The kinetics of the NO SCR with propane has been studied on a low-exchanged Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst. The study of the kinetics of individual reaction stages (2-nitrosopropane isomerization to acetone oxime and reaction of adsorbed acetone oxime with gaseous NO) has shown that the NO reaction with acetone oxime is the rate-determining stage in the whole chain of transformations leading to the formation of molecular nitrogen in the low-temperature region below 300 C-degrees. The kinetic analysis of the reaction has revealed that at the temperatures above 300(degrees)C propane plays a more important role.

The role of gaseous NO and C3H8 has been studied over low-exchanged Cu-ZSM-5 zeolite employing TPD, FTIR and pulse technique with the alternate introduction of NO or C3H8 onto the catalyst surface. The rate of the N-2 formation is directly proportional to the content of gaseous NO and the surface coverage with 2-nitrosopropane. There was no formation of N-2 during interaction of gaseous C3H8 with NO adsorbates. However, 2-nitrosopropane and its isomer acetone oxime were also formed in this reaction.

A surface intermediate with a C/N ratio close to 3 has been shown by TPD to form at co-adsorption of NO and propane as well as NO, propane and O-2 On low-exchanged Cu-ZSM-5. The adsorption of NO, propane and oxygen has been studied to evaluate their effect on the formation of this complex. Its formation is accompanied by a decrease in the concentration of surface nitrite-nitrate. The kinetics of nitrite-nitrate adspecies formation as a function of the reagents concentration and temperature has been investigated. Some NO adspecies have been found to decompose yielding N2O.

An elegant way to prepare catalytically active microreactors is by applying a coating of zeolite crystals onto a metal microchannel structure. In this study the hydrothermal formation of ZSM-5 zeolitic coatings on AISI 316 stainless steel plates with a microchannel structure has been investigated at different synthesis mixture compositions. The procedures of coating and thermal treatment have also been optimized. Obtaining a uniform thickness of the coating within 0.5 mm wide microchannels requires a careful control of various synthesis variables. The role of these factors and the problems in the synthesis of these zeolitic coatings are discussed. In general, the synthesis is most sensitive to the H2O/Si ratio as well as to the orientation of the plates with respect to the gravity vector. Ratios of H2O/Si=130 and Si/template=13 were found to be optimal for the formation of a zeolitic film with a thickness of one crystal at a temperature of 130 degreesC and a synthesis time of about 35 h. At such conditions, ZSM-5 crystals were formed with a typical size of 1.5 mu mx1.5 mu mx1.0 mum and a very narrow (within 0.2 mum) crystal size distribution. The prepared samples proved to be active in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia. The activity tests have been carried out in a plate-type microreactor. The microreactor shows no mass transfer limitations and a larger SCR reaction rate is observed in comparison with pelletized Ce-ZSM-5 catalysts; (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Samples of Zn/H-ZSM-5 zeolite were prepared by impregnation of the parent zeolite with Zn(NO3)(2). The state of zinc in the samples was analyzed by XPS measurements, (ald the degree of reduction for the zinc oxide on the ZSM-5 zeolite surface in hydrogen atmosphere was determined, as well as the influence of this reducing treatment upon the activity and selectivity for aromatics of zeolites in aromatization of cyclohexane. It resulted that the degree of reduction depends on the concentration of zinc in the zeolite and is influenced by the presence of alumina binder. The results of the activity and selectivity to aromatics were correlated with the reduction of zinc oxide.

Herein we investigate the use of CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 (CZA) with different solid acid catalysts (NH(4)ZSM-5. HZSM-5 or gamma-Al2O3) for the production of dimethyl ether from syngas. It was found that of the solid acids, which are necessary for the dehydration function of the admixed system, the CZA/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst with a 0.25 acid fraction showed high stability over a continuous period of 212 h.
As this particular system was observed to loose around 16.2% of its initial activity over this operating period this study further investigates the CZA/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst in terms of its deactivation mechanisms. TPO investigations showed that the catalyst deactivation was related to coke deposited on the metallic sites: interface between the metallic sites and the support near the metal-support: and on the support itself.

