The purpose of this article was to compare the mean value of optical density of four porcelains commonly used for fabrication of inlay/ onlay prostheses using direct digital radiograph. The sample consisted of 20 2-mm thick porcelain specimens (measured by digital pachymeter): Empress (Ivoclair), Simbios (Degussa), Vita Omega 900 and Vitadur Alpha (Vita Zahnfabrik). The values of optical density of the specimens were expressed in millimeters aluminum equivalent (mm eq Al). The samples were X-rayed using two charge coupled devices (CCD) - RVG (Trophy) - Visualix (Gendex) and a phosphor plate system - Digora (Soredex). The optical density reading was performed with Image Tool 1.28 in a total of 110 measurements. Statistical analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in all materials studied (p < 0.05) regardless of the radiographic system used. The highest optical density value was found for Omega 900 (1.8988 mmeqAl - Visualix - Gendex) and the lowest for Vitadur Alpha (0.8647 - Visualix - Gendex). Thus, the material presenting the highest degree of optical density was Omega 900, Empress and Simbios presented intermediate optical density values, Vitadur Alpha presented the lowest value, and the optical density of porcelains was not influenced by the digital radiography systems.

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, experimental results on pedestal waveguides produced with Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3-WO3-TeO2 thin films deposited by RF Sputtering for photonic applications. Thin films were deposited using Ar/O-2 plasma at 5 mTorr pressure and RF power of 40 W on substrates of silicon wafers. The definition of the pedestal waveguide structure was made using conventional optical lithography followed by plasma etching. Propagation losses around 2.0 dB/cm and 2.5 dB/cm were obtained at 633 and 1050 nm, respectively, for waveguides in the 20-100 mu m width range. Single-mode propagation was measured for waveguides width up to 10 mu m and 12 mu m, at 633 nm and 1050 nm, respectively; for larger waveguides widths multi-mode propagation was obtained. Internal gain of 5.6 dB at 1530 nm, under 980 nm excitation, was measured for 1.5 cm waveguide length (similar to 3.7 dB/cm). The present results show the possibility of using Yb3+/Er3+ codoped Bi2O3-WO3-TeO2 pedestal waveguide for optical amplifiers. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Currently, cell culture systems that include nanoscale topography are widely used in order to provide cells additional cues closer to the in vivo environment, seeking to mimic the natural extracellular matrix. Electrospinning is one of the most common techniques to produce nano fiber mats. However, since many sensitive parameters play an important role in the process, a lack of reproducibility is a major drawback. Here we present a simple and robust methodology to prepare reproducible electrospun-like samples. It consists of a polydimethylsiloxane mold reproducing the fiber pattern to solvent-cast a polymer solution and obtain the final sample. To validate this methodology, poly(L-lactic) acid (PLLA) samples were obtained and, after characterisation, bioactivity and ability to direct cell response were assessed. C2C12 myoblasts developed focal adhesions on the electrospun-like fibers and, when cultured under myogenic differentiation conditions, similar differentiation levels to electrospun PLLA fibers were obtained.

This paper reports on a case study of the impact of fabrication steps on InN material properties. We discuss the influence of annealing time and sequence of device processing steps. Photoluminescence (PL), surface morphology and electrical transport (electrical resistivity and low frequency noise) properties have been studied as responses to the adopted fabrication steps. Surface morphology has a strong correlation with annealing times, while sequences of fabrication steps do not appear to be influential. In contrast, the optical and electrical properties demonstrate correlation with both etching and thermal annealing. For all the studied samples PL peaks were in the vicinity of 0.7 eV, but the intensity and full width at half maximum (FWHM) demonstrate a dependence on the technological steps followed. Sheet resistance and electrical resistivity seem to be lower in the case of high defect introduction due to both etching and thermal treatments. The same effect is revealed through 1/f noise level measurements. A reduction of electrical resistivity is connected to an increase in 1/f noise level.

ABSTRACT The objective of this thesis is the development and characterization of optical label-free biosensors based on Bio-Photonic sensing Cells (BICELLs). BICELL is a novel biosensor concept developed by the research group, and it consists of a combination of vertical interrogation optical techniques and photonic structures produced by using micro- and nano-fabrication methods. Several main conclusions are extracted from this work. Firstly, a standard BICELL is defined based on FP interferometers, which demonstrated its capacity for accomplishing performance comparisons among different structured BICELLs, as well as to achieve low-cost immunoassays. Different available fabrication techniques were studied for BICELL manufacturing. It is found that contact lithography at wafer scale produce cost-effective, reproducible and high quality structures. The resolution achieved was 700 nm. Study on the response of developed BICELLs to immunoassays is performed within this work. It is therefore studied the influence of BICELLs based on different geometries and sizes in the immunoassay, which resulted in a new approach to predict the biosensing behaviour of any structured optical biosensor relating to its effective surface and optical sensitivity. Also, it is demonstrated a novel and low-cost characterization technique of the experimental optical sensitivity, based on ultrathin-film deposition. Finally, it is also demonstrated the capability of using the developed BICELLs in this thesis for real applications detection of hormones, virus and proteins.

