Nowadays, new emerging products claiming antioxidant properties are becoming more frequent. However, information about this topic in their labels is usually scarce. In this paper, we analyzed total phenolics, total flavonoids and ascorbic acid contents, as well as DPPH scavenging activity of several commercial samples, namely green tea and other herbal infusions, dietary supplements, and fruit juices, available in the Portuguese market. In general, beverages containing green tea and hibiscus showed higher phenolics contents (including flavonoids) and antioxidant activity than those without these ingredients. A borututu infusion presented the lowest concentrations of bioactive compounds and scavenging activity, due to the low recommended amount of plant to prepare the beverage. Some juices without antioxidant claims in the label presented similar values to those with it.

Actualmente tem-se verificado um grande aumento na procura e a utilização de produtos naturais contendo extractos de algas, com fins medicinais, sendo cada vez maior a diversidade de oferta desses produtos, vendidos em ervanária e afins. A bibliografia tem mostrado que as algas têm capacidade de acumulação de metais pesados. As algas, sendo organismos aquáticos, estão sujeitas a contaminações dos locais (não identificados) de onde provêm. O controlo e fiscalização para estes produtos é praticamente inexistente. O objectivo deste projecto foi o desenvolvimento de metodologias analíticas com vista à quantificação de metais em infusões de chás e ervas aromáticas. Foram analisadas 9 amostras: uma de chá verde, uma de chá preto, uma infusão de lima, uma de camomila, uma mistura de chá com ervas e quatro misturas contendo algas. A espectrofotometria de absorção atómica é o método de referência para a análise de metais. Neste trabalho foi utilizado um espectrofotómetro de absorção atómica com fonte de radiação contínua e monocromador de alta resolução. Sendo esta uma tecnologia inovadora foi necessário desenvolver metodologias para os métodos de análise. A atomização em chama foi a técnica utilizada para a quantificação do cálcio, potássio, magnésio, manganês e sódio. A atomização electrotérmica foi usada para o cádmio, cobalto, crómio, cobre, níquel e chumbo. Tendo em conta os limites legislados (Decreto-Lei Nº306/2007 de 27 de Agosto) obtiveram-se teores preocupantes para o níquel (iguais ou superiores ao limite legislado) em todas as amostras analisadas e para o manganês em duas das amostras (chá verde e chá preto). Todas as amostras contendo algas apresentaram teores de Ca, Mg e Na superiores aos das restantes. Para os restantes elementos não foi possível relacionar as concentrações com a composição das infusões, em particular a presença de algas.

This paper discusses the key role played by public research institutes for promoting socioeconomic inclusion of local communities based on traditional knowledge and traditional medicine. Nongovernmental organizations and cooperatives have had an important role in raising financial resources, being involved with advocacy of local communities and advancing legislation changes. But strict best manufacturing practices regulations imposed by the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency on the requirements for approval and commercialization of drugs based on herbal medicine products call for the involvement of strong public research institutes capable of supporting community-based pharmacies. Thus, public research institutes are pivotal as they can conduct scientific research studies to evidence the efficacy of herbal medicine products and help building the capacity of local communities to comply with current regulations.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the determinants of the lack of pharmacological treatment for hypertension. METHODS: In 2005, 3,323 Mozambicans aged 25-64 years old were evaluated. Blood pressure, weight, height and smoking status were assessed following the Stepwise Approach to Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance. Hypertensives (systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg and/or antihypertensive drug therapy) were evaluated for awareness of their condition, pharmacological and non-pharmacological management, as well as use of herbal or traditional remedies. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated, adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, cardiovascular risk factors and non-pharmacological treatment. RESULTS: Most of the hypertensive subjects (92.3%), and nearly half of those aware of their condition were not treated pharmacologically. Among the aware, the prevalence of untreated hypertension was higher in men {PR = 1.61; 95% confidence interval (95%CI 1.10;2.36)} and was lower in subjects under non-pharmacological treatment (PR = 0.58; 95%CI 0.42;0.79); there was no significant association with traditional treatments (PR = 0.75; 95%CI 0.44;1.26). CONCLUSIONS: The lack of pharmacological treatment for hypertension was more frequent in men, and was not influenced by the presence of other cardiovascular risk factors; it could not be explained by the use of alternative treatments as herbal/traditional medicines or non-pharmacological management. It is important to understand the reasons behind the lack of management of diagnosed hypertension and to implement appropriate corrective actions to reduce the gap in the access to healthcare between developed and developing countries.

