A probabilistic analysis of the biometrics menagerie existence: case study in fingerprint data

Until recently the use of biometrics was restricted to high-security environments and criminal identification applications, for economic and technological reasons. However, in recent years, biometric authentication has become part of daily lives of people. The large scale use of biometrics has shown that users within the system may have different degrees of accuracy. Some people may have trouble authenticating, while others may be particularly vulnerable to imitation. Recent studies have investigated and identified these types of users, giving them the names of animals: Sheep, Goats, Lambs, Wolves, Doves, Chameleons, Worms and Phantoms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the existence of these users types in a database of fingerprints and propose a new way of investigating them, based on the performance of verification between subjects samples. Once introduced some basic concepts in biometrics and fingerprint, we present the biometric menagerie and how to evaluate them.

Arte, prazer e bisturi: construção corporal através da body modification

In view of a field research carried out by a team connected to the universe of body modification, it is possible to discern some uses and meanings linked to these forms of body interventions. Body modification or body change is part of the circuit of piercings and tattoos, although they are socially less thinned and more extreme, like scarifications, subcutaneous implants, bifurcated tongues, surfaces and body suspensions. The aim of this paper is to cast an anthropological glance on these practices, joining at the same context all the subjects involved with these techniques, placing them inside the same relational focus and capturing their journeys and trajectories. The discussions are concentrated on the notion of body building and urban life style. Ideas as personal distinctness and prestige imitation are also present in this universe, as well as matters attached to genre, pleasure, art, and to the so-called alternative circuit . This way, the ethnography so far presented here, reveals the complex and contemporaneous character of these practices of body markings in which the body appears as the central element in the experiences of the subjects of this study

De Pequenino se Limpa o Rabinho - Ilustração aplicada em papel higiénico e o seu contributo na facilitação da aprendizagem infantil

A presente dissertação desenvolve um projeto que visa analisar o papel da ilustração enquanto meio de comunicação e de que forma as ilustrações, juntamente com a linguagem verbal, podem contribuir favoravelmente para o processo de aprendizagem das crianças. A análise teórica refletiu-se num trabalho prático que visa responder a uma necessidade comum e atual das crianças e dos familiares que as acompanham. No presente trabalho, foi criado um rolo de papel higiénico ilustrado que serve como guia de instruções para as crianças em fase de transição da fralda para a sanita. Este produto temático é ainda inexistente no mercado de vendas de papel higiénico sendo que a sua investigação e desenvolvimento poderá ser uma mais valia.

A vitalidade da Música na criação do Modernismo impõe-se no diálogo que estabelece com a Literatura e a Pintura. A Música é a arte que desperta no ser humano as emoções mais profundas, ecos e ressonâncias da alma. É uma arte da vibração e do rigor da medida, abstrata, liberta das contingências da imitação. A partir do fim do século XIX ela vai à procura de novos caminhos, muitos músicos entram em rutura com a linguagem harmónica tradicional, à procura de novas expressividades. Este processo de busca e de vanguarda da Música marca as diferentes correntes pictóricas: como temática visível, na globalidade; e como fragmentação do tempo e estruturação vibrante da forma e da cor, em Amadeu e nos artistas que sentem a pintura como um caminho interior. Perceber os sons e as vibrações dessa musicalidade dá-nos a evolução e a profundidade do percurso da obra plástica de Amadeo.
