This paper highlights the importance of surface coverage in modeling the removal of particles in deep bed filtration. A model that considers the saturation of sites on which particle deposition occurs is used. Experimental results obtained with monodispersed suspensions of 0.46 and 0.816 μm latex particles at different influent concentrations and ionic strengths were used to calculate the fraction of filter grain surface (β1) on which actual particle deposition occurs. This will be useful in evaluating the filter performance in terms of the utilization of available surface area of the filter medium. Further, the level of dendrite formation of particles on filter grains during filtration is expressed in terms of β1 and the specific surface coverage, θT (the fraction of a filter grain surface that is covered by particles at time T, assuming that the filter grain is covered by a monolayer of particles). This can be used to compare the contribution of deposited particles in the removal efficiency of deep bed filtration for suspensions with different physical and chemical characteristics.

In this study, the high rate filtration system using buoyant medium of polypropylene or polystyrene was introduced with the study on its performance evaluation via: (i) specific surface coverage, (ii) ultimate specific deposit, (iii) blocking effect and (iv) particle detachment. The filter system was arranged in the downflow mode with an in-line flocculation. Experimental results obtained were analyzed using filtration models. This study showed that: (i) the specific surface coverage increased with the increase in the velocity; (ii) the ultimate specific deposit changed slightly at different filtration velocities and different flocculants; (iii) the blocking effect was significant in the transient stage removal of flocs; and (iv) the detachment model parameter was found to decrease with the increase in the adhesive force, Fad that acts on the flocs (above-micron size).

This study was carried out to investigate the treatment of various salt solutions and synthetic dye bath liquors by nanofiltration using Nanomax-50 membrane in a stirred cell with 150 mL working volume. Donnan exclusion was compared by filtering salts with monovalent and divalent cations and anions. This was done by comparing three salts including sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium sulphate (Na2SO4). The rejection order determined was Na2SO4>NaCl>CaCl2 which is typical of a negatively charged membrane where Donnan and steric exclusion play an important role in separation. Studies on the flux and rejection characteristics of sodium sulphate were undertaken for concentrations ranging from 10 to 40 gl−1 thereby replicating actual dye bath salt concentrations. Synthetic dye bath liquors were prepared using acidic dye (Acid Green 25) at a fixed concentration of 100 mgl−1 with 10 and 15 gl−1 of sodium sulphate solutions. While, the results showed evidence of flux decline due to increased resistance and decreased transmembrane pressure, pore enlargement occurred after the filtration experiments with sodium sulphate solutions greater than 20 gl−1. Pore enlargement was even more prominent in the two synthetic dye bath liquors filtered. Pore enlargement was determined by observing the pure water flux before and after filtering sodium sulphate solutions or dye bath liquors. An increase in pore diameter of 58 and 94 %was estimated when dye bath liquors containing 10 and 15 gl−1 of sodium sulphate, respectively were filtered through the membrane. The following equation was derived in estimating the pore enlargement, where de1 and de2 are the apparent diameter of membrane pore sizes before and after filtration of salt solutions or dye bath liquors and Rm1 and Rm2 are the membrane resistance of pure water flux before and after filtration of salt solutions or dye bath liquors. These results have important implications for the application of nanofiltration technology to textile wastewater treatment and reuse.

Particle size and size distribution is an important parameter in solid liquid separation process especially in granular bed filtration and in dynamic microfiltration. This paper discusses their effects on the above processes from extensive experimental data obtained. In granular bed filtration, the experimental results showed that the initial efficiency follows the pattern reported by previous experimental and theoretical studies, i.e., lower efficiency for particles which fall in the range of critical size of 1 m. However, the particle removal during the transient stage increased with an increase in particle size for the range of sizes studied. An attempt was made to quantify these effects in granular bed filtration using semi-empirical approach. In dynamic membrane filtration also, the particle size plays a major role in the retention. However, despite the relative thickness of the membrane (compared to particle size) dynamic microfiltration appears more as a sieving process; the retention is mainly related to the largest pore size.

Four different cellulose nanofibers samples were prepared from northern bleached softwood kraft fibers. Fiber diameter distributions were measured from SEM images. Fiber aspect ratios ranging from 84 to 146 were estimated from fiber suspension sedimentation measurements. Three samples had heterogeneous distributions of fiber diameters, while one sample was more homogeneous. Sheet forming experiments using filters with pores ranging from 150 to 5 μm showed that the samples with a heterogeneous distribution of fiber dimensions could be easily formed into sheets at 0. 2% initial solids concentration with all filter openings. On the other hand, sheets could only be formed from the homogenous sample by using 0. 5% or more initial solids content and a lower applied vacuum and smaller filter openings. The forming data and estimated aspect ratios show reasonable agreement with the predictions of the crowding number and percolation theories for the connectivity and rigidity thresholds for fiber suspensions.

Membrane filtration in municipal wastewater treatment is being increasingly used to improve the quality of water and increase the productivity of existing plants. However, membrane fouling encountered in reclamation of municipal wastewater represents serious design and operational concern. There are several fouling models which are being developed and used as a powerful tool to increase the understanding of the fouling mechanisms and its key characteristics that influence the design of optimal process and operating conditions. This study investigates and compares the fouling mechanisms of three different types of polymeric and ceramic ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF) membranes in the recovery of water from secondary effluent. The result demonstrated that ceramic UF membrane produced very high quality of water compared to polymeric UF and ceramic MF membranes. Out of four fouling models used to fit the experimental flux data, cake filtration and pore narrowing and complete pore blocking models predicted the initial fluxes of polymeric UF membrane more accurately. On the other hand, the cake filtration and pore narrowing models predicted the performance of ceramic UF membrane. Whereas, pore narrowing model predicted the performance of ceramic MF membrane more precisely compared to other three models. Further, the application of unified membrane fouling index (UMFI) was used to assess the fouling potential of the membranes. Good agreement between UMFI and other models was found. © 2013 Copyright Balaban Desalination Publications.

The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey has analysed over 160 000 plankton samples taken in the North East Atlantic over the last 60 years. However, flowmeters have not been routinely fitted to the recorders and there has been the implicit assumption that a CPR sample represents the organisms filtered from 3 m3 of sea water. We describe an electromagnetic flowmeter designed for the CPR and present results which show that on occasions the filtered volume per sample varied significantly from this value.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of membrane filtration in removing natural organic matters (NOMs) from four different source waters and the subsequent effect that it has on total chlorine (TC) demand of these waters. Source water samples were filtered sequentially through membranes with molecular weight cut-off of 3,500, 1,000 and 200 Da as well as RO membrane. The source waters and sequentially filtered samples were dosed with chlorine and the residual chlorine data were used to estimate the TC demand of these waters. A robust chlorine decay model constructed in AQUASIM software was used to do so. More than 80% of the chlorine demand in untreated surface water sources was found to be contributed mainly by NOMs that were larger than 3,500 Da. However, for water treated by granular filtration, the chlorine demand was found to be contributed by NOMs which were down to 200 Da. Sequential filtration through all four membranes reduced chlorine demand by more than 94% in surface waters and 84% in waters treated by granular filtration. Significant reduction in the formation of trihalomethane can be achieved if water is treated by appropriate membranes after granular media filtration. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications.
