An attempt is made to study the two dimensional (2D) effective electron mass (EEM) in quantum wells (Qws), inversion layers (ILs) and NIPI superlattices of Kane type semiconductors in the presence of strong external photoexcitation on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion laws within the framework of k.p. formalism. It has been found, taking InAs and InSb as examples, that the EEM in Qws, ILs and superlattices increases with increasing concentration, light intensity and wavelength of the incident light waves, respectively and the numerical magnitudes in each case is band structure dependent. The EEM in ILs is quantum number dependent exhibiting quantum jumps for specified values of the surface electric field and in NIPI superlattices; the same is the function of Fermi energy and the subband index characterizing such 2D structures. The appearance of the humps of the respective curves is due to the redistribution of the electrons among the quantized energy levels when the quantum numbers corresponding to the highest occupied level changes from one fixed value to the others. Although the EEM varies in various manners with all the variables as evident from all the curves, the rates of variations totally depend on the specific dispersion relation of the particular 2D structure. Under certain limiting conditions, all the results as derived in this paper get transformed into well known formulas of the EEM and the electron statistics in the absence of external photo-excitation and thus confirming the compatibility test. The results of this paper find three applications in the field of microstructures. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper. An imbalance between breakup and coalescence of drops in turbulent liquid-liquid dispersions leads to inversion of phases the dispersed phase becomes continuous and vice versa. An increase in the rate of coalescence of drops is expected to decrease the dispersed phase fraction at which inversion occurs. In the present work, we increased the rate of coalescence of drops by adding electrolyte to pure liquid-liquid dispersions. The experiments carried out for three representative liquid-liquid systems show that contrary to the expectation the addition of an electrolyte increases the dispersed phase fraction at which inversion occurs for both, oil-in-water and water-in-oil dispersions. The step-down experiments confirm that the addition of the electrolyte increases the rate of coalescence of drops in lean dispersions under the same conditions, thereby confirming an anomalous effect of the presence of an electrolyte on the stability of dispersions. Levy flights can be described using a Fokker-Planck equation, which involves a fractional derivative operator in the position coordinate. Such an operator has its natural expression in the Fourier domain. Starting with this, we show that the solution of the equation can be written as a Hamiltonian path integral. Though this has been realized in the literature, the method has not found applications as the path integral appears difficult to evaluate. We show that a method in which one integrates over the position coordinates first, after which integration is performed over the momentum coordinates, can be used to evaluate several path integrals that are of interest. Using this, we evaluate the propagators for (a) free particle, (b) particle subjected to a linear potential, and (c) harmonic potential. In all the three cases, we have obtained results for both overdamped and underdamped cases. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.86.061105

Design of a dual band pass filter employing microstrip line with defected ground is presented in this paper. A dual band filter at 2.45GHz and 3.5GHz (covering WLAN and WiMAX) with 6% bandwidth has been designed at each frequency. Apertures in ground plane were used to improve the stop band rejection characteristics and coupling levels in the filter. Measured results of the experimental filter were compared against the simulation results for the purpose of validation.

In this paper we propose a postprocessing technique for a spectrogram diffusion based harmonic/percussion decom- position algorithm. The proposed technique removes har- monic instrument leakages in the percussion enhanced out- puts of the baseline algorithm. The technique uses median filtering and an adaptive detection of percussive segments in subbands followed by piecewise signal reconstruction using envelope properties to ensure that percussion is enhanced while harmonic leakages are suppressed. A new binary mask is created for the percussion signal which upon applying on the original signal improves harmonic versus percussion separation. We compare our algorithm with two recent techniques and show that on a database of polyphonic Indian music, the postprocessing algorithm improves the harmonic versus percussion decomposition significantly.

The inverse problem in photoacoustic tomography (PAT) seeks to obtain the absorbed energy map from the boundary pressure measurements for which computationally intensive iterative algorithms exist. The computational challenge is heightened when the reconstruction is done using boundary data split into its frequency spectrum to improve source localization and conditioning of the inverse problem. The key idea of this work is to modify the update equation wherein the Jacobian and the perturbation in data are summed over all wave numbers, k, and inverted only once to recover the absorbed energy map. This leads to a considerable reduction in the overall computation time. The results obtained using simulated data, demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed scheme without compromising the accuracy of reconstruction.

