Bulk novel cemented carbides (W1-xAlx)C-10.1 vol% Co (x = 0.2, 0.33, 0.4, 0.5) are prepared by mechanical alloying and hot-pressing sintering. Hot-pressing (HP) is used to fabricate the bulk bodies of the hard alloys. The novel cemented carbides have good mechanical properties compared with WC-Co. The density and operating cost of the novel material is much lower than a WC-Co system. The material is easy to process and the processing leads to nano-scaled, rounded, particles in the bulk material. The hardness of (W1-xAlx)C-10.1 vol% Co (x = 0.2, 0.33, 0.4, 0.5) hard material is 20.37, 21.16, 21.59 and 22.16 GPa, and the bending strength is 1257, 1238, 1211 and 1293 MPa, with the aluminum content varying from 20% to 50%. The relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the novel hard alloy is also discussed.

A novel supramolecular inclusion complex of alpha-CD/C-60 was synthesized using anionic C-60. The reaction progress was monitored in situ by visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The obtained complex was characterized by UV-vis, C-13 NMR, MALDI-TOF, and cyclic voltammetry. The induction and dispersion forces are considered to be the major driving forces for the formation of a resulting alpha-CD/C-60(.-) inclusion complex.

The condensation and sulfonation of furfuryl alcohol (FA) and FA with tris (2-hydroxyethyl) isocyanurate (THEIC) and the crosslinking product structures were studied by means of solid-state C-13 NMR. The reaction of formalin with FA linear oligomer terminated by 2-methyl furan took place in the presence of the phase transfer catalyst (C4H9)4N+I-. The reaction of the terminated oligomer with a large amount of sulfuric acid as well as the former reaction was examined. The effects of some main reaction conditions on the crosslinking condensation and sulfonation were also discussed.

The Continuous Plankton Recorder has been deployed in the NE Pacic on two intersecting transects since 2000. Many deployments included a temperature sensor providing in situ temperature data to supplement the species abundance data for 1300 samples. Twenty-nine copepod taxa were sufciently abundant to examine their temperature-related distributions. Groups of warm- and cold-water species were identied, with overlapping distributions between 48 and 588N. Recent uctuations in ocean climate, from the warmest year on record in 2005 to one of the coldest in decades in 2008, provided ideal conditions to observe temperature-related interannual variability. The abundance and northwards extension of warm water species were signicantly positively correlated with mean annual temperature and the Pacic Decadal Oscillation. The cold water species showed no correlations with temperature/Pacic Decadal Oscillation (PDO) within the study region; however, if the 4 years of sampling that extended south to 398N were examined separately, there was a strong relationship between temperature/PDO and the southern extent of subarctic copepods. Under warm ocean conditions, the range overlap of the two groups will increase as warm water species extend northwards, causing an increase in copepod diversity. Since warm water species are generally smaller and nutritionally poorer, this has implications for higher trophic levels

The relative sensitivity of neoplastic cells to DNA damaging agents is a key factor in cancer therapy. In this paper, we show that pretreatment of Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines expressing the c-met protooncogene with hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) protects them from death induced by DNA damaging agents commonly used in tumour therapy. This protection was observed in assays based on morphological assessment of apoptotic cells and DNA fragmentation assays. The protection was dose- and time-dependent maximal protection requiring pre-incubation with 100 ng/ml HGF for 48 h. Western blotting analysis and flow cytometric studies revealed that HGF inhibited doxorubicin- and etoposide-induced decreases in the levels of the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-XL, and to a lesser extent Bcl-2, without inducing changes in the pro-apoptotic Bax protein. Overall, these studies suggest that the accumulation of HGF within the microenvironment of neoplastic cells may contribute to the development of a chemoresistant phenotype.

Greek literature was used from early times with educational purposes, Greek heroes presented were considered as paradigms to follow. However, human acts burst beyond reason and the stories told have little effect on the decisions of the receptor. The aim of this article is to review the character of Achilles in the Iliad, because for him to no avail gifts, friends, much less a narration by his preceptor Phoenix to depose his anger and return to the battlefield to assist his friends.

