A new approach to the preparation of large palladium nanoparticles with diameters between 25 and 100 nm is presented. In this approach PdCl42- ions are reduced on the surface of performed 12-nm-diameter gold "seeds'' by the introduction of ascorbic acid. The resultant particles exhibit improved monodispersity relative to previous work. Interestingly, these nanoparticles possess Au-Pd core-shell structures. The method can be scaled up to produce 50-110 mg of large palladium nanoparticles.

An improved method of PCR in which the small segment of conchocelis is amplified directly without DNA extraction was used to amplify a RUBISCO intergenic spacer DNA fragment from nine species of red algal genus Porphyra (Bangiales, Rhodophyta), including Porphyra yezoensis (Jiangsu, China), P. haitanensis (Fujian, China), P. oligospermatangia (Qingdao, China), P. katadai (Qingdao, China), P. tenera (Qingdao, China), P. suborboculata (Fujian, China), P. pseudolinearis (Kogendo, Korea), P. linearis (Devon, England), and P. fallax (Seattle, USA). Standard PCR and the method developed here were both conducted using primers specific for the RUBISCO spacer region, after which the two PCR products were sequenced. The sequencing data of the amplicons obtained using both methods were identical, suggesting that the improved PCR method was functional. These findings indicate that the method developed here may be useful for the rapid identification of species of Porphyra in a germplasm bank. In addition, a phylogenetic tree was constructed using the RUBISCO spacer and partial rbcS sequence, and the results were in concordant with possible alternative phylogenies based on traditional morphological taxonomic characteristics, indicating that the RUBISCO spacer is a useful region for phylogenetic studies.

This paper proposes a modification to the ACI 318-02 equivalent frame method of analysis of reinforced concrete flat plate exterior panels. Two existing code methods were examined: ACI 318 and BS 8110. The derivation of the torsional stiffness of the edge strip as proposed by ACI 318 is examined and a more accurate estimate of this value is proposed, based on both theoretical analysis and experimental results. A series of 1/3-scale models of flat plate exterior panels have been tested. Unique experimental results were obtained by measuring strains in reinforcing bars at approximately 200 selected locations in the plate panel throughout the entire loading history. The measured strains were used to calculate curvature and, hence, bending moments; these were used along with moments in the columns to assess the accuracy of the equivalent frame methods. The proposed method leads to a more accurate prediction of the moments in the plate at the column front face, at the panel midspan, and in the edge column. Obtaining as much particulate material as possible from questioned items is desirable in forensic science as this allows a range of analyses to be undertaken and the retention of material for others to check. A method of maximising particulate recovery is described using a kidnap case, where minimal staining on clothing (socks) remained as possible indications of where the victim had been held captive. Police intelligence led to a hostage scene that was sampled. Brushing of the socks recovered about 50 sand grains with some silt: ultrasonic agitation and centrifuging recovered over 300 grains of sand, silt and clay. These were visually compared to scene and control samples, allowing exclusion of 52 samples and the retention of one comparison sample as well as other possibles, saving time and money, but maximising sample quantity and quality. © 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

Hierarchical SSZ-13 zeolites were synthesized by combining N,N,N-trimethyl-1-adamantanammonium hydroxide (TMAdOH) as the structure-directing agent for chabazite formation with mono- and diquaternary ammonium-type and organosilane mesoporogens and extensively characterized for their structural, textural, and catalytic properties. Mesoporous SSZ-13 zeolites can be synthesized in one step by combining TMAdOH and the diquaternary ammonium-type surfactant C22-4-4Br2. The mesopore volume increases with the mesoporogen/SDA ratio. The hierarchical zeolites are highly crystalline and exhibit similar Brønsted acidity as SSZ-13. Hierarchical SSZ-13 zeolites display increased lifetime in packed-bed MTO experiments than conventional SSZ-13 at similar light olefins yield. The increased lifetime is due to better utilization of the micropore space. With increasing mesoporosity, the micropore space is used more efficiently, but also the rate of coke formation at the crystal periphery increases. Accordingly, the most stable zeolite is obtained at a relatively low C22-4-4Br2/SDA ratio. These zeolite catalysts can be regenerated without substantial loss of activity.

After the development of a new single-zone meanline modelling technique, benchmarking of the technique and the modelling methods used during its development are presented. The new meanline model had been developed using the results of three automotive turbocharger centrifugal compressors, and single passage CFD models based on their geometry.
The target of the current study was to test the new meanline modelling method on two new centrifugal compressor stages, again from the automotive turbocharger variety. Furthermore the single passage CFD modelling method used in the previous study would be again employed here and also benchmarked.
The benchmarking was twofold; firstly test the overall performance prediction accuracy of the single-zone meanline model. Secondly, test the detailed performance estimation of the CFD model using detailed interstage static pressure tappings.
The final component of this study exposed the weaknesses in the current modelling methods used (explicitly during this study). The non-axisymmetric flow field at the leading and trailing edges for the two compressors was measured and is presented here for the complete compressor map, highlighting the distortion relative to the tongue.

Quantitatively assessing the importance or criticality of each link in a network is of practical value to operators, as that can help them to increase the network's resilience, provide more efficient services, or improve some other aspect of the service. Betweenness is a graph-theoretical measure of centrality that can be applied to communication networks to evaluate link importance. However, as we illustrate in this paper, the basic definition of betweenness centrality produces inaccurate estimations as it does not take into account some aspects relevant to networking, such as the heterogeneity in link capacity or the difference between node-pairs in their contribution to the total traffic. A new algorithm for discovering link centrality in transport networks is proposed in this paper. It requires only static or semi-static network and topology attributes, and yet produces estimations of good accuracy, as verified through extensive simulations. Its potential value is demonstrated by an example application. In the example, the simple shortest-path routing algorithm is improved in such a way that it outperforms other more advanced algorithms in terms of blocking ratio

A revised Bayesian algorithm for estimating surface rain rate, convective rain proportion, and latent heating profiles from satellite-borne passive microwave radiometer observations over ocean backgrounds is described. The algorithm searches a large database of cloud-radiative model simulations to find cloud profiles that are radiatively consistent with a given set of microwave radiance measurements. The properties of these radiatively consistent profiles are then composited to obtain best estimates of the observed properties. The revised algorithm is supported by an expanded and more physically consistent database of cloud-radiative model simulations. The algorithm also features a better quantification of the convective and nonconvective contributions to total rainfall, a new geographic database, and an improved representation of background radiances in rain-free regions. Bias and random error estimates are derived from applications of the algorithm to synthetic radiance data, based upon a subset of cloud-resolving model simulations, and from the Bayesian formulation itself. Synthetic rain-rate and latent heating estimates exhibit a trend of high (low) bias for low (high) retrieved values. The Bayesian estimates of random error are propagated to represent errors at coarser time and space resolutions, based upon applications of the algorithm to TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) data. Errors in TMI instantaneous rain-rate estimates at 0.5°-resolution range from approximately 50% at 1 mm h−1 to 20% at 14 mm h−1. Errors in collocated spaceborne radar rain-rate estimates are roughly 50%–80% of the TMI errors at this resolution. The estimated algorithm random error in TMI rain rates at monthly, 2.5° resolution is relatively small (less than 6% at 5 mm day−1) in comparison with the random error resulting from infrequent satellite temporal sampling (8%–35% at the same rain rate). Percentage errors resulting from sampling decrease with increasing rain rate, and sampling errors in latent heating rates follow the same trend. Averaging over 3 months reduces sampling errors in rain rates to 6%–15% at 5 mm day−1, with proportionate reductions in latent heating sampling errors.