The concurrent use of herbs and/or nutritional supplements with psychoactive effect and prescription medications is common among college students. College students are a particularly vulnerable population, for they are under less social/familiar surveillance and seek greater independence, as well as under greater intellectual effort, stress, anxiety and depression, which predispose them to a higher consumption of psychoactive substances. Herbs, vitamins, and other dietary supplements may influence the effects of prescription and nonprescription drugs leading to adverse consequences, by increasing the potential for interactions. However, documented interactions between herbal medicinal products and prescribed drugs are rare. Objective: determine the prevalence of concomitant use of psychoactive substances among healthcare students in the Lisbon School of Health Technology, Portugal, in order to assess the risk of potential herb-drug interactions.

A fitoterapia é umas das Medicinas Alternativas e/ou Complementares mais utilizadas pela população no quotidiano. Esta terapêutica é constituída por misturas de compostos químicos, que são responsáveis pelas suas ações no organismo. Estes compostos não atuam de forma independente, mas sim por efeito aditivo, antagónico ou sinérgico, resultando numa interação dos vários constituintes e dos diversos locais de ação. Nos últimos anos ressurgiu o interesse por esta terapia nos países desenvolvidos, principalmente devido aos efeitos secundários que os medicamentos convencionais podem provocar, e também pelo uso descontrolado e abusivo de certos fármacos. Deste modo, o número de estudos científicos com plantas e seus compostos tem vindo a aumentar ao longo dos anos, fornecendo evidências científicas quanto à sua segurança, aceitabilidade, eficácia, e mostrando menos efeitos secundários que os medicamentos convencionais. Com este projeto pretende-se caraterizar o conhecimento e o consumo de fitoterápicos pela população do distrito de Viana do Castelo. Aplicou-se um estudo observacional, descritivo do tipo transversal e analítico. A população alvo do estudo é a população em geral, residente no distrito de Viana do Castelo, com mais de 18 anos de idade. Para a recolha de informação foi realizado um questionário anónimo, confidencial e voluntário, a 914 individuos. A amostra é constituída maioritariamente por indivíduos do género feminino (58,3%). A faixa etária mais frequente é dos 18 aos 25 anos (19,7%) distribuída por todos os concelhos do distrito. Verificou-se que mais de 40% da população tem doença crónica, e mais de 60% recorreu a produtos fitoterápicos no último ano, havendo uma relação entre quem recorre a esta terapia e a existência de uma patologia crónica associada. Observou-se ainda que mais da 80% da população que utiliza estes produtos se encontra satisfeita com os resultados, sendo que mais de 85% dos utilizadores de fitoterápicos pretende voltar a utilizá-los.