Absolute and differential chemical abundances are presented for the largest group of massive stars in M31 studied to date. These results were derived from intermediate resolution spectra of seven B-type supergiants, lying within four OB associations covering a galactocentric distance of 5-12 kpc. The results are mainly based on an LTE analysis, and we additionally present a full non-LTE, unified model atmosphere analysis of one star (OB 78-277) to demonstrate the reliability of the differential LTE technique. A comparison of the stellar oxygen abundance with that of previous nebular results shows that there is an off set of between similar to0.15-0.4 dex between the two methods which is critically dependent on the empirical calibration adopted for the R 23 parameter with [O/H]. However within the typical errors of the stellar and nebular analyses (and given the strength of dependence of the nebular results on the calibration used) the oxygen abundances determined in each method are fairly consistent. We determine the radial oxygen abundance gradient from these stars, and do not detect any systematic gradient across this galactocentric range. We find that the inner regions of M31 are not, as previously thought, very "metal rich". Our abundances of C, N, O, Mg, Si, Al, S and Fe in the M31 supergiants are very similar to those of massive stars in the solar neighbourhood.

Anisotropic metamaterials composed of 2D periodic infi- nite and finite periodic lattices of lumped inductor (L) and capacitor (C) circuits have been explored. The unique features of wave channeling on such anisotropic lattices and scattering at their interfaces and edges are reviewed and illustrated by the examples of the specific arrangements. The lattice unit cells composed of inductors and capacitors (basic mesh) as well as of assemblies comprised of double series, double parallel, and mixed parallel-series L-C circuits are discussed.

Rheologically structured vehicle (RSV) gels were developed as delivery systems for vaginal mucosal vaccination with an HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (CN54gp140). RSVs comprised a mucoadhesive matrix forming and vaginal fluid absorbing polymer. The mucoadhesive and rheological properties of the RSVs were evaluated in vitro, and the distribution, antigenicity and release of CN54gp140 were analysed by ELISA. CN54gp140 was uniformly distributed within the RSVs and continuously released in vitro in an antigenically intact form over 24 h. Vaginal administration to rabbits induced specific serum IgG, and IgG and IgA in genital tract secretions. The RSVs are a viable delivery modality for vaginal immunization.

Amphibian skin secretions are rich sources of cationic amphipathic peptides which often possess potent and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, the venoms of other animals such as hymenopteran insects, also contain peptides with these characteristics and the literature is unclear as to their antimicrobial potential. Here we subjected the venom of the European hornet, Vespa crabro, to reverse phase HPLC fractionation followed by screening of aliquots of individual fractions in bacterial zonal inhibition assays. Two major peptides possessing activity in these assays were further purified by HPLC and subjected to MALDI-TOF MS analysis and MS/MS fragmentation using an ESI mass spectrometer. The peptides were identified as mastoparan C (LNLKALLAVAKKILamide) and crabrolin (FLPLILRKIVTALamide). Replicates of both peptides were synthesised by solid-phase methodology and mean inhibitory concentrations (MICs) established against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Mastoparan C was found to be a potent antimicrobial with MIC values of 2 M and 4 M against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Crabrolin was found to be less potent with MIC values of > 160 M and 40 M for S. aureus and E. coli. Hornet venom thus contains a potent antimicrobial peptide that has been unambiguously identified as mastoparan C, a peptide that is known to affect profound histamine release from mast cells and to generally activate membrane G protein-linked receptors. It is thus highly probable that its antimicrobial effects, like those previously documented, are a result of a generalized membrane interactive and disruptive function perhaps reflective of the authentic role of amphibian skin antimicrobials.

The effects of dietary vitamin C supplementation on glucose homeostasis and insulin glycation were examined in adult lean and obese hyperglycemic (ob/ob) mice. In lean mice, supplementation of the drinking water with vitamin C (25 g/L) for 14 days did not affect food intake, fluid intake, glycated hemoglobin, plasma glucose, or plasma insulin concentrations. Total pancreatic insulin content and the percentage of glycated pancreatic insulin were also similar to control lean mice. In ob/ob mice, vitamin C supplementation caused significant reductions by 26% to 48% in food intake and fluid intake, glycated hemoglobin, plasma glucose, and insulin concentrations compared with untreated control ob/ob mice. The total insulin content and the extent of insulin glycation in the pancreas of ob/ob mice were also significantly decreased by 42% to 45% after vitamin C supplementation. This change was accompanied by a significant 80% decrease in the percentage of glycated insulin in the circulation of vitamin C- supplemented ob/ob mice. These data demonstrate that vitamin C supplementation can decrease insulin glycation and ameliorate aspects of the obesity-diabetes syndrome in ob/ob mice. Copyright 2002, Elsevier Science (USA).
