BACKGROUND. Bioinformatics is commonly featured as a well assorted list of available web resources. Although diversity of services is positive in general, the proliferation of tools, their dispersion and heterogeneity complicate the integrated exploitation of such data processing capacity. RESULTS. To facilitate the construction of software clients and make integrated use of this variety of tools, we present a modular programmatic application interface (MAPI) that provides the necessary functionality for uniform representation of Web Services metadata descriptors including their management and invocation protocols of the services which they represent. This document describes the main functionality of the framework and how it can be used to facilitate the deployment of new software under a unified structure of bioinformatics Web Services. A notable feature of MAPI is the modular organization of the functionality into different modules associated with specific tasks. This means that only the modules needed for the client have to be installed, and that the module functionality can be extended without the need for re-writing the software client. CONCLUSIONS. The potential utility and versatility of the software library has been demonstrated by the implementation of several currently available clients that cover different aspects of integrated data processing, ranging from service discovery to service invocation with advanced features such as workflows composition and asynchronous services calls to multiple types of Web Services including those registered in repositories (e.g. GRID-based, SOAP, BioMOBY, R-bioconductor, and others).

Internet it is a powerful interactive communication channel with world scope, through which can be multiplied the visibility of the research of the professionals whose scientific production has a difficult diffusion by the conventionals media. It is presented an analysis of the scientific publications observed in the web in order to understand the different communication processes accomplished by the superior corps of environmental health technical of the Andalusian Health Service. Using the nominal relationship of the professionals, we used Google ‘search engine’ for all scientific publications located in the internet; we were made different bibliometric indicators as of the recovered records and was analyzed the time evolution of the scientific production, documental categories, geografic distribution, language, coauthors and institutional collaboration. It was identified a growing trend in the productivity of the publications in the last decade, mainly through communications to congresses (70.4%) and journals articles (16.9%). The publications mainly are located in spanish journals, that they are indexed on national and international databases. In all the Andalusian provinces was identified some published scientific communication. The indicator of coauthors is very high (95.77%) although the institutional participation is limited mainly to the primary attention districts, occupational centers of each professional (85.21%). The scientific publication patterns visualized in the web represent an important contribution for the knowledge of the characteristics of the environmental health professionals of the Andalusian health service, what provides avaluable information for the support of the information systems in public health.

BACKGROUND Major depression will become the second most important cause of disability in 2020. Computerized cognitive-behaviour therapy could be an efficacious and cost-effective option for its treatment. No studies on cost-effectiveness of low intensity vs self-guided psychotherapy has been carried out. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of low intensity vs self-guided psychotherapy for major depression in the Spanish health system. METHODS The study is made up of 3 phases: 1.- Development of a computerized cognitive-behaviour therapy for depression tailored to Spanish health system. 2.- Multicenter controlled, randomized study: A sample (N=450 patients) with mild/moderate depression recruited in primary care. They should have internet availability at home, not receive any previous psychological treatment, and not suffer from any other severe somatic or psychological disorder. They will be allocated to one of 3 treatments: a) Low intensity Internet-delivered psychotherapy + improved treatment as usual (ITAU) by GP, b) Self-guided Internet-delivered psychotherapy + ITAU or c) ITAU. Patients will be diagnosed with MINI psychiatric interview. Main outcome variable will be Beck Depression Inventory. It will be also administered EuroQol 5D (quality of life) and Client Service Receipt Inventory (consume of health and social services). Patients will be assessed at baseline, 3 and 12 months. An intention to treat and a per protocol analysis will be performed. DISCUSSION The comparisons between low intensity and self-guided are infrequent, and also a comparative economic evaluation between them and compared with usual treatment in primary. The strength of the study is that it is a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial of low intensity and self-guided Internet-delivered psychotherapy for depression in primary care, being the treatment completely integrated in primary care setting. Purpose: Although young males encounter sexually-related concerns, they are mostly absent from specialized services. Our objective is to assess whether the internet is used by boys to find answers to these types of problems and questions. Methods: In the context of a qualitative study assessing young males' barriers to access sexual and reproductive health facilities, we conducted two focus groups gathering 12 boys aged 17-20. Discussions were triggered through the presentation of four vignettes corresponding to questions posted by 17-20 year old boys and girls on an information website for adolescents (www.ciao.ch), concerning various sexual dysfunction situations. In order to avoid having to talk about their own experience, participants were asked what they would do in those cases. Results: In general, the internet was mentioned quite thoroughly as a means of searching for information through research engines and a place to address professionals for advice.Within the hierarchy of consultation possibilities, the internet was given the first place as a way to deal with these types of problems presenting many advantages: (1) the internet enables to maintain intimacy; (2) it is anonymous (use of a pseudo); (3) it avoids having to confront someone face-to-face with personal problems which can be embarrassing and challenging for one's pride; (4) it is free; and (5) it is accessible at all times. In other words, participants value the internet as a positive tool to avoid many barriers which prevent offline consultations to take place. Most participants consider the internet at least as a first step in trying to solve a problem; for instance, by better defining the seriousness of a problem and judging if it is worth consulting a doctor. However, despite the positive qualities of the internet, they do put forward the importance of having specialists answering questions, trustworthiness, and being followed-up by the same person. Participants suggested that a strategy to break down barriers for boys to consult in face-to-face settings is to have a consultation on the internet as a first step which could then guide the person to an in-person consultation if necessary. Conclusions: The internet as a means of obtaining information or consulting received high marks overall. Although the internet cannot replace an in-person consultation, the screen and the keyboard have the advantage of not involving a face-to-face encounter and raise the possibility of discussing sexual problems anonymously and in private. The internet tools together with other new technologies should continue to develop in a secure manner as a space providing prevention messages and to become an easy access door to sexual and reproductive health services for young men, which can then guide youths to appropriate resource persons. Ciao is a website specifically designed for young people and focuses mainly on health issues. This report presents the process of setting up the site and a first evaluation undertaken by using two self-administered questionnaires administered via the website itself. It suggests that it is possible to provide young people with authoritative health information and to facilitate their access to counseling and health care facilities by having young people use such a website.