Introdução: Entende-se por fitoterapia a terapêutica caracterizada pelo uso de plantas medicinais nas diferentes formas farmacêuticas com finalidade terapêutica, usada assim para prevenir, atenuar ou curar um estado patológico. Objetivos: Caracterizar a utilização de plantas aromáticas e medicinais (PAM´s), medicamentos e produtos à base de plantas pela população do concelho de Bragança, conhecer a fonte de indicação deste tipo de produtos, apurar a relação entre a fonte de indicação e o estado de saúde após a utilização, verificar a sua correta utilização relativa à indicação terapêutica, modo e frequência de utilização, identificar potenciais interacções medicamentosas, averiguar se os utentes informam o médico do seu uso, investigar a ocorrência de efeitos adversos e apurar a relação entre os efeitos adversos ocorridos e o género dos inquiridos. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo observacional analítico-transversal. Nele participaram 404 indivíduos de ambos os géneros e com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 89 anos. A recolha de dados foi realizada entre os meses de abril e junho de 2014, através de um questionário estruturado de autopreenchimento, formado por 30 perguntas. Após a recolha dos dados procedeu-se à leitura óptica dos questionários, sendo os dados posteriormente exportados para SPSS permitindo assim o tratamento dos mesmos. Para análise estatística utilizou-se o teste do qui-quadrado considerando o nível de significância p <0,05. Resultados: Verificou-se que 53,7% dos inquiridos recorre terapeuticamente a PAM´s que inclui principalmente o uso de cidreira e camomila enquanto 33,8% faz uso de medicamentos e/ou produtos àbase de plantas nomeadamente Valdispert e Daflon. A utilização de PAM,s é motivada por autoconhecimento e indicação de familiares, amigos e vizinhos. Já os medicamentos e/ou produtos à base de plantas são utilizados maioritariamente por prescrição médica e indicação na farmácia. A ocorrência de efeitos indesejáveis foi sentida unicamente com a utilização de PAM´s e em pequena escala. Conclusão: O recurso a este tipo de produtos é uma prática bastante comum entre os moradores do concelho de Bragança, que utilizam uma grande diversidade de plantas e produtos à base de plantas para um variado leque de indicações terapêuticas, apontando a percentagem de respostas para um conhecimento dos seus efeitos terapêuticos.

The present work was carried out to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of active ingredient Taraxerol with the acetone extract of Euphorbia tirucalli against Lymnaea acuminata snail. The (fecundity, hatchability and survivability) of snail L. acuminata exposed to this extract was studied. The effects of the tested extracts on life-history traits of harmful snail L. acuminata have also been evaluated, and this study also expounds the inhibitory effects of these extracts singly as well as in binary combination (1:1 ratio). It concluded that these herbal products act as a potential source of molluscicides, and that they would also have the advantage of easy availability, low cost, biodegradability and greater acceptance amongst users than synthetic pesticide.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine whether an herbal extract containing monoterpene exhibited activity against multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from clinical infection samples. METHODS: The essential oil of Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague ex Turrill (Apiaceae) fruit was extracted by hydrodistillation. Fruit residues were treated with hydrochloric acid and re-hydrodistilled to obtain volatile compounds. Compounds in the distilled oil were identified using gas-chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS). The antibiotic susceptibility of all bacterial isolates was analyzed using both the disc diffusion method and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The sensitivity of antibiotic-resistant isolates to essential oil was also determined by using the disc diffusion method and MIC determination. RESULTS: Of 26 clinical isolates, 92% were multidrug-resistant (MDR). Aromatic monoterpenes (thymol, paracymene, and gamma-terpinene) were the major (90%) components of the oil. Growth of S. aureus strains was successfully inhibited by the oil, with an inhibitory zone diameter (IZD) between 30-60mm and MIC <0.02μL/mL. The oil had no antimicrobial activity against clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa; rather, it prevented pigment production in these isolates. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that the essential oil of Trachyspermum ammi, which contains monoterpene, has good antibacterial potency. Monoterpenes could thus be incorporated into antimicrobial ointment formulas in order to treat highly drug-resistant S. aureus infections. Our findings also underscore the utility of research on natural products in order to combat bacterial multidrug resistance.

