South Lancashire Fisheries Advisory Committee 12th January 1977.

This is the report from the South Lancashire Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th January 1977. This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th July 1979. The report contains the minutes of the last meetings of the Local Fisheries Advisory Committees, the income from sale of rod and line licences, fishing offences and prosecutions, and information on the disposal of redundant properties. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

The report contains the minutes of the previous meetings of the Local Fisheries Advisory Committees, information on fishing licence duties, net and fixed engine licence duties and eel fishing in tidal and estuarial waters. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

Northern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee 12th October, 1981

This is the report from the Northern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th October, 1981. It includes the information on the recommendations of the Area Fisheries Advisory Committees on the Review of Inland and Coastal Fisheries in England and Wales, and the restructuring of rod and line fishing licence duties. It also covers the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activities. This comments on river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movements from Yearl Weir fish counter and an update on Holmwrangle hatchery with the summary of the fly planting programme for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Finally the report adds about stockings carried out by the Angling Associations, fish disease and management and survey work. EEFIT mission to Haiti following the 12th January 2010 earthquake

The Mw= 7.2 Haiti earthquake of 12th January 2010 caused extensive damage to buildings and other infrastructure in the epicentral region in and around Port-au-Prince. The Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), which is based in the United Kingdom, organised a field mission to Haiti with the authors as the team members. The paper presents the geotechnical findings of the team including those relating to soil liquefaction and lateral spreading and discusses the performance of buildings, including historic buildings, and bridges. Unprecedented use was made of damage assessments made from remote images (i. e. images taken from satellites and aircraft) when planning the post-earthquake relief effort in Haiti and a principal objective of the team was to evaluate the accuracy of such assessments. Accordingly, 142 buildings in Port-au-Prince were inspected in the field by the EEFIT team; damage assessments had previously been made using remote images for all these buildings. On the basis of this survey, the tendency of remote assessments to underestimate damage was confirmed; it was found that the underestimate applied to assessments based on oblique images using the relatively new technique of Pictometry, as well as those based on vertical images, although to a lesser degree. The paper also discusses the distribution of damage in Port-au-Prince, which was found to be strongly clustered in ways that appear not to have been completely explained. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

WASP-4b: A 12th magnitude transiting hot Jupiter in the southern hemisphere

We report the discovery of WASP-4b, a large transiting gas-giant planet with an orbital period of 1.34 days. This is the first planet to be discovered by the SuperWASP-South observatory and CORALIE collaboration and the first planet orbiting a star brighter than 16th magnitude to be discovered in the southern hemisphere. A simultaneous fit to high-quality light curves and precision radial velocity measurements leads to a planetary mass of 1.22(-0.08)(+0.09) M-Jup and a planetary radius of 1.42(-0.04)(+0.07) R-Jup. The host star is USNO-B1.0 0479-0948995, a G7 V star of visual magnitude 12.5. As a result of the short orbital period, the predicted surface temperature of the planet is 1761 K, making it an ideal candidate for detections of the secondary eclipse at infrared wavelengths.
