The diphosphazane ligands of the type, (C20H12O2)PN(R)P(E)Y2 (R = CHMe2 or (S)-*CHMePh; E = lone pair or S; Y2 = O2C20H12 or Y = OC6H5 or OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H4OMe-4 or OC6H4But-4 or C6H5) bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2′-dioxy moiety have been synthesised. The structure and absolute configuration of a diastereomeric palladium complex, [PdCl2{ηsu2}-((O2C20H12)PN((S)-*CHMePh)PPh2] has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The reactions of [CpRu(PPh3)2Cl] with various symmetrical and unsymmetrical diphosphazanes of the type, X2PN(R)PYY′ (R = CHMe2 or (S)-*CHMePh; X = C6H5 or X2 = O2C20H12; Y=Y′= C6H5 or Y = C6H5, Y′ = OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H3Me2-3,5 or N2C3HMe2-3,5) yield several diastereomeric neutral or cationic half-sandwich ruthenium complexes which contain a stereogenic metal center. In one case, the absolute configuration of a trichiral ruthenium complex, viz. [Cp*Ruη2-Ph2PN((S)-*CHMePh)*PPh (N2C3HMe2-3,5)Cl] is established by X-ray diffraction. The reactions of Ru3(CO)12 with the diphosphazanes (C20H12O2)PN(R)PY2 (R = CHMe2orMe; Y2=O2C20H12or Y= OC6H5 or OC6H4Me-4 or OC6H4OMe-4 or OC6H4But-4 or C6H5) yield the triruthenium clusters [Ru3(CO)10{η-(O2C20H12)PN(R)PY2}], in which the diphosphazane ligand bridges two metal centres. Palladium allyl chemistry of some of these chiral ligands has been investigated. The structures of isomeric η3-allyl palladium complexes, [Pd(η3-l,3-R′2-C3H3){η2-(rac)-(02C20H12)PN(CHMe2)PY2}](PF6) (R′ = Me or Ph; Y = C6H5 or OC6H5) have been elucidated by high field two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies.

Glycine Phosphite [NH3CH2COOH3PO3], abbreviated as GPI, undergoes a para-ferroelectric phase transition from the monoclinic symmetry P2(1)/a to P2(1) at 224.7 K. We report here a systematic study of the polarization switching process in this crystal. Growth of these crystals from aqueous solution has been undertaken employing both solvent evaporation and slow cooling methods. Hysteresis loop measurements along the polar b-axis yielded a spontaneous polarization value of 0.5 muC/cm(2) and a coercive field of 2.5 kV/cm. Conventional Merz technique was employed for polarization switching studies, wherein bipolar square pulses were applied to the sample to induce domain reversal. The transient switching pulse that flows through the sample on application of the field was recorded. The maximum switching time required for domain switching was measured both as a function of electric field and temperature. The experimentally observed switching curves were fitted with the model based on the Pulvari-Kuebler theory of nucleation and growth of domains. From the experimental data, the values of mobility and activation field were obtained. It was observed that switching process in this crystal is predominantly governed by the forward growth of domain walls in the high field region. However, switching process in GPI crystal was found to be slower than that found in other glycine based ferroelectric crystals.

he thickness dependence of the electrical properties in the thin films of uniaxial SrBi2Nb2O9 has been studied in this report. According to many published literatures, it could be an effective way to identify the basic conduction process. The laser ablation was chosen as the deposition technique to ensure an oriented growth and a proper stoichiometric deposition. The structural, dielectric and conduction properties were studied as a function of thickness. The films showed good ferroelectric properties, an ordered growth, and a space-charge controlled conduction process, which was double checked by reversing the polarity of the applied voltage, and also by examining the high field current response of the sample varying in thickness.

The results of the studies on the effect of rare earth Nd doping on the phase formation behavior and electrical properties of sol-gel derived Pb-1.05(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O-3 (PZT) thin films are presented. The perovskite phase is obtained up to 5 at. % doping and beyond that pyrochlore phase was found to coexist with the perovskite phase in all the films. The transition temperature of undoped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) film was found to be reduced with Nd doping. The Nd doped films also exhibited typical relaxor-type behavior and a diffuse phase transition, similar to that observed in relaxor materials. The introduction of Nd into the PZT lattice probably introduces disorder in the B site of ABO(3) lattice, which causes the observed dielectric relaxation. Efforts were made to isolate the irreversible component contributions in low field dielectric and high field polarization switching behavior. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

We calculate the thermopower of monolayer graphene in various circumstances. We consider acoustic phonon scattering which might be the operative scattering mechanism in freestanding films and predict that the thermopower will be linear in any induced gap in the system. Further, the thermopower peaks at the same value of chemical potential (tunable by gate voltage) independent of the gap. We show that in the semiclassical approximation, the thermopower in a magnetic field saturates at high field to a value which can be calculated exactly and is independent of the details of the scattering. This effect might be observable experimentally. We also note that a Yukawa scattering potential can be used to fit experimental data for the thermopower for reasonable values of the screening length parameter.