Los componentes volátiles presentes en la pulpa de la uva Caimarona se estudiaron mediante GC-MS. Éstos se extrajeron por tres técnicas: evaporación del aroma asistida con solvente (Solvent Assisted Flavour Evaporation SAFE), extracción continua líquido-líquido (LL) y destilación por arrastre con vapor-extracción simultanea con solvente orgánico (DES). En general los componentes volátiles predominantes en la pulpa fueron alcoholes alifáticos y terpénicos. Las notas olfativas del extracto SAFE fueron descritas como floral tenue y verde herbal similares a las exhibidas por la pulpa fresca. Este extracto presentó como componentes mayoritarios linalol 1,2-propanodiol y salicilato de metilo. En contraste, el extracto LL presentó notas que recuerdan la uva pasa y el vino moscatel y sus componentes mayoritarios fueron el ácido acético, el salicilato de metilo y el 2,6-dimetil-2(Z),7-octadien-1,6-diol. El extracto DES fue descrito con notas fresca, floral, cereal y amargo y está constituido por un reducido número de componentes mostrando el efecto negativo de la temperatura en la extracción; sus componentes mayoritarios fueron 1,2-propanodiol, linalol y salicilato de metilo. Adicionalmente, los componentes volátiles mayoritarios liberados por hidrólisis enzimática (Rohapect D5L) de los glicósidos de la pulpa fueron ácido acético, ácido benzoico y vainillina. Cabe destacar que aunque el linalol no se encontró entre las agliconas volátiles, se detectaron los dioles biogenéticamente relacionados: 3,7-dimetil-1,5-octadien-3,7-diol y los isómeros E y Z del 2,6-dimetil-2,7-octadien-1,6-diol.

Dietary supplement (DS) use increased rapidly over the last years. However evidence of benefits of many DS for healthy users are scarce and may not equate known risks of overdose, drug interaction and recently discovered negative long-term effects. Therefore this study aimed to investigate perceptions and motivations of DS users in Lausanne, Switzerland. Method A convenience sample was recruited at the entrance of local sales points. Data were collected in on-site semi-structured interviews to assess dietary supplementation habits. Results The 119 participants provided information on 147 users. Among 273 declared products, the majority were mixed products, containing minerals and vitamins (78), mineral products (69), and herbal products (28). 55% of DS users took more than one product simultaneously. Seventy five percent of participants indicated that DS use presents no risk or nearly no risk and about half (49%) of participants did not inform their physician about their consumption. Male participants reported to share this information with their physicians significantly less frequently than female participants (p = 0.008). About half of participants looked for information on potential risks of DS, men significantly more often than women (p=0.001). Discussion According to other studies in the US, our study shows that, in Lausanne (Switzerland), DS are commonly used as mixed products. Risk perception seems generally low among DS users. Implications Physicians should be trained to evaluate patientsʼ health behaviour and needs in order to provide good evidence based information or propose alternatives to DS use.

Parasitism was a universal human condition. Because of this, people developed herbal medicines to treat parasites as part of their pharmacopoeias. We propose that it is possible to recover evidence of medicinal plants from archaeological sites and link their use to specific health conditions. This is a multidisciplinary approach that must involve at least paleoethnobotanists, archaeoparasitologists, paleopathologists, and pharmacologists.