BACKGROUND: Internet is commonly used by the general population, notably for health information-seeking. There has been little research into its use by patients treated for a psychiatric disorder. AIM: To evaluate the use of internet by patients with psychiatric disorders in searching for general and medical information. METHODS: In 2007, 319 patients followed in a university hospital psychiatric out-patient clinic, completed a 28-items self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: Two hundred patients surveyed were internet users. Most of them (68.5%) used internet in order to find health-related information. Only a small part of the patients knew and used criteria reflecting the quality of contents of the websites consulted. Knowledge of English and private Internet access were the factors significantly associated with the search of information on health on Internet. CONCLUSIONS: Internet is currently used by patients treated for psychiatric disorders, especially for medical seeking information.

O sistema educativo Cabo-verdiano é um universo constituído por escolas públicas e privadas, do nível pré-escolar ao nível do ensino superior. Dentro desse sistema nós vamos fundamentar os processos administrativos, que foca basicamente o processo de matrícula do aluno, no sistema de ensino vigente, até deixar o sistema, incluindo também o processo de emissão de certificados, visto que no acto das matrículas são requeridas certificados do ano transacto. A proposta de Integração, é a utilização do poder das tecnologias de comunicação e informação para interligar as instituições de ensino, de forma que a matricula dos alunos não seja algo cansativo com elevados processos burocráticos e custoso, para quem quer seguir os seus estudos, e também tornar a gestão do sistema mais simples. O trabalho irá focar basicamente o objecto aluno, e todos os níveis de ensino, porque o aluno é o actor no sistema, quem irá interagir (Inscrever, solicitar, transferir e ser avaliado) nos diversos níveis de ensino. O aluno passa pelos diversos sistemas, na medida que pode passar do sistema de ensino básico, para o ensino secundário ao ensino superior. Contudo o aluno será o mesmo, consequentemente a identidade do aluno será a mesma para os diversos sistemas, o que altera são as avaliações e os planos curriculares, criando um histórico do aluno. Ele tem um ciclo de vida dentro do sistema de ensino. No entanto o estudo permitiu concluir, que o sistema educativo apresenta profundas lacunas no que tange a sua infra-estrutura tecnológica, que lhes permitirá ter mais dinâmica no processo de matrícula e emissão de certificados e na troca de informação entre os estabelecimentos, há dificuldade em criar um histórico do aluno de forma automática com toda a sua avaliação durante o seu ciclo de estudo, do primário ao superior. A proposta de tecnologias de integração entre as instituições, é baseado em métodos, nomeadamente, utilizando Web Services, que é um protocolo simples, que permite a interoperabilidade entre diversos sistemas. Funciona com o protocolo HTTP/HTTPs, que pode ser configurado e acedido facilmente nos Sistemas de Informação. As tecnologias Web constituem um excelente meio de para atingir o objectivo preconizado. Utilizando-as, as escolas poderão construir um sistema (Intranet), que pode ser acedida por todos as escolas e instituições do sistema educativo, com grandes benefícios, quer em termos pedagógicos como administrativo das instituições permitindo assim a partilha das informações internas, melhorando a comunicação entre os vários intervenientes.