A new numerical model which incorporates Brillouin shift frequency variations arising from fibre inhomogeneities has been developed for stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibres. This enables simulations of backscattered and transmitted power as functions of input power based only on known physical and material parameters as well as the polarisation factor and the measured Brillouin gain linewidth for the fibre. Agreement between modelled and experimental power characteristics for a CW input is excellent.

We have measured the optical phase sensitivity of fiber based on poly(methyl methacrylate) under near-single-mode conditions at 632.8 nm wavelength. The elongation sensitivity is 131±3×105 rad m-1 and the temperature sensitivity is -212±26 rad m-1 K-1. These values are somewhat larger than those for silica fiber and are consistent with the values expected on the basis of the bulk polymer properties.

We have systematically measured the differential stress-optic coefficient, ?C, in a number of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibers drawn with different stress, ranging from 2 up to 27 MPa. ?C was determined in transverse illumination by measuring the dependence of birefringence on additional axial stress applied to the fiber. Our results show that ?C in PMMA fibers has a negative sign and ranges from -4.5 to -4.5×10-12 Pa-1, depending on the drawing stress. Increase of the drawing stress results in greater initial fiber birefringence and lower ?C.

We report on the fabrication and characterisation of a Bragg grating in multimode microstructured polymer optical fibre with a Bragg wavelength of 827nm. This is the smallest Bragg wavelength reported to date for a polymer optical fibre grating and the relatively low loss of the fibre at this wavelength considerably enhances the utility of the device compared to gratings at longer wavelengths.

We present a thorough study on the development of a polymer optical fibre-based tuneable filter utilizing an intra-core Bragg grating that is electrically tuneable, operating at 1.55 µm. The Bragg grating is made tuneable using a thin-film resistive heater deposited on the surface of the fibre. The polymer fibre was coated via the photochemical deposition of a Pd/Cu metallic layer with the procedure induced by VUV radiation at room temperature. The resulting device, when wavelength tuned via Joule heating, underwent a wavelength shift of 2 nm for a moderate input power of 160 mW, a wavelength to input power coefficient of -13.4 pm mW-1 and time constant of 1.7 s-1. A basic theoretical study verified that for this fibre type one can treat the device as a one-dimensional system. The model was extended to include the effect of input electrical power changes on the refractive index of the fibre and subsequently to changes in the Bragg wavelength of the grating, showing excellent agreement with the experimental measurements.

We report the fabrication and characterization of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with 870 nm resonance wavelength in a single-mode TOPAS microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF). The grating has been UV-written with the phasemask technique using a 325 nm HeCd laser. The static tensile strain sensitivity has been measured as 0.64 pm/µstrain, and the temperature sensitivity was -60 pm/°C. This is the first 870nm FBG and the first demonstration of a negative temperature response for the TOPAS FBG, for which earlier results have indicated a positive temperature response. The relatively low material loss of the fiber at this wavelength compared to that at longer wavelengths will considerably enhance the potential utility of the TOPAS FBG.

Fibre Bragg gratings have been UV inscribed in multimode microstructured polymer optical fibre in both the 1550nm and 800nm spectral regions. Thermally annealing the fibre at 80°C has been shown to shrink the fibre length and as a result a permanent negative Bragg wavelength shift is observed. The blue shift can be tuned between 0-16nm in the 1550nm spectral region and 0-6nm in the 800nm spectral region, depending on the duration the heat is applied before a saturation level is reached and the fibre stops shrinking in the region of 2 hours. Exploiting this, wavelength division multiplexed sensors have been UV inscribed in both the 1550nm and 800nm regions using a single phase mask for each wavelength region. The 800nm sensor takes advantage of the lower attenuation of poly (methyl methacrylate) of 2dB/m compared to 100dB/m at 1550nm.

Magnetic polymer nanofibres intended for drug delivery have been designed and fabricated by electrospinning. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were successfully incorporated into electrospun nanofibre composites of two cellulose derivatives, dehydroxypropyl methyl cellulose phthalate (HPMCP) and cellulose acetate (CA), while indomethacin (IDN) and aspirin have been used as model drugs. The morphology of the neat and magnetic drug-loaded electrospun fibres and the release characteristics of the drugs in artificial intestinal juice were investigated. It was found that both types of electrospun composite nanofibres containing magnetite nanoparticles showed superparamagnetism at room temperature, and their saturation magnetisation and morphology depend on the Fe3O4 nanoparticle content. Furthermore, the presence of the magnetite nanoparticles did not affect the drug release profiles of the nanofibrous devices. The feasibility of controlled drug release to a target area of treatment under the guidance of an external magnetic field has also been demonstrated, showing the viability of the concept of magnetic drug-loaded polymeric composite nanofibres for magneto-chemotherapy.
