The effect of the gamma-form crystal on the thermal fractionation of a commercial poly(propylene-co-ethylene) (PPE) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. Two thermal fractionation techniques, stepwise isothermal crystallization (SIC) and successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA), have been used to characterize the molecular heterogeneity of the PPE. The results indicate that the SSA technique possesses a stronger fractionation ability than that of the SIC technique. The heating scan of the SSA fractionated sample exhibits 12 endothermic peaks, whereas the scan of the SIC fractionated sample only shows eight melting peaks. The WAXD observations of the fractionated PPE samples prove that the content of the gamma-form crystals formed during the thermal treatment of the SIC technique is much higher than that of the SSA treatment. The former is 57.4%, whereas the later is 12.6%. The effect of they-form crystals on thermal fractionation ability is discussed.

The crystallization behaviors of the poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymer with the PEG weight fraction of 0.50 (PEG(50)-PCL50) was studied by DSC, WAXD, SAXS, and FTIR. A superposed melting point at 58.5 degrees C and a superposed crystallization temperature at 35.4 degrees C were obtained from the DSC profiles running at 10 degrees C/min, whereas the temperature-dependent FTIR measurements during cooling from the melt at 0.2 degrees C/min showed that the PCL crystals formed starting at 48 degrees C while the PEG crystals started at 45 degrees C. The PEG and PCL blocks of the copolymer crystallized separately and formed alternating lamella regions according to the WAXD and SAXS results. The crystal growth of the diblock copolymer was observed by polarized optical microscope (POM). An interesting morphology of the concentric spherulites developed through a unique crystallization behavior. The concentric spherulites were analyzed by in situ microbeam FTIR, and it was determined that the morphologies of the inner and outer portions were mainly determined by the PCL and PEG spherulites, respectively. However, the compositions of the inner and outer portions were equal in the analysis by microbeam FTIR.

Noncrosslinking linear low-density polyethylene-grafted acrylic acid (LLDPE-g-AA) was prepared by melt-reactive extrusion in our laboratory. The thermal behavior of LLDPE-g-AA was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with neat linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), melting temperature (T-m) of LLDPE-g-AA increased a little, the crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 4degreesC, and the melting enthalpy (DeltaH(m) ) decreased with an increase in acrylic acid content. Isothermal crystallization kinetics of LLDPE and LLDPE-g-AA samples were carried out by using DSC. The overall crystallization rate of LLDPE was smaller than that of grafted samples. It showed that the grafted acrylic acid monomer onto LLDPE acted as a nucleating agent. Crystal morphologies of LLDPE-g-AA and LLDPE were examined by using SEM. Spherulite sizes of LLDPE-g-AA samples were lower than that of LLDPE.

The analysis of the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data was based upon particle characteristic function, one-dimensional electron-density correlation function and particle distribution function. The microstructure of nylon 66 with different degrees of crystallinity was studied by means of X-ray scattering method. The radius of gyration R-g, the Porod radius R-p, the thickness of crystalline region L-c the thickness of non-crystalline region L-n, the thickness of interphase region d(tr), the long period L, the semiaxises of particles (a, a, b), the distribution of the particle sizes and the scattering invariant were calculated. The results indicate that there was a significant interphase region between the crystalline region and the non-crystalline region. and its content (W-t,W-x) should not be neglected in comparison with that of crystalline region W-c,W-x. The morphology of nylon 66 prepared by isothermal crystallization at a high temperature was mainly a lamellar structure, while the spherical crystals dominated in the quenched sample. The size of the particles in the quenched sample was smaller than that of those in the isothermally crystallized sample. and the distribution of the particle sizes in the isothermally crystallized sample was wider.

A perfect single crystal of nylon-2,14 was prepared from 0.02% (w/v) 1,4-butanediol solution by a "self-seeding" technique and isothermal crystallization at 120 and 145 degreesC. The morphology and structure features were examined by transmission electron microscopy with both image and diffraction modes, atomic force microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The nylon-2,14 single crystal grown from 1,4-butanediol at 145 degreesC inhabited a lathlike shape with a lamellar thickness of about 9 nm. Electron diffraction and WAXD data indicated that nylon-2,14 crystallized in a triclinic system with lattice dimensions a = 0.49 nm, b = 0.51 nm, c = 2.23 nm, alpha = 60.4degrees, beta = 77degrees, and gamma = 59degrees. The crystal structure is different from that of nylon-6,6 but similar to that of other members of nylon-2Y.

In this report, we describe an improved thermal fractionation technique used to characterize the polydispersity of crystalline ethylene sequence length (CESL) of ethylene/alpha -olefin copolymers. After stepwise isothermal crystallization, the crystalline ethylene sequences are sorted into groups by their lengths. The CESLs are estimated using melting points of known hydrocarbons. The content of each group is determined using the calibrated peak area. The statistical terms: the arithmetic mean (L) over bar (n), the weighted mean (L) over bar (w) and the broadness index I = (L) over bar (w)/(L) over bar (n) are used to describe the distribution of CESL. Results show that improved thermal fractionation technique can quantitatively characterize the polydispersity of CESL with a high degree of accuracy.

