equine cooled semen is normally used to enable that a genetic material with high quality be spread over long distances. When it reaches the temperature of refrigeration, the sperm metabolic activity decreases and the free radicals formation minimize. These ones cause irreversible damages to the sperm cells and, so, its lower formation is very advantageous. However, when we manipulate the semen using conservation techniques, like refrigeration, it is necessary to be aware about the sperm characteristics and fragilities, because, if performed erroneously, this technique can be harmful to the sperm function as well as to the time of sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction. It is necessary that cooling rate is slow and that the time and the storage temperature of the sperm obey the ranges that are already established. Moreover, we should make use of diluents and obtain the ideal sperm dilution, so that its use can be optimized. It´s also important to emphasize that to obtain good fertility rates, the semen, after processed (collected and diluted) must be conditioned in recipients specially developed for this purpose

Pipelines are linear engineering works, designed mostly for transporting oil and its derivatives for long distances, furnishing even the farthermost zones of the country. Due to oil sector needs to ensure for the safety and conservation of its properties, several geotechnical studies are being held at the pipelines field, in order to preserve this important transportation, and also to prevent accidents, which might seriously compromise the environment and the population who lives around it. The OSBRA pipeline, who connects the city of Paulínia to the capital Brasília, is one of these engineering works that deserves to be pointed out. This research, performed at the Ribeirão da Prata Basin, was a pilot study conducted with the main objective of testing the current methodology efficiency, for future applications in the closest watersheds to the OSBRA pipeline. The objective of this research is to analyze flood wave and debris flow processes in a non-fictional watershed, by comparing two different kinds of methods: the first one based on simulation models (software ‘ABC 6’), and the other one by flood wave and debris flow susceptibility mapping. The results from the hydrological modeling were both hydrographs and ietographs that estimated values of outputs and infiltration. To construct the susceptibility maps were necessary three other maps: ground use and occupation maps, divided according to the different protection degrees that were offered to the ground; maps of dam locations in the area and physiographic compartimentation maps, divided according to the local geology. To complete the methodology, the results were collected from both methods for comparison. The obtained product for this methodology was series of data whose different susceptibility degrees to flood wave and debris flow could define the safest route for a pipeline crossing in this watershed...

The highway wanderers are aimless individuals who walk long distances on foot carrying their meager belongings in a sack on their backs and when are in hardness situations appeal to the help institutions. This paper aims to verify how the help workers understand the highway wanderers way of life. The research was conducted in four assistance institutions in the State of São Paulo (two publics and two philanthropics). The reports were analyzed using the content analysis. The results indicated that comprehension of these help workers about the highway wanderers is related to vagabondage, mental illness and family disaggregation. The data show us the necessity of an ample discussion around these help policies and its impacts in the wandering of highway wanderers.

In water distribution systems, old metallic pipes have been replaced by plastic pipes due to their deterioration over time. Although acoustic methods are effective in finding leaks in metallic pipes, they have been found to be problematic when applied to plastic pipes due to the high damping within the pipe wall and the surrounding medium. This is responsible for the leak signal not traveling long distances. Moreover, the leak energy in plastic pipes is generally located at a narrow frequency range located at low frequencies. However, the presence of resonances can narrow even more this frequency range. In order to minimise the influence of background noise and resonances on the calculation of the time delay estimate, band-pass filters are often used to supress undesirable frequency components of the noise. The objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of resonances in the pipe system (pipe, valves, connections and hydrants), on the time delay estimate calculated using acoustic signals. Analytical models and actual leak data collected in a bespoke rig located in the United Kingdom are used to investigate this feature.