In the last decade, there has been a tremendous interest in Graphene transistors. The greatest advantage for CMOS nanoelectronics applications is the fact that Graphene is compatible with planar CMOS technology and potentially offers excellent short channel properties. Because of the zero bandgap, it will not be possible to turn off the MOSFET efficiently and hence the typical on current to off current ratio (Ion/Ioff) has been less than 10. Several techniques have been proposed to open the bandgap in Graphene. It has been demonstrated, both theoretically and experimentally, that Graphene Nanoribbons (GNR) show a bandgap which is inversely proportional to their width. GNRs with about 20 nm width have bandgaps in the range of 100meV. But it is very difficult to obtain GNRs with well defined edges. An alternate technique to open the band gap is to use bilayer Graphene (BLG), with an asymmetric bias applied in the direction perpendicular to their plane. Another important CMOS metric, the subthreshold slope is also limited by the inability to turn off the transistor. However, these devices could be attractive for RF CMOS applications. But even for analog and RF applications the non-saturating behavior of the drain current can be an issue. Although some studies have reported current saturation, the mechanisms are still not very clear. In this talk we present some of our recent findings, based on simulations and experiments, and propose possible solutions to obtain high on current to off current ratio. A detailed study on high field transport in grapheme transistors, relevant for analog and RF applications will also be presented.

Magnon contribution to the resistance of ferromagnetic film like Permalloy is investigated by magnetotransport measurements. We are able to observe and distinguish Anisotropic-Magnetoresistance(AMR)(1) and Magnon Magnetoresistance(MMR)(2) contributions clearly in PLD grown Permalloy films. A linear non-saturating longitudinal MR observed in high field regime for permalloy films could never be explained using AMR but only MMR can account for it.

The formation and growth of continental crust in the Archean have been evaluated through models of subduction-accretion and mantle plume. The Nilgiri Block in southern India exposes exhumed Neoarchean lower crust, uplifted to heights of 2500 m above sea level along the north western margin of the Peninsula. Major lithologies in this block include charnockite with or without garnet, anorthosite-gabbro suite, pyroxenite, amphibolite and hornblende-biotite gneiss (TTG). All these rock types are closely associated as an arc magmatic suite, with diffuse boundaries and coeval nature. The charnockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) show SiO2 content varying from 64 to 73 wt.%. The hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) are high-Al type with Al2O3 >15 wt.% whereas the charnockites show Al2O3 <15 wt.%. The composition of charnockite is mainly magnesian and calcic to calc-alkaline. The mafic-ultramafic rocks show composition close to that of tholeiitic series. The low values of K(2)o (<3 wt.%), (K/Rb)/K2O (<500), Zr/Ti, and trace element ratios like (La/Yb)n/(Sr/Y), (Y/Nb), (Y + Nb)/Rb, (Y+Ta)/Rb, Yb/Ta indicate a volcanic arc signature for these rocks. The geochemical signature is consistent with arc magmatic rocks generated through oceanic plate subduction. The primitive mantle normalized trace element patterns of these rocks display enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and comparable high field strength elements (HFSE) in charnockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) consistent with subduction-related origin. Primitive mantle normalized REE pattern displays an enrichment in LREE in the chamockite and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) as compared to a flat pattern for the mafic rocks. The chondrite normalized REE patterns of zircons of all the rock types reveal cores with high HREE formed at ca. 2700 Ma and rims with low HREE formed at 2500-2450 Ma. Log-transformed La/Th-Nb/Th-Sm/Th-Yb/Th discrimination diagram for the mafic and ultramafic rocks from Nilgiri displays a transition from mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB) to island arc basalt (IAB) suggesting a MORB source. The U-Pb zircon data from the charnockites, mafic granulites and hornblende-biotite gneisses (TTG) presented in our study show that the magma generation during subduction and accretion events in this block occurred at 2700-2500 Ma. Together with the recent report on Neoarchean supra-subduction zone ophiolite suite at its southern margin, the Nilgiri Block provides one of the best examples for continental growth through vertical stacking and lateral accretion in a subduction environment during the Neoarchean. A novel peptide containing a single disulfide bond, CIWPWC (Vi804), has been isolated and characterised from the venom of the marine cone snail, Conus virgo. A precursor polypeptide sequence derived from complementary DNA, corresponding to the M-superfamily conotoxins, has been identified. The identity of the synthetic and natural peptide sequence has been established. A detailed analysis of the conformation in solution is reported for Vi804 and a synthetic analogue, (CIWPWC)-W-D ((D)W3-Vi804), in order to establish the structure of the novel WPW motif, which occurs in the context of a 20-membered macrocyclic disulfide. Vi804 exists exclusively in the cis W3P4 conformer in water and methanol, whereas (D)W3-Vi804 occurs exclusively as the trans conformer. NMR spectra revealed a W3P4 typeVI turn in Vi804 and a typeII turn in the analogue peptide, (D)W3-Vi804. The extremely high-field chemical shifts of the proline ring protons, together with specific nuclear Overhauser effects, are used to establish a conformation in which the proline ring is sandwiched between the flanking Trp residues, which emphasises a stabilising role for the aromatic-proline interactions, mediated predominantly by dispersion forces.