The controlling factors for the epitaxial crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates have been studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results obtained in this work indicate that the crystallization process must be considered in the investigation of epitaxial growth of polymers on polymeric substrates, because of the unique morphological and crystallization characteristics of polymers. Crystallization rate has an important effect on the epitaxial crystallization of polymers. Higher rates result in the formation of thicker epitaxial layers. Isothermal crystallization temperature is another factor affecting epitaxial growth of polymers. Lower temperatures are favorable to epitaxial crystallization of polymers. There exists a critical epitaxial temperature at given experimental conditions, above which no epitaxial growth occurs at all. The influence of crystal dimensions of both the substrates and the deposited polymers on epitaxial growth confirms that secondary nucleation is an important controlling factor for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization in polymers. The requirement satisfying the secondary nucleation criterion is that the substrate crystal dimension in the matching direction must be greater than the crystal thickness of the deposited polymer. Once the requirement of the secondary nucleation is satisfied, subsequent epitaxial growth is based on the lamellar growth habit of the deposited polymer itself. The isothermal crystallization process of a PCL/SAN blend (90/10 wt.-%) was investigated by using real time image analysis and hot stage optical microscopy. It was found that the growth rate of ring-banded spherulites in the isothermal crystallization process is not constant. Slow growth occurs in the bright bands, while fast growth is found in the dark bands. The radially unequal growth rate of ring-banded spherulites in PCL/SAN blends may be related to the convex band structure on the surface. This new discovery gives us the idea that rhythmic growth is effective in the growth process of ring banded spherulites.

The thermal properties of ethylene propylene copolymer-grafted-acrylic acid (EP-g-AA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with the ethylene propylene copolymer (EP), the peak values of the melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, the crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and the melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of the ungrafted sample was 1.6-1.8, and that of grafted samples were all above 2, which indicated that the grafted monomer could become the crystal nuclei for the crystallization of propylene sequence. With increasing grafted monomer content, the crystallization rate of propylene sequence in grafted EP increased; it might be the result of rapid nucleation rate and crystal growth rate.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) based nanocomposites have been prepared with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) through an ultrasound assisted dissolution-evaporation method. Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that SWNTs nucleate crystallization in PET at weight fractions as low as 0.3%, as the nanocomposite melt crystallized during cooling at temperature 24 °C higher than neat PET of identical molecular weight. Isothermal crystallization studies also revealed that SWNTs significantly accelerate the crystallization process. Mechanical properties of the PETSWNT nanocomposites improved as compared to neat PET indicating the effective reinforcement provided by nanotubes in the polymer matrix. Electrical conductivity measurements on the nanocomposite films showed that SWNTs at concentrations exceeding 1 wt% in the PET matrix result in electrical percolation. Comparison of crystallization, conductivity and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that ultrasound assisted dissolution-evaporation method enables more effective dispersion of SWNTs in the PET matrix as compared to the melt compounding method

A combination of in situ and ex situ X-ray scattering techniques and transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the crystallization behaviour of polyethylene, following the imposition of melt shear. In the case of a branched material, the imposition of shear flow up to a rate of 30 s(-1) was found to induce no anisotropy. Although shearing the linear material only ever induced a very small degree of anisotropy in the melt, for shear rates > 0.15 s(-1), subsequent crystallization resulted in increasing anisotropy. Blends of the above two polyethylenes were produced, in which the linear material constituted the minority fraction (similar to 10%). Isothermal crystallization at temperatures where extensive crystallization of the branched material does not occur demonstrated that the behaviour of the linear component of the sheared blend mirrored that of the linear polyethylene alone. However, in addition, it was found that when crystallized in the presence of an oriented morphology, the branched polymer also formed anisotropic structures. We have termed the process templating, in which the crystallization behaviour of the bulk of the system (similar to 90% branched material) is completely altered (spherulitic to oriented lamellar) by mapping it onto a pre-existing minority structure (similar to 10% linear polymer). Samples recovered from Hole 504B during Leg 140 include a number of medium-grained, holocrystalline diabases that appear to represent the cores of thick dikes. The plagioclase and pyroxene in these samples occur in a variety of crystal morphologies. Plagioclase occurs as phenocrysts, microphenocrysts, elongate crystals, skeletal crystals, and branching radial clusters. Pyroxene occurs as phenocrysts, microphenocrysts, ophitic crystals, and poikilitic crystals. Plagioclase compositions became progressively poorer in anorthite and MgO and progressively richer in FeO as crystallization proceeded, while the average grain volume decreased and the aspect ratio of individual grains increased. Pyroxene compositions are largely independent of crystal morphology. The diabase dikes recovered from Hole 504B during Leg 140 appear to have crystallized in situ. Crystal compositions and morphologies are consistent with a rapid cooling rate and solidification times for individual dikes on the order of hours or days. The crystallization rate and nucleation rate of plagioclase lagged behind the cooling rate so that the degree of undercooling progressively increased as crystallization proceeded. Plagioclase crystal morphologies indicate much greater degrees of supersaturation than do pyroxene or olivine crystal morphologies. The 504B diabase magmas appear to have been emplaced with abundant preexisting pyroxene and olivine nuclei, but with few preexisting plagioclase nuclei. The suppression of plagioclase nucleation and crystallization relative to that of pyroxene and olivine could provide a mechanism by which the actual fractionation assemblage is more pyroxene-rich and plagioclase-poor than that predicted from thermodynamic models, or that observed in isothermal crystallization experiments.