Els desenvolupaments tecnològics de les darreres dècades han tingut una influència directa en l'organització dels servéis tècnics de les biblioteques i en la forma com es realitzen les tasques anomenades técniques. Un dels darrers exemples d'aquest impacte es l'aprofitament de la xarxa Internet per al treball técnic. A l'article es fa una presentació selectiva dels recursos que hi ha a Internet destinats al personal dels serveis tècnics en general i al d'adquisicions i catalogació en concret. Així mateix, també es fa un repàs sumari de com s'aprofiten aquests recursos Internet en els servéis tècnics de les biblioteques universitàries catalanes. En una segona part s'analitzaran recursos Internet adequats al processament de materials concrets ¿publicacions seriades, recursos electronics, col·lecions especials, etc.

La xarxa Internet és, sens dubte, la xarxa de comunicacions més gran que existeix arreu del món. Des de fa molts anys els investigadors l'han fet servir com a mitjà d'intercanvi d'informació amb companys d'altres paísos que treballaven en línies de recerca semblants. Però Internet és molt més que un macrosistema de correu electrònic; aquests últims anys, amb la incorporació d'empreses privades de documentació i la informatització de les biblioteques, s'ha obert tot un ventall de serveis dirigits al món de la biblioteconomia i documentació. Aquests serveis es basen en la consulta interactiva d'ordinadors remots, transferència de fitxers i sistemes de correu electrònic.

Cada día millones de usuarios vuelcan sus conocimientos y experiencias en internet. Este flujo imparable de información, verdadera memoria histórica del presente, no está siendo objeto de ningún tratamiento específico, y al finalizar su vigencia desaparece o es sustituido sin más. Este artículo reflexiona sobre los peligros que corre la documentación que circula por internet desde un punto de vista archivístico, y sobre las dificultades técnicas que entraña su conservación. A continuación analiza los principales proyectos que se han puesto en marcha con la finalidad de acumular un fondo documental de internet para su conservación permanente.

Data are provided to CJJP through statistical summary forms completed by the JCSLs. Because forms are completed only when meaningful contact between a student and a liaison takes place, only a portion of the total population served is reported. Meaningful contact is defined as having at least five contacts within a 60-day period (at any point during the academic year) regarding at least one of the referral reasons supplied on the form. Data are entered into a web-based application by the liaisons and retrieved electronically by CJJP via the internet. Service information is submitted and uploaded only at the end of the academic year.

Langattomalla Internetpuhelupalvelulla tarkoitetaan Internet-puheluiden (Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP) siirtoa langattoman tiedonsiirtoverkon ylitse. Tälläisia langattomia verkkoja voivat olla esimerkiksi langattomat lähiverkot, WiMAX-verkot tai 450 megahertsin (MHz) taajuusalueella toimivat tiedonsiirtoverkot. VoIP-yhteyden toiminta voidaan jakaa kolmeen eri toiminta-alueeseen: yhteydenmuodostusprotokollaan, äänen koodaukseen sekä siirtotiehen. Yhteydenmuodostusprotokollia ovat esimerkiksi SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) sekä H.323. Yhteydenmuodostusprotokollantehtävänä on muodostaa yhteys käyttäjien välille sekä sopia yhteydessäkäytettävistä ominaisuuksista. Äänen koodauksessa ääni pakataan paketteihin, joita lähetetään siirtotietä pitkin eri käyttäjien välillä. Normaalissa Internetpuheluyhteydessä siirtotienä käytetään langallisia siirtoteitä. Tässä työssä on keskitytty langattomiin siirtoteihin ja niidentuomiin haasteisiin, kuten yhteyden luotettavuuteen ja laatuun, yhteyskapasiteetin riittävyyteen sekä siirtymiseen saman verkon eri tukiasemien sekä eri verkkojen välillä. Työssä rakennettiin yksinkertainen, mutta toimiva langaton Internetpuhelujärjestelmä sekä verrattiin sen ominaisuuksia normaaliin Internetpuhelujärjestelmään. Järjestelmää koekäytettiin oikeassa toimintatilanteessa varsinaisen puhelinjärjestelmän rinnalla tavallisessa toimistoympäristössä. Testaustulosten ja käyttäjäkokemusten perusteella on periaatteessa mahdollista rakentaa yksinkertainen langaton Internetpuhelujärjestelmä ja käyttää sitä puhelupalveluiden tarjoamiseen. Palvelun tarjoaminen vaatii kuitenkin vielä tiettyjen viestintäviraston määräysten täyttämistä ennen tuotantokäyttöön ottamista.

