According to Declan Kiberd, “postcolonial writing does not begin only when the occupier withdraws: rather it is initiated at that very moment when a native writer formulates a text committed to cultural resistance.” The Irish in Latin America – a continent emerging from indigenous cultures, colonisation, and migrations – may be regarded as colonised in Ireland and as colonisers in their new home. They are a counterexample to the standard pattern of identities in the major English-speaking destinations of the Irish Diaspora. Using literary sources, the press, correspondence, music, sports, and other cultural representations, in this thesis I search the attitudes and shared values signifying identities among the immigrants and their families. Their fragmentary and wide-ranging cultures provide a rich context to study the protean process of adaptation to, or rejection of, the new countries. Evolving from oppressed to oppressors, the Irish in Latin America swiftly became ingleses. Subsequently, in order to join the local middle classes they became vaqueros, llaneros, huasos, and gauchos so they could show signs of their effective integration to the native culture, as seen by the Latin American elites. Eventually, some Irish groups separated from the English mainstream culture and shaped their own community negotiating among Irishness, Englishness, and local identities in Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, Cuba, and other places in the region. These identities were not only unmoored in the emigrants’ minds but also manoeuvred by the political needs of community and religious leaders. After reviewing the major steps and patterns of Irish migration to Latin America, the thesis analyses texts from selected works, offers a version of how the settlers became Latin Americans or not, and elucidates the processes by which a new Irish-Latin American hybrid was created.

A citation analysis was carried out on the most important research journals in the field of Catalan literature between 1974 and 2003. The indicators and qualitative parameters obtained show the value of performing citation analysis in cultural and linguistic areas that are poorly covered by the A&HCI. Catalan literature shows a similar pattern to that of humanities in general, but it could still be in a stage of consolidation because too little work has as yet been published.

In adult macaque monkeys subjected to an incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI), corticospinal (CS) fibers are rarely observed to grow in the lesion territory. This situation is little affected by the application of an anti-Nogo-A antibody which otherwise fosters the growth of CS fibers rostrally and caudally to the lesion. However, when using the Sternberger monoclonal-incorporated antibody 32 (SMI-32), a marker detecting a non-phosphorylated neurofilament epitope, numerous SMI-32-positive (+) fibers were observed in the spinal lesion territory of 18 adult macaque monkeys; eight of these animals had received a control antibody infusion intrathecally for 1month after the injury, five animals an anti-Nogo-A antibody, and five animals received an anti-Nogo-A antibody together with brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These fibers occupied the whole dorso-ventral axis of the lesion site with a tendency to accumulate on the ventral side, and their trajectories were erratic. Most of these fibers (about 87%) were larger than 1.3μm and densely SMI-32 (+) stained. In the undamaged spinal tissue, motoneurons form the only large population of SMI-32 (+) neurons which are densely stained and have large diameter axons. These data therefore suggest that a sizeable proportion of the fibers seen in the lesion territory originate from motoneurons, although fibers of other origins could also contribute. Neither the presence of the antibody neutralizing Nogo-A alone, nor the presence of the antibody neutralizing Nogo-A combined with BDNF influenced the number or the length of the SMI-32 (+) fibers in the spinal lesion area. In summary, our data show that after a spinal cord lesion in adult monkeys, the lesion site is colonized by fibers, a large portion of which presumably originate from motoneurons.

The distribution of distances from atoms of a particular element E to a probe atom X (oxygen in most cases), both bonded and intermolecular non-bonded contacts, has been analyzed. In general, the distribution is characterized by a maximum at short EX distances corresponding to chemical bonds, followed by a range of unpopulated distances the van der Waals gap and a second maximum at longer distances the van der Waals peak superimposed on a random distribution function that roughly follows a d3 dependence. The analysis of more than five million interatomic"non-bonded" distances has led to the proposal of a consistent set of van der Waals radii for most naturally occurring elements, and its applicability to other element pairs has been tested for a set of more than three million data, all of them compared to over one million bond distances.

Nest and territory defence are risky and potentially dangerous behaviours. If the resolution of life history trade-offs differs between individuals, the level of defence may also vary among individuals. Because melanin-based colour traits can be associated with life history strategies, differently coloured individuals may display different nest and territory defence strategies. We investigated this issue in the colour polymorphic tawny owl (Strix aluco) for which plumage varies from dark to light reddish melanic. Accordingly, we found that (1) our presence induced a greater response (flying around) from dark-coloured than light-coloured females and (2) dark reddish males suffered lower nest predation rates than light-coloured males. In experimentally enlarged broods, the probability that females reacted after we played back the hoot calls of a stranger male was higher if these females were lighter reddish; the opposite pattern was found in experimentally reduced broods with dark parents being more reactive than light parents. Finally, darker females alarmed more frequently when paired with a light than with a dark male, suggesting that partners adjust their behaviour to each other. We also tested whether colouration is used as a signal by conspecifics to adjust the level of their defensive behaviour. Accordingly, breeding females responded more vigorously to a dark than a light reddish stuffed tawny owl placed beside their nest. We conclude that melanin-based colouration is a signal of alternative nest and territory defence behaviour that depends on ecological factors.