A sequence of moments obtained from statistical trials encodes a classical probability distribution. However, it is well known that an incompatible set of moments arises in the quantum scenario, when correlation outcomes associated with measurements on spatially separated entangled states are considered. This feature, viz., the incompatibility of moments with a joint probability distribution, is reflected in the violation of Bell inequalities. Here, we focus on sequential measurements on a single quantum system and investigate if moments and joint probabilities are compatible with each other. By considering sequential measurement of a dichotomic dynamical observable at three different time intervals, we explicitly demonstrate that the moments and the probabilities are inconsistent with each other. Experimental results using a nuclear magnetic resonance system are reported here to corroborate these theoretical observations, viz., the incompatibility of the three-time joint probabilities with those extracted from the moment sequence when sequential measurements on a single-qubit system are considered.

This paper presents an advanced single network adaptive critic (SNAC) aided nonlinear dynamic inversion (NDI) approach for simultaneous attitude control and trajectory tracking of a micro-quadrotor. Control of micro-quadrotors is a challenging problem due to its small size, strong coupling in pitch-yaw-roll and aerodynamic effects that often need to be ignored in the control design process to avoid mathematical complexities. In the proposed SNAC aided NDI approach, the gains of the dynamic inversion design are selected in such a way that the resulting controller behaves closely to a pre-synthesized SNAC controller for the output regulation problem. However, since SNAC is based on optimal control theory, it makes the dynamic inversion controller to operate near optimal and enhances its robustness property as well. More important, it retains two major benefits of dynamic inversion: (i) closed form expression of the controller and (ii) easy scalability to command tracking application even without any apriori knowledge of the reference command. Effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated from six degree-of-freedom simulation studies of a micro-quadrotor. It has also been observed that the proposed SNAC aided NDI approach is more robust to modeling inaccuracies, as compared to the NDI controller designed independently from time domain specifications.

The voltage ripple and power loss in the DC-capacitor of a voltage source inverter depend on the harmonic currents flowing through the capacitor. This paper presents double Fourier series based harmonic analysis of DC capacitor current in a three-level neutral point clamped inverter, modulated with sine-triangle PWM. The analytical results are validated experimentally on a 5-kVA three-level inverter prototype. The results of the analysis are used for predicting the power loss in the DC capacitor.

The basic requirement for an autopilot is fast response and minimum steady state error for better guidance performance. The highly nonlinear nature of the missile dynamics due to the severe kinematic and inertial coupling of the missile airframe as well as the aerodynamics has been a challenge for an autopilot that is required to have satisfactory performance for all flight conditions in probable engagements. Dynamic inversion is very popular nonlinear controller for this kind of scenario. But the drawback of this controller is that it is sensitive to parameter perturbation. To overcome this problem, neural network has been used to capture the parameter uncertainty on line. The choice of basis function plays the major role in capturing the unknown dynamics. Here in this paper, many basis function has been studied for approximation of unknown dynamics. Cosine basis function has yield the best response compared to any other basis function for capturing the unknown dynamics. Neural network with Cosine basis function has improved the autopilot performance as well as robustness compared to Dynamic inversion without Neural network.

ZnS quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes are synthesized by a simple chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature, by varying pH value of the reaction mixture. Samples are characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, etc. Linear optical properties, including UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence emission characteristics, of as-prepared QDs are measured. Size dependent nonlinear optical property, such as second harmonic generation (SHG) of 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser fundamental radiation in the synthesized ZnS QDs, is reported for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, by using the standard Kurtz-Perry powder method. In not to study the possibility of the synthesized ZnS QDs in different device applications ZnS/PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) nanocomposites are also synthesized. The presence of weak chemical interaction between the polymer matrix and ZnS QDs is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites are studied by differential scanning calorimetry and thermo-gravimetric analysis techniques, which show that the composites are stable up to similar to 300 degrees C temperature. Voltage source inverter (VSI) fed six-phase induction motor drives have high 6n +/- 1; n = odd order harmonic currents, due to absence of back emf for these currents. To suppress these harmonic currents, either bulky inductive harmonic filters or complex pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have to be used. This paper proposes a simple harmonic elimination scheme using capacitor fed inverters, for an asymmetrical six-phase induction motor VSI fed drive. Two three phase inverters fed from a single capacitor is used on the open-end side of the motor, to suppress 6n +/- 1; n = odd order harmonics. A PWM scheme that can suppress the harmonics, as well as balance the capacitor voltage is also proposed. The capacitor fed inverters are switched so that the fundamental voltage is not affected. The proposed scheme is verified using MATLAB Simulink simulation at different speeds. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained by disabling the capacitor fed inverters. Experimental results are also provided to validate the functionality of the proposed controller.