Palvelukeskeiseen arkkitehtuuriin perustuvia järjestelmiä voidaan kehittää käyttämällä useita vaihtoehtoisia teknologioita. Toteuttamiseen parhaiten soveltuvia teknologioita ovat erilaiset standardikokoelmat, jotka tukevat useiden toisistaan toteutustavaltaan poikkeavien järjestelmien yhdistämistä käyttämällä standardeihin perustuvia rajapintoja. Täten kyseiset kokoelmat tukevat laajojen, useista erillisistä osista koostuvien palvelujärjestelmien kehittämistä. Tässä työssä selvitetään mikä palvelukeskeinen arkkitehtuuri on sekä millaisia komponentteja ja teknologioita kyseiseen arkkitehtuuriin perustuvan palvelujärjestelmän toteuttamiseen tarvitaan. Tavoitteena on esitellä palvelukeskeinen arkkitehtuuri ja siihen liittyvät teknologiat sekä suunnitella korkealla tasolla kyseisiä teknologioita hyödyntävä integraatioalusta käyttäjien ja useiden palvelun tarjoajien yhdistämiseksi. Työn tuloksena syntyvän teknologiaselvitysraportin selvitysluonteen vuoksi työssä ei suunnitella tarkasti toteutettavaa järjestelmää vaan ainoastaanpohjustetaan järjestelmän suunnittelua sekä esitellään siihen liittyviä arkkitehtuuri- ja toteutusmahdollisuuksia. Internet-pohjainen palvelukeskeiseen arkkitehtuuriin perustuva järjestelmä voi perustua suoriinverkon välisiin yhteyksiin tai vaihtoehtoisesti erityyppisiin välitason sovelluksiin. Välitason sovellukset mahdollistavat niiden tyypistä riippuen järjestelmän erilaisten lisäominaisuuksien toteuttamisen ja tukevat useita yleisimpiä palvelukeskeisiä teknologioita. Työn tuloksena syntyneen teknologiaselvityksen perusteella näistä teknologioista Web-palvelu -arkkitehtuuri ja siihen liittyvät menetelmät soveltuvat parhaiten suunniteltavan järjestelmän rakenneosiksi. Järjestelmän tarkemmat toteutustavat riippuvat myöhemmin määriteltävistä yksityiskohtaisista vaatimuksista sekä valittavasta välitason ohjelmiston toteutuksesta.

Internet -palvelunhallinnan rooli kasvaa tulevaisuudessa ja sen kehittäminen on yhä tärkeämpää. Palvelut kehittyvät monipuolisemmiksi, niiden laatu paranee ja käyttömäärät kasvavat. Erityisesti palveluiden sisällönhallinnan rooli kasvaa ja palveluiden laadusta tulee merkittävä kilpailutekijä. Kokonaisvaltaisen palvelunhallinnan on pystyttävä vastaamaan joustavasti palveluntarjoajien uusiin tarpeisiin, jolloin sen on kehityttävä samaan suuntaan kuin palvelunhallinnan perinteisen telemaailman puolella. Palvelunhallinnan on tuettava kaikkia OSS -järjestelmien (Operating Support System) osa-alueita, jolloin sen laajamittaiseen toteuttamiseen tarvitaan siihen liittyvien erilaisten hallintarajapintojen standardointia. Palvelunhallintajärjestelmät on toteutettava mahdollisimman joustaviksi, jotta niiden piiriin saadaan uusien komponenttien lisäksi jo olemassa olevat komponentit. Mahdollinen palvelunhallinnan toteutustapa voi olla Javan ja CORBA:n (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) yhteiskäyttö, sillä ne takaavat järjestelmään tarvittavan joustavuuden muuttuvissa olosuhteissa kuten Internetissä.