A series of iron containing zeolites with varying Si/Al ratios (11.5-140) and low iron content (similar to 0.9 wt.% Fe) have been synthesised by solid-state ion exchange with commercially available zeolites and tested, for the first time, in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) with N2O. The samples were characterised by XRD, N-2-Adsorption, NH3-TPD and DR-UV-vis spectroscopy. The acidity of the Fe-ZSM-5 can be controlled by high temperature and steam treatments and Si/Al ratio. The selectivity and yield of propene were found to be the highest over Fe-ZSM-5 with low Al contents and reduced acidity. The initial propene yield over Fe-ZSM-5 was significantly higher than that of Fe-SiO2 since the presence of weak and/or medium acid sites together with oligonuclear iron species and iron oxides on the ZSM-5 are found to enhance the N2O activation. The coking of Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts could also be controlled by reduction of the surface acidity of ZSM-5 and by the use of O-2 in addition to N2O as the oxidant. Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared with solid-state method have been shown to have comparable activity and better stability towards coking compared with Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared by liquid ion exchange and hydrothermal synthesis methods. Hierarchical Fe/ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized with a diquaternary ammonium surfactant containing a hydrophobic tail and extensively characterized by XRD, Ar porosimetry, TEM, DRUV-Vis, and UV-Raman spectroscopy. Their catalytic activities in catalytic decomposition of NO and the oxidation of benzene to phenol with NO as the oxidant were also determined. The hierarchical zeolites consist of thin sheets limited in growth in the b-direction (along the straight channels of the MFI network) and exhibit similar high hydrothermal stability as a reference Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite. Spectroscopic and catalytic investigations point to subtle differences in the extent of Fe agglomeration with the sheet-like zeolites having a higher proportion of isolated Fe centers than the reference zeolite. As a consequence, these zeolites have a somewhat lower activity in catalytic NO decomposition (catalyzed by oligomeric Fe), but display higher activity in benzene oxidation (catalyzed by monomeric Fe). The sheet-like zeolites deactivate much slower than bulk Fe/ZSM-5, which is attributed to the much lower probability of secondary reactions of phenol in the short straight channels of the sheets. The deactivation rate decreases with decreasing Fe content of the Fe/ZSM-5 nanosheets. It is found that carbonaceous materials are mainly deposited in the mesopores between the nanosheets and much less so in the micropores. This contrasts the strong decrease in the micropore volume of bulk Fe/ZSM-5 due to rapid clogging of the continuous micropore network. The formation of coke deposits is limited in the nanosheet zeolites because of the short molecular trafficking distances. It is argued that at high Si/Fe content, coke deposits mainly form on the external surface of the nanosheets. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The acidic properties of nanolayered ZSM-5 zeolites synthesized with the aid of multiquaternary ammonium surfactants were investigated in detail. A substantial fraction of Al is present in highly dispersed form at extraframework positions indicative of the defective nature of the calcined nanolayered zeolites. Acidity characterization reveals that the Brønsted acid sites are similar in strength to those in bulk HZSM-5. Nanolayered zeolites contain a higher amount of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) at their external (mesopore) surface. Unilamellar zeolites have a higher concentration of external BA and silanol sites than multilamellar ones. The number of BAS in the nanolayered zeolites is considerably lower than the tetrahedral Al content, the difference increasing with nanolayer thickness. Except for one particular sample (nanolayered ZSM-5 synthesized from COH template), the total turnover of methanol normalized per BAS trends inversely with the concentration of BAS. There is no correlation with the concentration of external BAS. Catalyst deactivation due to coke mainly depends on the BAS concentration. A unilamellar ZSM-5 zeolite prepared using COH displayed substantially improved performance in terms of a much lower rate of coke deactivation in line with earlier data Choi et al. [10]. Since the acidic and textural properties of this zeolite did not differ significantly from the others, it remains to be determined why this zeolite performs so much better. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A low temperature, isothermal, gas-phase, recyclable process is described for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol over Cu–ZSM-5. Activation in NO at 150 °C followed by methane reaction and steam extraction (both at 150 °C) allowed direct observation of methanol at the reactor outlet.

The mono(μ-oxo) dicopper cores present in the pores of Cu-ZSM-5 are active for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol. However, copper on the external surface reduces the ratio of active, selective sites to unselective sites. More efficient catalysts are obtained by controlling the copper deposition during synthesis. Herein, the external exchange sites of ZSM-5 samples were passivated by bis(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) followed by calcination, promoting selective deposition of intraporous copper during aqueous copper ion exchange. At an optimum level of 1–2 wt % SiO2, IR studies showed a 64 % relative reduction in external copper species and temperature-programmed oxidation analysis showed an associated increase in the formation of methanol compared with unmodified Cu-ZSM-5 samples. It is, therefore, reported that the modified zeolites contained a significantly higher proportion of active, selective copper species than their unmodified counterparts with activity for partial methane oxidation to methanol.

We present a theoretical study of the distribution of Al atoms in zeolite ZSM-5 with Si/Al=47, where we focus on the role of Al-Al interactions rather than on the energetics of Al/Si substitutions at individual sites. Using interatomic potential methods, we evaluate the energies of the full set of symmetrically independent configurations of Al siting in a Si94Al2O192 cell. The equilibrium Al distribution is determined by the interplay of two factors: the energetics of the Al/Si substitution at an individual site, which tends to populate particular T sites (e.g. the T14 site), and the Al-Al interaction, which at this Si/Al maximises Al-Al distances in agreement with Dempsey’s rule. However, it is found that the interaction energy changes approximately as the inverse of the square of the distance between the two Al atoms, rather than the inverse of the distance expected if this were merely charge repulsion. Moreover, we find that the anisotropic nature of the framework density plays an important role in determining the magnitude of the interactions, which are not simply dependent on Al-Al distances.
