Biomorphological Alterations Induced by an Anti-juvenile Hormonal Compound, 2-(2-EthoxyEthoxy)Ethyl Furfuryl Ether, on Three Species of Triatominae Larvae (Hemiptera, Reduviidae)

Applied topically to larvae of Rhodnius prolixus Stal, Triatoma infestans (Klug) and Panstrongylus herreri Wygodzinsky, vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas'disease, a synthetic, furan-containing anti-juvenile hormonal compound, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl furfuryl ether induced a variety of biomorphological alterations, including precocious metamorphosis into small adultoids with adult abdominal cuticle, ocelli, as well as rudimentary adultoid wings. Some adultoids died during ecdysis and were confined within the old cuticle. The extension of these biomorphological responses is discussed in terms of the complexity of the action of anti-juvenile hormonal compounds during the development of triatomines

The Growth of Brown Adipose Tissue in Cold-acclimatized Rats after Depletion of Mast Cell Histamine by Compound 48/80

Cold acclimatization (4-5°C) is accompanied by 2-3 fold increase of brown adipose tissue (BAT). This rapid growth of interscapular BAT was studied after histamine depletion. In control rats maintained at room temperature (28 ± 2°C) the BAT histamine content was 23.4 ± 5.9 (mean ± SD) µg/g of tissue and cold acclimatization (5±1°C) produced a significant increase of BAT weight, but reduced the histamine content to 8.4 ± 1.9 µg/g. The total weight of BAT after 20 days of acclimatization was unaffected by depletion of histamine due to compound 48/80. The low level of histamine in BAT of cold acclimatized rats could be due to a fast rate of amine utilization; alternatively an altered synthesis or storage process may occur during acclimatization.

This is a publication of The National Council on Ageing and Older People The Conference took place on October 3, 2005 . It attracted almost 250 delegates from across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors, and from every county. The Conference provided the opportunity for delegates to focus on the issue of social inclusion of older people at local level and the challenges it presents. Time to Move On from Congregated Settings: A Strategy for Community Inclusion

19.6.2011 I am pleased to present the Report of the Working Group on Congregated Settings, which is the outcome and culmination of a very significant piece of data capture, research and analysis. The Report was initiated by the Primary, Community and Community Care Directorate in 2007 to develop a national plan and associated change programme for moving people from congregated settings to the community in line with Government policy. A Study on the Feasibility of the Inclusion of General Practitioners and Prisons in the National Drug Treatment Reporting System: Plan for the Implementation of the NDTRS in Prison and GP Services

The Drug Misuse Research Division of the Health Research Board operates the National Drug Treatment Reporting System (NDTRS). The system is used to provide epidemiological information on treated problem drug misuse in Ireland and informs policy makers, researchers and the general public. The NDTRS collates data from participating treatment centres in all Health Board areas, however a gap in information exists in that drug misusers in treatment units within prisons and those treated by General Practitioners are not included. This study aims to determine the feasibility of including these two groups to increase coverage of the NDTRS and outlines preliminary steps for their inclusion.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

Delivering Equality Of Opportunity In Schools - An Action Plan for Educational Inclusion

This action plan focuses on addressing the educational needs of children and young people from disadvantaged communities, from pre-school through second-level education (3 to18 years). Its frame of reference is based on the definition of “educational disadvantage” in the Education Act (1998) as: “...the impediments to education arising from social or economic disadvantage which prevent students from deriving appropriate benefit from education in schools.” The action plan is, therefore, one element of a continuum of interventions to address disadvantage, which include second-chance education and training and access measures for adults to support increased participation by under-represented groups in further and higher education. A further element of this continuum is the ongoing development of provision for pupils with special educational needs in light of the enactment of the Education for Persons with Special Needs Act (2004) and the establishment of the National Council for Special Education.

Using flow cytometry for in situ monitoring of antimicrobial compound production in the biocontrol bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0.

Pseudomonas fluorescens strain CHA0 is able to protect plants against a variety of pathogens, notably by producing the two antimicrobial compounds 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) and pyoluteorin (PLT). The regulation of the expression of these compounds is affected by many biotic factors, such as fungal pathogens, rhizosphere bacteria as well as plant species. Therefore, the influence of some plant phenolic compounds on the expression of DAPG and PLT biosynthetic genes has been tested using GFP-based reporter, monitored by standard fluometry and flow cytometry. In situ experiments were also performed with cucumber plants. We found that several plant metabolites such as IAA and umbelliferone are able to modify significantly the expression of DAPG and PLT. The use of flow cytometry with autofluorescents proteins seems to be a promising method to study rhizobacteria-plant interactions.
