Rolf Bernander (1956-2014): pioneer of the archaeal cell cycle.

On 19 January 2014 Rolf ('Roffe') Bernander passed away unexpectedly. Rolf was a dedicated scientist; his research aimed at unravelling the cell biology of the archaeal domain of life, especially cell cycle-related questions, but he also made important contributions in other areas of microbiology. Rolf had a professor position in the Molecular Evolution programme at Uppsala University, Sweden for about 8 years, and in January 2013 he became chair professor at the Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute at Stockholm University in Sweden. Rolf was an exceptional colleague and will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and the colleagues and co-workers that he leaves behind in the scientific community. He will be remembered for his endless enthusiasm for science, his analytical mind, and his quirky sense of humour.

Competing tunneling and capacitive paths in Co-ZrO2 granular thin films

The ac electrical response is studied in thin films composed of well-defined nanometric Co particles embedded in an insulating ZrO2 matrix which tends to coat them, preventing the formation of aggregates. In the dielectric regime, ac transport originates from the competition between interparticle capacitive Cp and tunneling Rt channels, the latter being thermally assisted. This competition yields an absorption phenomenon at a characteristic frequency 1/(RtCp), which is observed in the range 1010 000 Hz. In this way, the effective ac properties mimic the universal response of disordered dielectric materials. Temperature and frequency determine the complexity and nature of the ac electrical paths, which have been successfully modeled by an Rt-Cp network.

Educação nas leis orgânicas dos Municípios Fluminenses: pouca originalidade e muita cópia

O artigo examina as disposições educacionais nas Leis Orgânicas dos 92 municípios fluminenses e constata que elas apresentam pouca originalidade, pois são principalmente cópias das Constituições Federal e Estadual do Rio de Janeiro e de modelos fornecidos por consultorias legislativas ou partidos políticos. Observa que a maioria contém as mesmas formulações e os mesmos equívocos das Constituições e que existem as que até copiam errado artigos dos textos base, o que provavelmente não ocorreria se os vereadores tivessem elaborado as leis de maneira autônoma. Algumas Leis Orgânicas apresentam, contudo, contribuições originais, tanto positivas (aumento do percentual mínimo da receita orçamentária municipal para a educação) quanto negativas (redução desse percentual através de emendas). O estudo mostra como é frágil o exercício concreto da autonomia municipal na elaboração dessas leis em uma perspectiva democrática e como é ilusória a ideia de muitos que no âmbito local o exercício da cidadania é mais fácil

L'interès per la historiografia arrenca en el seu cas del desig de resseguir la petjada de Bosch Gimpera en l'arqueologia catalana, espanyola i internacional; aquesta feina l'ha dut a aprofundir en d'altres qüestions relacionades amb la postguerra espanyola, sobre les quals ha publicat ja documentats i interessants articles, com ara els que fan referència als batallons de presoners emprats com a mà d'obra a Empúries, la presència de significatius capitosts de Das Ahnenerbe a l'Espanya de la primera meitat dels anys 40, el paper que va tenir Bosch a la UNESCO o les depuracions del Museu Arqueològic de Barcelona.

Secular trends in height and weight among children and adolescents of the Seychelles, 1956-2006.

BACKGROUND: Height of individuals has long been considered as a significant index of nutrition and health of a population; still, there is little information regarding the trends of height and weight among developing or transitional countries. We assessed the secular trends in height and weight in children of the Seychelles, a rapidly developing island state in the Indian Ocean (African region). METHODS: Height and weight were measured in all students of all schools in four selected school grades (kindergarten, 4th, 7th and 10th grades) for the periods 1998-9 (6391 children) and 2005-6 (8582 children). Data for 1956-7 was extracted from a previously published report. RESULTS: At age 15.5 years, boys/girls were on average 10/13 cm taller and 15/9 kg heavier in 2005-6 than in 1956-7. Height increased in boys/girls by 1.62/0.93 cm/decade between 1956-7 and 1998-9 and by 1.14/1.82 cm/decade between 1998-9 and 2005-6. For weight, the linear increase in boys/girls was 1.38/1.10 kg/decade between 1956-7 and 1998-9 and 2.21/2.50 kg/decade between 1998-9 and 2005-6. Overall, the relative increase in weight between 1956-7 and 2005-6 was 5-fold higher than the relative increase in height. CONCLUSION: Height and weight increased markedly over time in children aged <16 years in the Seychelles, consistent with large changes in socio-economic and nutritional indicators in the considered 50-year interval. The markedly steeper increase in weight than height over time is consistent with an epidemic of overweight and obesity.