The primary role of substituted side chains in organic semiconductors is to increase their solubility in common organic solvents. In the recent past, many literature reports have suggested that the side chains play a critical role in molecular packing and strongly impact the charge transport properties of conjugated polymers. In this work, we have investigated the influence of side-chains on the charge transport behavior of a novel class of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) based alternating copolymers. To investigate the role of side-chains, we prepared four diketopyrrolopyrrole-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP-DPP) conjugated polymers with varied side-chains and carried out a systematic study of thin film microstructure and charge transport properties in polymer thin-film transistors (PTFTs). Combining results obtained from grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) and charge transport properties in PTFTs, we conclude side-chains have a strong influence on molecular packing, thin film microstructure, and the charge carrier mobility of DPP-DPP copolymers. However, the influence of side-chains on optical properties was moderate. The preferential ``edge-on'' packing and dominant n-channel behavior with exceptionally high field-effect electron mobility values of >1 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) were observed by incorporating hydrophilic (triethylene glycol) and hydrophobic side-chains of alternate DPP units. In contrast moderate electron and hole mobilities were observed by incorporation of branched hydrophobic side-chains. This work clearly demonstrates that the subtle balance between hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity induced by side-chains is a powerful strategy to alter the molecular packing and improve the ambipolar charge transport properties in DPP-DPP based conjugated polymers. Theoretical analysis supports the conclusion that the side-chains influence polymer properties through morphology changes, as there is no effect on the electronic properties in the gas phase. The exceptional electron mobility is at least partially a result of the strong intramolecular conjugation of the donor and acceptor as evidenced by the unusually wide conduction band of the polymer.

The crystal structure, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric behaviors of the Ba(Ti1-xCex)O-3 solid solution have been investigated at close composition intervals in the dilute concentration regime. Ce concentration as low as 2 mol. % induces tetragonal-orthorhombic instability and coexistence of the phases, leading to enhanced high-field strain and direct piezoelectric response. Detailed structural analysis revealed tetragonal + orthorhombic phase coexistence for x = 0.02, orthorhombic for 0.03 <= x <= 0.05, and orthorhombic + rhombohedral for 0.06 <= x <= 0.08. The results suggest that Ce-modified BaTiO3 is a potential lead-free piezoelectric material. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

The high-field properties of polycrystalline superconducting TlBaCaCuO films fabricated by the incorporation of thallium vapour into air-atomised BaCaCuO precursors are described. Thick films with Tc values in the range 106-111 K have been prepared on polycrystalline yttria-stabilised zirconia substrates. The surface morphology, crystal structure and composition of the films are related to their high-field transport and magnetisation properties. Typical 10 mm × 9 mm films show Jc values > 1×104 A/cm2 at 77 K (0 T). The best film has a Jc=1.3×104 A/cm2 (Ic=3.6 A) at 77 K (0 T). Films prepared on 26 mm×9 mm substrates show typical large-area Jc values > 0.5×104 A/cm2 (77 K, 0 T). A square planar specimen of dimensions 4.3 mm ×4.3 mm exhibited magnetisation Jc values=1.2×105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K (0.1 T), 9.3×104 A/cm2 at 10 K (0.1 T), 3.3×104 A/ cm2 at 4 K (8 T), and 1.6×104 A/cm2 at 10 K (8 T). © 1994.

It is shown that in a closed equispaced three-level ladder system, by controlling the relative phase of two applied coherent fields, the conversion from absorption with inversion to lasing without inversion (LWI) can be realized; a large index of the refraction with zero absorption can be gotten; considerable increasing of the spectrum region and value of the LWI gain can be achieved. Our study also reveals that the incoherent pumping will produce a remarkable effect oil the phase-dependent properties of the system. Modifying value of the incoherent pumping can change the property of the system from absorption to amplification and enhance significantly LWI gain. If the incoherent pumping is absent, we cannot get any gain for any value of the relative phase. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Two-cycle optical pulses with duration of 5 fs and energy of 0.7 mJ have been generated at 1 kHz by compressing the 38 fs laser pulses from a carrier-envelope phase (CEP) controlled Ti:sapphire laser system through a cascade filamentation compression technique. A simple and effective method is developed to suppress multiple filament formation and stabilize a single filament by inserting a soft aperture with an appropriate diameter into the driving laser beam prior to focusing, resulting in an excellent compressed beam quality. The good beam quality and potentially higher peak power make this ultrashort laser pulse source a significant tool for high-field physics applications. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America.