This leaflet gives you some basic facts about cannabis and also how it might affect your mental health. Introduction Lots of young people want to know about drugs. Often, people around you are taking them, and you may wonder how it will make you feel. You may even feel under pressure to use drugs in order to fit in, or be â?~coolâ?T. You may have heard that cannabis is no worse than cigarettes, or that it is harmless. What is cannabis? The cannabis plant is a member of the nettle family that has grown wild throughout the world for centuries. People have used it for lots of reasons, other than the popular relaxing effect. It comes in two main forms: ï,§ resin, which is a brown black lump also known as bhang, ganja or hashish ï,§ herbal cannabis, which is made up of the dried leaves and flowering tops, and is known as grass, marijuana, spliff, weed, etc. Skunk cannabis is made from a cannabis plant that has more active chemicals in it (THC), and the effect on your brain is stronger. Because â?~streetâ?T cannabis varies so much in strength, you will not be able to tell exactly how it will make you feel at any particular time. What does it do to you? When you smoke cannabis, the active compounds reach your brain quickly through your bloodstream. It then binds/sticks to a special receptor in your brain. This causes your nerve cells to release different chemicals, and causes the effects that you feel. These effects can be enjoyable or unpleasant. Often the bad effects take longer to appear than the pleasant ones. ï,§ Good/pleasant effects: You may feel relaxed and talkative, and colours or music may seem more intense. ï,§ Unpleasant effects: Feeling sick/panicky, feeling paranoid or hearing voices, feeling depressed and unmotivated. Unfortunately, some people can find cannabis addictive and so have trouble stopping use even when they are not enjoying it. The effects on your mental health Using cannabis triggers mental health problems in people who seemed to be well before, or it can worsen any mental health problems you already have. Research has shown that people who are already at risk of developing mental health problems are more likely to start showing symptoms of mental illness if they use cannabis regularly. For example if someone in your family has depression or schizophrenia, you are at higher risk of getting these illness when you use cannabis. The younger you are when you start using it, the more you may be at risk. This is because your brain is still developing and can be more easily damaged by the active chemicals in cannabis. If you stop using cannabis once you have started to show symptoms of mental illness, such as depression, paranoia or hearing voices, these symptoms may go away. However, not everyone will get better just by stopping smoking. If you go on using cannabis, the symptoms can get worse. It can also make any treatment that your doctor might prescribe for you, work less well. Your illness may come back more quickly, and more often if you continue to use cannabis once you get well again. Some people with mental health problems find that using cannabis makes them feel a bit better for a while. Unfortunately this does not last, and it does nothing to treat the illness. In fact, it may delay you from getting help you need and the illness may get worse in the longer term. In previous years, several publications have reported cases of infants presenting neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms after ingestion of star anise tea. Such teas are sometimes given in various cultures for the treatment of infant colic pains. In most cases, the cause of intoxication was contamination of Chinese star anise (Illicium verum) by Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum). Indeed, the toxicity of Illicium anisatum, also known as Shikimi, is caused by its content in potent neurotoxins (anisatin, neoanisatin, and pseudoanisatin), due to their activity as non-competitive antagonists of GABA receptors. The main reasons explaining the frequent contaminations are the strong macroscopic resemblance of the 2 substances, as well as the fact that the fruits are often sold partially broken or in ground form. Therefore, in most cases, chemical analysis is required to determine the possible adulterations. CASE REPORT: A 2-month-old infant, in good general health, was brought to the emergency unit after 3 consecutive episodes of central cyanosis and tetany of the limbs with spontaneous recovery the same afternoon. The child was also very irritable, regurgitated a lot, and positioned himself in opisthotonos. Between these episodes, the neurological exam showed some perturbations (horizontal nystagmus and Bell's phenomenon, hypertony of the extensor muscles, and mild hypotony of the axial flexor muscles) with slow improvement over the following hours. The remaining clinical exam, the laboratory work (complete blood count, renal, hepatic, and muscular tests, capillary blood gas, plasmatic amino acids, and urinary organic acids), and the electroencephalogram findings were all normal. In the course of a detailed interview, the parents reported having given 3 bottles to their child, each one containing 200 mL of an infusion with 4 to 5 fruits of star anise, in the hours preceding the symptoms to relieve colic pains. The last seizure-like event took place approximately 8h after the last ingestion. We could prove the ingestion of anisatin, the toxic substance found in Japanese star anise, and the contamination of Chinese star anise by the Japanese species. Indeed, the anisatin analysis by liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) in a urine sample taken 22 h after the last infusion ingestion showed trace amounts of the substance. In another urine sample taken 33 h after ingestion, no anisatin could be detected. Furthermore, the analysis of the fruit sample gave an anisatin concentration of 7800 μg/kg while the maximum tolerance value in Switzerland is 1000 μg/kg. CONCLUSION: The evaluation of ALTE in infants should always include the possibility of intoxication. Star anise is generally considered a harmless medicine. Nevertheless, it can sometimes cause a severe intoxication resulting in various neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms. To prevent such events, not only the parents, but also the care personnel and pharmacists must be informed about the possible adverse effects caused either by the overdose of Chinese star anise or by the eventual contamination of herbal teas with Japanese star anise. A better control of the substances by the health authorities is also necessary.
